Functions of the Bladder

\
The Bladder has one main function:

To Remove/Excrete Water by Qi transformation
The dirty part of fluids separated by the SI pass on to the Bladder, which further transforms
them into urine. The Bladder subsequently stores and excretes urine.

The Small Intestine and Bladder work together to move fluids in the Lower Burner. This
connection explains how some Heart disharmonies can be transmitted to the Bladder via the SI.

The Bladders function of transforming fluids requires qi and heat, which are provided by
Kidney Yang. It is for this reason that symptoms of Bladder deficiency are similar to those of
Kidney Yang deficiency.

Finally, the Bladder is assisted in its function of fluids transformation by the Triple Energizer, or
more precisely, the Lower Burner, which has the function of making sure the water passages in
the lower part of the body are open and free.

Summary of Point Functions and Indications

Like the Small Intestine, Large Intestine and Triple Energizer channels, there is little direct
clinical relationship between the Bladder channel and the function of the Bladder fu. It is true
that several points of the BL channel are important in the treatment of urinary diseases, but this
is primarily due to the fact that they are back shu points of the TE, KI and BL, local points
lying over the region of the Bladder, or distal points with a special relationship to fluids
transformation.

There is a very wide range of actions and indications for points along this channel, and it would
not serve to try to list it here.

The Bladder Channel

Primary Channel Pathway

1. The channel begins at the inner
canthus of the eye at BL 1 and
ascends along the forehead to the
vertex to intersect with GB 15,
GV 24 (acc. to D, also with
GV 20 at this point.) and
passes through BL 3-6

2. At BL 7 a deep branch passes to
GV 20 and then descends to
the posterior aspect of the head
to the ear, connecting with GB
7-12. (Japanese traditions says
that from here the channel enters
the ear and inside the brain and
reappears at the top of the
head.)

3. A second branch from BL 7
passes into the brain, links with
GV 17, and emerges to meet
the main pathway at BL 10.

4. At BL 10 the meridian splits into
two main pathways. The medial
branch goes down the neck to
GV 14,13, runs parallel to the
vertebral column from BL 11 to
the sacrum, (penetrating deep
into the para-vertebral muscles at
BL 23 to connect with the KI
and BL organs) descends through
the gluteal region and ends in the
popliteal fossa at BL 54.

5. The second branch goes straight
down along the medial border of
the scapula to the buttock, passes
through the gluteal region and
GB 30, travels down the lateral
aspect of the thigh, and rejoins
the other branch at the popliteal
fossa (BL 54)

6. The meridian descends the posterior and posterolateral aspects of the lower leg to the lateral malleolus, then
runs along the lateral aspect of the foot to the 5
th
digit, ending at BL 67.

The Bladder Channel

Divergent Channel

After separating from the primary meridian in the popliteal fossa, the divergent meridian travels to
a point 5 ACI inferior to the sacrum
It then detours into the anal region, connects with the Bladder and disperses in the Kidneys.
Then it follows the spine and disperses in the region of the Heart before emerging at the neck to
region the primary meridian.

Connecting Channel

This leaves with primary meridian at BL 58 on the lateral aspect of the lower leg and connects
with the Kidney meridian.

Muscle Channel

This channels originates at the fifth toe, proceeds to bind at the lateral malleolus and then binds at
the lateral aspect of the knee.
A lower branch extends below the lateral malleolus to the heel, then ascends to bind at the lateral
margin of the popliteal fossa.
Another branch starts at the joining of the lateral and medial heads of the gastrocnemius muscle
and ascends to bind at the medial margin of the popliteal fossa.
These two branches join in the gluteal region and continue up the side of the spine to the nape of
the neck, where a branch passes inwards to the root of the tongue.
Superior to he neck, the channel binds with the occiput and passes over the head to bind at the
bridge of the nose.
A branch crosses the top of the eye and binds at the inferior border of the nose.
Another branch passes form the lateral margin of the posterior axillary crease to bind with LI 15 at
the shoulder.
Another pathway crosses below the axilla and travels over the chest, emerging at the
supraclavicular fossa and ascending to bind at GB 12, posterior to the ear.
A further branch emerges from the supraclavicular fossa and crosses the face to a point beside the
nose.

