Glide into history

THE AUSTRALIAN Gliding Museum at Bacchus

Marsh is a time capsule preserving gliders dating back
to the 1930s.
The museum president, David Goldsmith, said the
museum was started by four long-time glider pilots in
1999 and was shifted from Ferntree Gully to Bacchus
Marsh about six years ago.
The Parwan-based museum now boasts 50 gliders
including a 1950s Slingsby T-31b made out of fabric
and wood and a replica 1891 Lilienthal, plus a gliding
simulator and aircraft escape training simulator. The

museum was mostly built from donations with some

grant money, and the enormous hangar was donated
by long-time glider pilot Bruce Brockhoff.
When fibreglass gliders came out in the 1970s, their
performance was so far ahead of the old gliders that the
old ones were either put in hangars or being disposed
of. The museum started because Australias heritage
was being lost, Mr Goldsmith said.
Silent flight is an art and a science. Gliders handle
really well and are very manoeuvrable. When thermals
are there you can stay away all day, but the average

flight here is an hour long.

Mr Goldsmith, a former commercial jumbo jet pilot,
said gliders could average more than 100km/hour on
cross-country flights of up to 1000km and some of the
top glider pilots had exceeded 1000km.
The Australian Gliding Museum currently has 170
members aged 15-years-old and upwards. People can
begin lessons at 14-years-old and fly solo when they
turn 15-years-old.

Youth give
councillors a spray!
Members of Moorabools
Youth Action Group and
FreeZa group turned a day
out paintballing into a little
more fun recently, by inviting two councillors along
to take part in the messy
action.
The groups wanted to celebrate the hard work they
had put in over the past few
months and shoot a few
councillors in the process
all in the name of fun.
Moorabool Shire mayor
Paul Tatchell and Cr Tonia
Dudzik said it was a great
session.
Getting dressed up in camouflage gear and facing a big

bunch of teens with paintball guns was very exciting.

We had a great time and it
was a good opportunity to
have a chat to members from
our youth groups, Cr Tatchell said.
Cr Dudzik said getting out
and having fun with the
youth and allowing them to
take some shots at her and
the mayor was great reward
for the youth.
The kids had so much fun
and so did we. The Youth
Action Group has worked
so hard since they formed
in July this year, taking on
a number of projects and
establishing a program of
activities for 2014-15, Cr

Dudzik said.
The Youth Action Group
was funded from the State
Governments Youth Inclusion project to promote
youth engagement and to
ensure young peoples issues
are shared with Council and
the community. The group
meets fortnightly and is
mentored by Councils youth
services staff.
The group is made up of 16
people aged between 12 and
23, who live, work, study or
have other significant connections with Moorabool
Shire to be part of the decision making process of
Council.

Their primary focus since

forming is the development
of the Moorabool Youth
Charter. The YAG members
have consulted with young
people in the shire to determine what they feel is important to them to form the
basis of the charter.
The Youth Action Group
will not be looking for any
new members until July
2015.
However the FReeZA group
is always looking for new
members and anyone who
has an interest in Music and
Culture or running events
should contact the Youth
team on 5366 7100.

Favourable forum

BROADBAND,
policing,
farm rates, rail services,
sewerage, secondary schools
and youth recreation were
only some of the topics discussed at a forum with Buninyong candidates last week.
The forum, organised by
The Moorabool News, held
at Ballan attracted almost 40
residents from diverse backgrounds and gave Greens
candidate Tony Goodfellow,
Liberal candidate Ben Tay-

lor, Labor candidate Geoff

Howard and Nationals candidate Sonia Smith an opportunity to hear local issues
from locals.
Ian Dobson said crime was
on the increase and Ballan
needed a manned police station and extra police rather
than have patrols sent from
Creswick, Trentham or Bacchus Marsh.
Chris Sharkey spoke about

the challenges faced by

Moorabool farmers, in particular farm rates and Sonia
Smith proposed an equity
test and rate review.
Gabrielle Hodson asked for
a commitment for a secondary school in Ballan and
Moorabool Shire mayor and
forum chair Paul Tatchell
proposed a dedicated Years
7 and 8 campus to help children transition.

