Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Lectionary 29a
Holy Communion (ELW
setting 1)
October 19
th
, 2014

INTRODUCTION

Not even Moses is able to gaze upon the face of God and live. When the
Pharisees try to trap Jesus, he looks at the face of a coin and tells them to
give the emperor what belongs to him and to God what belongs to God. To
gather for worship reminds us that our ultimate allegiance is to God rather
than to any earthly authority. Created in the image of God, we offer our
entire selves in the service of God and for the sake of the world.

CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.

As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.

We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.

PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW

Lord God, you call your people to honor those in authority. Help us elect
trustworthy leaders, participate in wise decisions for our common life, and
serve our neighbors in local communities. Bless the leaders of our land, that
we may be at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the
earth; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

THE ORDER OF WORSHIP

PRELUDE Ave Maria von Arcadelt Franz Liszt

WELCOME

ORDER FOR CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

In the name of the Father, and of the (+) Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from
whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration
of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify
your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

The assembly kneels or stands. Silence is kept for reflection.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have
sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done
and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole
heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of
your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and
lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the
glory of your holy name.
Amen.

In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for
his sake God forgives us all our sins. Almighty God grant unto you the
grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit, reconciliation with God, true
repentance, and time for the amendment of life. In the name of the Father,
and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

the Holy Spirit be with you all!

CANTICLE OF PRAISE

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.
Sovereign God, raise your throne in our hearts. Created by you, let us live in
your image; created for you, let us act for your glory; redeemed by you, let us
give you what is yours, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.

Please be seated.

A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN

FIRST READING: Exodus 33:1223

12
Moses said to the LORD, "See, you have said to me, 'Bring up this
people'; but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you
have said, 'I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.'
13
Now if I have found favor in your sight, show me your ways, so that I may
know you and find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your
people."
14
He said, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."
15
And he said to him, "If your presence will not go, do not carry us up from
here.
16
For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and
your people, unless you go with us? In this way, we shall be distinct, I and
your people, from every people on the face of the earth."

17
The LORD said to Moses, "I will do the very thing that you have
asked; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name."
18
Moses said, "Show me your glory, I pray."
19
And he said, "I will make all
my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you the name, 'The
LORD'; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show
mercy on whom I will show mercy.
20
But," he said, "you cannot see my
face; for no one shall see me and live."
21
And the LORD continued, "See,
there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock;
22
and while my
glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with
my hand until I have passed by;
23
then I will take away my hand, and you
shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen."

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

PSALM: Psalm 99

Refrain:

Tone:

1
The LORD is king; let the
|
people tremble.
The LORD is enthroned upon the cherubim; let
|
the earth shake.
2
The LORD,
|
great in Zion,
is high a-
|
bove all peoples.
3
Let them confess God's name, which is
|
great and awesome;
God is the
|
Holy One.
4
O mighty king, lover of justice, you have es-
|
tablished equity;
you have executed justice and righteous-
|
ness in Jacob. R
5
Proclaim the greatness of the LORD
and fall down be-
|
fore God's footstool;
God is the
|
Holy One.
6
Moses and Aaron among your priests,
and Samuel among those who call upon your
|
name, O LORD;
they called upon you, and you
|
answered them,
7
you spoke to them out of the pil-
|
lar of cloud;
they kept your testimonies and the decree
|
that you gave them.
8
O LORD our God, you answered
|
them indeed;
you were a God who forgave them,
yet punished them for their
|
evil deeds.
9
Proclaim the greatness of the LORD and worship upon God's
|
holy hill;
for the LORD our God is the
|
Holy One. R
SECOND READING: 1 Thessalonians 1:110

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord
Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace.

