Most of the residents in Brgy. Daang Hari, Navotas do not have their own bathroom,
and these residents lived near the sea. Theyll just throw their human wastes into the
sea including plastics, solid waste and other substances that will pollute the water body.
As Ive seen in the video, they dont have sufficient area to install septic tanks. Probably
the government should have the first move to tell the residents not just throw their waste
into the any water body because they will suffer in the future and strictly violated laws of
Clean Water Act and there is a penalty for this case.
The government should secure the area where the water system takes in, not just the
water pipes are place above the canals causing contamination. A proper drainage
system must be provided and help the residents to have their own bathroom.
Few of the prohibited acts under R.A. 9275 (Clean Water Act of the Philippines) has
been violated by the settlers:
Discharging or depositing any water pollutant to the water body, or such which
will impede natural flow in the water body
Unauthorized transport or dumping into waters of sewage sludge or solid waste.
Transport, dumping or discharge of prohibited chemicals, substances or
pollutants listed under Toxic Chemicals, Hazardous and Nuclear
Wastes Control Act (Republic.Act No. 6969).

I prefer to relocate the informal settlers near the river. As I remember, Marikina River
always has been a dangerous river when there is a strong typhoon and sometimes it
overflows. And I think it will overflow because of the water lilies spread throughout. The
government must quickly resolve this problem because of the water lilies the rivers
water level decreases and it needs to be dig and that will cost a lot of money.

There are treatment technologies to control or to manage the water hyacinth. Chemical
Control, the application of herbicides for controlling water hyacinth has been carried out
for many years and it has been found that there is a good success rate when dealing
with small infestations. A main concern when using herbicides is the environmental and
health related effects, especially where people collect water for drinking and washing.
Physical Control is performed by land based machines such as bucket cranes,
draglines, or boorm or by water based machinery such as aquatic weed harvester,
dredges, or vegetation shredders. Mechanical removal is seen as the best short-term
solution to the proliferation of the plant. It is however costly and requires the use of both
land and water vehicles
Biological Control, chemical and mechanical removal is often too expensive and
ineffective. Researchers have turned to biological control agents to deal with water
hyacinth. The effort began in the 1970s when USDA researchers released three species
of weevil known to feed on water hyacinth into the United States, Neochetina bruchi, N.
eichhorniae, and the water hyacinth borer Sameodes albiguttalis. Although meeting with
limited success, the weevils have since been released in more than 20 other countries.
However, the most effective control method remains the control of excessive nutrients
and prevention of the spread of this species.