Community
developers
denied hand out
THE PRIVATE development of 500 hectares of land
at Camerons Road, Coimadai wont be financially
backed by Moorabool Shire
Council.
At a special meeting on
Wednesday October 15,
councillors voted to support
the rezoning of Camerons
Road from farming to rural living with a six hectare
minimum lot size for subdivision (through Amendment
C58). They also resolved to
send the amendment and
submissions to a planning
panel appointed by Victorian Planning Minister Matthew Guy.
However a motion for
Council to help the developers pay for a panel sitting
and advertising costs was

overturned.
Cr John Spain said the
private developers werent
your average developer and
shouldnt be tarred with
the same brush as corporate developers because
they are from our community and enjoy living in our
community.
They are people in our
community and we should
be assisting them in their
endeavours to make Camerons Road a better place,
Cr Spain said.
A long time ago in October
2010 the previous council
passed a resolution that if
this proceeded to panel,
Moorabool Shire would pay
certain costs and additional
panel costs would be paid by
the proponent. My motion

is to cap it at $15,000, with

the proponent likely to pay
some panel costs.
Cr Pat Toohey said Moorabool Shire had already spent
an estimated $60,000 of ratepayers money, including
staff time, to assist the developers in the process.
We have been extremely
fair. In the past the proponent pays the cost, not the
wider community. We have
gone over and above to assist this process. The proponents are the ones who will
eventually benefit from this.
I cannot support more funds
for this and I urge councillors to vote no to issue more
money, Cr Toohey said.
Mayor Paul Tatchell said
even though the proponents were all hard work-

ing people and not a large

corporate developer, it still
didnt change what a developer was. It doesnt matter
which way you look at it,
this is ratepayers money
and I have a responsibility
as a councillor.
Councillors Toohey and Sullivan voted with Cr Tatchell,
whilst Spain, Dudzik and
Comrie voted for the recommendation. Cr. Edwards was
an apology with Cr Tatchell,
as Mayor, having the deciding vote.
Amendment C58 was on
exhibition from July 31, 2014
to September 1, 2014. Council received 61 submissions:
eight opposed rezoning, 51
supported and two had no
objection.

Expo to highlight
land care

By Jessica Howard

Rural landholders can be

treated to a variety of agricultural displays this Saturday at the Moorabool Landcare Expo.
Held at the Mechanics Institute Hall in Ballan, the
Moorabool Landcare Network has something for
the whole family. The Wild
Action Zoo, while being
a favourite amongst both
children and parents, will
display a range of Australias
most famous and infamous
animals during two presentations held by zookeeper,
Chris Humphries.
Those attending the expo
will be met by members of
the Ballan Mens Shed with
a barbeque, along with public sculpture, Wilbur The
Weed. Wilbur was created
to highlight the problems
created by weeds, and normally resides in Blackwood.

Meanwhile,
landholders
wanting to develop their
properties as mainstream
agricultural enterprises will
be able to view the computerised farm planning
software Farm Plan 21, presented by the Department
of Primary Industries and
Environment.
A new guide to rabbit control will be launched on the
day, along with a revised
print of the Weeds of
Blackwood.
Landowners and local residents are encouraged to attend to make connections
with their local Landcare
group, discuss land management issues with government officers, and check out
their skills at identifying local weeds.
The expo will run from
10am to 3pm with a gold
coin entry for adults, and
children free.

Art springs
into season
By Jessica Howard
Moorabool Residents can treat themselves to an array of
paintings this season at the Lerderderg library, during the
Allawah Artists Spring Exhibition.
The Allawah Artists are a group of Moorabool based painters who meet regularly at Janice Websters Art Studio and
Gallery to share their common interest in art. Situated in
Bacchus Marsh, Allawah is the name of the picturesque
garden property where the studio is situated.
Six of the members will be exhibiting their paintings this
year, including Janice Webster, Alan and Kat Lindsay,
Shirley Thomas, Kaye Smith and Linda Oomes. With their
passions ranging from local landscapes and portraits to the
natural shapes of nature, the groups artwork is expressed
through mediums such as oils, pastels and watercolours.
The paintings will be featured during October and November in the Moor Art Space, located in the Lerderderg
Library.
We really just wanted to put on a bit of an exhibition to
celebrate spring, artist, Janice Webster said. Its been a
long and cold winter, and our floral paintings that are on
show just brighten everyone up.
Funded by the Moorabool Shire Council and the Central
Highlands Regional Library Corporation, Moor Art Space
presents artwork created by local artists and members of
the community to enhance the creative environment in
Bacchus Marsh.
Since opening on October 1, the Allawah Spring Exhibition has so far had four sales, which according to Ms Webster, was delightful to see that people were interested in
their work.
I think its lovely to see our works on display and under
the nice lighting that they have here. They are pretty prolific paintings, and its wonderful to have an opportunity to
hang our work somewhere for people to see, and its just delightful if someone likes them enough to purchase them.
At the end of October, the Allawah artists plan to change

Find mining
licences
online
A NEW web tool designed
to help Victorian communities locate mining and exploration activities in their
regions wont prevent the
gut-wrenching realisation
of finding out you have a
mining licence over your
land, says Kate Tubbs.
Ms Tubbs, a member of the
Moorabool Environmental
Group, said while the Victorian Governments Mining
Licences Near Me web tool
would help landholders see
what was going on before
they got a knock on the
door like us, it meant that
landholders were given the
burden of doing weekly
checks.

said the Mining Licences

Near Me web tool would
ensure greater transparency
for communities regarding
onshore and offshore industry activity in their region,
including minerals, gas and
quarries.
Victorians have a right to
know where, when and what
mining activities are being
undertaken in their region,
and this new government
tool enables them to swiftly
access this information, Mr
Northe said.

