Committed to God, Church and Community
A Monthly Publication of the Canaan Baptist Church
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God" - John 1:1

G
race and peace unto you!

Every Sunday morning, we see many people from the Tri-State area leave their
homes and make their way to Canaan for worship. As they enter the doors of the
sanctuary, their minds and hearts await to hear God's Word. With the
atmosphere filled with excitement, powerful prayers, and songs of joy escaping
the mouths of those in attendance, the providential blessing and presence of the
Holy Spirit moves in. It is at this moment when the congregation bears witness to
the gracious creation of God and His Will for the church - the power of the Word
of God.

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the
gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach
deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty
them that are bruised" - Luke 4:18

In essence, the power in preaching is found in the Holy Spirit working with and
through God's Word. It is this sacred document that is the centerpiece of our Holy
God speaking to an unholy people. In order to further experience the power and
goodness of God, we must understand that the Word of God is powerless, unless
the Holy Spirit moves. When the Holy Spirit moves, the experience of this divine
communication should warm the heart, intrigue the mind, awaken the capacity of
the soul, and move one towards Christian living and spiritual fulfillment.
Consequently, this is reflective of the power of hearing and preaching God's Word.

"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every
creature" - Mark 16:15

Accordingly, preaching is the declaration of the gospel, which is the Good News. It
reveals and points out the problem of sin, but it also gives the remedy for sin,
which is salvation in Christ Jesus. Likewise, in preaching God's Word, it has the
power to uplift, encourage, teach and lead people to the kingdom of God. Truly,
Jesus was the greatest preacher to ever live. His preaching raised the dead,
calmed the raging seas, healed the sick, cast out demons, fed 5000 people, and
ushered in a new dimension of social justice. Above all, He most importantly
brought humility into the criteria for a closer relationship with God, the Father.

The Power of Preaching
Welcome and Greetings
Page 2
Thank you for worshipping with us at Canaan Baptist Church. The corporate
life of this congregation is the true witness of the vitality of our faith. While
the high point of our Christian service is to be found in the experience of
Sunday worship, what we do from Monday to Saturday, speaks volumes
about Canaans commitment and dedication to Christ and our community.

Canaan is a family where all of us are saved sinners hammering out our
salvation under the auspices of Gods amazing grace. We are structured, but
not so structured as to prevent the powerful work of the Holy Spirit to impact
the life of our in-reach and outreach ministries. We are organized, but not
so organized to prevent the organism, which is the Church, from bearing full
life.
We Welcome You!

In summary, Beloved, as we continue our focus on the spiritual journey ahead in the Arise and
Build Campaign, I will continue to preach the Word of God in this great church. After all, it is the
essence of Canaan's existence. As your pastor, the preaching of God's Word will continue to be the
central responsibility of my ministry in the life of Canaan. To emphasize, we will continue to
preach the Good News about God, His power and glory. It is this Good News that will expose the
heart of God and ignite love for Him in the hearts of all believers.
