Foreword
As a new Principal I have been speaking to staff about my vision for the future of the University.
This centres on the three themes of Excellence, Focus and Impact which are as important to our
students and their experience at the University of Dundee as they are to the staff. The DRIVE
project resonates with all three themes and more. It is ambitious and aspirational which are values at
the heart of the excellence theme. The skills of participants are honed and directed towards a very
specific goal and these skills are relevant to the real world and valued by potential employees.
Teamwork, resourcefulness and a competitive edge add to the mix.
DRIVE meets all my expectations of the innovative and challenging learning opportunities that
should be available at a world class university. I wish all participating students and staff success in
this project and in the Formula Student competition.
Professor Sir Peter Downes
Principal
I am delighted to support the DRIVE team in their participation in the Formula Student competition.
In the College of Art, Science and Engineering we aim to provide our students with the highest
quality education based on leading edge research, and to give them the opportunities to develop a
broad portfolio of skills which will prepare them for a wide variety of careers.
The DRIVE experience is a wonderful example of this approach. It allows students to take the
initiative and to apply what they have learned in the lecture theatre and the laboratory and apply this
to a real world problem. The engineering and problem-solving skills the team need to complete their
challenge will be of great value to them in their future careers. I am delighted we have been able to
offer the students the opportunity to take part in Formula Student.
I am proud of what the DRIVE team has achieved to date and I wish them every success in the
competition.

Vice Principal & Head of College of Art, Science & Engineering

Introduction by the Team Leader
The University of Dundee is one of the UKs leading universities, internationally recognised for its
expertise across a range of disciplines including science, medicine, engineering and art.
Formula Student is set up to promote careers and excellence in Engineering. Students are
required to design, manufacture, cost and present a single-seater racing car, testing students not only
in design and manufacture, but also in many of the management, marketing and people skills that
will be so vital throughout their careers.
Through DRIVE students can apply their academic studies to a real world environment,
providing an opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities, and a great learning experience.
I would like to thank you in advance for your generosity in supporting DRIVE. With the
technical assistance, advice and support of our sponsors we hope to achieve great things.
Michael Poller
Team Leader 2009-2010
Introduction by the Academic Co-ordinator
Involvement with DRIVE provides an invaluable opportunity for students to work in an industry/
business type environment, allowing them to apply the knowledge gained from their studies to a real-
world challenge and to extend their skills and experiences - something that they do not ordinarily
experience during their studies. Mechanical Engineering was voted the Third best Mechanical Engineering
Department in the UK in the May 2009 Guardian University League Tables.
The students involved in the team are all highly motivated and willingly devote a large proportion
of their spare time to working with the team. A pre-requisite for membership is excellent time
management, since students have to co-ordinate this extra work with their already very busy academic
schedule. Other attributes that are expected of them include professionalism, team working, inter-
personal and communication skills, pro-activity, innovation and problem solving skills, all qualities
highly valued by employers.
Although it involves a lot of hard work (and sometimes very late hours), DRIVE provides team
members with a huge sense of achievement and pride as well as a lot of enjoyment, especially when
the car is performing well and beating the competition!
Obtaining sponsorship is another important role for the team members, since without it DRIVE
would not exist. Obtaining sponsorship not only helps with finances, it also produces valuable contacts
with industry and is in itself a measure of the success of the team. The benefits for sponsors include
exposure at events and in publicity photographs, improved links with the University and enhanced
opportunities to recruit some of the very best graduates.
The Times Higher Education, Student Experience Survey of January 2009 rated Dundee
University Second in Scotland for all-round student experience, I am sure the experience the students gain
from DRIVE contributed to this award.
Dr Alan Slade
Academic Co-ordinator

