Everybody knows what plugs and sockets are. Here is a definition.

Plugs generally have one or more pins or prongs that are inserted into openings in the mating socket.
Read out the did you know fact.
Plugs and sockets are used everywhere in the world. It has both domestic and industrial uses. Without
almost all our electrical appliances would be useless. There are many types of plugs and sockets in the
world.
Slide 3:
Electricity is distributed through the plug via the live and neutral pins.
These pins are shielded to prevent electricity shorting across the pins when the plug is inserted only
part-way into the socket.
Electrical cable is colour-coded so that the individual wires are easy to identify in poor lighting
conditions.
When the plug is inserted into the socket, the earth wire and pin lead directly to a water pipe or a
similar earth connected on the electricity supply cable. This enables the electricity to run to earth thus
preventing electrical shock if a fault develops in the cable or the appliance connected to it.
Slide 4:
If an electrical appliance such as a kettle, microwave or record player stopped
working, what would you do? Fuses are commonly found inside electrical plugs. The
purpose of the fuse is to protect the delicate, low voltage electronics found inside all
electrical appliances. It prevents too much electricity flowing into the appliance if a
fault occurs, such as a wire coming loose. If the flow of electricity becomes greater
than a certain level, the fuse will "blow". The fuse is really a thin wire inside a glass
or ceramic cartridge.
Slide 5:
When the fuse "blows" the thin wire melts and the electricity supply to the appliance
is cut off. Some fuses, usually the low voltage ones, have a glass cartridge and you
will be able to see if the wire inside is broken. The fuse inside most household
appliance plugs, however, is usually a ceramic cartridge and you will not be able to
see the wire inside. It is for this reason that a fuse tester is needed.
Fuses are quite delicate. If the fuse is old, or it has been dropped, it could "blow" even
if there is no fault in the appliance
Slide 7(Keep this after your slides) :
There are around 12 major plug types in use today, each of which goes by whatever name
their adoptive countries choose.
To make things worse there the sockets are divided into two major types :
The 110-120V and the 220-240V plugs
Slide 8:
Edison's early experiments with direct current (DC) power in the late 1800s netted the first
useful mainstream applications for electricity, but suffered from a tendency to lose voltage
over long distances. Nonetheless, when Nikola Tesla invented a means of long-distance
transmission with alternating current (AC) power, he was doing so in direct competition
with Edison's technology, which happened to be 110v. He stuck with that. By the time
people started to realize that 240v power might not be such a bad idea for the US, it was the
1950s, and switching was out of the question.
After lots of debating it seemed that AC was their only option. Westinghouse Electric, the
first company to buy Tesla's patents for power transmission, settled on an easy standard:
60Hz, and 110v. In EuropeGermany, specificallya company called BEW exercised their
monopoly to push things a little further. They settled somewhat arbitrarily on a 50Hz
frequency, but more importantly jacked voltages up to 240, because, you know, MORE
POWER. And so, the 240 standard slowly spread to the rest of the continent.
Harveys and Philips plugs got famous and people started coming out with their own
variants. Electronics werent globalised back then. And this is why there exist so many
different plugs and sockets

You can use these did you knows:
1)Outlets and plugs with a blade wider on one side than the other are polarized; this is done to maintain
the identity of the neutral conductor in the connected equipment, for safety purposes.
2) There are wall sockets available that can rotate 360 degrees, allowing you to make use of both outlets
at the same time in the case of large, bulky plugs.
