Nature
H.D. Carberry

We have neither Summer nor Winter
Neither Autumn nor Spring.
We have instead the days
When the gold sun shines on the lush green canefields
Magnificiently.
The days when the rain beats like bullets on the roofs
An there is no sound but the swish of water in the gullies
And trees struggling in the high Jamaica winds.
Also there are the days when leaves fade from off guango trees
And the reaped canefields lie bare and fallow to the sun.
But best of all there are the days when the mango and the logwood blossom
When the bushes are full of the sound of bees and the scent of honey.
When the tall grass sways and shivers to the slightest breath of air.
When the buttercups have paved the earth with yellow stars
And beauty comes suddenly and the rains have gone.

ARE YOU STILL PLAYING YOURFLUTE

ARE YOU STILL PLAYING YOUR FLUTE?

Are you still playing your flute?
When there is hardly time for our love
I am really guilty
To be longing for your song
The melody concealed in the slim hollow of the bamboo
Uncovered by the breath of an artist
Composed by his fingers
Blown by the wind
To the depth of my heart.

Are you still playing your flute?
In the village so quiet and deserted
Amidst the sick rice field
While here it has become a luxury
To spend time watching the rain
Gazing at the evening rays
Collecting dew drops
Or enjoying the fragrance of flowers.

Are you still playing your flute?
The more it disturbs my conscience
to be thinking of you
in the hazard of you
my younger brothers unemployed and desperate
my people disunited by politics
my friend slaughtered mercilessly
this world is too old and bleeding

is gone.Azreen repeatedly tells her father that she does indeed see someone and
that the figure is pointing at something. She goes on to tell that Awang, the village
bomoh has told her who the figure is and she had seen her before when Madhuri
and she were young.Azreen also mentions the woman appearing outside their
house crying the night after Madhuri was buried.
Azreen confronts her father, Saleh about Madhuri being her adopted
sister. There is silence between them. Her father then bends down behind the
woodpile. When he straightens up,there is a parang in his hand.It is the parang
that he uses to chop wood.Upon seeing the parang,Azreen tells her father that the
woman she saw earlier was pointing at that parang. Her father then flings the
parang on the soil near Azreens feet.
Azreen picks up the parang. She sees a stain of something white and
sticky at the edge of the blunt blade. It looks like tree sap.Azreen touches the stain
with her fingers.Suddenly, she understands the truth. She shakes her head in
disbelief.Puan Normalas words echoes in her mind.Azreen recalls her saying that
they were all cursed and that she saw Madhuris body as it was taken out from
the estate and that she had white blood.Azreen confronts her father. She says
that the parang is stained with latex. She gives an account of what could have
happened to Madhuri. She says that Madhuris clothes must have been stained
with rubber latex when she was killed at the plantation. She must have knocked
over the cup of latex. The white blood that she had was the white latex from the
rubber tree which had stained her clothes just as how it had stained the blade of
the parang.Azreen hands back the parang to her father and accuses him of killing
Madhuri.Saleh Abdullah recalls the incidents that lead to the murder of
Madhuri.Madhuri had just given his wife porridge and was returning home to her
husband. When she left,Saleh headed to the jungle with his parang to look for
wood.He was about to return home when he saw them.He first saw
Madhuri. She was with another man.He saw them embrace. Then he saw the man

Title : 1Murid 1Sukan 1Malaysia Walk
To : Principal
Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kurau Date: 15 July 2012

Recently my school had organized the 1Murid 1Sukan 1Malaysia Walk . I have made some
observations throughout the event and would like to report to you about it.

The momentous and colourful event was held on 10 July 2012. There were 1,350 excited
students who gathered in the school field to walk for 1.5 kilometres with their teachers, the
representatives from the Parent-Teacher Association as well as a personnel from the District
Education Office. The Walk began right after the District Education officer launched the event at 7.45
a.m.

The main objective of the Walk was to increase fitness among students. Many teenagers
nowadays are more interested to sit in front of their computers or be the potato couch instead of doing
any physical exercises. It is an unhealthy lifestyle as it leads to obesity. Thus, it is hoped that the
programme will initiate the students interests in doing exercises as part of daily routines.

