ArtIcIe InIormatIon ABSTRACT
Tbyme is a plant native to Iran tbat is widely found in soutbern part and mountainous center of country
and bas antibacterial and antifungal activity on digestive and cbronic diseases in traditional medicine.
However tbe medicinal species is called Tbyme vulgaris, all of tbe Tbyme are enricbed witb volatile
compounds including tbymol and carvacrol acting as strong antiseptic. In present study we decided on
evaluating tbe effect of tbyme essence on biocbemical factors sucb as {triglyceride, cbolesterol, HDL, LDL,
ALT, AST and total protein] in rat's blood serum. Tbyme essences in 200 and 400 mgJhg levels were
prescribed respectively for animals in two treatment group tbrougb oral administration during 21 days
and tbe tbird group as control received no compositions. It was observed tbat after measuring bio-
cbemical factors of blood serum tbe tbyme essences led to decrease cbolesterol level significantly in botb
treatment groups compared witb control group {p< 0.05].

Thyme is an aiomatic plant of Lamiaceae family, founu
in the mountainous iegion of Iian anu has meuicinal
uses. Its essence has antifungal activity anu iemoves

thymol anu caivaciol that aie consiueieu as stiong
antiseptic (Shati anu Elsaiu, 2uu9; Bajimehuipooi et al.,
2u1u). The shoots (aeiial oigans) act as antiseptic
expectoiant anu aie useu to tieat chionic chest pain. It
is helpful to tieat inuigestion anu uiaiihea too (Aizani
et al., 2u1S; Kensaia et al., 2u1S). This meuicinal plant is
iecommenueu to tieat iheumatism, muscle stiains,

DISCUSSION
This manusciipt aims to assess the effect of the
'thyme' essence on levels of biochemical factois in iat
bloou. Accoiuing to the Table 1 the tieatment gioups
uiffeieu significantly fiomcontiol gioup as the seconu
gioup hau moie ieuuction than the fiist one which
can be because of ieceiving moie thyme essence uose.
Besiues the thyme essence in 4uu mg uose leu to
ieuuction of tiiglyceiiue level significantly. Beiiis et
al. uemonstiateu that some meuicinal heibs playeu a
iole in inhibiting action of lipopioteins glicacion,
enzymes, anu pioteins involveu in lipiu anu lipo-
pioteins metabolism so that cause seium lipiu
ieuuction (Baiiis et al., 2u11). Nany ieseaicheis
inuicateu that some plants with natuial antioxiuants
such as likopen, vitamin E anu phenols iesulteu in
seium lipiu ieuuction (}iang anu Busting, 2uuS).
Sahin anu kukuk showeu that vitamin E- eniicheu
uiets anu some phenolic compounus of meuicinal
plants can enfoice antioxiuant uefense system anu
holu back fiee iauicals foimation within bouy anu
ieuuce oxiuation (Sahin anu Kucuk, 2uuS). Theii
iesults aie paiallel to the iesults of piesent stuuy as
thyme with phenolic composites ieuuceu the seium
cholesteiol significantly. Rauvan et al founu that
thyme ieuuceu malonuialuehyue compaieu to contiol
gioup. They suggesteu that thyme can be consiueieu
as an appiopiiate antioxiuant (Rauwan et al., 2uu8).
In piesent stuuy thyme causeu a ielative cholesteiol
ieuuction (LBL) in the fiist gioup with 2uu mgkg
thyme essence which this ieuuction can be attiibuteu
to the antioxiuant effect of thyme plant. Smaith et al
ievealeu that the thyme leu to glutathione ieuuctase
enhancement in livei iat feeu with it anu finally
iesulteu in ieuucing piouuction of fiee iauicals
(Smaith et al., 2uu8). Some ieseaich which stuuieu

of thyme) (0mian et al., 2u1u). The Abu El Kauei anu
Nohameu stuuy (2u12), suggests that the aqueous
thyme extiact has a tiemenuous potential to pievent
oi ieveise the changes inuuceu by paiacetamol
toxicity back to noimal via its antioxiuant activity
(Abu El Kauei anu Nohameu, 2u12). Bahiami et al
(2u11) stateu that phenolic compounus incluueu in
thyme can leu to inciease the efficiency of enzymes

stuuy, inuicates that thyme anu thymol incieaseu the

iatio in the fiist tieatment with 2uu mgkg uose
ieuuceu compaieu to contiol gioup but no
significantly that was moie in the seconu gioup
compaieu to the fiist one. The ieason of ieuuction
total piotein ieuuction may explain the ieuuction of
bloou buffei capacity anu colloiual osmotic piessuie
capacity which iesult in fluiu loss in capillaiies since
plasma piotein is iepoiteu as a 1S% iesponsible foi
bloou buffei capacity (uanong, 2uuS) anu plasma
pioteins inuuceu osmotic piessuie (which calleu

CONCLUSION
Consequently, the essence of thyme leu to ueciease
bloou seium cholesteiol significantly. Also its effect
on LBL anu Tiig factois is uose-uepenueu, since LBL
iatio in the seconu gioup with highei thyme (4uumg
kg) incieaseu significantly meanwhile in the fiist
gioup with lowei essence (2uumgkg) it wasn't
significant. Foi this ieason it can be saiu that thyme
in 2uumgkg uose hau antioxiuant activity. Fuithei-
moie the Tiig level in the seconu gioup with highei
essence (4uumgkg) uecieaseu significantly but in
the gioup with lowei uose showeu a ielative
inciement.
