In the De Lavaud process the molten metal is gradually input into a steel mould rotating
at high speed. The process is characterised by its quick cooling that gives a finer
solidification matrix and a more homogeneous metallurgical structure.

Heat treatment
After being spun the PAM-GLOBAL

pipes
are placed and rotated in a heat treatment
furnace at 950C and then gradually cooled
again. This step is essential to the process
as it transforms the cast iron's metallurgical
structure. The reduction of iron carbides and
the increase of ferrite content considerably
improve the mechanical properties of cast
iron and reduce its surface hardness. The
graphite of the cast iron resulting from the
SAINT- GOBAIN PAM process forms
clustered graphite, halfway between lamellar
and ductile iron.

To provide clearer guidance on the
chemical resistance of S range in
domestic applications,
SAINT-GOBAIN PAM has carried out
20 additional tests to the EN 877
Standard requirements on detergent
products and special products of
common use. The tests were carried
out on samples, under the temperature
of use recommended by the
manufacturers and where it was
relevant, up to 70C since hot water
is normally supplied in dwellings around
50 - 60C. After stopping the test, the
pipes and fittings shall be washed
immediately to eliminate any stains and
the coatings shall be examined with
regard to blistering and rusting both
according to ISO 4628-2 and 3.
(Accepted levels according EN 877)
The duration of the test would potentially be equivalent to the extrapolation of a real chemical stress undergone during 7
or 10 years (a 10 to15 min stress per day). This test method however simulates a more severe stress since the samples lie
in direct contact with the solution, the temperature being maintained and the test includes no rinsing over its duration.
= Resistance
The coatings principle is to offer consistent performance for pipes, fittings and accessories without any weak
points. So that you can be sure of the products you specify and to fit important changes recently noticed on fluids
carried disinfectants, hygiene products - SAINT-GOBAIN PAM regularly makes assessments on coatings.
They are continuously upgraded to provide high protection level against corrosion, and long-lasting properties
to protect the pipe work lifespan.
The inner coating of the PAM-GLOBAL

S pipes has been designed to withstand most chemical stress and resist
abrasion. Made of an epoxy-resin regularly assessed, this coating benefits from continuous improvement to meet
waste water drainage increasing constraints. Its smooth surface enhances flow capacity and prevents incrustations
and deposits. The inner coatings of pipes and fittings have been paired for PAM-GLOBAL

S system consistency,
to withstand equivalent stress and to ensure no weak link could affect the pipe work durability.
The coatings performance of PAM-GLOBAL

S pipes and fittings exceeds by far EN 877 requirements.

Quality Certifications
12
ISO, International Standards
ISO 9001 certification is the recognition by a third party (accredited organization)
that the quality management system of the company fully complies with the standards
requirements.
It is recognized in more than 70 countries. It covers such company activities
as quality control, R&D, production technologies, company organization and customer
service.
ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System.
The certificate of compliance proves that the company has a global approach to minimize
the impact made to the environment throughout manufacturing process: Gwuidelines for
improvement, action plans and better follow-up procedures.
PAM-GLOBAL

cast iron elements are made from 95% of metal scrap and are 100% recyclable;
thus, the impact on environment is really minimized.
EN 877 Standard
The European standard EN 877 Cast iron pipes and fittings, their joints and accessories for
the evacuation of water from buildings , known to be the most demanding standard worldwide,
sets up technical specifications as well as test methods and quality control.
This leads to:
Mechanical performances
Respect of dimensions
Special requirements on couplings
Efficient traceability of production sites.
13
Quality marks are voluntary. Their scope is aiming at fitness for purpose and at valuing the
product in a customer-supplier relationship.
Unlike Quality Marks, CE marking is mandatory to be allowed pass into the European Union
and between member states.
Made compulsory by the European Directive for Construction product, its scope is limited to
health and operational safety. CE marking is a minimum precondition to guarantee that
construction products are not dangerous for the European consumers and users. It sets the
same safety criteria shared all over Europe and is mainly intended for the authorities in charge
of market control.
Reaction to fire alone was retained as safety criterion for drainage systems (see Fire protection
chapter).
Based on EN 877, CE marking became mandatory on cast iron drainage products leaving
the factory, from 2009 September the 1st.
For Construction Products, reaction to fire is assessed on the basis of standardised tests and
described in a EUROCLASS classification. For complete ranges pipes, fittings, couplings
and accessories SAINT-GOBAIN PAM has obtained the excellent EUROCLASS ranking:
A2, s1-d0, now mentioned on the products.
EUROCLASS being based on test methods and a classification harmonised throughout Europe,
the scoring can be used to compare materials and product performances you specify.
CE Marking
Compliance with standards
Voluntary Quality Mark GEG RAL-GZ 698
Being self declared, EN 877 is only proved when third party validated on all criteria and
periodically tested.
Recognised quality mark, GEG (Gtezeichen Entwasserungstechnik Guss) has set forth a
list of testing criteria and quality requirements far exceeding those included in EN 877.
Meeting all these requirements is the first and foremost condition to obtain a RAL-GEG
marking. Third-party inspections are carried out by MPA-NRW twice a year.