Landholders should be
contacted
directly
and
shouldnt have to check websites. Theres still a percentage of people who dont have
access or the ability to use
websites, Ms Tubbs said.

Mining Licences Near Me

shows petroleum and mineral tenements at both the
application and approved
stages. It also provides key
information including the
owner of the tenement, the
commodity being explored
or produced and the grant
dates for the license or
permit.

Resources Russell Northe

The Mining Licences Near

Me tool is available on the
Victorian Government Energy and Resources website
at energyandresources.vic.
gov.au/mlnm .

Landholders are the last

to know and they should
be the first ones contacted
to let them know whats actually happening or what
could possibly be going on.

MOORABOOL COMMENCES PROPERTY INSPECTIONS
FOR FIRE HAZARDS
Council Ofcers have commenced inspections for re prevention throughout the
Shire. Early indications are for a warmer than expected spring with reduced rainfall
and the CFA is advising Victorians to begin preparing for the coming re season.
Council urges you to prepare early and to maintain your property in a re ready
condition. Your property should be well maintained throughout the year as a well
maintained property stands a greater chance of surviving a bush or grass re.
Ensure that the grass and vegetation around your property is maintained and clear
the gutters of leaves and twigs. Remove material that can burn from around your
house and engage with your neighbours regarding your re plans and preparing your
properties. Remember that re prevention is the responsibility of everyone within
our community.
Council Ofcers will inspect properties throughout the Shire and issue Fire Prevention
Notices where a risk of re is identied. Heavy nes apply for failing to comply with
a Fire Prevention Notice and Council will engage contractors to complete the works
on the notice if they are not completed. The cost of these works will be recovered
from the property owner.
If you have an up-to-date re plan and your property is well maintained, you will have
done all you can to protect your family from the threat of re.
For more information on preparing your property and on re plans visit
www.cfa.vic.gov.au
For information regarding Fire Prevention Notices, contact the Municipal Fire
Prevention Ofcer at Moorabool Shire Council on 5366 7100.

The Fiskville Cup

The Ballan Group of Fire

Brigades held its annual
group training exercise,
known as the Fiskville Cup,
on Sunday 19 October. The
day was hosted by Millbrook
Fire Brigade and consisted
of nine different drills in a
round robin style within the
Millbrook brigade area.
The drills included a school
fire, MVA ute rollover, car
fire, filling from a collar

tank, grass fire / burnover

protection, first aid with a
mans arm stuck in a grain
auger, Mechanical officer
brief with radio procedures,
an excavator hitting power
lines and a clandestine drug
lab in a house.
The Fiskville Cup is necessary for local brigades to
hone their skills and learn
new ones prior to the up and
coming fire season in the

form of a competition. While

there is a trophy up for grabs
the main aim is for every one
to learn about incidents that
each brigade may come up
with in the future.
The day was enjoyed by all
participants especially the
Blackwood Brigade, winners
of the Fiskville Cup . They
were followed closely by Mt
Egerton and Wallace, equal
second with Millbrook third.

Blackwood also won the

Robert Molesworth Memorial Best Crew Leader award
with Jack Simmonds receiving the shield from Shane
Cramer (Ballan Group Officer). Jack had only recently
completed his crew leader
course.
Millbrook brigade won the
award for Best Presented
Truck.

Makeover to strengthen
community spaces
much work, the young families of Mt
Egerton will have a playground and it
is being set up as part of the community hall upgrade, Ms Smith said.
The playground will have shade sails
and landscaping, while the historic
1800s hall will also benefit from a pram
and wheelchair-friendly disabled toilet.
At Gordon Public Hall, funding will
also mean the users can now look forward to new decking and a storage
area.
This is another historic building and
its use is steadily increasing, thanks to

the mobile library service and community events.

Lal Lal Soldiers Memorial Hall will
also benefit with a new pergola and upgraded outdoor barbecue area.
All work is expected to be finished by
May 2016.
The $70,000 is part of a $186,628 Moorabool Hall Development Strengthening
Community Spaces project. Moorabool
Shire Council will contribute $65,000
while the remaining $50,000 is expected to be raised by the local community
and in-kind donations.

