Your Guide to Money Matters

For a common person, money simply means currency and coins. This is so
because in India, the payment system, which includes credit cards and
electronic cash, still revolves mainly around currency and coins, especially for
retail transactions. Here is an attempt to answer some of the Frequently
s!ed "uestions on Indian #urrency.

I. #oins
#oins in India are presently bein' issued in denominations of () paise, one
rupee, two rupees, *ve rupees and ten rupees. #oins up to () paise are
called +small coins+ and coins of ,upee one and above are called +,upee
#oins+. #oins in the denomination of - paise, . paise, / paise, ( paise, -)
paise, .) paise and .( paise have been withdrawn from circulation with e0ect
from 1une /), .)-- and are, therefore, no more le'al tender.
II. #urrency2
&an!notes in India are currently bein' issued in the denomination of 3 -), 3
.), 3(), 3 -)) 3 ()), and 3-))). These notes are called ban!notes as they
are issued by the ,eserve &an! of India 4,eserve &an!$. The printin' of notes
in the denominations of 3 -, 3 . and 3 ( has been discontinued as these
denominations have been coinised. However, such ban!notes issued earlier
can still be found in circulation and these ban!notes continue to be le'al
tender.
5hat is the Indian currency called6
The Indian currency is called the Indian ,upee 4I7,$ and the coins are called
paise. 8ne ,upee consists of -)) paise. The symbol of the Indian ,upee is 3.
The desi'n resembles both the 9evana'ari letter :3: 4ra$ and the ;atin capital
letter :,:, with a double hori<ontal line at the top.

7ot necessarily. The ,eserve &an! can also issue ban!notes in the
denominations of *ve thousand rupees and ten thousand rupees, or any
other denomination that the #entral Government may specify. However, there
cannot be ban!notes in denominations hi'her than ten thousand rupees in
terms of the current provisions of the ,eserve &an! of India ct, -=/>. #oins
can be issued up to the denomination of ,s.-))) in terms of The #oina'e ct,
.)--.
9emoneti<ation of hi'her denomination ban!notes.
3 -))) and 3 -)))) ban!notes, which were then in circulation were
demoneti<ed in 1anuary -=>?, primarily to curb unaccounted money. The
hi'her denomination ban!notes in 3 -))), 3 ())) and 3 -)))) were
reintroduced in the year -=(>, and these ban!notes 43 -))), 3 ())) and 3
-))))$ were a'ain demoneti<ed in 1anuary -=@A.
5hat is le'al tender6
The coins issued under the authority of %ection ? of The #oina'e ct, .)--,
shall be le'al tender in payment or on account i.e. provided that a coin has
not been defaced and has not lost wei'ht so as to be less than such wei'ht
as may be prescribed in its
case2 B 4a$ coin of any denomination not lower than one rupee shall be le'al
tender for any sum, 4b$ half rupee coin shall be le'al tender for any sum not
eCceedin' ten rupees,
Dvery ban!note issued by ,eserve &an! of India 43 ., 3 (, 3 -), 3 .), 3 (), 3
-)), 3 ()) and 3 -)))$ shall be le'al tender at any place in India in payment
or on account for the amount eCpressed therein, and shall be 'uaranteed by