Name Bright Eyes
Jing: eye, pupil
Ming: to brighten, bright
Alternate Names: Bright Essence, Tear Hole
Inner Canthus
BL 1 is called Bright Eyes because it treats a variety of eye problems and improves
the eyesight. The character ming is particularly appropriate for representing the eyes
because it is composed of the character for sun & moon, and the sun and moon are
called the two eyes of heaven and earth. Furthermore, it is said that when the five
viscera flourish, the eyes shine like the sun and moon.

The alternate name, Bright Essence, if not due to mistranscription is a reference to the
theory that essence manifests in the eyes. As the Spiritual Axis states, The essential
qi of the five viscera and six bowels flows up into the eyes to manifest as essence.

LJ An alternate name for BL 1 is also pronounced Ying Ming, but is based on a
different character. The name may be translated as "Radiance of Jing." When the fires
of ming men burn brightly, the eyes shine with a radiance that reflects the purity of
one's essential nature (jing). This point plays a crucial role in mediating the interaction
of anterior and posterior heaven.

Other
There is a difference between looking and seeing. We tend to look at each
other and form a judgment, but when you SEE, no judgment is needed.
This point helps a person begin to see with his/her Spirits eye. When you see
with your Spirit, you see things you never dreamed existed.
This is not a Window but has the same effect if its used with Kidney
23/24/25. If used this way, it really accesses the patient.
This point is also valuable for the physical eye. It brightens up images physically,
mentally and spiritually. This point has more direct control over secretions than
any other point, making it the best hormonal point. It can clear edema of the
mind, flooding, etc. It also brings energy to the Bladder meridian on any level.
Use this point if the patient has eczema and has ever used cortisone.

Alternate Names: At the Eyebrow, Eyebrow
Root of the Eyebrow,
When bamboo is gathered and put in branches, Origin Pillar, Pillar Border,
it can be seen to resemble a large eyebrow. Man Present, Bright Light,
The character cuan, meaning to gather, has a hand Beginning of Light,
radical. Because BL 2 is located at the inner extreme Night Light, Tear Hole
of the eyebrow, its position is analogous to the hand that gathers the bamboo.

BL 2 may be translated as Bamboo Gathering. The eyebrow resembles a bamboo
leaf and the inner corner, where the point is located, is the spot where the brow (or
leaf) gathers.

Other
This point can be used as a back up to the entry point.
It is also good for sinus and head type symptoms when caused by Water
jamming up.
It is a great anti-hay fever point.

Name Light Guard
Cheng: To undertake as ones responsibility;
to carry, to receive, hold
Guang: Light, to shine
Alternate Name: Light Guard

The character Cheng can mean to take on responsibility for a task. The second
character, Guang means light and may be taken as a representation of the eyesight.
Because BL 6 protects the eyesight and treats related disorders, this point can be
said to bear responsibility for or to be a guardian of the eyesight (hence, Light
Guard).

This point name might also be rendered as Receiving the Light, as Cheng can also
mean to receive (the light in this instance being sunlight, or perhaps the glow of the
heads yang qi).

Other
This point brings light where there was darkness. It is good when a persons
mind is imprisoned and tormented (severe mental disorders).
You must wait until a person is ready to receive the light before using this point.

Alternate Names: Celestial Connection
Celestial Lord,
The character Tian can be considered a Celestial White,
reference to the vertex of the head, while the Celestial Mortar,
character Tong may be construed as indicating Old as the Heavens
the connecting vessel that runs from BL 7 to GV 20;
hence the name Celestial Connection.

Rendered as Unblock Heaven, the name is a reflection of this points function of
clearing the nose. Heaven here refers to the uppermost viscus, the lung, which opens
at the nose.

Other
This point is strongest on the Spirit level but also strong on the mental level.
It brings peace and calm where there is trouble (despair, chaos, mania at Spirit

Name Declining Connection
Luo: mesh, connect; connecting vessel
Que: to retreat; refuse
Alternate Names: Brain Cover, Strong Yang
Connecting Cleft

The path of the BL channel begins its steep decline after crossing the vertex of the
head and passing through BL 8. The character Luo may be a reference to the
connecting vessels located in the vicinity of this point (one vessel connects to the
brain).

Luo are small red vessels in the eye. Needling this point causes these vessels to
recede, thus the point name could also be rendered as Vessel Recession.

Name Celestial Pillar
Tian: Celestial, of the heavens; sky; Nature;
Heaven
Zhu: Pillar
The two muscles at the nape of the neck (trapezius) appear like two pillars supporting the
head (heaven). The word pillar can also be interpreted as alluding to the cervical vertebrae,
because in ancient times the vertebrae of the neck were collectively called tian zhu gu, the
celestial pillar bone. As might be expected from the points location, BL 10 treats disorders
of the neck. BL 10 has a STAR name. It is a star in the constellation Draco.

