Tool, Context, & Activity Ideas
These tools are currently being used in a French Second language classroom but the activities described
below could be easily adapted to fit any subject.

TOOL Name: Edmodo
TOOL URL https://www.edmodo.com/
Contributor: Corina Summerfelt
Grade Level: 9-12
Class/Course/Subject: French as a Second Language
Activity Idea 1:
Using the small groups feature to create choice for students according to
different levels of interest/ability for reading/comments: Edmodo has a
feature that allows the teacher to enrol the students into smaller groups
within each class. The smaller groups are closed to the members that are
enrolled. I often have students working at different levels of ability in every
class. According to the new French curriculum, we are supposed to be
evaluating students on their abilities within their language level as opposed
to specific grade level requirement. The levels are based on the Common
European Framework Reference (CEFR). Once I determine a students ability
(A1, A2 etc...) I can use the small group feature to assign them recommended
readings/assignment for their level. Equally, if they are interested in doing
more, I could enrol them in a higher group. Within this group they could
watch videos, respond to readings, and create discussion with a group that is
more tailored to their individual level.
Activity Idea 2:
Using the assignment turn-in feature to create weekly journal reflection:
Edmodo has two features that are very handy. First I can create an
assignment that may be turned in online. Since I can view this very quickly
and see who has handed it in or not, I find the tool very successful for a
weekly guided reflection activity. In this activity I ask students to set a goal,
comment on their previous goal and speak to their progress/frustrations,
provide some concrete examples to demonstrate their learning. This is also
the place where they can ask me questions. The second feature allows me to
release the assignment at a date/time that I can pre-set. This way, I am able
to set up the weekly reflection activity for the entire course at the beginning.
I can comment, reply, and see where students are at a glance.
Activity Idea 3:
Using the poll class feature to do quick student assessment: After specific
lessons I like to use the poll feature to check in with students to see where
they are in terms of learning. The poll feature is anonymous and allows the
students to weigh in on learning without feeling self-conscious of what
others will think. The students can also reply to the poll with more specific
comments/questions that others can see.

NOTES: The sole district policy in SD 22 related to internet usage and access was created when teachers
primarily shared information via a teacher webpage which was stored on the district server. The policy
does not appear to address the current issues of social media. However, with consideration to
informing parents of usage and obtaining their permission the crossover appears evident. Additionally, I
found 1 reference that states that all electronic communication is subject to the provisions addressed
under FoIPPA, so where my district policy falls short, I will refer to FoIPPA. I also consulted my schools
code of conduct regarding the use of personal devices as directed in the policy.

Permission Slip
Informed Consent Permission Slip for online use in Madame Summerfelts French classes.
Dear parent/guardian,
As part of the French as a Second Language courses at Fulton, your child will be participating in an online
independent study program. The aim of this program is to help students progress in the target language
at an individual pace that is appropriate for his/her level of understanding.
I feel that participating in this program will support your childs unique educational goals. The
independent language study program that I have developed will attempt to provide each student a
chance to learn and reflect in a manner that allows for immediate feedback and resources appropriate
to the skills and knowledge required by your childs personal learning needs.
As a BC teacher, I am subject to the BC Freedom and Information and Protection of Privacy Act. In
accordance with this Act, I must at all times protect the privacy of students under my care. Under this
Act I cannot use personal and identifiable information of a student (e.g., first name, last name, school,
grade, teacher, class etc.,), including student work, without the written consent of the students parent
or guardian. I am aware that some parents/guardians may not be comfortable publishing their childs
content online.
This letter of informed consent is mainly to ask your permission for your child to set up a private account
on Edmodo allowing students to access and post to information provided, and upload non-personal
assignments. The letter further outlines all of the online web 2.0 tools, including Duolingo that I will be
using as part of the independent study program. Please review the tools to see how they will help your
childs learning in French this semester. In each case, if you should not wish for your child to participate,
you may refuse consent and an alternative will be provided with no adverse effects to your childs
grades.
Name and Use of Web 2.0 Tool:
EDMODO: https://www.edmodo.com
As a place for students to communicate and see what is happening in our program, we will be using
Edmodo as central hub for communications. Edmodo allows for the teacher to post assignments, due
dates, and for students to ask immediate questions and to submit feedback and reflection for
immediate review. Additionally, Edmodo allows students to work collaboratively online in a manner that
allows them to see how others are responding to target language questions but allows the teacher to
monitor content. Students direct message the teacher for information but can only speak to each other
via the class forum. Edmodo is a secure site that is set to private. As an added bonus, students can
provide parents with an access code to any content that he/she may be posting. To join Edmodo the
teacher will provide a group code for students.