5hat is the meanin' of :I promise to pay: clause6
s per %ection .? of ,eserve &an! of India ct, -=/>, the &an! is liable to pay
the value of ban!note. This is payable on demand by ,&I, bein' the issuer.
The &an!+s obli'ation to pay the value of ban!note does not arise out of a
contract but out of statutory provisions.
The promissory clause printed on the ban!notes i.e., :I promise to pay the
bearer the sum of ,upees Fis a statement which means that the ban!note is
a le'al tender for the speci*ed amount. The obli'ation on the part of the
&an! is to eCchan'e a ban!note with ban! notes of lower value or other coins
which are le'al tender under the Indian #oina'e ct, .)--, of an equivalent
amount.
5hy is 8ne ,upee liability of the Government of India6
The 8ne ,upee notes issued under the #urrency 8rdinance, -=>) are also
le'al tender and included in the eCpression ,upee coin for all the purposes of
the ,eserve &an! of India ct, -=/>. %ince the rupee coins issued by
Government constitute the liabilities of the Government, one rupee is also
liability of the Government of India.
&$ #urrency Mana'ement.
5hat is the role of the ,eserve &an! of India in currency mana'ement6
The ,eserve &an! derives its role in currency mana'ement from the ,eserve
&an! of India ct, -=/>.The ,eserve &an! mana'es currency in India. The
Government, on the advice of the ,eserve &an!, decides on various
denominations of ban!notes to be issued. The ,eserve &an! also coBordinates
with the Government in the desi'nin' of ban!notes, includin' the security
features. The ,eserve &an! estimates the quantity of ban!notes that are
li!ely to be needed denominationBwise and accordin'ly, places indent with
the various printin' presses. The aim of the ,eserve &an! is to provide 'ood
quality notes to members of public. Towards this aim, the ban!notes received
bac! from circulation are eCamined and those *t for circulation are reissued
and the others 4soiled and mutilated$ are destroyed so as to maintain the
quality of ban!notes in circulation.
5hat is the role of Government of India6
In terms of %ection .( of ,&I ct, -=/> the desi'n of ban!notes is required to
be approved by the #entral Government on the recommendations of the
#entral &oard of the ,eserve &an! of India. The responsibility for coina'e
vests with the Government of India on the basis of the #oina'e ct, .)-- as
amended from time to time. The Government of India is also responsible for
the desi'nin' and mintin' of coins in various denominations.
5ho decides on the *'ure to be printed on a new note6
The Government of India in consultation with the ,eserve &an! of India
decided on the desi'n of ban!notes.
5hat happens to the old desi'n notes when a new desi'n is introduced6
&oth old and new desi'n notes usually circulate to'ether for a while. The old
desi'n notes are then 'radually withdrawn from circulation when they
become un*t to be reBissued.

7o. The ,eserve &an! of India does not withdraw the le'al tender character
of notes issued in the past. ll ,&I notes retain their face value till any
speci*c communication from ,&I to the contrary. These notes can be

The hi'hest denomination note ever printed by the ,eserve &an! of India was

5hat is the role of ,&I in issue of coins6
The role of ,&I is limited to distribution of coins that are supplied by
Government of India. The responsibility for coina'e vests with the
Government of India on the basis of the #oina'e ct, .)--, as amended from
time to time.