LJ This point is situated at the top of the trapezius muscle and is directly under the occipital
bone. The trapezius is the pillar that literally holds up the head, which represents heaven. As
the spine is the pillar of the body, this point is the pillar of the spirit that holds one's head up
and stands tall. In Chinese mythology, the body of the heavenly ancestor Pan-gu was the
pillar that unified heaven and earth before the human race lost its original nature. I have often
used this point combination with BL 54, GV 3 and ST 36 to empower a person to stand
up for himself.
Other
This is an excellent point, as powerful as the Kidney chest points. Use it when a patient
needs the strength of the heavens so that he/she can see and hold himself/herself up, be
strong and move on in life.
The person may be frightened of what he/she might see or be. He/she may be
overwhelmed and would rather stay in prison than see something thats perceived as
too much. Beware of opening this Window before the patient is ready to see.
This is a pillar which brings I can spirit, brings courage with the capacity to see.
Habitual mental negativity is exposed to new possibilities and the patient must have the
strength to support the new vision or the treatment wont be effective. The neck,
shoulders and upper back are the shock absorbers of our chest. Its where we live. This
point helps loosen, lubricate and relieve tension here.

In ancient China the spinal vertebrae were referred to as zhu gu, shuttle bones,
because the vertebrae resembled a shuttle weaving in and out of the pattern formed
by the posterior rib cage. The first vertebra, being the most prominent, is labeled with
the epithet great. This point is located just lateral to that bone, hence the name.

amongst the muscles that run parallel to the spine, this point functions in treating
disorders of the back and spine. In addition, BL 29 is located lateral to BL 33,
Central Bone-Hole. The parallel in name and location are a useful mnemonic and may
be part of the reason BL 29 is called Central Backbone Shu instead of just Backbone
Shu.

Name White Ring Shu
Bai: white
Huan: a ring, a bracelet; to encircle
Shu: Acupuncture point
Alternate Names: Jade Ring Shu,
Jade House Shu
White ring in Taoist metaphysics refers tot he area of the body where essence is
stored. The point name implies that BL 30 is connected with this area. This
interpretation is confirmed by the description of the term jade ring (an alternate term
for white ring) provided by Zhang Zi-Yang:

The heart above, the kidney below, the spleen to the left, liver to the
right, lifes door (i.e. genitals) to the front, the secret door (i.e. anus)
to the back, it connects like a ring, white like silk one inch in diameter.
It wraps the bodys essence and is called the jade ring; this area is
directly behind the navel and is the root of mans lifeline.

The bladder channel circles back up to Upper Bone-Hole (BL 31) after passing
through this point. Clinically, BL 30 treats disorders that are described with the
word white such as white vaginal discharge and white turbidity (urethral discharge).

Other
The White Ring is the anal sphincter. Use this point for local problems there.

Other
This is a meeting place of the predominantly yang vessels.
It can be used to lift the yang energy of a persons mind, spirit and body.

Name Po Door
Po: Soul, spirit
Hu: Door

Other
This point has a lot to do with the treatment of the spirit of Metal. Think of
precious gemstones, gold, the alchemists dream of turning metal to gold, the
heavenly quality of existence, refining, getting to the essence of a persons spirit.
This is one of the strongest spirit points. It reinforces the spirit/soul and opens the
patients eyes when the patient has given up.
Sometimes people have Spirits that are weak and emaciated because they have shut
spirit off on a deeper level (maybe repressed it). This can cause depression or a
lack of inspiration. On the other end, it may cause the patient to attempt to get in
touch with the God within by going on spiritual quests and meditations. Opening
the Soul Door allows someone to have contact with the world of essence when
he/she has shut Spirit off from a deeper level. It gives Spiritual revival, thus opening
up new vistas.
This point can be used early on in treatment. Use it if Kidney 24 and CV 1 have
no effect. Use of moxa on this point brings warmth directly to the Spirit. Also,
Bladder 37 and 39 can be used to enhance the quality of the officials. It helps
reinforce the fatherly Spirit, a gate that when opened allows the Spirit to flow out.
JG: This point helps a person recover their soul. It gives embodied nourishment
and gives things meaning. Use when life becomes so exteriorized that the person is
almost mechanical and cant even imagine an inner life. Sink in and fill them from this
interior place. I feel like Im losing my soul. Its nice to use BL 37 and BL 39
together when the LU and HT pulses stay at a low level with an empty quality.