The most important
benefits of
PAM-GLOBAL

cast iron pipe

systems
Material Classification
PAM-GLOBAL

pipes and
fittings are made of cast iron
with lamellar graphite
according to DIN EN 1561.
This material conforms to the
Class A1 Building Material
according to DIN 4102 in
Germany and is non
combustible.
Fire Load
Cast iron pipes and fittings
are considered non
combustible.
Their fire loads do not need
to be taken into account.
The Fire load of a product
is defined as follows: it is the
quantity of energy released
during combustion. It highly
depends on the type and
quantity of flammable
materials used for the product
manufacturing.
Formerly, a fire load of 7
KWh/m was authorised in
emergency corridors.
This regulation is no longer
applicable due to the general
Pipe Systems Guidelines,
whereby fire loads are no
more permitted on
emergency corridors or
emergency exits.
Comparison: 1 kg of
polyethylene (PE) produces
a fire load of 12 KWh. 1 kg
of heating oil has a gross
calorific value of 11.7 KWh.*
Smoke Development
In the event of a fire, the
PAM-GLOBAL

pipe system
remains sealed; smoke that
could develop inside the
pipes is dissipated via the
rooftop main ventilation.
Comparison: 10 kg of
polyethylene (PE) or
polypropylene (PP) produces
approximately 23,000 m
3
of
highly toxic smoke,
consisting of carbon
monoxide, carbon dioxide
and soot.*
Thermal Expansion
The thermal expansion
coefficient of cast iron is only
0.0105 mm/m.K.
Under a temperature change
of 50 K, the expansion of a
DN 100 pipe of 10 m length
is only 5.3 mm. This
expansion is absorbed by
the couplings.

Fire Protection
For fire safety in a building, the major responsibility
rests with the project manager who must respect
the regulation in force. In buildings at risk, such
as multi-storey buildings, materials with reduced
flammability should be selected to apply
precautionary principle.
Reaction to fire is the instant behaviour when a
fire breaks out, its propensity to ignite or feed a
fire. For drainage systems to obtain CE marking,
Reaction to fire requires a mandatory certificate,
stipulating their EUROCLASS classification, issued
by an accredited and independent laboratory.
Cast iron as a material itself is classified as A1
in the Euroclass classification for reaction to fire.
In tests carried out by the CSTB accredited
laboratory, SAINT-GOBAIN PAM cast iron ranges
(pipes, fittings and accessories including elastomer
gaskets and coatings) received the following
excellent Euroclass ranking: A2 -s1, d0.
For smoke emission and the production of flaming
droplets, the SAINT-GOBAIN PAM products
respectively achieved the highest possible rating:
s1 and d0.
So, cast iron remains one of the safest drainage
material for fire safety.
Fire resistance is a construction component's
ability to withstand fire for a given period of time
and to retain its serviceability in the event of fire.
SAINT-GOBAIN PAM cast iron has a melting point
over 1000C. In most cases it requires no
additional fire protection. SAINT-GOBAIN PAM
has carried out a non exhaustive series of tests
on its cast iron pipe systems in order to make
precise recommendations for fire resistance
requirements up to 240 minutes (4 hours).
SAINT-GOBAIN PAM cast iron pipes are
non combustible, they do not feed the fire, nor
give off either gases or smokes liable to delay fire
fighters or damage other equipment.

Acoustic Dampener
The acoustic dampener is designed to reduce structure-borne
noise propagating through connections between the pipe system
and the building. This accessory, made of a stainless steel casing
surrounding an elastomer shock absorber, is fitted between the
back of the bracket and the structure (wall, ceiling, etc...). It can
be used on any cast iron pipe bracket from DN 50 to DN 150,
installed horizontally or vertically. With PAM-GLOBAL

dampener,
such low values as 5 dB(A) in a 2 l/s flow rate can be achieved
independent of how tight the bracket is screwed.

