A reinforced concrete slab foundation for a large warehouse is placed on the ground surface of a
deposit of firm clay, which is underlain by a dense incompressible gravel. The slab is 20 m x 20 m in
plan and has a uniform stress of 45 kPa applied on it. The clay layer is 10 m thick. Assuming the
foundation to be flexible, estimate the elastic (immediate) settlement of the slab at the centre using
Steinbrenner method (equations and graphs are given at the end of questions). Assume, Poissons
ratio () for clay is 0.45 and the elastic modulus (E) is 12MPa.