Name Gao Huang Shu
Gao: Area below the heart
Huang: Membrane just above diaphragm
Shu: Acupuncture point

The area labeled Gao Huang is just below the Heart. In ancient texts it is said to contain vital
organs and to defy all cure if affected by disease. The Four Books of Acupuncture states
that diseases located above Huang and below Gao can be treated by neither herbs nor
acupuncture, although moxa on BL 38 can bring results. This is the reason for the name.

Other
This point has a more general use than any other outer bladder point.
It is good for weakness of blood, anemia, bad circulation, bad quality of blood. It
brings a fresh surge of vital, clear energy to the mind and spirit, directly affecting the
quality of the patients qi energy.
Sometimes this is called the chronic illness point.
This point goes to the vitals rather than the spirit, more physical and mental stuff. It
literally enriches the vitality of the body, mind and spirit.
Use it when the patient is very cold, lacks warmth in body, mind or Spirit (or for
patients with cold hands and cold feet).
Its good for depression, negativity, sexual unhappiness or inhibition.
JG: This point deeply nourishes blood. Use when there is a fragility to the person and
you want to build them up. Its also supportive when there are chronic relationship
losses or when the pericardium is hit hard and cant recover its own inner strength.

Name Spirit Hall
Shen: Spirit
Tang: Hall, main room of a house; temple,
Memorial

The heart stores the Spirit. BL 39 is later to the Heart Shu point and is therefore
called Spirit Hall. The frequent usage of Tang, hall, in acupuncture point names may
be simply poetic, or perhaps has some abstruse meaning. In this case, it is more
concretely appropriate because in ancient times it was a word for temple, which is a
place where a spirit resides.

Other
This point opens the Hall of the Spirit to the residence of the Emperor Shen. It
is a place of the very essence, it is the center, the throne room; its a huge
meeting place, a grand place to go to.
Where Bladder 37 opened a door upon the surface, this point actually opens
up the hall of the King and Spirit so that it can flow out.
Use this point for strains on the heart like shock, emotional crisis, heartbreak,
bereavement, cardiac arrest.
Sometimes the Supreme Controller is so full of pity that he cant take control;
sometimes he loses his way or is weak and a person feels resigned and doesnt
know what to do. If there is a lack of will or no desire to live, this point
restores the Spirit.
Only treat Fire CFs with this point unless the patients heart has been hit.
You could go to the Spirit Hall even if the person is not depleted to
experience a feeling of richness, similar to CV 8.
JG: This is more of a settling point. It nourishes the Heart and settles the Shen,
giving a place for spirit to reside that is contained and quiet.

Name Yi Xi
Yi: A sighing, laughing sound
Xi: A sighing, laughing sound

Numerous texts state that when this point is palpated firmly, the patient will put forth
an yi xi sound. This is the reason for the point name.

Other
This point is for mental pain and griefwhen a person is filled with a cry of
anguish.
Use it when a person is breaking under the weight of physical or mental pain or
grief; he/she has reached the limitit is too much.
It is also good for people who are hanging on to internal pain.
Like a kind of Window, it releases the depth of pain on any CF, calming
everything down.

Name Diaphragm Pass
Ge: Diaphragm
Guan: Pass, gate

This point is located lateral to the Diaphragm Shu. The ancients may have chosen the
guan appellation because the diaphragm represents a type of border separating the
upper burner from the middle burner. In those times, roads had passes called guan at
political borders. Pass could also simply be a way of indicating a place of entry and
exit of qi.

Other
Use this point when a patient has difficulty with breathing or digestion,
especially when associated with mental problems.
Its good for hiatus hernia, spasm, shock, fear of cold or dark.
It responds well to moxa if the patient is cold in the upper or lower jiao.

Name Hun Gate
Hun: Soul, Spirit
Men: Gate, door

The Hun (spirit stored in the Liver) is said to enter and leave the body through this
point. This may be an extrapolation of the fact that this point is next to the Liver shu,
or that the point is located at about the level of the Liver.