Identifiable privacy risks: Edmodo requires users to provide a first and last name to create an account
but I have encouraged students to use a pseudonym or other non-identifiable name for themselves
when joining this group. The signup has the option to add an email but this is not necessary to join the
group. According to Edmodos user agreement and privacy policy, all personal information uploaded will
be collected and stored by edmodo.com by servers currently located in the United States and may be
shared with Edmodos clients. The account is secure but Edmodo does not take responsibility for any
links that the students may access or any power outages that may result in a compromise of security.

Name and Use of Web 2.0 Tool:
Duolingo: https://www.duolingo.com/ To see the full benefits of what Duolingo can do go the site and
take a quick tour. Duolingo is a gamified learning experience that allows students to review and learn
French at their own pace Students have the option of beginning with the basics or taking a test to skip
ahead. The students love Duolingo because they move ahead when they are ready and they have
options to learn skills and vocabulary that they feel is relevant. As a teacher, I have found that the
students reflection after using this program has been thoughtful and has allowed for them to ask for
grammar explanations that are based on their needs as opposed to me directed them to learn grammar
for the needs of a test.
Duolingo allows users to (i) learn or practice a language while they translate content from the Web and
elsewhere, (ii) submit material for translation by other users, and in some cases (iii) submit translated
language courses or new language courses. Users interested in learning or practicing a language are
presented with different types of educational activities; while they perform these activities, they also
generate valuable data such as translations of Web content.
Identifiable privacy risks: Duolingo requires students to register by uploading their username and valid
email address. According to Duolingos user agreement and privacy policy, all personal information
uploaded will be collected and stored by Duolingo in the United States and may be shared with
Duolingos clients only if they [Duolingo] believe it is necessary to the upkeep of the service. According
to Duolingo any work that you submit for translation is property of Duolingo under the terms of
contract.

Name and Use of Web 2.0 Tool:
Quizlet: http://quizlet.com/
Quizlet is a tool that allows for teachers to create and share vocabulary flashcards. Learning French
requires students to memorize between 500-1000 new words in every course level. The more times
students have to interact with the vocabulary, the more likely they are to internalize it. Quizlet has a
variety of tasks that students may use, including games, to review the vocabulary that is specific to our
classes at Fulton. I have created a class list for each of the students and they may view and interact with
the lists without giving information or joining the class. However, the option exists for the students to
create an account and join the class. The advantage would be that the teacher could then review the
students progress and the student could earn trophies of achievement. Joining the class site is optional
at the discretion of the parents.
Identifiable privacy risks:
Quizlet does not collect information about the user unless the user creates an account and agrees to the
terms of service. The information is stored on a server in the United States and is not shared with third
party services unless it pertains to the service and upkeep of the tools. Quizlet does not review the
materials posted to the site and does not take responsibility for any inappropriate content that may be
viewed. The teacher has taken care to review any material posted on the site is appropriate for the
learning needs of the students.

Name and Use of Web 2.0 Tool:
ClassDojo:
ClassDojo is a private behaviour tracking web tool. In the French classroom, the tool is used as a way for
the student to actively track his/her participation in the classroom. The teacher will set up the account
by using the students first name only [unless a parent requests the use of a pseudonym] and no other
information is necessary. If as a parent, you wish you or your child to set up their own account, you may
request and access code and I will issue an invitation. [The creating of an account will require the use fo
an active email address for activation.] The points are earned by the student based on completing in
task activities. Many of these points may be earned during the online independent study time such as
posting to French topics on Edmodo, leveling up language skills in Duolingo or memorizing vocabulary
flashcards on Quizlet.
Edmodo Resource Package By Corina Summerfelt Date: October 2014

Identifiable privacy risks:
If a parent or student decided to set up an account via the teacher invitation code, then communication
can happen between both parent/student and teacher. The site is private, but parents with access
codes will be able to view all communications pertaining to the student involved. According to
ClassDojos user agreement and privacy policy, all personal information uploaded will be collected and
stored by edmodo.com by servers currently located in the United States.
Please review the ClassDojos terms of service: https://www.classdojo.com/terms and privacy
agreement: https://www.classdojo.com/privacy for further information.

The combination of the above tools has allowed me to create a program that I believe contributes to the
learning of your child in a way that addresses his/her unique needs as a student.
You may help your child and protect against unauthorized access to the account and Personal
Information by selecting and protecting a password appropriately and reminding him/her to limit access
to the computer and browser by signing off when finished accessing an account.
You may withdraw your consent at any time. Please fill out and return the tear away section below if
you give permission to have your childs work shared and posted as described. If you have further
questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at csummerfelt@sd22.bc.ca or at the school at
250-545-1348. Thank you for your consideration.