and value of ban!notes to be printed each year to the Government of India
which 'et *nali<ed after mutual consultation. The quantum of ban!notes to
be printed, broadly depends on the requirement for meetin' the demand for
ban!notes, G9G 'rowth, replacement of soiled ban!notes, reserve stoc!
requirements, etc.
5ho decides on the quantity of coins to be minted6
The Government of India decides on the quantity of coins to be minted on the
basis of indents received from the ,eserve &an!.
How does the ,eserve &an! estimate the demand for ban!notes6
The ,eserve &an! estimates the demand for ban!notes on the basis of the
'rowth rate of the economy, inHation rate, the replacement demand and
reserve stoc! requirements by usin' statistical modelsItechniques.
5here are notes and coins produced6
7otes are printed at four printin' presses located at 7ashi!, 9ewas, Mysore
and %alboni. #oins are minted at the four mints at Mumbai, 7oida, Jol!ata
and Hyderabad.
How does the ,eserve &an! reach the currency to people6
The ,eserve &an! presently mana'es the currency operations throu'h its -=
Issue oKces located at hmedabad, &an'alore, &elapur, &hopal,
&hubaneswar, #handi'arh, #hennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, 1aipur, 1ammu,
Janpur, Jol!ata, ;uc!now, Mumbai, 7a'pur, 7ew 9elhi, Gatna,
Thiruvananthapuram, a currency chest at Jochi and a wide net wor! of
currency chests. These oKces receive fresh ban!notes from the ban!note
printin' presses. The Issue 8Kces of ,&I send fresh ban!note remittances to
the desi'nated branches of commercial ban!s.
The ,eserve &an! oKces located at Hyderabad, Jol!ata, Mumbai and 7ew
9elhi 4Mint lin!ed 8Kces$ initially receive the coins from the mints. These
oKces then send them to the other oKces of the ,eserve &an! who in turn
send the same to currency chests and small coin depots. The ban!notes and
rupee coins are stoc!ed at the currency chests and small coins at the small
coin depots. The ban! branches receive the ban!notes and coins from the
#urrency #hests and %mall #oin 9epots for further distribution amon' the
public.
5hat is a currency chest6
To facilitate the distribution of ban!notes and rupee coins, the ,eserve &an!
has authorised select branches of scheduled ban!s to establish currency
chests. These are actually storehouses where ban!notes and rupee coins are
stoc!ed on behalf of the ,eserve &an!. s on 9ecember /-, .)-/, there were
>.)= currency chests. The currency chest branches are eCpected to distribute
ban!notes and rupee coins to other ban! branches in their area of operation.
5hat is a small coin depot6
%ome ban! branches are authorised to establish %mall #oin 9epots to stoc!
small coins i.e. coins below ,upee one. The %mall #oin 9epots also distribute
small coins to other ban! branches in their area of operation. s on
9ecember /-, .)-/, there were /=?? small coin depots.
5hat happens when the ban!notes and coins return from circulation6
&an!notes returned from circulation are deposited at the Issue oKces of the
,eserve &an!. The ,eserve &an! subEects these to processin', authenticates
ban!notes for their 'enuineness, se're'ates them into notes *t for reissue
and those which are un*t, for cancellation. The ban!notes which are *t for
reissue are sent bac! in circulation and those which are un*t for reissue are
destroyed by way of shreddin' after completion of eCamination process.
#oins do not come bac! from circulation, eCcept those which are withdrawn.
From where can the 'eneral public obtain ban!notes and coins6
Gresently, ban!notes and coins can be obtained in eCchan'e at ,&I oKces
and all branches of ban!s. This function is bein' dele'ated by ,&I to
commercial ban!s.
#$ %oiled and Mutilated &an!notes
5hat are soiled, mutilated and imperfect ban!notes6
4i$ :soiled note2: means a note which, has become dirty due to usa'e and
also includes a two piece note pasted to'ether wherein both the pieces
presented belon' to the same note, and form the entire note.
4ii$ Mutilated ban!note is a ban!note, of which a portion is missin' or which is
composed of more than two pieces.
4iii$ Imperfect ban!note means any ban!note, which is wholly or partially,
obliterated, shrun!, washed, altered or indecipherable but does not include a
mutilated ban!note.