Other
This point is associated with the Liver and is a general point for cleansing the
liver on a body, mind, or spirit level. Its a great point for alcoholics, drug
addicts, or someone who needs help being weaned off of medication.
This point has the same connotations as Bladder 37, in terms of getting to the
core of the Spirit. You cannot go deeper. This is the most potent, powerful
point for resurrecting the Spirit. It often gives the result of the combination of
Bladder 37, Bladder 39 plus a bit more. Be cautious as it is so potent.
This point takes away a lot of stress and anxiety when the Liver official is
depressed and feels hopeless because he has no plans, cant see tomorrow, and
doesnt care what is going to happen. The patient may be confused or spaced
out.
Use this point after using Kidney 24, CV 1 and Bladder 37. Sometimes only
the door opens, but the gate doesnt.

The Gall Bladder inner and outer shu points are the uppermost representation of a

the yang associated points on the channel. Since the GB is the yang manifestation of
Wood and spring is the head season of the yang, this might be a further reason for
naming BL 43 Headrope.

Other
This point is good for Gall Bladder symptoms on the mental/spirit levelit is
concerned with purity of the mind.

Other
This point has more of an effect on the Mind than the Spirit or body.
It is good for clearing out garbage and filth from the mind and helps for mental
disorder, stagnation, mental weakness or sickness of the mind. People who are
depressives and frustrated are good candidates, as this point revitalizes mental
movement and distribution as well as dispelling mental obsessions.
This point is also helpful if a person is rigid, stubborn, obsessed, obstinate, not
open and receptive or is too easily moved or swayed. It softens up rigidity
when moxa is used and the point is tonified.
Its also good if Earth is boggy and swampedthe person may be drowning in

Other
Use this point on Earth CFs. Its for people who are undernourished in mind
and spirit (can never reap a harvest). This point is like a reservoir.
It aids in the mental ingestion of food and the assimilation of thoughts and
ideas. Its good if a person has trouble eating, vomits after eating, or feels that
food is stuck in the digestive tract.

Name Will Chamber
Zhi: will, ambition
Shi: room, chamber
Alternate Names: Palace of Essence

LJ This point is intimately associated with the relationship between the human heart and
the fulfillment of destiny through the recognition and cultivation of inborn potential as
stored in jing. According to Zhu Xi, The will lies in the deepest recesses of the
mind and therefore the doctors say the will belongs to the kidneys. The 34
th
difficult
issue of the Nanjing tells us that the kidneys store the jing and the zhi, and that the
zhi is the spirit (shen) of the kidneys.

The authentic (zhen) heart is lost in the individuals inevitable fall from original
nature. The memory of this true nature is stored in jing as a mandate from heaven. It
is in directing the mind down into the jing, the depths of self, via the zhi, that the
lost individual may rediscover heavens commands, and return to bringing his heart
back into the world fully expressed. Hence the function of this point is to harmonize
the relationship between kidney jing, heart shen, and human will. With the careful
direction of the practitioner, this point may serve to soften an overly hard will
and protect a depleted jing or strengthen will to focus the shen on unused potential.

Other
This point is good for Water imbalances due to fear/anxiety on a mental level.
Everyone should have ambitions, whether or not they fulfill them is different.
The Kidneys control the Qi we are born with, thus its a good point for
someone with a weak hold on life (weak-willed) because it goes directly to the
will. Use it when theres no energy to give a person the drive, and he/she finds
excuses and suppresses the will. This point is for the person who is in a rut, has
nothing to aim for and does not know what he/she wants to do.

M

Name Bladder Huang
Bao: bladder; womb, uterus; afterbirth
Huang: the membrane located above the
Diaphragm

The character bao is composed of a flesh radical and bao, meaning to wrap. It is used
in older texts to refer to bladders in general or the womb in particular. Since Essential
Questions states that the huang originates below the navel, the name is probably a
reference to the womb or the urinary bladder.

BL 53 is closely related to the urinary bladder because it is a bladder channel point
and is located later to the bladder shu and it is used to treat urinary system disorders
such as strangury and urinary block. In theory, BL 53 is also related to the womb
because the BL and KI are paired meridians and the womb depends on kidney qi.

Other
The pure love of the heart is needed to allow the person to conceive. Often
this link is broken after there has been an abortion, miscarriage, or the person is
infertile. Use this when the heart and womb have become separated; they are
not working closely together.
In the case of men, the womb stands for more than just childbirth events. It
incorporates the ability of a person to mother and nurture himself.
Its a very good point for people who are having difficulty conceiving.
This point is the outer AEP for the Bladder; it feeds all of the lumbar area. It
gives a general boost to the supportive power of the bladder on both a mental
and physical level.
Its also good for mental turmoil, anxiety, fear, suicidal or phobic
It has a big effect on the pelvic area. Its good when urine retention/pain,
frigidity, infertility, and bad periods are particularly linked to emotional
problems.