Secondly, the event is aimed to instill unity among students. Every student from all walks of
life walked together, hand in hand, without any uneasy feelings towards each other. They really
enjoyed themselves and showed their espirit de corps while taking part in the activities regardless of
their different race.

Finally, this programme was intended to promote students to excel in sports. On the day, all
the students had a chance to try out the different types of sports such as badminton, fulsal and archery.
They were also exposed to other types of sports and the opportunity awaiting for them in the sports
field through the exhibition held.

Right after the students completed their walk, they gathered in the school field again for an
aerobic exercise. The school had invited an experienced instructor to lead the session. Again they had
a lot of fun following the steps and instructions as they were exercising.

The school also had invited a few sports agencies to do exhibition in the school hall. The
students had a chance to visit the kiosks and get important information about different types of sports
along the day. They learnt how to excel in sports and become as successful as Datuk Nicol David,
Safee Sali and Datuk Lim Chong Wei.

The archery clinic was the most famous activity of the day. The students were interested to
know more about archery. They were ecstatic to get their hands on the archery set and try to shoot
arrows on the target.

Another activity for the day was futsal competition. Each team consisted of students from
different forms and of multi racial. All teams had shown their talents and great effort in winning the
competition. Our coach, Mr Azhar, had also identified a few hidden talents for our school football
team.

The students also had shown their interest in badminton competition. The final game was
between Rahim Jailani from form 4 and Rushdan Ahmad from form 3. It was a fantastic game as both
of them were very good and skillful. The crowd cheered as Rahim Jailani finally won the game after a
hard and long game.

To conclude, event like 1Murid 1Sukan 1Malaysia Walk is very important to instill the love
for sports among the young generation. Therefore the Ministry of Education effort to have this event
organized annually is a smart move. Besides creating more skillful and professional sportsman, it
helps to impart a positive habit towards a healthier nation.

How To Lose Weight To Avoid Obesity
By : NurAlis Mohamed

Obesity has been on the rise among teenagers. This is a need to increase awareness
among students about the importance to be more health conscious. Being obese can lead to
several diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure which can harm us at a very young
age. There are many ways to maintain our ideal weight and stay healthy.

Firstly, improper eating habits cause one to be obese. This has to be avoided. Eating
too much fast foods or junks like potato chips, fried foods and crackers between meals is one
of the main reasons why teenagers are on weight nowadays. All the food contains extra
calories that are needed by the body and thus are stored as fat.

Secondly, we should eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. The vitamins and fiber they
contain are really good for our body and health. Also, remember to remove the skin and fats
from chickens or meats before you cook them. With this, it really helps us to reduce the fats
that are absorbed in our bodies. Next, we should try to tame ourselves with the steamed-cook
meals instead of those unhealthy junks. Sometimes, we do not realize that the amount of oil
which we consume can affect our health.

As we all know, avoiding from taking the oily food is quite impossible. It was proven
that these kinds of food do taste much better. But this does not mean that we can take oily
food at anytime we want. We just need to reduce the habits of taking this food by giving
ourselves a treat once a week with a piece of fried chicken. But, we have to take healthy food
for the rest of the week to ensure that we stay healthy.

Now, aside from avoiding fried foods, you are advised to avoid snacking on biscuits,
chocolates and ice-creams. Instead of munching on these when you are hungry, why not you
go and grab some fresh fruits or sticks of celery. In other words, you can kill two birds with
one stone. You will satisfy your hunger plus keep on staying healthy at the same time.

Then, this is another step to stay away from being obese. We are banned from
skipping our meals. We might think that we will lose more weight in that way. However, we
are wrong. Actually, it will only cause harm to our health. Therefore, the best step is to eat
regularly but moderately. If we used to eat two plates of rice for each meal, we have to
reduce it into one plate per meal.

In addition, lowering the intake of sugary food and drinks such as sweet cakes or
carbonated drinks can also help us to keep out from an unhealthy lifestyle.Thist also makes us
lose our weight.

