Here is my revised version of you summary:

Types and Functions of Direct Discourse (Speech and Thought) in THE DAMNED
YARD by Ivo Andri

In the texts linguistics and stylistics, one fascinating and key topic is how the discourse of the
novel's protagonists is represented in both speech and thought. Following Bachtin's notion of
heteroglosia, as well as Leech and Short's classification of the types of represented speech and
thought, the author of this paper investigated the types and functions of direct discourse in
Andri's novel THE DAMNED YARD (PROKLETA AVLIJA). His analysis shows several types of
representation of direct speech with various narrative/literary functions. The representation of
direct thought, however, does not follow such a plethora of literary functions. This confirms the
conclusion that the "norm" or "standard" for the representation of speech is direct speech, but
that the "norm" or "standard" for the representation of thought, on the other hand, is not direct
thought, but actually indirect thought.

Original text:

In the text li ngui sti cs and t ext st yli sti c one of highly interesting and important topics is the
question of representation of (novel) charact ers' (protagonists') discourse (speech and
thought). Following Bachtin's notion of heteroglosia and Leech and Short's classification of types
of represented speech and thought, the author of this paper conducted investigation of the types
and functions of the direct discourse in Andric's novel THE DAMNED YARD (PROKLETA AVLIJA).
The analysis shows several types of the representation of direct speech with different
narrative/literary functions. On the other hand, the representation of direct thought does not
follow such plethora of literary functions. This confirms the conclusion that the "norm" or
"standard" for the representation of speech actually is direct speech, but that the "norm" or
"standard" for the representation of thought is not direct thought but indirect thought

Notes:

1) I was confused by the original first sentence:

In the text li ngui sti cs and t ext st yli sti c one of highly interesting and
important topics is the question of representation of (novel) charact ers'
(protagonists') discourse (speech and thought).

When you wrote "In the text linguistics and text stylistic" are you referring to two separate
texts one entitled Linguistics, and the other entitled Stylistics?

And is it necessary to have all of these words clarified in parantheses novel, progatonists',
speech and thought? I did my best to reword and restructure the sentence so that all these
parantheses would not be necessary. It truly was like a puzzle or mind game to work through!

2) Also in the first sentence, I replaced the adjectives "highly interesting and important" with
"fascinating and key." But instead of "key," you could also use "significant" or "noteworthy" or
even "paramount" (i.e. highly significant).

3) "a plethora of literary functions" is a very nice phrase indeed!

4) This is how I rewrote the second sentence:

Following Bachtin's notion of heteroglosia, as well as Leech and Short's
classification of the types of represented speech and thought, the author of this
paper investigated the types and functions of direct discourse in Andri's novel
THE DAMNED YARD (PROKLETA AVLIJA).

But I didn't know in which tense I should put the verb "investigate," whether it should be "the
author of this paper investigated the types" or "the author of this paper investigates the
types" I'm not too familiar with which tenses are required for such a summary.

5) In the original third sentence,

The analysis shows several types of the representation of direct speech with
different narrative/literary functions.

could the adjective "different" be replaced with "various"? This is what I did, but I wasn't sure if
that's exactly what you meant, so you can change it back, if you so wish.