Waste water and rainwater drainage generates airborne and structure-
borne noise between rooms, which usually result from a mixed flow, when
the pipe is filled with water and air.
Under such circumstances a pipe will radiate noise outwards to any
lightweight ceilings, cupboards and similar areas wherever it makes contact.
What Exactly is Plumbing Noise?
Airborne noise (A)
When a material is dense and thick, the
pipe walls prevent air transmission;
as is the case with cast iron which offers
intrinsic acoustic properties.
Structure-borne noise (B)
When the noise produced within a pipe
is not transmitted by the air, the
residual noise is transmitted by
structural vibrations. Whilst the
mass of the cast iron limits the
vibratory level, the junctions and
fixing to the building will propagate
noise. Objective: Dampen the
vibrations at the connections with
the solid structure.

Requirements defined
by DIN 4109 and VDI
Drainage installations must
be designed in accordance
with DIN 4109/A1. This
standard defines the
expected requirements for
noise control with the aim of
protecting people in
residential rooms from
unreasonable nuisance
caused by sound
transmission.
DIN 4109-1989 specifies
the expected requirements
regarding the maximum
noise level for
rooms requiring noise
insulation. These include
living rooms, bedrooms,
workrooms and classrooms.
Such requirements do not
apply to room partitions
within the same dwelling.
As a result of its endorsement
by the building authorities
DIN 4109/A1 is now made
compulsory under public law.
However, it only sets a
minimum requirement.
The VDI Guidelines 4100
define 3 sound insulation
levels (SSt).
These 3 levels can cover all
sound insulation requirements
and they are to be promoted
between all actors involved
in building projects including
further occupants on the basis
of private law.
To avoid subsequent disputes
it is highly recommended that
the sound insulation level
requirements (SSt) should be
stipulated in the contracts.

S Stench Trap
Cleaning access on the bottom from
DN 50 to 150.
PAM-GLOBAL

S branch
traps are preferably used
on rainwater systems.
Branch traps must be
installed vertically to keep
the adequate depth of
water seal but are suitable
for horizontal and/or
vertical pipework route.
They can be installed on
vertical pipe works if
combined with bends.
Arrows stamped on the
body indicate flow
direction.

The PAM-GLOBAL

RAPID NG
coupling, single bolt, allows fast and
reliable installation. SAINT-GOBAIN
PAMs new design ensures optimized
water-tightness and pressure
resistance and better than ever
corrosion resistance.
A wide stainless steel collar allows
tolerance during installation.
Its profile, with edges directed
towards the pipe, encases the
elastomer gasket and prevents any
risk of it being expelled during
tightening. In case of fire, the rubber
gasket is not exposed to flames.
When fully tightened, the coupling
ensures a built-in electrical continuity,
without any added clip.

DN 250 and DN 300 on request. Recommended for pipe systems exposed to climatic
stresses, i.e rainwater spigot systems, drainage systems for bridges, or open multi-storey
car parks.
The PAM Rapid NG is designed
for a full tightening null gap,
there is no need for checking
the torque.
Specific offer for a complete Nitrile coupling.
For waste water liable to contain hot oil, solvents or hydrocarbons, it is recommended
to use couplings equipped with specific NBR gaskets.
From now on, to meet these special requirements the PAM Rapid NG all stainless
steel W5 coupling alone will be delivered with NBR gasket.
Please ask the complete product codes for couplings with NBR gasket.

PAM-GLOBAL

pipes up to DN
300 are generally supplied in
3 m length which can be cut to
length.
Where the pipes are cut on
site, they should be cut clean
and square and burrs removed.
Cut ends should be re-coated
with the EXTREM 1 one
component touch-up paint.
Installation Instructions
For PAM-GLOBAL

RAPID Coupling
1. Push the supplied
assembled coupling onto the
pipe spigot up to the middle
spacing ring of the seal.
2. Push the next pipe spigot
into the other end of the
coupling.
3. Tighten the screw to null
gap position, completely
closed, with a ratchet spanner
or an electric screwdriver
PAM-GLOBAL

pipes can be readily cut by the use of a powered disc-cutter, or with wheel cutter.
Ensure correct grade of disc appropriate to cast iron are used, and that cutting wheels or saw blades are changed on
a regular basis. Angle grinders are not advisable for cast iron, but should they be used, make sure a secure hold of
the pipe is made. Warning: Chain cutters or snap cutters should not be used to serve the purpose
Cutting Techniques
The pipe cutter from Ridgid or Rothenberger (see above) ensure fast, neat and square cutting.
Reciprocating saw can be used but is not so well adapted.

