Principal Functions:

1. Govern Qi and Respiration

This is the most important LU function.
a. The LU inhales clean qi and exhales dirty qi. The constant
exchange and renewal of qi ensures the proper functioning of
all physiological processes which use qi.
. The LU helps in the actual process of qi formation. !u qi " air
# $ong qi which nourishes the %eart and Lungs and
promotes their functions of respiration and ruling the &lood'
helps push (i and &lood to the lims' and in)uences speech
and *oice.
2. Control channels and blood vessels
a. +f LU qi is strong' the circulation of qi and lood will e good
and the lims will e warm. +f LU qi is wea,' qi will not e
ale to push the &lood and the lims' particularly the hands'
will e cold.
3. Control dispersing and descending
a. The LU spreads -ei qi and ody )uids all o*er the ody to
the space etween the s,in and muscles. -ei qi warms the
s,in and muscles and protects the ody from .PFs. The LU
also spread ody )uids to the s,in in the form of a /ne
mist. This mist moistens the s,in and regulates the opening
and closing of pores and sweating.
. LU qi must descend to communicate with the 0+ which
holds qi. The LU directs )uids to the 0+ and &L for excretion.
LU qi gi*es the L+ the qi to excrete waste.
4. Regulate Water passages
a. 1fter recei*ing the re/ned )uids from the 2pleen' the LU
reduce them to a /ne mist and spray them throughout the
area under the s,in. +n health' the )uids are e*enly spread all
o*er the ody and the opening and closing of the pores is
normal.
. The LU also directs )uids to the 0i and &L. The 0+ recei*e
them and *apori3e part of them efore sending them ac, up
to the LU to ,eep them moist.
