You might want to come to our 31st AGM and
Annual International Conference in Parksville, BC, only
to build sand castles on the beach, watch harbor seals
frolic in the ocean, or stroll along the scenic walkways
of town, showered in resplendent blooms of owering
trees and shrubs. And then of course your time isnt
complete without an inspiring hike through the virgin
coastal forest of nearby Cathedral Grove, with its
800-year-old trees, one measuring over 9 meters in
circumference! Allow extra time to enjoy the area, and
we promise you wont need to wear your long-johns!
In between the sandy strolls and seagull shrieks, there
is in fact, a lot to take in at the conference with pre-
sentations, workshops and demonstrations, equally
exciting to log builders.
Barry Harem will illustrate the very rich precedence
of building with logs as practiced by coastal indige-
nous populations for thousands of years, whose legacy
and inuence is still strong in modern architecture.
Doug Reed will recount the history of the log cabin in
North America and shed light on the advent of log
homes on the American Frontier. Be ready for this, as
there will be skill-testing questions that Doug throws
to you! Del Radomske will revisit over-scribing and
arm you with all the formulas you need to make it
work. Jean Steinbrecher will talk about drawing speci-
cations, Dave Rogers will be presenting an axeman-
ship demo; weve got talks on safety issues (rigging,
fall protection, crane safety); Jerry Rouleau seminars
on lead management and marketing; the use of visual
animation in design by Cyril Courtois; more stair
building workshops by devotees, and much more.
Our conferences have hosted the International Log
Builder Games over the last few years. The events

have been fun, the rules rened, and its
been a great way to demonstrate job site
efficiency with builders showing their
stuff. There is always generous corporate
support for this event, and someone
always goes home with a new chainsaw,
as well as plenty of other prizes.
The cornerstone to our annual gather-
ings has been the combined agendas of
teaching and fund raising. In Parksville,
we will host another week long pre-conference workshop focused on developing
particular skills in joinery as we build a log gazebo (as shown in the 3D image).
Attendance will be limited, and pre-registration is required. Please check our website
for details on all events, and look for your registration package coming to you early
in the new year.
Along with all the other seminars outlined in this issue, and still more in the works
(interested in thatch roofs?), the time spent in and around Parksville will be well
worth your while. As so many attendees of past conferences have stated we cant
afford not to come.
See you there...bring your sand castle pails!

How do you rate your company? Check out the 6 Ps for Sales Success:
1) Place 2) Product 3) Price 4) Presentation 5) People 6) Positive company image
By the year 2050, everything we know so far will represent only 5% of known
information.
Want to check out a property location and see what it looks like from space?
Go to: www.teraserve.com
Heres an easy way to remember the type of question you should ask your cus-
tomersthe 9 Ss for Question Selling:
1) Site
2) Size (dimensions)
3) Square footage
4) Shape (lines of home, number of corners, roof design, etc.)
5) Spending (total budget without land); 6) Schedule (time frame)
7) Situation (why are they in the market now and what is holding them back
from getting started?)
8) Similarities (what kind of common bond do you have with the customer?)
9) Shopping experience
Whenever you plan a home show always plan a special event within 10 to 14
days after the show to invite people to attend (call to action). Ideas for call to
action programs: Special model open house, customer open house, new home
planning seminars, site visits, plant visits, etc.
If you have good people you will generally have a good product. If you have
so-so people you will have a so-so product.
Does your crane have your company name, phone number and website painted
on it? What a great advertising location.
Jerry Rouleau, owner of J. Rouleau & Associates, will be on hand at our Spring AGM
with some great seminars.

The ILBA has had another busy year and looks forward to even
more activity in 2004 with plans for the Spring AGM in
Parksville, a Rendez-vous in Scotland, a Rendez-vous in Quebec,
a European Fall Tour, along with our work with the ICC and
Zabludow project. Upcoming newsletters and the website will
keep you informed, and you can always call or email us!
The Spring AGM will offer lots of hands on workshops and
seminars associated with the trade, as well as some great train-
ing opportunities for your office staff to pick up by those who
understand our industrys needs. There is lots of information in
this newsletter, and the detailed conference package will be
forthcoming to you early in the new year. You can also keep
abreast of any new developments by logging onto our website
at www.logassociation.org and looking under Conferences.
Weve already received calls from sponsors for the spring event,
including The Sansin Corporation, GRK Fasteners, Makita Tools,
Dietrich, and Log Home Design Ideas. A detailed list of all the
sponsors will be featured in the next few newsletters as well. We
wish to express our sincere thanks to all our sponsors, members
and associates for all your contributions to the handcrafted log
building industry throughout this past year!
The election results are in and we wish to thank all of you
who took the time to participate in the ILBA Annual Elections.
The three candidates who were elected are Vic Janzen, Mark
Fritch and Jeff Patterson. The Executive Board will be chosen by
the new board early in the new year. We would like to thank
Kurt Overholt, Brant Schreiber and David Rogers for letting their
names stand, and look forward to having these individuals
remain involved in various ILBA activities and committees.
We recently had the opportunity to attend the Timber Frame
Conference at Le Chateau Montebello, its always great to net-
work with this guild. Weve found
the guild members to be passion-
ate people, just like the log builders
and a wonderful group to attend a
conference among-many thanks for
their hospitality! Weve included a
few photos of their hands on work-
shops and also one of the striking
couples seen on their
dress up evening, you
see it was Halloween and
these guild members
went all out!
Please note that your
membership renewal will
be automatic for 2004, this
means we will invoice you
according to when you
joined this year! The rst
invoices will be mailed out
early in the new year to
those whose memberships are due we hope you will nd this
a more convenient method. If you have any changes in your
contact information or would like to upgrade your membership
please make sure to contact us.

