Introduction
Dynamic shear rheometer test
The EVA was obtained from the S.A.E.L. (Algerian Society of
elastomer). EVA chosen for this study is a semi-crystalline plastomeric
containing 18% vinyl acetate with a melt index of 2.7 g/10 min. It is in
the form of whitish lens (2-5 mm diameter).

Preparation of EVA modified bitumen
The rheological properties of the modified binders were characterized
using dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). The results of the investigation
indicate that the EVA polymer improve rheological properties of base
bitumen, such as increased elastic responses (increased complex shear
modulus and decreased phase angle) at low to high temperatures.
In this research work, the effects of ethylene-vinyl-acetate (EVA)
modification on the rheological characteristics of pure bitumen were
investigated. The polymer modified bitumens (PMBs) were prepared
by mixing bitumen with EVA to four polymer contents using laboratory
mixer.
The effects of polymer content on the rheological properties of the
polymer modified bitumen were analyzed.
The different EVA PMB were coded as PMB: base bitumen, polymer
type, polymer content such as PMB-EVA3 for the EVA PMB produced
with base Bitumen and 3% EVApolymer content.

versus temperature at 10 rads-1
for bitumen modified by different
content of EVA polymer.
Complex shear modulus data of the PMBs are higher than of base
bitumen. These high values indicate that the additive of EVA polymer
make binders stiffer, consequently, increase their resistance to
deformation.

tan() versus temperature
at 10 rads-1 for bitumen
modified by different
content of EVA polymer.
The phase angle isochrones clearly illustrate the improved elastic
response (reduced phase angles) of the modified bitumen. The phase
angles data of EVA polymer modified bitumens have lower values than
of base bitumen. The decrease in phase angle values obtained by
polymer modification is an indicator of increasing in binder elastic
properties and of reduction in binder permanent deformation occurred
as a result of applied stress.
Users recommendations
Planks of test must be made in areas highly stressed as ramps, bus
lanes.