9$ &an!notes since Independence.
i. sho!a Gillar &an!notes2
The *rst ban!note issued by independent India was the one rupee note
issued in -=>=. 5hile retainin' the same desi'ns the new ban!notes were
issued with the symbol of ;ion #apital of sho!a Gillar at %arnath in the
watermar! window in place of the portrait of Jin' Geor'e.
The name of the issuer, the denomination and the 'uarantee clause were
printed in Hindi on the new ban!notes from the year -=(-. The ban!notes in
the denomination of 3-))), 3())) and 3-)))) were issued in the year -=(>.
&an!notes in sho!a Gillar watermar! %eries, in 3-) denomination were
issued between -=?@ and -==., 3 .) denomination in -=@. and -=@(, 3 () in
-=@( and -=A-, and 3-)) between -=?@B-=@=. The ban!notes issued durin'
the above period, contained the symbols representin' science and
technolo'y, pro'ress, orientation to Indian rt forms. In the year -=A), the
le'end :%atyameva 1ayate:, i.e., truth alone shall prevail was incorporated
under the national emblem for the *rst time. In 8ctober -=A@, 3()),
ban!note was introduced in 8ctober -=A@ with the portrait of Mahatma
Gandhi and the sho!a Gillar watermar!.
ii. Mahatma Gandhi 4MG$ %eries -==?
The ban!notes in MG %eries M -==? were issued in the denominations of 3 (,
4introduced in 7ovember .))-$ 3 -) 41une -==?$, 3 .) 4u'ust .))-$, 3 ()
4March -==@$, 3-)) 41une -==?$, 3 ()) 48ctober -==@$ and 3-))) 47ovember
.)))$. ll the ban!notes of this series bear the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi
on the obverse 4front$ side, in place of symbol of ;ion #apital of sho!a Gillar,
which has also been retained and shifted to the left side neCt to the
watermar! window. This means that these ban!notes contain Mahatma
Gandhi watermar! as well as Mahatma Gandhi+s portrait.
iii MG series M .))( ban!notes
MG series .))( ban!notes are issued in the denomination of 3-), 3.), 3(),
3-)), 3()) and 3-))) and contain some additional I new security features as
compared to the -==? MG series. The 3() and 3-)) ban!notes were issued in
u'ust .))(, followed by 3()) and 3-))) denominations in 8ctober .))(
and 3-) and 3.) in pril .))? and u'ust .))?, respectively.
The security features in MG %eries .))( ban!notes are as under2
%ecurity Thread2 The silver coloured machineBreadable security threadin 3
-), 3 .) and 3 () denomination ban!notes is windowed on front side and fully
embedded on reverse side. The thread Huoresces in yellow on both sides
under ultraviolet li'ht. The thread appears as a continuous line from behind
when held up a'ainst li'ht. 3-)), 3()) and 3-))) denomination ban!notes
have machineBreadable windowed security thread with colour shift from
'reen to blue when viewed from di0erent an'les. It Huoresces in yellow on
the reverse and the teCt will Huoresce on the obverse under ultraviolet li'ht.
8ther than on 3-))) ban!notes, the security thread contains the words
+&harat+ in the 9evana'ari script and +,&I+ appearin' alternately. The security
thread of the 3 -))) ban!note contains the inscription +&harat+ in the
9evana'ari script, +-)))+ and +,&I+.
Inta'lio Grintin'2 The portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, ,eserve &an! seal,
Guarantee and promise clause, sho!a Gillar emblem, ,&INs Governor+s
si'nature and the identi*cation mar! for the visually impaired persons are
printed in improved inta'lio.
%ee throu'h re'ister2 8n the left side of the note neCt to the watermar!
window, half the numeral of each denomination 4-), .), (), -)), ()) and
-)))$ is printed on the obverse 4front$ and half on the reverse. The accurate
bac! to bac! re'istration ma!es the numeral appear as one when viewed
a'ainst li'ht.
5ater Mar! and electrotype watermar!2 The ban!notes contain the portrait
of Mahatma Gandhi in the watermar! window with a li'ht and shade e0ect
and multiBdirectional lines. n electrotype mar! showin' the denominational
numeral -), .), (), -)), ()) and -))) respectively in each denomination
ban!note also appear in the watermar! widow and these can be viewed
better when the ban!note is held a'ainst li'ht.
8ptically Oariable In! 48OI$2 The numeral ()) P -))) on the 3 ()) and 3
-))) ban!notes are printed in 8ptically Oariable In! vi<., a colourBshiftin' in!.
The colour of these numerals appears 'reen when the ban!notes are held Hat
but would chan'e to blue when the ban!notes are held at an an'le.
Fluorescence2 The number panels of the ban!notes are printed in
Huorescent in!. The ban!notes also have dual coloured optical *bres. &oth
can be seen when the ban!notes are eCposed to ultraBviolet lamp.
;atent Ima'e2 In the ban!notes of 3 .) and above, the vertical band neCt
to the 4ri'ht side$ Mahatma GandhiNs portrait contains a latent ima'e,
showin' the denominational value .), (), -)), ()) or -))) as the case may
be. The value can be seen only when the ban!note is held hori<ontally and
li'ht allowed to fall on it at >(QR otherwise this feature appears only as a
vertical band.
Micro letterin's2 This feature appears between the vertical band and
Mahatma Gandhi portrait. It contains the word S,&IN in 3 -). 7otes of 3 .) and
above also contain the denominational value of the ban!notes. This feature
can be seen better under a ma'nifyin' 'lass.
How can one distin'uish the MG seriesB.))( ban!notes6
In addition to the security features listed above, the MG series B.))(
ban!notes have the year of printin' on the reverse of the ban!notes which is
not present in the preB.))( series.
5hat is the need for printin' di0erent series of ban!notes6
#entral ban!s the world over chan'e the desi'n of their ban!notes and
introduce new security features primarily to ma!e counterfeitin' diKcult and
to stay ahead of counterfeiters. India also follows the same policy.
D$ #urrent Issues
5hy are 3 -, 3 ., 3 ( ban!notes not bein' printed6
Dven thou'h volumeBwise, the share of such small denomination ban!notes in
the total ban!notes in circulation was hi'h, in value terms they constituted a
very small percenta'e with avera'e life of less than one year. The cost of
printin' and servicin' these ban!notes bein' not commensurate with their
life, printin' of these ban!notes was discontinued and these denominations
were coinised. However, 3 ( ban!notes were reBintroduced in .))- to brid'e
the 'ap between demand and supply of coins in this denomination. The
printin' of 3 ( ban!notes has been discontinued from the year .))(.
Has ,eserve &an! of India considered producin' a plastic ban!note6
The ,eserve &an!, in consultation with Government of India, has decided to
introduce one billion pieces of 3 -) ban!notes on plastic substrate on trial
basis.
5hat is a :star series: ban!note6
Fresh ban!notes issued by ,eserve &an! of India till u'ust .))? were
serially numbered. Dach of these ban!note bears a distinctive serial number
alon' with a pre*C consistin' of numerals and letterIs. The ban!notes are
issued in pac!ets containin' -)) pieces.
The &an! has also adopted the :%T, series: numberin' system for
replacement of defectively printed ban!notes. The %tar series ban!notes are
eCactly similar to the eCistin' Mahatma Gandhi %eries ban!notes, but have
an additional character vi<., a T4star$ in the number panel in the space
between the pre*C and the number as indicated below2