Soldiers return to Darley camp

By Kate Taylor
It is one of the most revered
battalions in Australian military history and veterans
from the 39th have made the
annual pilgrimage to Darley
to commemorate the beginning of a journey that started
more than 70 years ago and
for some, ended in the supreme sacrifice.
Five veterans joined more
than 30 family and Association members at the Darley
Cricket Club on Sunday 5
October to commemorate
the formation, and training,
of the 39th Battalion right
where it all started.
They come every year...
that was where it all started
so its a very special place,
said event organiser Merren
Stockdales.
For two months, from Octo-

ber 1941 until their deployment to Port Moresby (PNG)

on Boxing Day of the same
year, the soldiers trained
at the camp on Camerons
Road.
As Association vice President Alan Jameson explains,
less than 50 members of the
1500-strong battalion survive today.
They all have very fond
memories of Darley, although the training was
intense, they found time to
have fun, as boys do, sneak
out to the pub and even attend local dances.
New Guinea was no holiday; tropical disease, dysentery, bombing raids and
then the Kokoda Track and
a bitter fight with the enemy.
History records that the
courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice of the 39th

was a turning point in the

Battle for Australia.
The annual commemoration has been held at Darley
for the past eight years, said
Association member Norman Stockdales.
They appreciate the time
to get together, sit down, and
talk.
We thank the Darley
Cricket Club for allowing
us to use their clubrooms.
They welcome us with open
arms (and) were very, very
thankful for the use of their
facilities.
The original camp site
has been subdivided and
homes built on the land,
with stumps of the sheds remaining along with relics at
the nearby rifle range used
for target practice during
training.

The sale of the century!

ARE you overwhelmed by clutter and itching to have

a spring clean? Then why not join in Australias largest
garage sale trail on Saturday, October 25.
Individuals and community groups can either join
in the nations fastest growing sustainability event by
registering their garage sale at garagesaletrail.com.au or
they can participate in a pre-registered garage sale.
Darley Neighbourhood House and the Long Forest
Residents Group are seeking participants.
Darley Neighbourhood House manager Anna Curry
said this was the second year they would be holding a
community garage sale.
We started it last year because we decided to hold an
Open Day at the same time, Ms Curry said.
Well have a sausage sizzle and people can come and
talk to our staff, committee members and volunteers
about what we offer.
She said people could also pay $10 for a car boot spot
at the neighbourhood house to come and sell what you
dont want from the back of your car.
If they dont want a car boot site then they are
welcome to donate small bric a brac items in reasonable
condition to our White Elephant Sale. All prots will go
back to the Neighbourhood House, she said.
Its a lot of fun to be honest.
The Darley Neighbourhood House garage sale will take
place from 10am to 2pm at 33 Jonathan Drive, Darley.
The Long Forest Residents Group have organised, in
their own words: A Long Forest HUGE Garage Sale to
be held on Saturday, October 25 at the corner of Long
Forest Road and Sundew Avenue.
Garage sales will be based at both Sundew Avenue and
from local homes. The Coimadai CFA and Coimadai
Avenue of Honour Restoration Association will have a
sausage sizzle and stalls at Sundew Avenue.

1 in 3 have
warrant owing

MOORABOOL Shire has

double the amount of fine
evaders as neighbouring
Golden Plains Shire and
nearly triple that of Hepburn
Shire.
Statistics released last week
from the 2013/14 financial
year showed Moorabool had
10,933 outstanding warrants,
compared to Golden Plains
(5107) and Hepburn (3948).
Sheriff of Victoria, Brendan
Facey, said: Unfortunately
some people are still not getting the message that you
cannot hide from your unpaid fines.
Fines were issued for speeding, running red lights, unregistered vehicles, on the
spot infringements, failing
to pay tolls, parking and
public transport offences.
Moorabool Shires outstanding warrants for 2013/14
were valued at $4,483,292.
Mr Facey said serial offenders typically faced more serious consequences including
court appearances and the
possibility of jail.
People failing to pay their
fines face serious sanctions
including having their cars
clamped,
assets
seized
or their drivers licence

suspended.
It is frustrating that people
are not getting the message
that paying your fines is not
optional, Mr Facey said.
We are implementing a
range of measures in coming
years which will increase
our ability to help people
clear their outstanding warrants and fines, Mr Facey
said.
Figures for the 2013/14
years show nearly half of
all outstanding warrants relate to tolling offences, with
similar rates of toll and fine
avoidance as the 2012/13 financial year.
Too many people are letting their fines get out of
control, Mr Facey said.
Getting help with your
fines is easy, ignoring them
will lead to action from the
Sheriffs Office.
Call 1300 SHERIFF (Mon
- Fri, 8am - 9pm) and speak
to someone about your outstanding fines before the
Sheriff finds you.
Individuals can track and
pay their outstanding fines
at
www.fines.vic.gov.au
website or by visiting any of
the Justice Service Centres.