Name Sequential Limit
Zhi: sequence, order
Bian: side; border, limit, edge; close by

This is the last outer branch point before the channel path runs down the back of the
leg. It is therefore, the lower limit of that sequence and is appropriately named
sequential Limit. Although zhi, sequence is certainly a reference to the outer branch,
if it is taken to mean side, may be a way of indicating that this point treats diseases
affecting the side of the body. This is a clinically relevant idea because this point is
important in the treatment of sciatic pain and sciatica often involves the lateral aspect
of the legs.

Alternate Names: Blood cleft, Central Cleft,
Cleft Center

This point is at the center of the crease at the bend of the knee and is thus named
Bend Middle. The functions of clearing blood, draining heat and treating acute back
sprain are best activated by drawing blood from the small veins surrounding the point.
Thus, it is sometimes referred to by the name Blood Cleft.

Other
This point is a tremendous balancer of fluids; it is the Earth point in Water and
helps control uncontrolled Water, contain choppiness and maintain stability.
It can give big pulse changes and is good for the blood, sciatica, arthritic knees,
swollen feet, nervousness/shivering and loss of head hair.
JG: This point brings in the stability of Earth. Like an island in the stream, it
contains the reserves; usually theres some aspect of uncontrolled choppy
waters. Its good for the person who cant maintain their own equilibrium and
basically says to the BodyMindSpirit: Im planting you right here, maintain

Yang: yang, the opposite of yin

This point is located just below the earth/sea point of the bladder channel. It is
furthermore situated just below the area of the popliteal crease where an internal
branch of the bladder channel unites with the main channel. The character he,
meaning union, reflects both of these facts, while yang can be taken as a
representation of the bladder, which is a yang organ.

Name Sinew Support
Cheng: To support; to receive
Jin: sinew, muscle, tendon
Alternate Names: Calf Intestine, Rectum

Located in the upper gastrocnemius muscle and useful in treating spasm of that muscle
and other similar ailments in the local area, BL 56 truly provides Sinew Support. As
it is located below the two sinews at the back of the knee, the point name may also
refer specifically to those sinews.

In the Systemized Canon of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, there are references to the
area at the top of the back of the lower leg as calf intestine. The alternate point
name Calf Intestine probably derives from this reference.

The alternate name Rectum may refer to the fact that a branch of the BL channel
departs from the main channel at the popliteal fossa and rises to the rectal region.
Additionally, many points in the calf area treat rectal disorders.

Other
This point brings strength and support to muscles themselves. Remember the
musculature allows us to be mobile and fluid.

a mountain. This point is located in a position that supports
The weight of that mountain. Additionally, the gastrocnemius muscle divides at this
point, creating an indentation that resembles the character ren, which means man. The
point may therefore be called Mountain Support because the area resembles a man
bearing the weight of a mountain.

Other

Name Instep Yang
Fu: the instep, the metartarsus
Yang: yang, the complement of yin
Alternate Names: Give Yang,
Yang Attachment,
Yang Correction
Fu is similar to fu, which means to assist. This would imply that because the three leg
yang channels run close together at this point, they work to assist each other. The
similarity of these two characters gives the point a double meaning.

BL 59 is also known by the names Give Yang and Yang Attachment. Both these
characters are pronounced fu yang. This pronunciation differs only in tone and has
resulted in considerable confusion as to which is original. One character means to
give, thus Give Yang is probably a reference to the points location adjacent to the
luo point, where the yang qi of the BL channel is given to the KI channel. The
character fu in Yang Attachment can mean to be near or to be attached. If it is
considered to mean to be near, then the name Yang Attachment implies the points
location near the other two yang channels. If on the other hand, it means to be
attached, then the name is either a reference to the point being the xi cleft point of
the yang heel vessel or to its proximity to the luo point.

Alternate Name: Quieting of Evil

The character pu means a servant or person of inferior rank. BL 61 is an intersection
point of the yang heel vessel and the bladder channel. The yang heel vessel can
therefore be likened to a visitor of inferior rank at the BL channel, a subservient
visitor. When a visitor of inferior rank arrives he kneels down in front of the host. The
visitors hands fall to where the point is located. One must get down on hands and
knees to locate the point on oneself, thus assuming the position of a Subservient
Visitor.