Application Guide
Suspended pipe works shall
be secured with fix points
every 10 or 15 meters so
to prevent disconnection.
On vertical runs, waste
water or rainwater
downpipes, the bracketing
aims at preventing the
pipework to fall over due
to its own load.
The downpipes shall
likewise be secured by two
brackets spaced no more
than 2 m, including one in
the immediate vicinity of a
branch.
To address both pipe load
and end thrust force, a
stack installed through open
hoppers must be secured
with fix points-like stack
supports-to prevent the pipe
works from falling over.
For buildings up to 5
storeys and a pipe diameter
DN 100, we recommend
to position the first stack
support pipe at the base of
the first floor, and then
every subsequent fifth floor,
in case of a standard
average 2.5 m between
floors, or more generally
every 15 m. The pipe work
illustrated here indicates
the basic support and
bracketing rules.

PAM-GLOBAL

Bracketing
recommendations for
cast iron pipe works.
Pipework stability
A pipework is submitted to
different forces liable to
affect its stability; for cast
iron, the bracketing system
is designed to carry only
the weight of the pipe and
its content (see table 1 on
page 19).
The bracketing rules aim at
keeping the pipeworks
stable, based on the pipe
loads. Pipe supports and
fixings shall be adapted
accordingly .
Basic rules: The pipes
brackets should be
regularly spaced and the
distance between two
brackets should generally
not exceed 2m.
The pipes of 2 or 3 m
length should be supported
with two brackets. Shorter
pipe lengths should be fixed
with one or two brackets,
depending on the diameter
(or pipe load).
The brackets should be
uniformly spaced in relation
to the junctions between
two elements. The distance
on either side of a coupling
should not be longer than
0.75 m.
Horizontal runs must be
adequately secured at
changes of direction and
wherever a fitting is
installed.

Syphonic Roof Drainage System

PAM-GLOBAL

EPAMS

Syphonic Roof Drainage System

The EPAMS

high-capacity
syphonic roof drainage system
was developed approximately 35
years ago in Scandinavia. It is
mainly used for draining roofs
with large surface areas, such as
factories, storage facilities,
shopping centres, as well as
buildings used for sports, leisure,
transportation and administration.
The EPAMS

system is a
technically mature development
in roof drainage. It complies with
the DIN 1986-100 (version: May
2008). Meanwhile, pressure-flow
roof syphonic systems, laid within
the PAM-GLOBAL

S pipe system,
are being used by thousands in
Germany.
The EPAMS

roof drainage system

has been taken into account by
Part 1 since 1988 and Part 2
since 1995. In traditional
rainwater drainage systems, after
the rain falls to the roof, it flows
to the roof outlet or gutter via
partially-filled drainage pipes.
Inside buildings, the maximum fill
factor in rain water pipes is 0.7
(h/d = 0.7) according to EN
12056. This fill factor means that
traditional rainwater drainage
systems must have adequate pipe
ventilation.
Traditional flat roof outlets form
water eddies and cones of air.
The undesired air infeed is affected
by the Coriolis force (eddy
forming) and also depends on the
atmospheric pressure, gravity and
the Earth's rotation.
The air in the middle of the outlet
is sucked in through the eddies.
This lowers the outlet's capacity
level.
In contrast to open channel
drainage (according to EN
12056), pressure-flow roof
drainage pipes systematically
operate at the designed rain yield
factor. When the pipe system has
reached maximum capacity, the
geodetic height difference between
the roof outlet and the transition
pipe is used in open channel
drainage in order to overcome
flow loss. This is why smaller
dimensions are required than in
open channel drainage systems.
The pipes can be laid without
gradients under the roof
construction due to the typical
operating conditions of these
systems.
There is no need for a wide-spread
branched pipe network. As a rule,
our EPAMS

high capacity roof

drainage system, with all of its
benefits and advantages, offers
extremely economical solutions.
However, the pipes can only reach
maximum capacity using specially
designed roof or channel outlets,
which prevent air infeed into the
pipe when the calculated volume
of rainwater has been reached.
With the EPAMS

system the air

is prevented from flowing (air cone
buildup) into the pipes when the
calculated rain volume has been
reached.
The applicable regulation for the
calculation of pipe sections for
rainwater drainage is EN 12056.
However, the syphonic drainage
system as a possibility for roof
drainage is merely mentioned
here. Further details on the design
and construction of such drainage
systems are not provided. This is
why the DIN 1986-100 has
universal validity. This directive
sets out guidelines for planning,
calculation and construction, while
the corresponding system
components of individual
manufacturers have fundamental
distinctions with regards to
assembly and mounting directives.