By Jessica Howard
The Bacchus Marsh Magistrate Court, with Michelle
Hodgsons presiding, saw to
44 criminal cases last Friday.
A Bacchus Marsh man
pleaded guilty to the possession of a dangerous weapon
and protected wildlife, after
police found the body of
a kangaroo and a samurai
sword in the boot of his vehicle. The man said he had the
sword for protection, and
found the dead kangaroo
on the side of the road, so
was taking it home for dog
meat. He received a $1000
fine and no conviction.
Meanwhile, four residents
received close to $500 worth
of combined fines for failing
to vote in the 2013 federal
election.
Magistrate Hodgsons said
that as much as you might
not want to, I can not stress
enough how important it is
to vote.
While three applications
for the removal of the alcohol interlock were successful, six local residents were
charged for driving whilst
suspended.

The ice is crying as the river carries her

tears to the sea
- Uncle Angaangaq Angakkorsuaq

This week I would like to

share the story of those of
the far north.

In the deep of winter of 1963

two young Eskimo-Kalaallit
men went hunting and came
to the big wall and did their
ceremony. As they did so,
they noticed that water was
coming out of the Big Ice
way up the wall. When they
returned and told the Elders
of that strange phenomenon
no one believed them. How
could water move, when the
temperature has been less
than minus 30 degrees Celsius for about three months.
Later that winter other Elders went hunting and upon
returning confirmed that
water was trickling out of
the Big Ice at the Big Wall.
That became the first sign
that something was amiss

not at home but in the

world.
Today that trickle has
grown to roaring rivers of
water pouring out of the Big
Ice into the Atlantic Ocean.
Since that first trickle was
noticed the average depth of
the Icecap has shrunk from
five kilometres to three,
and the melt is accelerating.
Today there are hundreds
of roaring rivers coming off
the Icecap year round. In
geological terms the rapidity
of ice melt in Greenland is
instantaneous.
Melting the Ice in the Heart
of Man is a teaching from
the Eskimo-Kalaallit people,
a peaceful culture thousands of years old that has
never known war. It summons us, to bridge the distance from our minds to our

hearts through strength and

gentleness; through compassion and love; through
courage and grace, bringing
about personal transformation and global healing for
the times to come. I have
to say that when reading
about the Eskimo-Kalaallit
peoples remark I cannot but
think of Australias prime
minister and his recent comment that coal is good. Here
is a sad example of someone
who has Ice in his heart.
And maybe we Australians
might not get off too lightly
maybe we also have ice in
our hearts.
But back to our story, Uncle
Angaangaq Angakkorsuaq,
Founder, IceWisdom International/Eskimo-Kalaallit
Elder at the climate change
rally recently in New York

shared his story of being

born on the ice, 67 years ago,
when the ice was 8-9metres
thick. He explained that the
great ice melt is not a myth
that his people had been
speaking about for years
because science has consistently shown that the ice has
been melting and is now
only about 2 metres thick.
Uncle Angaangaq told the
rally that he spoke to the
United Nations in 1978 about
the ice melting and that they
didnt listen. He said that
his elders had asked him to
speak to the UN at this event
and that his commitment,
which he invited everyone
to make with him, was to
melt the hearts of men. He
then called on his ancestors
using a traditional amplifier
which looked like two large

skinned drums held up

alongside his ears and face.
According to someone from
Australia who was at the
rally in New York the sound
was like nothing she had
ever heard or experienced
and she could imagine Uncle Angaangaqs call echoing across the ice sheet. She
found the speech and sound
incredibly moving and Ill
never forget his call for as
long as I live.
I will let the Eskimo-Kalaallit conclude this piece on
their terms. Is the glacier
laughing or crying? Nukartaa does not need to search
for the answer. She is crying, he says. The ice is crying and the river that you are
looking at there is carrying
her tears to the sea. Nukartaa says this with a look of

concern. Even he, a Greenlandic Elder, is close to tears.

Because you are torturing
Mother Earth, because you
are raping her, because you
are ignoring the knowledge
of the indigenous people. We
were the first to set foot on
the Big Iceand we will be
the last! he said. But no one
listens to us. You send your
scientists when you should
be listening to the words of
our Elders. They have been
living for thousands of years
with the ice. No one knows it
as well as they do.
What is your opinion?
Next MEG meeting: Thursday October 30th at 128 Possumtail Run Merrimu (last
house on the right). 7.30pm.