A timber framers secrets
PRE- CONFERENCE 1 - DAY WORKS HOP
by Will Beamer
Learning developed drawing tech-
niques enables the carpenter to sim-
plify complicated carpentry problems
through the use of this traditional
drafting method. The skill of drawing
complex shapes in a form that
enables the carpenter to directly
measure working angles and scale
dimensions has been taught for cen-
turies, and the combination of developed drawings and basic
roof math empowers the builder with a far wider variety of
building shapes.
In this workshop we will use simple math (no trigonometry!)
to gure lengths of pieces and locations of joinery, and then use
descriptive geometric drawing to produce full scale views of the
joint itself. This technique is useful for irregular roofs as well as
simple intersections, and we will show various tricks throughout
the workshop to speed up the layout and cutting process.
Registration packages for the conference will be sent out in
the new year.

Do you have a tough time getting your customer to under-

If this sounds like something you would like to learn more

workshop
MARCH 3 0 , 3 1 & APRI L 1 , 2 0 0 4 I N PARKS VI LLE, BC
D-Log has been developed specically for the professional log
builder by Dietrichs. In this 3 day workshop, you will build vir-
tual log walls and roof systems in 3D. With D-Log you can
arrange actual log sizes in a virtual relationship on screen. This
will help you visualize and make decisions regarding joinery.
Heres an example. Imagine you are building a truss with
round logs. You prescribe the dimensions for the individual logs,
including the taper. Now you can assemble your truss on the
screen and determine precise heights; housing depths and
placements; joinery; metal connectors; and you will know how
much material is at the intersec-
tion of two or more logs.
The Dietrichs D-Log software
can take the guess work out of
the construction process, which
will prevent costly errors and
save time.

Have you thought of cordwood housing?
Jerry Wait of Frontier Builders, and Past
President of the ILBA, decided to attempt
cordwood construction after seeing the
pile of log ends in his yard. We realized
the wood was likely to go to waste, so we
decided to give it a try, says Jerry. Jerry
and the crew felt it was an opportunity to
see what it was like, plus they had some
land to permanently construct the build-
ing on. What they built was a round cord
wood house, 44' in diameter. Why round,
you might ask? Because it gives you the
most square footage on the interior for the
exterior wall space. See the attached oor
plan and photos submitted by Frontier.
Would they do it again? Oh yes, says
Jerry, it was easy, fun, and a very nice
looking house.
We recently had the opportunity to
meet some experts in the industry, Rob
& Jaki Roy, whove been in the eld since
1975. A cordwood masonry home can be
built with simple tools and techniques,
and they are environmentally friendly and
energy efficient, said Rob recently at a
cord wood class he held at the Timber
Frame Guild conference this past October
in Montebello, Quebec.
Rob Roy has several books on this craft
available for anyone interested in pursuing
this building process, and will be on hand
with Jaki to provide a one day hands on
pre-conference workshop at our upcoming
spring AGM. You can also look forward
to taking in their seminar on living earth
roofs, which will be held during the
conference this spring. See you all there!