Overview of Formula Student
In 1998 the Institution of Mechanical
Engineers (IMechE) accepted the
management of the European venture in
a partnership with the Society of
Automotive Engineers (SAE) who started
running their Formula SAE programme in
1981. Formula Student is different from
Formula SAE in that it is designed to be a
progressive learning exercise throughout a
three or four year academic course.
However, the same rules are used for both
Formula Student and Formula SAE and
this means that student teams can enter
their cars in the Formula SAE in the US,
Formula Student, Formula Student
Germany and Formula SAE in Australia.
For the universities, Formula Student
represents a valuable project that blends
academic work and learning with the development of practical engineering skills. For the students,
it provides opportunities to develop and demonstrate their skills, enthusiasm, ingenuity and
commitment to engineering excellence. For industry, it provides opportunities to foster close links
with academia.
Ross Brawn, FS Patron and IMechE Fellow said There were some exceptionally good teams and
entrants this year. The variety and breadth of talent out there was what was so exciting about the event. If the FS cars
were all pristine, perfect examples it would be a boring competition, which makes Formula 1 a little bit sterile. Seeing
these sorts of things at FS is quite exciting.
The 2009 Formula student competition attracted 111 teams from 21 different countries.
Overview of DRIVE
The main objectives of DRIVE are initially to be the top Scottish team within the first three years of
our entering the competition and then to be the top British team. DRIVE will aim to obtain a high
profile on behalf of the University and its sponsors.
We will achieve these objectives by producing innovative vehicles through high standards of
design and engineering. DRIVE has a two-year strategy for each car, in which the car is designed
and analysed in the first year and subsequently built and tested in the second. This ensures the design
is thorough and fully optimised, as well as providing ample time to test the car and compete at track
events and sprints/hillclimbs and also to
develop the teams ability to operate and
push the car to the limits.
Student involvement with the team
is in addition to normal academic studies
all of which is aimed at encouraging the
most enthusiastic and resourceful students.
DRIVE is based in the Fulton
Building and comprises a car preparation
area, welding and fabrication area, an
equipment/parts store, a CAD design area
and a small hospitality area. The team has
access to the School workshop.

Overview of The University of Dundee
The University of Dundee sits at the heart of the historic city of Dundee on the banks of the River
Tay in north east Scotland - a landscape of wild beaches, golf courses, mountains and lochs. The
University of Dundee is one of the UKs leading universities, internationally recognised for its expertise
across a range of disciplines including science, medicine, engineering and art, graduating more students
into the professions than any other university in Scotland. It has attracted an 88% increase in student
applications since 2000, more than any other Scottish university. Today, the University is home to
more than 18,000 students and 3,000 staff.
In 2007, the University celebrated 40 years since it became an independent university after a
70 year relationship with the University of St. Andrews. The University has seen some major
changes in that time. The past decade has been a particularly exciting time of progression and change
- since 1994 the University has more than doubled in size.
The mission statement first written in 1967 to advance and diffuse knowledge, wisdom
and understanding by teaching and research and by the example and influence of its
corporate life, continues to focus the University today as it powers forward as one of the UKs top
institutions for teaching and research across a broad range of disciplines.
The University of Dundee is;
One of the UKs top 20 universities - The Guardian, May 2008,
One of the worlds top seven Intelligent Communities - US think-tank Intelligent
Community Forum, January 2008
and
Ranked first in the UK for teaching quality - The Times and Times Higher Education
Supplement.
Shortlisted as University of the Year 2008 - Times Higher Education Awards,

Sponsorship Opportunities
DRIVE welcomes sponsorship in many forms. At the basic partner level this can just be advice and
technical assistance, and then range through help with component procurement, donations of
equipment and pats right up to direct financial support of the team.
Sponsorship Benefits
As part of the basic sponsorship benefits, all of our sponsors have the opportunity to work with
some of the most talented young engineers in Scotland and therefore exposure to potential graduate
recruits. Sponsors of Sapphire level or above are also encouraged to hold events at Dundee to raise
awareness of their company to the team and other engineering students and staff. We encourage
our sponsors to visit us whenever possible, all of which helps to generate a great team spirit, not to
mention the opportunity to acquire some useful contacts in this diverse and stimulating environment.
In addition, all sponsors receive a photograph of the team and car, updates via our regular
newsletter and our website - www.DRIVE.dundee.ac.uk/. Examples of events the team will attend
include the University Freshers Week and open days, schools events, track days as well as, of
course, the increasingly popular Formula Student event itself.