With growth in Victorias

property market starting
to moderate, now is a good
time for first homebuyers
and first-time investors to
consider their options.
Sales in regional Victoria
have been consistent over
the past 12 months, resulting
in solid price growth. But
with a more stable performance outlook and steady
interest rates set to continue,
securing a quality regional
property has become all the
more feasible.
A home is the biggest purchase we are likely to make,
and for those who are initiating a lifestyle change in the
country, the commitment is
more than just a financial
one.
For inexperienced or firsttime buyers, the process can
be daunting. Agents report
that some first homebuyers
have limited knowledge of
the sales process or even a
section 32 vendor statement
the information a seller
must provide about the
property.
The most important tip for
new buyers to bear in mind
when preparing to purchase
their first property is: do
your research so you know
what youre getting into.
The first step is to monitor
recent sales activity in the
town or region youre con-

sidering and the services

and amenities within that
area. If youre preparing to
settle there or relocate, think
about your most important
priorities: Will you be commuting some distance for
work and how long will this
take? Is there shopping close
by? What about essential
medical and other facilities?
If youre a first-time investor, look at the median rental
prices for that town and
whether youre likely to recoup your investment outlay
over a certain period. Is the
region growing and are rental properties in demand?
Work out your sums and
how much you can afford so
you dont overstretch your
finances. Its wise to leave
some breathing space in
case interest rates or other
circumstances change in the
future.
Furthermore, make sure
you fully understand the
buying process, what you
are signing up to, and all
the legal and financial
implications.
On Wednesday October 29,
the REIV in conjunction
with Consumer Affairs Victoria and the Law Institute
of Victoria is holding a free
information seminar in Melbourne for first homebuyers
and new investors.
Expert speakers will present on various topics such
as your legal rights and obligations, interest rates and
different mortgage types. I
will provide an overview of
the current state of Victorias
property market, geared to
first homebuyers and less
experienced investors.
Details on the Homebuyers Seminar can be found
at the REIV website www.
reiv.com.au where you can
register online or by calling
(03) 9205 6601 to reserve your
seat.

CANCERJune 22-July 22
A face to face encounter with someone you have avoided
could take place on the weekend. News from overseas
may arrive and it may be unexpectedly encouraging. Your
financial forecast shows signs of gradual recovery.

Stars & Puzzles

LEOJuly 23-August 22

Yours is the role of mediator, settling disputes among

family and colleagues alike. Pets may figure in the picture - you may adopt one or vice versa. Romance is upbeat through the weekend.
VIRGOAugust 23-September 22

QUICK PUZZLE

Forecasters are not reliable as you may like to think. If

in doubt, refer to past history. Ideas may come under fire
- absorb the criticism before stating your case.

LIBRASeptember 23-October 22
Do not expect to coast on recent success. To prosper now,
inventiveness is your key word. The emotional ups and
downs of the week are settling and by the end of the week
it will be smooth sailing.

ARIESMarch 21-April 20
Spend a little more time pursuing short term goals - they
can be yours by the end of the week. Rivals are using
new tactics, but dont try to beat them at their own game.
TAURUSApril 21-May 22
Seeking appraisals is highlighted, but sell nothing until
you have checked with several authorities. A family rift
may deepen unless you are willing to make at least the
first two moves.

NUMBER GAME

This is your week and any financial slowdowns could

come right by the weekend. It could be your busiest
weekend ever so take a breather and a rest on Monday.

ANSWER BELOW

SAGITTARIUSNovember 22-December 22
Ideas not fully developed can backfire. Care and thoroughness will pay large dividends later. Financial suggestions are on the right track but need further
clarification.
CAPRICORNDecember 23-January 20
Health concerns become a priority so take no short cuts
in this area. Travel ideas brighten. The key now is to find
an appropriate companion - you dont have to look far at
all.
AQUARIUSJanuary 21-February 19
A friends criticism is unusually harsh, perhaps reflecting some strain he/she is under. This could be a
financially flush week, so the time may be right to pamper
yourself.
PISCESFebruary 20-March 20
Take advantage of familys unanimity, which could last
all through the weekend. If dealing with other peoples
emotions or finances, pursue a more conservative
approach.

GEN WHY

BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK

You are a person who has splendid taste (usually expensive) and an ability to see both sides of every situation.
Work on becoming more decisive - this could be benificial
as far as your career achievement is concerned. A relationship with a Leo may strengthen.

