Experiments:
1)To Evaluate the Performance Parameters of Vapor
Compression Refrigeration System
2)To Evaluate the Performance Parameters of Vapor
Compression Refrigeration System (Reversed Cycle)
PIEAS
Abstract:
The purpose of this experiment was to study the vapor compression refrigeration
system. The effect of evaporating and condensing temperature on vapor compression
refrigeration system was observed.
Introduction:
Thermodynamic heat pump cycles or refrigeration cycles are the conceptual and
mathematical models for heat pumps and refrigerators. A heat pump is a machine or
device that moves heat from one location (the 'source') at a lower temperature to
another location (the 'sink' or 'heat sink') at a higher temperature using mechanical
work or a high-temperature heat source. Thus a heat pump may be thought of as a
"heater" if the objective is to warm the heat sink (as when warming the inside of a home
on a cold day), or a "refrigerator" if the objective is to cool the heat source (as in the
normal operation of a freezer). In either case, the operating principles are identical.
Heat is moved from a cold place to a warm place.

Experiment Rig:
The Vapor Compression Refrigeration System comprises of following items:
1. Copland Reciprocating Compressor (1.25hp)
2. Evaporator finned tube with two rows
3. Condenser finned tube with 3 rows
4. Condenser and evaporator fans with 70W motors
5. Pressure gauges to determine the pressures
6. Temperature sensors to determine the temperature
7. Sight glasses to see the refrigerant
8. Shutoff valves to control the path of the refrigerant
9. Filter drier to absorb the moisture
10. Expansion Valve and capillary tube
11. 4-way reversing valve
12. Electrical panel
13. Sheet metal structure
14. System charged with the refrigerant R22
15. High pressure and low pressure cut outs as an safety equipment

Procedure:
1) Cooling Cycle:
I. Turn off the button on control panel if it is at heat on position.
II. Make sure that the valves R1, R2, e, f are closed.
III. Make sure that the valves a and d are open
IV. If expansion is desired through the capillary tube, open valve c and close
the valve b. If expansion is desired through the expansion valve then
close the valve c and open the valve b.
V. Now turn on the power supply.
The cooling cycle is shown in figure below.

2) Reverse Cycle:
I. First of all turn off the system before switching the system to reverse
mode,.
II. Open the valves e and f.
III. Close the valves d and a.
IV. Open either valve c or b.
V. Turn on the button on electrical panel to heat on mode.
VI. Now turn on the system
The reverse cycle is shown in figure below.