Name Extending Vessel
Shen: to extend; the 9
th
of the 12 earthly
branches
Mai: vessel; pulse
Alternate Names: Yang Motility (2 different
characters used for motility)
Ghost Road
The yang heel vessel extends upward from this point; hence the name Extending
Vessel. Supporting this interpretation is the fact that an alternate name is Yang
Motility.

When the character shen is used to denote the 9
th
of the twelve earthly branches, it
may be interpreted as referring to shen shi, the ninth watch of the day (3-5pm),
which is the time associated with the Bladder channel.

Other
Use this point with Kidney 6 for physical level problems. Both have links to the
8 extra meridians.
Its also good to use with Bladder 64 for a tense spine.
Use it for reinforcing other points.
It has a direct effect on the endocrine glands.

is given as directly inferior to the anterior border of the LM, on the inferior border
of the cuboid bone (which seems contradictory), at the mid-point of the line joining
BL 62 and BL 64, in the depression lateral to the cuboid bone, as well as anterior

Name Metal Gate
Jin: metal, gold
Men: gate, door
Jin Men Alternate Names: Gate Beam, Beam Gate

Metal is the element of the 5 elements associated with the ninth watch (3-5pm),
with which the bladder channel is associated. Bladder channel qi and blood flow
through this point during that period; hence the name Metal Gate. BL 63 is also the
intersection point of the BL and Yang Linking vessel, and may thus be likened to a
gate between the two. Although BL 63 is not directly associated with Metal, the
name is a reminder of the restraint of wood by metal in the ko cycle. This point name
is also a place name.

Other
This point is very powerful but not often very stable. It can give big quality
changes in the pulses.
Its the Golden Doorthe door which the Emperor controls. This point is a
gate, so make sure it is needed. You can open or close the door oil it for lack
of secretions to get the bladder to hold Water.
Its good to use when Water is sluggish, stagnant or torrential (fear produces
stillness or movement).
JG: This point is a more activating, filling point. You have some reserves built
up, now step into your own strength. It gives a person an opening into their
own power.

Name Capital Bone
Jing: capital; large, big; source, origin
Gu: bone
Alternate Name: Large Bone

The character jing carries the meaning of great or big (capital). The metatarsal bone
was in ancient times called jing gu, capital bone. The point name thus reveals the
points location. The alternate name, Large Bone, confirms this interpretation. Because
the character jing also had, in the past, a meaning of yuan, source of origin, the name
is also an indication of the function of the point.

Gu: bone

The joint at the base of the small toe was at one time called the shu gu, meaning
bundle bone, probably because it appears to be the place where the foot bones
are bundled together. This point, located just proximal to the joint, derives its name
from the location.

Name Valley Passage
Tong: to pass through, to unblock; to
conduct i.e., a substance
Gu: valley
Alternate Name: Foot Valley Passage

This point is near the end of the bladder channel and the beginning of the KI channel.
After qi passes through BL 67 and KI 1 it arrives at Blazing Valley. BL 66 is a
passage to that valley, or a valley passage. As well, BL 66 is the spring (water)
point. The point is like a Valley Passage that conducts the qi onward to the stream,
river and uniting points.

JG: This point is really about resting and filling. A valley is a place where energy
gathers strength. Its penetratingon yang official, so theres some aspect of
movement involved. Use if someone has really exhausted their reserves

Name Reaching Yin
Zhi: to arrive at, to reach; extremely, most
Yin: yin, the complement of yang
Alternate Name: Digit Well

The character zhi can mean to arrive at or to reach. BL 67 is the last point on the BL
channel, from which the qi then passes to the KI channel. Therefore, BL 67 can be
said to be Reaching Yin. Alternately, we may recall that the KI is referred to as
extreme yin in the Essential Questions. If the character zhi is interpreted as meaning
extreme, then the point name is indicative of the points connection to the kidney. A
rendering of the points name as Extremity of Yin is also valid if we consider the tenet
that the extreme or yin or yang engenders its complement. Thus we are reminded that
the very end of the yang channel contains the beginnings of the yin and vice versa.

Other
JG: Use when a person has reached their limit of what they can endure. It turns
breached babies. Things to do with the eyes and head. The energy is quickly
changing at this point.
