Then, how is the composition of the human body in the light of Hindu religion? In the HIndu religion there is the concept of Tri Sarira which describes the composition of human body. Tri Sarira consists of two words, namely Tri and Sarira. Tri meaning three, while Sarira which means body. so, Tri Sarira means three layers of human body that have different functionalitu and quality. The three of the body consists of Stula Sarira, Suksma Sarira and Antahkarana Sarira. 1. Stula Sarira (Gross Body) Stula sarira is the outermost layer of the body (physical) stula sarira is an organ that can seen and touch. Stula sarira is also called Raga Sarira because it wraps the subtle body and causal body. Stula sarira formed from elements of Panca maha bhuta, namely Prtivi: any solid substance, such as bone, muscle, flesh, nails and hair. Apah : any liquid substance, such as blood, sweat and mucus. Teja: any hot substance, such as body temperature. Vayu: air or breath. Akasha: ether or substance of light or electrical energy. What is the process? By grossification of five elements-volume of the body due to space, respiration due to air, body heat due to agni-fire, the make up due to water and mineral earth. How is this body acquired? If all body made up of the same material, why there is difference among them-animal body, human body, plant body and even variations among them? The body is aquaired out of good karma in the past. What is its function? It is the abode for the experience of pleasure, pain etc. What is its nature? It is subject to six modifications (sadvikara) as follows: It exists as potential form in the mothers womb. It is born It grows 2
It transforms It decay, declines and It perishes.
2. Suksma Sarira Sukma Sarira or Lingga Sarira means the subtle body. it consists mind (manah), intelligence (citta) and ego (ahamkara). Suksma Sarira the body layer can not seen or touched, such as the human mind. The mind is located deep in the body that is called the subtle body. suksma sarira a human mind or memory. In sanskrita, suksma sarira also called Citta. Citta is a memory or experience that is made by the body, thought, seen, and felt by humans for life in this world. Citta is one of the elements that make up a persons character or trait. At Citta there is an element of Dasendriya (Dasa=ten; Indriya=senses). Which is devided into Panca Buddhindriya and Panca Karmendriya. Panca Buddhindriya are five kinds of senses identifier, consisting of: Cakswindriya is sensory vision, lies in the eyes. Srotendriya the listener senses, located in the ear. Ghranendriya the senses of smell, located on the nose. Twakindriya identifier that senses touch, located in the skin. Jihwendriya the sense of taste, is located on the tongue. Panca Karmendriya are five types of sensory drive or worker, consisting of: Panendriya was driving on hand. Padendriya was driving on foot. Garbhendriya was driving on the stomach Upastendriya is driving in the private part. Payundriya is driving in the rectum. What is suksma sarira made of? The five elements-space (akasha), air (vayu), water (apah), fire (teja) and earth (prtivi) born before the process grossification. They are known as tanmatras. The five subtle elements (Panca tanmantra) before becoming Panca maha bhuta are: Sabda ear (hearing) Rupa eyes (sight) Sparsa skin (sense of touch) Rasa tongue (taste) 3

The instrument for experiencing pleasure, pain etc. (as againts gross body which is the house for experiencing) since there are varieties of experiences, there should be varieties of instruments also. How many are there? There are seventeen are listed as follows: Panca Buddhindriya (Five sense organs) Panca Karmendriya (Five organs of actions) Panca Prana (Five vital powers) Prana (Respiration) Apana (Excretion) Udana (Throwing out) Samana (Digestion) Vyana (Circulation) Prana means forward moving air, moves inward and governs reception of all types from eating of food, drinking of water and inhalation of air. Apana means air that moves away, moves downward and outward and governs all forms of elimination (emotional, mental experience, urin, carbon dioxide through breath). Udana means the upward moving air, moves upward and qualitative or transformative movements of the life energy. It governs growth of the body, the ability of stand, speech, effort, enthusiasm and will. Samana means balanding air, moves from the periphery to the center, through a churning and discerning action. It aids in digestion on all level (digest food, in the lungs to digest air or absorb oxygen, in the mind digest experience. Vyana means the outward moving air, moves from the center to the periphery. It governs circulation on all level. It moves the foods, water, and oxygen throughout the body and keep emotion and thoughts circulating in the mind.

move, and have a taste. Atman is the layer most powerful body in the human body. atman is also a form of behavior and motion of the human mind. If atman has left the body of a person, then it becomes dead.