A picture is worth a thousand words
by Robrt Savignac
Browsing bookstores is kind of an addiction and I never pass an
opportunity to duck into a bookstore whenever getting to a new
city and/or a new country! Collecting titles on log building
requires a bit of searching, but usually bears fruit!
There are a lot of books available in a great many languages
and ipping through the pages is a learning experience, since
illustrations and photographs speak right out loud! Once such
book, Frn Stock till Stuga, by Sven-Gunnar Hkansson, has sat
full of inspiring images on my shelf for years. Now nally there is
an English translation, published by Algrove Publishing (ISBN#1-
894572-72-6) and is called From Log to Log House. Suddenly all
the photos and images took life and context as the detailed text
lent relevance to all the images and their speculative meanings.
This is an excellent book for beginner and expert alike, with a
very technical perspective on building everything from sheds and
saunas to homes and cottages. Hkansson has presented a train-
ing manual to our trade, revealing both an historic and modern
perspective to log building. Your library is not complete without
this essential work.
While in Poland, I chanced upon a technical book store in
Bialystok, where the shelves were lined with school texts and
technical documents. Here, in the Architecture section, was a
fairly non-descript book with a photo of an old log home on the
cover. Projektowanie Architektoniczne, I Budownictwo
Regionalne, published in Warsaw in 1999 (ISBN 83-02-06208-1)
is a study of traditional Polish wooden architecture with a signi-
cant emphasis on log buildings and construction details.
What caught my immediate attention was a non-settling roof
detail, where the rafters are bearing on an external top plate or
outrigger (see Drawing A). Supported by a braced post structure
with sections 2.5 to 3 meters wide surrounding the log buildings
exterior walls; an overlap allows settling and movement of log
walls. It is characterized as one of the signicant features in
log/wooden homes in the Silesia and Luzice areas of Poland. Log
building has a huge history in Poland, with inuences coming in
from every border. This Side Post System (Konstruckcja
przyslupowa) is seen as well through several other regions of
Poland and where the walls of horizontal timbers are also stiff-
ened with vixens (a vixen consisted of two upright studs, one
on the outside, the other on inside, bolted together to stiffen a
wall). The walls of horizontal, hewn logs, enclosed by a frame of
free-standing posts attached to the wall plate with brackets and
supporting the roofs framework was used to construct everything
from cathedrals and synagogues to inns, granaries and homes.
Its been difficult to sift through the text, but indeed the pic-
tures speak 1000 words!

Central Scotland, now a man made
desert of industrial ravaged landscape,
denuded of trees, is in need for an aes-
thetic and environmental rejuvenation.
Long ago clad in mixed forests including
oaks and Scotspine, the introduction of
log buildings to the stone-strewn land-
scape of this area seems altogether for-
eign, yet ever so appealing.
The ILBA, in conjunction with the
Timber Framers Guild, will coordinate a

available from a local estate, the ILBA
invites its members to contribute to a for-
midable cause in the realization of this
dream. This project is starting from

membership to provide enthusiasm,
expertise and participation. Only an hours
drive from the Scottish Highlands and the
famed Loch Lomand, this is an opportuni-
ty well worth our time. Meals and accom-

in offering instruction, design services, or
an eagerness to share what you know,

Small employers often feel that they cant
compete with larger organizations in their
efforts to attract and retain good employ-
ees. Thats a myth. There are a lot of ways
that small businesses can in fact be more
attractive to employees who want to be
recognized for their individual accomplish-
ments. Focus on them as individuals,
provide exibility and an environment
that inspires loyalty and achievement. You
can do this without breaking the bank.
Here are a few ideas.
Small gifts such a free pass or guest
pass to a tness center, tickets to a
sports event, restaurant certicate,
movie passes, gift certicates for prod-
ucts and services such as video store,
car wash, gas.
For special recognition, send owers or
a fruit basket to spouse or to the home .
Hand written notes appreciating a job
well done or for a service anniversary.
When there is illness or death in family,
BE THERE for them. Be supportive.
Acknowledge a new baby or a marriage.
Support grass roots efforts when
employees celebrate holidays and
events: births, marriages, and birthdays.
If you offer sick days as a benet, set
up a Perfect Attendance bonus. If they
dont use the sick days pay them at
end of the year.
Make your workplace FUN a place
people look forward to each Monday.
A place they feel they belong.
Invest in your employees development.
Encourage training and education.
Have a luncheon for new employees to
familiarize them with the company, its
history, your vision and philosophy.
Celebrate success ring the bell, have
an ice cream social or a pizza party.
Share the good news.
Consider bartering for some of these
perks and gifts. Make it a win-win out-
come.

Cindy Thiede, successful writer and author of ve books and
numerous magazine articles, including frequent pieces for Log
Home Living magazine, died Sept 26 in Hailey, ID. She was 45.
Cindy is survived by her husband, Art and her sons, Jesse and
Tyler, her brother Tom Teipner, and her parents, Dr. William and
Martha Teipner. Born Cindy Teipner on June 29, 1958 in San
Francisco, she was raised in Reno, NV. With a bachelors degree
in wildlife biology and a masters degree in wildlife manage-
ment, Thiede began her career as a writer and photographer. In
her 20-year career, Thiedes literary accomplishments include
ve books and numerous magazine and newspaper articles pub-
lished here and abroad.
While she was a prolic and successful author, her real pas-
sion was people, say those who loved her. She drew people into
her life and became their best friend. She was never too busy to
talk or too tired to open her heart to anyone. Thiede had a way
of nding the best in someone and revealing it to them so they
could see it, too. She was a collector of people and a giver of
time and love.
While Thiede had many friends who were part of her life,
none were more important and receiving of her love than her
two sons, Tyler and Jesse. Whether it was helping them with
their school projects or supporting them in their athletic
endeavors, Cindy was there every step of the way.
The family asks that you send donations to the Cindy Thiede
Wood River Valley Memorial Fund. This fund will provide sup-
port for community projects in the area.
Donations can be sent to: The Idaho Community Foundation,
P.O. Box 8143, Boise, ID 83707
THANK YOU!
