Diasec ® -Information

History
In 1972, Grieger was granted an exclusive license for Diasec ® processing from patent number 22 56 656
of Swiss company Diasec ® Sovilla S.A.
Because of its sophisticated effect, Diasec ® was initially used for the design of prominent administrative
buildings, meeting rooms and so on.

The good experience seen with the Diasec ® process in terms of resistance to light and mechanical
durability compared to unmounted or film-laminated photos resulted in a rise in photos or prints
produced using the Diasec ® process. From the mid-eighties onwards, notable photographic artists
started to use the Diasec ® face mounting process more and more for the presentation of their work.

To date, Grieger has produced more than half a million square metres of Diasec ® seals.

Process
Diasec ® is a mounting process which permanently joins together transparent acrylic glass or real glass
and prints so as to be free from streaks and bubbles. The standard plate thicknesses are 2mm, 3mm,
4mm or 5mm. We can produce any format up to a maximum size of 245 x 500cm. We only work with
high-quality acrylic glass with 90% UV absorption; upon request we can also provide an anti-scratch
coating, which almost achieves the surface hardness of a pane of glass.

To provide additional stability and to protect your print, we recommend mounting an aluminium
composite panel on the back. There are a range of framing systems available for the presentation of your
Diasec ® work.

Durability
To ensure a long product life, you should observe the paper manufacturer’s specifications regarding the
durability of their products. The Kodak brochure “ENDURA Papiere – Bestimmung der Bildhaltbarkeit”
(ENDURA papers – determining print life) is highly recommended and is available under the following link:
http://www.kodak.com/global/plugins/acrobat/de/professional/products/papers/enduraWhitePaper.pdf
This not only deals with resistance to light and colour fading, but also takes into account a number of
environmental influences, such as temperature, air humidity and atmospheric impurities. The durability
of a print depends not only on the light intensity, but on the sum of all harmful factors.
With our Diasec ® process, especially with an aluminium composite panel mounted on the back, the print
is protected against mechanical stress, the harmful influences listed above are reduced and
the product life extended.

Diasec ® Care Instructions
Transport and packaging
To protect when transporting over greater distances or when loading and unloading several times, we
recommend packing Diasec ® prints in suitable carrier boxes. We would be happy to produce a carrier
box to the correct dimensions for your Diasec ® product. Nevertheless, you should make sure that impacts,
vibrations and extreme differences in temperature and air moisture are avoided.

For short transit times, we have had good experience with using foamed bubble wrap. You should make
sure that the wrap is secured tightly so as to prevent it from moving.

To protect the edges and corners, we recommend using additional edge protection elements made of
plastic or foam.

Hanging
All Grieger bracket systems are designed in such a way that Diasec ® prints can be mounted on the inner
edge of the aluminium bracket on suitable wall hooks. The customer must ensure that fastenings,
screws or hooks can withstand the weight of the Diasec ® print. You can find suitable wall brackets in
our product range.

Cleaning
To avoid scratching the acrylic glass surface, do not clean with a dry cloth. Dirty surfaces can be cleaned
with water (with one drop of household washing-up liquid) and a soft, lint-free cloth (microfiber or
glasses cleaning cloths). We would be happy to supply you with a special cleaning set. Under no
circumstances should you use chemical substances such as solvents, household cleaning products,
spirits, alkaline solutions or acids.

Reducing scratches
To reduce or remove visible scratches on the surface, these can be polished away using a suitable polis-
hing agent for acrylic glass. If possible, polish a large area in order to prevent undesirable reflections or
sheen. Matted surfaces cannot be repaired. We introduced an anti-scratch acrylic glass into our product
range a few months ago. This surface is almost as resistant as real glass and therefore alleviates the
problem of scratches.

Environmental conditions
In addition to the long product life of photo papers, (see manufacturer instructions), the Diasec ® seal
also protects against environmental influences such as air pollution as well as against mechanical stress.
Direct sunlight should be avoided. Temperatures should not be below 15° or above 30°. The
recommended relative air humidity is between 45% and 50%.

Storage
Diasec ® products should be stored free from packaging materials in dark rooms and in a hanging
position. Here too you should ensure an optimum temperature and air humidity.

Frames
When framing Diasec ® products, note that acrylic glass shrinks/grows by up to 0.8mm per metre at
temperature changes of 10°. You should take appropriate tolerances into account when building a
frame.