The second game into the season with
four first year players, the team is
performing above expectations. The
performance in the field was a great
team effort, with second gamer Evan
Shaw being the stand out, taking a
wicket, a catch and a run out. The top

performance, lead by Jack McGregor,

The first game for the under 12s was

an excellent return from a long break
which although didnt result in a win
for the team, showed how far they
have come in 12 months. All players
made runs and were excellent in the
field and a big congratulations to first
game player Jayce Bower who opened
the bowling and made his first runs in
cricket.

Ballan Cricket Club is still looking for boys and girls to play Under 12s and Under 16s. Contact Mick Loughnane on 0429 163

Ladies sink the pink on green

A group of Bacchus Marsh
women were tickled pink
last week, during the
McGrath Breast Cancer Day
held at the Bacchus Marsh
Golf Club.
The 27 club members
dressed in pink, took to the
green to enjoy a stableford
event, where points were
scored based on the number
of strokes taken at each hole.
Held on Wednesday, the
event was part of a weeklong promotion to help raise

money for the McGrath

Foundation.
Lady Captain of the Bacchus Marsh Golf Club, Margot Dunne said it was all
about having fun and being
aware of breast cancer.
We all dressed up and had
a few giggles, she said.
Anything we can do for
charity is always good, as we
are the more fortunate ones
who are able to be out there
playing golf.
The stableford event was
played with pink flags and

balls, and saw club member

Mandy Willaton take the
win with a score of 45 points.
The Club raised close to
$300 on the day, however Ms
Dunne said that with a little
more planning, they hope to
raise a lot more in the future.
We only had about two
weeks before the event,
however on the 12th of November we are having an
Ovarian Cancer Day and we
are really hoping that there
will be a lot of people from
various other clubs.

On a near perfect day for

bowling, Avenue Bowling
Club participated in Round
3 of the BDBD weekend pennant competition.
Premier Divisionjourneyed toWebbcona in a
must win game for both
sides which,sat second last
and last on the Premier Division ladder before the game.
With some first class bowling by both sides, Avenue
jumped away to a good start
with Martin Sheas rink
gaining a big lead from the
start. Ken Warrick put on a
brilliant display of leading
and Alan Reid, as second,
had some great bowls to win
by 18 shots
Andrew Myers rink battled
hard and won a thriller on
the last end by one shot,
with Sam Shannahan, although losing, picking up
seven shots on the last two
ends. Glenn Sargents rink,
with Conrad Dawson drawing well also got the job done
with a solid 14 shot win,
earning Avenue a valuable
16 shot victory and a buffer
over their opponents on the
ladder.
Next week in Premier Division history will be made
with Avenue playing Sebastopol in the first twilight

game ever at the local club,

starting at 3.30pm instead
of the normal 1.00pm. Final
scores Avenue 96 def Webbcona 82
Division 3 hosted Ballan
who Avenue defeated by
one shot in last years final
series. Led by strong performances by debut Division
3 skip Charlie Grant (14
shots up) and Glenn Davies
(20 shots up) Avenue were
able to notch up an overall
31 shot win overtheir rivals
to retain top spot on the ladder. For the second time this
season, Bill Hawkens rink,
which fought valiantly all
day, picked up two shots on
the last end to win by the
solitary shot. The only unsuccessful rink was that of
Frank Pomeroy which just
missed out by four shots,
against arguably Ballans
best rink.
Final scores Avenue 100 def
Ballan 69
Division 5 travelled to Midlands Golf full of confidence
after an unbeaten start to the
season. For the Avenue only
Laurie Burkes rink was successful on the day, winning
by one shot in an epic battle.
Peter Glass rink also battled
hard with scores level on five
occasions during the game,
however they could not rein
in the six shot start by Midlands Golf, to eventually go
down by three shots. Dave
McKendricks rink trailed all
day, but never gave up and
won three of the last four
ends to ultimately go down

by nine shots. A similar

story exists for Peter Thistlethwaites rink which lost
by eight shots, after being
12 shots behind with three
ends to go.
Final scores Avenue 77 lost
Midlands 98
Division 8 responded in
an excellent fashion after
last weeks narrow two
shot victory by dominating new team Bungaree by
a massive 139 shots. It must
be accepted that their opponents were all relatively
new bowlers, but Avenue
still had to produce the shots
when required. Thestartling
thing about the victory was
the fact that two rinks both
scored the magical 8 twice
during the game. Its akin to
two foursomes in golf each
scoring two holes-in-one on
the same day at the same
course - a vary rare event.
For Avenue, Stewart Wilsons rink won by a staggering 52 shots, Di Hardiment
by 31 shots, Stan Cumming
by 30 shots and Ron Millington by 26 shots in a comprehensive all round display.
Final scores - Avenue 177
def Bungaree 38
In Midweek Pennant, Avenue Division 1 suffered a 20
shot loss to Creswick, with
each rink suffering narrow
losses. The Division 2 match,
also against Creswick was
ultimately washed out, with
the points for the day being
shared.

