Codes of Practice How you used the Tools and Equipment

E Cutting- Accuracy
In Fab-Tech we have different types of scissors
for different purposes. We have Paper Scissors and
Shear titaniu!" scissors. The Paper scissors are
for cutting paper when we have designs. In the
Paper Scissors# the $and-$o%es are even# so you
can put your hand in either way.
For the fabric scissors# they have different si&ed
hand%es' one for the thu!b and the other for the
rest of our fingers. This gives us better contro%
over the scissors.
( Threading the !achine
I thin) I used the threading !achine pretty we%%.
Whi%e using it I a%ways re!e!bered *safety first*.
Safety is i!portant whi%e using the sewing
!achine because there are a%ways pins and sharp
things %ying around. If we are not carefu%# we can
easi%y end up being hurt. A techni+ue to he%p !e
thread the sewing !achine when I forgot the
steps# was to fo%%ow the arrows and guide%ines on
the sewing !achine. It !ade it !uch !ore easier,
I a%so pac)ed up after !yse%f when finished with
the !achine. I !ade sure I %eft no sharp ite!s
%ying around# such as pins# need%es and scissors.
E
Straight Sewing Sea!
I be%ieve I did +uite good at straight sewing. At
first it was +uite difficu%t as I was sti%% getting
used to using the sewing !achine. -ut after
getting the hang of it# it surprising%y turned out to
be pretty easy, It is i!portant to sew straight as it
gives your finished product a !ore *professiona%*
and c%ean %oo). (y techni+ue to he%ping !e
i!prove and sew even !ore straighter was
!a)ing sure !y !ateria% was sti%%# and I used the
cha%) for !ar)ing# so there were no chance of
errors.
E Finishing .ff Edge- /ig /ag
I thin) I did +uite we%% with finishing off !y iPod
case with a &ig-&ag. I thin) finishing it off with
&ig-&ags is i!portant and essentia% to he%p ho%d
the !ateria% together for %onger# and !a)ing the
%ife of our product %ast %onger.
A techni+ue I used for this was !a)ing sure to
)eep !y !ateria% sti%% and using the cha%) as
guide%ines once again.

n0a-
as I didn*t use
this practice.
(a)ing a Pattern
I did not use this techni+ue in Fab-Tech# but I
thin) !a)ing patterns and being f%e1ib%e with the
sewing !achine is a great s)i%% to have. This is
because you can have the advantage of being ab%e
to !a)e patterns on our finished products# giving
the! a !ore sophisticated %oo) and it gives our
product !ore co%our# which !a)es it !ore
attracting and attention grabbing,
E (easuring
(easuring is one of the !ost i!portant steps in
Fabric Techno%ogy# and its one of the tas)s which
you so!eti!es have to carefu%%y chec) over and
over again to !a)e sure your product turns out the
e1act shape and si&e you need it to be. For !e# I
needed !y to be e1act as it needed to fit !y
phone0 iPod inside. If it was too %oose# !y
iPod0phone wou%d fa%% out# which cou%d %ead to
scratches and da!age being caused it it. And if it
was too s!a%% and tight# !y iPod0 phone wou%d
not be ab%e to fit in it.
A techni+ue which he%ped !e !a)e sure it was
the correct si&e was !easuring it over and over
again. Whi%e I was in the !idd%e of !a)ing the
case# I wou%d have !y iPod0phone with !e to
!easure it at the ti!e# to *trip%e chec)*. It he%ped
!a)e !y end product great as it fit perfect%y and
!y product turned out to be what I wanted.
n0a-
as I didn*t use
this practice.
Adding detai%- intricate designs
I didn*t app%y this practice to !y fina% product as
it was !y first product# and I wanted to start off
nice and si!p%e and get !ore detai%ed in the
future# as I %earn !ore and get better and better.
A%though I didn*t use intricate designs in !y fina%
product this ti!e# I thin) app%ying this practice
wou%d be great for decorating products such as p.e
bags and pi%%ows etc. 2as they are !ore %arger
products# and have !ore space for s!a%%0intricate
designs3.
If I app%ied this practice to !y product# I wou%d
!a)e a good fina% draft p%an with !easure!ents
as I )now the who%e design wou%d fit on !y
product. If I used intricate designs this ti!e# it
wou%d have i!proved the product by adding !ore
co%our into it# !a)ing it !ore *attention grabbing*
once again.
E