5hat is nonBsequential numberin'6
5ith a view to enhancin' operational eKciency and cost e0ectiveness in
ban!note printin', nonBsequential numberin' was introduced in .)--
consistent with international best practices. Gac!ets of ban!notes in nonB
sequential number will have -)) notes which are not sequentially numbered.
5hat is on a ban!note to help visually challen'ed people identify the
di0erent denominations6
Dach denomination is a di0erent si<eR the 'reater the value the lar'er the
note. %o a 3-))) note is lar'er than a 3-) note and so on. There is an
identi*cation mar! on the left hand side of each note on the front side which
is in raised print 4inta'lio$ and has di0erent shapes for di0erent
denominations for e'. 9iamond for 3-))), circle for 3 ()), trian'le for 3-)),
square for 3(), rectan'le for 3.) and none for 3-). Further, the denomination
numerals are prominently displayed in the central area of the notes in raised
print.
F$ #ounterfeits I For'eries
5hat is a for'ed note6
suspected for'ed note, counterfeit note or fa!e note is any note which does
not possess the characteristics of 'enuine Indian currency notes.
How to chec! whether a note is 'enuine or not6
for'ed note can be identi*ed on the basis of the features which are present
in a 'enuine Indian currency note. These features are easily identi*able by
seein', touchin' and tiltin' the note. It is advisable not to rely on Eust one
security feature as no counterfeit note can normally be eCpected to

#ounterfeitin' ban!notes I usin' as 'enuine, for'ed or counterfeit
ban!notes I possession of for'ed or counterfeit ban!note I ma!in' or
possessin' instruments or materials for for'in' or counterfeitin' ban!notes
ma!in' or usin' documents resemblin' ban!notes are o0ences under
%ections >A= to >A=D of the Indian Genal #ode and are punishable in the
#ourts of ;aw by *ne or imprisonment ran'in' from seven years to life

9oes possession of a for'ed note attract the punishment of *ne or
imprisonment6
Mere possession of a for'ed note does not attract punishment. Gossession of
a for'ed note !nowin' to be such and intendin' to use the same as 'enuine
or that it may be used as 'enuine, is punishable under %ection >A=# of Indian