Darley Cricket Club

Results
Last Friday night concluded
the opening round of the
Under 12 competition with
two wins and a loss in the
Melton Junior Cricket Association whilst Saturday was
the start of Round Two and
turf matches for the Junior
and Senior Ballarat Cricket
Association matches.
Seniors
Whilst unable to bowl the
opposition out, the 1st XI
bowled tight all day to restrict Napoleons-Sebastopol
to just 159 runs which paves
the way for an achievable
run chase at Darley Park this
Saturday. Leg Spinner Brian
Wheelahan was the pick of
the bowlers with 2-24 of 14.
Darleys innings will start
at 1pm at Darley Park this
Saturday.
Also with their turf table
up and running the 2nd XI
travelled to Napoleons and
were sent out to field in great
conditions for cricket. Ben
Hall 3-37 starred with the
ball as Darley knocked the
home side over for 177 in the
64th over of the day. Chris
Mackenzie 2-17 and Ben Longhurst 2-42 also had great
returns with the ball, whilst
Ben also starred with the bat
finishing unbeaten on 56 as
Darley had 13 overs to being
the run chase. Darley will
be looking for a strong win
when they resume on 1-66.
The 3rd XI also bowled extremely well knocking over
Napoleons-Sebastopol for 68
in the 31st over, and will be
bowling again first up and
seeking an outright win at
Darley Civic Hub this Saturday after also being bowled
out for 104 at stumps. 14
year-old Jye Stephenson

blew away the opposition

with three for just nine deliveries. Hamish Wheeler
3-19 and Daniel Hynes 2-17
were the other bowling
highlights, whilst Captain
Beau Jamieson led the way
again with a knock of 31.
The Fourths are the only
senior side in trouble after
being bowled out for just 53
whilst Napoleons-Sebastopol is already a long way in
front at stumps finishing on
5-240. Youngster Josh Hynes
(9) and 12 year old Jordan
Monaghan (8) were the notable exceptions with the bat
, although surprisingly there
were no ducks recorded
in Darleys innings. It was
another youngster leading
the way with the ball with
13 year-old Brandan Foley
taking two for just 16 off
six overs whilst the home
side were scoring freely
elsewhere. Josh Hynes also
bowled well taking 2-59 in
what was a trying day for
the team.
Juniors
The Under 16 Gold were
also home on the turf wicket
against Wendouree and
managed 97 runs after batting first. Matthew Thacker
(25) and opener Corey Beaton (17) who lasted six partnerships were the highlights
with the bat. Darley had
three quick overs to bowl at
the Red Caps and did very
well to restrict the visitors to
just seven runs. This Saturday should be exciting with
plenty of bowling firepower
available to rein in Wendouree cheaply for a win.
The Under 16 Blue have a
big run chase ahead of them
this Saturday in their home
game at Darley Civic Hub
against North Ballarat who
were evenly bowled out for
275 just on stumps. James
Higgins starred with the
ball with 4-24 while James

Hunts 2-16 and Nathan Gale

2-47 also bowled well. With
the batting stock available,
Darley just need to bat out
the overs to make this target.
The Under 14s are in a commanding position after Day
One against Golden Point at
White Flat Oval finishing on
1/110 after their allotted first
day overs, whilst Golden
Point are 2/41 in reply off
their 25 overs. Golden Point
will bat first this Saturday
and Darley will be looking
to secure a win before even
needing to resume their split
innings.
Under 12 Pride 3-243 had
a big win over Melton Centrals 56 in their home game
at Darley Civic Hub. Brodie
Ward 3-7, Aaron Cadman
2-2, and Luke Hayward 2-7
stared with the ball, Adam
Azzopardi 26* and Bailey
Young 27* stared with the
bat in an innings full of retirements as the team shared
batting duties around to enjoy the win.
Under 12 Cubs batted well
to finish on 85 with five
wickets in hand after their
40 overs at Masons Lane,
but were unable to restrict
Melton West who reached
the total just 3 wickets down
and with 16 overs to spare.
Under 12 Roar had a big win
over Melton South at Mount
Carberry finishing on 7-181
off their 40 overs in reply to
Melton Souths 7/105 off 40.
Michael Bill finished on 2-15
with the ball, whilst with the
bat it was Ryan Densley 31*,
Will Johns 27*, Will Porter
27* and Noah Simmons 22
who starred with the bat.

Darley Pride take on Darley

Roar on the turf at Darley
Park this Friday night while
Melton South will host the
Darley Cubs at Mt Carberry
in another round of two day
matches.