Safety
Safety is one of the !ost i!portant practices in
the Fabric Techno%ogy roo! as-we%%. This is
because we have !any ha&ardous# and point
things in the roo! which wou%d be har!fu% to
students. This is why I be%ieve a techni+ue for
safety wou%d be !a)ing sure you behave yourse%f
as you do not distract friends0c%ass!ates" and
co!!on-sense is i!portant as-we%%. E1a!p%es of
bad si%%iness which we shou%d avoid wou%d be4
-running around the c%assroo!
-ye%%ing0 screa!ing
-running with scissors
-p%aying with pins
-%eaving sharp thins %ying around
-being si%%y on the !achines
-creating a %ot of !ess# and not c%eaning after
yourse%f.
If a%% students avoided doing these si%%y things#
The Fab-Tech roo! wou%d be a !uch safer p%ace
and better wor)ing environ!ent.
Food Tech Codes of Practice How you used the Tools and Equipment
E !easuring
(easuring is an essentia% practice re+uired in
coo)ing. (easure!ents and used in near%y a%%
coo)ing recipes, (easuring is i!portant as it
he%ps !a)e your fina% product e1act%y as the one
in the recipe.
A techni+ue I used whi%e !easuring the products
was !a)ing sure I used the correct !easuring too%
first# then afterwards I !ade sure I co%%ected the
right ingredient and !easured it at the e1act
a!ount. This a%ways !a)es our group*s end
product of high +ua%ity as it !a)es it taste great,
E (i1ing
(i1ing our ingredients together is another
i!portant practice. In order for the fina% product
to be the best at the end# it is i!portant to !i1 the
ingredients thorough%y together. 2%eaving no
%u!ps and bu!ps3 which cou%d %ater on %ead to a
%onger coo)ing ti!e# or unp%easant tastes.
A techni+ue I used was 5ust !i1ing the !i1ture
the best I cou%d at an average speed and I did not
worry about the ti!e. This was because If I
worried about the ti!e# I !ay have not !i1ed it
thorough%y enough which wou%d %ead to the fina%
food product tasting a bit funny. $aving our
!i1ture !i1ed thorough%y was a good practice
which he%ped !y group i!prove our end product
as our products a%ways turned out de%icious,
2without us getting nasty surprises with
unp%easant tastes,3
E $ygiene
$ygiene is definite%y one of the !ost i!portant
practices in coo)ing. This is because bad hygiene
habits cou%d %ead to !a)ing yourse%f sic)# or even
your c%ass !ates sic)# as we have been wor)ing in
groups, In the worst cases# it cou%d cause food
poisoning,
A techni+ue I used for hygiene was fo%%owing the
paper in-front of the sin). First%y when I got into
the food roo!# I wou%d a%ways put on !y apron
and wash !y hands with soap afterwards. Then I
wou%d ta)e off any %oose 5ewe%ery and tie up any
%ong hair 2if necessary3. This wou%d he%p )eep !e#
as we%% as !y c%ass!ates safer,
E Cutting0 S%icing.
Cutting and S%icing are i!portant practices
because if you do not have teacher supervision
and if you do not %isten to the ru%es# in the worst
case scenario you cou%d end up severe%y cutting or
in5uring ourse%ves,
A techni+ue I used was a%ways !a)ing sure I
tuc)ed away !y fingers as that way I wou%d not
accidenta%%y cut !yse%f. We a%so shou%d )eep our
eyes on the ingredient we*re s%icing# and try not to
%oose concentration. Another thing is !a)ing sure
no-one e%se gets cut accidenta%%y when they are
reaching to grab things etc. This he%ped !a)e our
end food product a high +ua%ity standard as our
ingredients were a%ways cut at the e1act si&e,
Which a%so i!proves the taste of our food,
