system that works with existing tools and systems for easier management, lower cost of ownership, smoother deployment and
migration, and greater choice and flexibility.
In this article we will discuss how to install and configure Microsoft Lync Server 2010. Below diagram shows the Lync lab setup which
we are going to deploy.

I am using Hyper-V manager to configure all server setup.

Description FQDN IP Address
Domain Controller dc01.doitfixit.com 192.168.7.101
Microsoft Lync Front End Server 2010 lync01.doitfixit.com 192.168.7.103
Visit http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398438.aspx for recommended hardware requirement and specifications.
Prerequisites
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1 (To be installed using Server Manager)
Microsoft Visual C+ 2008 Redistributable
Windows Media Format Runtime
Windows PowerShell version 2.0
Windows Installer version 4.5
Lync Server 2010 can automatically install everything except .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1, Windows PowerShell version 2.0, and
Windows Installer version 4.5.

Install the Windows Media Format Runtime on servers running Windows Server 2008 R2.

Install the Windows Media Format Runtime on servers running Windows Server 2008.
%systemroot%\system32\pkgmgr.exe /quiet /ip /m:%windir%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-
Windows-Media-Format-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.6001.18000.mum
To add IIS features run the below command.
ServerManagerCmd.exe -Install Web-Server Web-Http-Redirect Web-Scripting-Tools Web-
Windows-Auth Web-Client-Auth Web-Asp-Net Web-Log-Libraries Web-Http-Tracing Web-Basic-Auth
Once this is done we can start the installer from Lync Server 2010 media.
Click Yes to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable package.
Active Directory Preparation
Click Prepare Active Directory to prepare Active Directory schema, forest and domain for the Lync Server.
Click Run
Click on View Log to view the deployment log for executed command.
Now we can verify the replication of schema.

Open ADSIedit.msc. On the Action menu, click Connect to - Select Schema from the "Select a well known Naming Context:"
Search for CN=ms-RTC-SIP-SchemaVersion. If this object exists, and the value of the rangeUpper attribute is 1100 and the value of
the rangeLower attribute is 14, then the schema was successfully updated and replicated.
Lets prepare the current Forest. Click Run in Deployment wizard.


Verify Replication of Global Catalog

Go to Active Directory Users and Computers and check for Universal group CsAdministrators in the right side pane. It it is present,
replication of the Forest Preparation has been successful.

Lets prepare the domain.


Verify Replication in the Domain
Get-CsAdDomain -Domain doitfixit.com -GlobalSettingsDomainController dc01.doitfixit.com
If the domain is ready you will get "LC_DOMAINSETTINGS_STATE_READY" message.
Add Lync administrator to CSAdministrator group.
Now open the Lync Server Deployment Wizard.

Run Prepare first Standard Edition Server


check the Deployment log.

Install Topology Builder. Select New Topology and click OK


Now open Lync Server Topology Builder.


Select New Topology and click OK

Save the topology.

Define the primary domain.

If you have any additional supported domains you can add from here. (Eg: local domain is doitfixit.local and you want to add
doitfixit.com as sip domain)


Define Name and the Description.
Specify the site details


New Front End Wizard will begin.

Lync Frond End Pool FQDN (Lync server FQDN name)


Select features which we going to deploy.


Associate server roles with this front end pool.

Define the SQL store.

Now well need to create a file share, create it locally and ensure the account you are currently using to run the topology builder
has read/write access to this folder. Share

Define the file share.


If you have public facing FQDN for this server, it goes here.


Click Edit Properties from Actions pane.


Add an administrative URL. "https://admin.doitfixit.com"

All set to publish the topology; Now we can publish the topology.


Select Central Management Server.

The Central Management Store is created. When the wizard completes a text based to-do list can be presented with remaining
tasks, youll need to create three DNS A records for the simple URLs specified these should be directed to the IP address of your
Lync Server.

DNS Host (A) Records
dialin.doitfixit.com 192.168.7.103
admin.doitfixit.com 192.168.7.103
meet.doitfixit.com 192.168.7.103
Open Deployment wizard again and choose Install or Update Lync Server System to continue.


Choose Install local Configuration Store and choose the option to retrieve directly from the CMS.


Run Setup or Remove Lync Server Components
Lync Server should be
restarted.


Run Setup or Remove Lync Server Components again.



Request, Install or Assign Certificates.
Click on Request.
Click on Request.

Choose to send the request immediately to an online certificate authority (this will submit through AD Certificate Services)


Select CA.


Specify Friendly Name, Organization Name, etc..


Add SAN names.

Certificate Assignment wizard.

Yes, It's time to start Lync server services. Click on Run to start the services.

Click run on "Service Status (Optional)" to open the Services mmc.

Open Lync Server Control Panel

Login with appropriate credentials.

Enable Users to use Lync.

Click on Add...

Choose user's SIP URI and telephony type. click Enable.

Finally we have to create a SRV - DNS record for new Lync Server, without this Lync client will be unable to locate the server
location.
Service: _sipinternaltls
Protocol: _tcp
Port: 5061
Host Offering this Service: 192.168.7.103
And Host Records...
sip.doitfixit.com point to 192.168.7.103
admin.doitfixit.com point to 192.168.7.103