Furthermore, we may get our ideal weight if we eat three times per day at fixed time.
Alternatively, instead on having meals three times a day, you can also have five times of
small meals per day so that we will not feel hungry or weak to do our daily routine.

Lets see another step that may help us with our obesity problem which is by
changing our lifestyle. As you can see, in most homes, there are maids who do the house
work. We tend to depend on them to settle every single chore. This has to be avoided
immediately. You know, it is not wrong to do the work like mopping or cleaning the kitchen
once in a while by ourselves or maybe we can join them to clean our house. We can take this
as a form of exercise.

Last but not the least, we must keep in mind that exercise is the key of succeeding our
determination on losing weight and avoid obesity for a healthier life. We should at least
exercise three times a week in order to burn extra fats which are stored in our body.
The easiest exercise we can do is brisk walking. Walking is simple, easy and need no money.
All we have to do is to take a slow jog around our neighborhood while inhaling the fresh
morning air. This is the best and relaxing way to maintain an ideal weight.

As a conclusion, it is easier for us to maintain our weight rather than to lose a few
kilogrammes. So, we better start taking our first step and practising living in a new healthy
life from now by controlling our diet.

How To Cope With Stress
Written By: Nurin Hannah Khalisah
Stress is a word closely associated with students like us who are studying for SPM
examination. Whether we like it or not, stress will occur especially when our family or
teachers pressure us to get flying colours in our results. Competition between friends to excel
and be the best also added in more tense to this problem. If there is no way of getting out
from stress, we should find way to cope with it.
First, we need to do regular exercise. By just sitting and studying for hours, it is
actually adding more pressure and causing stress. Drop everything and go outside for
walking or jogging and enjoy the nature that surely will do us good. Besides, having hobbies
can be a good way to release our tension. Hobbies such as drawing, fishing or photography
can help us to relax our tensed mind. To have a balance time between studying and relaxing,
we need a good time table. This may help us to organise our activities well. Instead
of studying alone, why not we try to work in group to share or combine our ideas and
knowledge. Different people have difference way of thinking. By working together we can
gain more knowledge, views and experiences. It is easier for us to discuss something that we
do not know and motivate each other.
Having a balanced diet is essential for our body to maintain good health and clear
mind. Our bodies need the right amount of nutrition to produce energy for us to focus on our
study .Lacking of these will make us easily tired and surely we are unable to concentrate in
class and not active in cocurriculum activities such as sport and any physical activities which
require us to be fit. Sleeping eight hours a day is a must. In other word, it is important for us
to have enough sleep. Do not cut our sleeping hours by studying late into the night and then
wake up early the next morning. Once we do not have enough sleep, it will definitely distract
our focus in our study. We tend to feel tired , sleepy and end up sleeping in class . We also
cannot concentrate and unable to excel teachers teaching. Worse, it is also affected our
mental and emotion.
Studying using a correct study skill will make us less stress. It is easier for to absorb
what we have learned and prepare well for the coming examination. Making short notes and
mind map can really help us in our study because our notes are more organise and easier to
understand. A check list of what are the thing we should do also help us to make sure all the
things we suppose to complete are done. Another way to cope with stress is seek advice if we
have any problem that piled up in our mind. It is important to share our problem with
somebody that we can trust. Lay everything on the table so that you will be less stress. Let
others who love us, elbow our burden and find the way out of the problem together. It is also
can avoid us from doing something which we are not supposed to do such as commit suicide.
Outdoor activities also can help to reduce our stress. It can help us to have an active
body, mind and free from stress. For loner who love to be alone, they can put on their running
shoes to pound on the track, running to playing squash or as simplest as brisk walking. Those
who prefer company , they can enjoy playing badminton , soccer or even go-cart. We also
should talk to our family or even teachers that they pushing us too much. Tell them that we
also need some space to breathe and relax rather than study all the time. Listen to the music
also can help us with our stress. By listening to or favourite music automatically it may calm
our mind because it has an energy flow which can drain out our tension and stress.
For teenagers like us, obviously we cannot run away from stress but we still be able to
manage it wisely by taking immediate and correct action. Dont let stress control your mind.