2
We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in
our prayers, constantly
3
remembering before our God and Father your work
of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
4
For we know, brothers and sisters beloved by God, that he has chosen you,
5
because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in
power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what
kind of persons we proved to be among you for your sake.
6
And you
became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite of persecution you
received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit,
7
so that you became
an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.
8
For the word
of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia,
but in every place your faith in God has become known, so that we have no
need to speak about it.
9
For the people of those regions report about us what
kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols,
to serve a living and true God,
10
and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom
he raised from the dead Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is
coming.

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Please stand for the reading of the gospel.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

VERSE: Shine like stars | in the world,*
holding fast to the | word of life. (Phil. 2:15, 16)

GOSPEL: Matthew 22:1522

The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord.

15
Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said.
16
So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying,
"Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in
accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard
people with partiality.
17
Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay
taxes to the emperor, or not?"
18
But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why
are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites?
19
Show me the coin used for
the tax." And they brought him a denarius.
20
Then he said to them, "Whose
head is this, and whose title?"
21
They answered, "The emperor's." Then he
said to them, "Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's,
and to God the things that are God's."
22
When they heard this, they were
amazed; and they left him and went away.

The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

Please be seated.

HYMN OF THE DAY: You Servants of God (ELW 825)

APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the
dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church,
those in need, and all of God's creation.

Please sit or kneel as you are able:

Each petition ends with:
Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.

Trusting in your mercy and goodness, we bring before you these prayers and
whatever else you see that we need, in the name of the one who sets us free,
Jesus Christ, our Savior.
Amen.

Please rise as we greet one another in the peace of the risen Christ.

THE PEACE

The peace of the Lord be with you always.
And also with you.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ANTHEM Grant us Thy Peace Mendelssohn

OFFERTORY HYMN: Let the Vineyards Be Fruitful (ELW 182)

OFFERING PRAYER

Let us pray.
Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered
together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from
the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus
Christ, now and forever.
Amen.

DIALOGUE

PREFACE

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son,
who reached out to heal the sick and suffering,
who preached good news to the poor,
and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all.

In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension,
we await his coming in glory.

Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord,
and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food,
the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord;
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be all honor and glory, now and forever.
Amen.

LORD'S PRAYER

Risen and ascended Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to
pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and
ever. Amen.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Come to the banquet, for all is now ready.

Lutherans believe the true body and blood of Christ are really present in the Supper
of our Lord under the form of bread and wine and are there distributed and received.
When visiting this congregation all baptized Christians are invited to commune. If
you wish to commune, please come forward to receive the body of our Lord Jesus
Christ with your hands cupped. If you cannot or do not wish to commune you
may come forward with your hands crossed over your chest for a blessing.

LAMB OF GOD

COMMUNION

The body of Christ, given for you.
The blood of Christ, shed for you.
Amen.

SONG DURING DISTRIBUTION: Let Us Break Bread Together

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Let us pray.
We give you thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through the
healing power of this gift of life. In your mercy, strengthen us through this
gift, in faith toward you and in fervent love toward one another; for the sake
of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

BLESSING

The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord's face shine on you with grace and mercy.
The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.
In the name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

SENDING HYMN: We Give Thee but Thine Own (ELW 686)

DISMISSAL

Go in peace. Share the good news.
Thanks be to God.

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK

Thursday, October 23, 2014
James of Jerusalem, martyr, died around 62

One of three early-church leaders named James, this man is identified in the
New Testament and by a historian of the time as a brother of Jesus. Scholars
are uncertain whether this means a blood brother. He was a leader of the
church in Jerusalem.

Sunday, October 26
Philipp Nicolai, died 1608; Johann Heermann, died 1647; Paul
Gerhardt, died 1676; hymnwriters

These great hymnwriters all worked in seventeenth-century Germany in
times of war and plague. Nicolai, a pastor, lost 1,300 parishioners to plague,
170 in one week. He wrote "O Morning Star, how fair and bright" and
"Wake, awake, for night is flying." Heermann's hymns, including "Ah, holy
Jesus," often express the emotions of faith. Gerhardt, perhaps the greatest
Lutheran hymnwriter, was a pastor in Berlin.
