What equipment is required for Multibeam Surveying?

Hydrographic surveying with a multibeam requires more sensors than
singlebeam surveying, as we are gathering a swath of sounding data. First this
means we have to measure the vessel - position, motion and attitude. Then we
need to know the environment water column and surface sound velocity.

POSITION is typically obtained by a GPS. This
gives the update rate that is required for a
multibeam. Differential GPS is recommended
for multibeam survey as systems with an
uncertainty over 1 meter can become evident
in the survey data.
Various GPS systems available
The MULTIBEAM ECHO SOUNDER
combines the transmit elements, the
receive elements and the electronics to
send sounding data to the computer
that is running the survey suite. This
may be mounted in the hull of the vessel
or on an over the side mount.

The Heave, Pitch and Roll, or MOTION of the
vessel is measured by the motion sensor. This
may be mounted in the boat, on an over the
side mount, or next to the multibeam echo
sounder.
A high quality motion sensor is optimal to
obtaining good quality data in a multibeam
system.

HEADING may be obtained by a GPS
heading system, a gyrocompass or as part
of a combined heading and motion sensor
(Inertial Navigation System). This sensor
ensures the alignment of the multibeam
swath is correct with relation to the
position and motion of the vessel.

REAL TIME SOUND VELOCITY ensures that
the flat-faced multibeam can correctly
beamform for the type of water it is
operating in. This is crucial for accurate
data, especially in surveying areas where the
temperature or salinity of the water
changes.
