Nottingham
By Carla Butala
About the city
Nottingham is the county town of Nottinghamshire, in the East Midland of England, located on the
bank of the Leen River. According to the latest census overtaken in 2011 has an estimated
population of 305,680 inhabitants. It is the ninth largest urban area in the United Kingdom.
Regarding to its climate, during the month of July, as currently in the station in this region of
Europe, the weather in Nottingham is characteristic of summer. The season ends on 21
September. Besides, the city has many different architectural styles and historical landmarks; it is
related to the Legend of Robin Hood, which makes the city look more intriguing for tourism.
The origin of Nottingham
Nottingham has a very interesting history, especially because of its name. Firstly was called Place
of the Caves, when it belonged to the Kingdom of Mercia, in the Anglo-Saxon times. But then it fell
under the power of a Saxon who was known as Snotingaham and he brought his people with him
and recalled the place as the Lace Market. Thus the nickname of this man is the origin of the
name Nottingham.
Culture
As it was previously mentioned, it is impossible to talk about the city of Nottingham without
making a special reference to the Legend of Robin Hood, which is about a man who was ripped off
by a sheriff, making him lose all his money and property. After this incident he became a skilled
archer and sword man, and always accompanied by his merry men, he robbed to the rich to give
to the poor.

The character of Robin Hood was so popular to people in the medieval period that people
transmitted the story over the years though tales for children and ballads, in that way the story
become a big influence for Nottinghams culture for literature, history, music, culture in general,
2

and even cinema and TV., because there are plenty of movies and cartoons based on this legend
films, like The prince of thieves produced in 1991, or one of the last called Robin Hood which
was produce in 2010.
The character of Robin Hood is so appreciated for Nottinghams people that they call its town as
the country of Robin Hood, and in their flag, which was adopted in 2011, there is a green
silhouette of him. Thus if you take the chance of visiting this town is impossible not to find
something related to their most important legend and idol.
Places to see
The city contains lots of beautiful places, historically and culturally relevant for the town, and quite
attractive for tourists or families who wants to spend their day outside. There are three castles to
visit: the Nottingham Castle, the Belvior castle and the Newark castle. Besides, in Nottingham you
can find ancient manors like the Wollaton Hall. If you prefer to see a show the town has two big
theatres (the Nottingham Playhouse and the theatre royal) and smaller theatre venues
(Nottingham art theatre, the lace market theatre and the new theatre). The town has many places
to see, as the Galleries of Justice or Holme Pierrepont Hall, The Gatehouse Tea Rooms, etc. Of
course, there are many attractions about Robin Hood too, as the monuments with his silhouette,
but moreover the city has the Wheel gate park, which is a family theme park about Robin Hood as
well.
My opinion
The town is a quite absorbing, magical and mystical place. It has many activities, its architecture is
mixed and its buildings are beautiful for me to see. When I was reading about the Nottingham I
found myself surprised for the way the people keep their tradition, and how they respect, and
admire their legend. I was definitely captured by the character of Robin Hood; he makes the city
look even more interesting. In conclusion, even when at the moment I chose Nottingham I didnt
know so much about it, I liked to do this work, I liked the town, and I think it would be just the
greater visit it myself.
