Graders Receive
Donated Dictionaries to Help Further Education

Part of AT&T Pioneers 9
th
Annual Dictionaries for Success Project;
Students Also Learn About Legislative Process from State Rep. J ohn J agler

WATERLOO, Tuesday, October 21, 2014 Over 65 third graders from Waterloo Elementary School
received their own personal dictionaries from the AT&T Wisconsin Pioneers today as part of a statewide
project designed to improve childhood literacy and student reading scores. The students also learned about
the legislative process from State Representative John Jagler (R-Watertown), their legislator at the State
Capitol in Madison.

Todays event was a great opportunity for our students to meet their state representative and learn about
the legislative process, said Maureen Adams, Principal of Waterloo Elementary School. It was also a neat
way to introduce our third graders to the dictionary, a wonderful educational tool they will find useful
throughout their academic careers. Partnerships with volunteers like the AT&T Pioneers really make a
positive impact on education and a positive difference for children.

During the event, local AT&T Pioneers showed the students what information they can find in the dictionary.
They also demonstrated how the books can be used to learn vocabulary development, word pronunciation,
the different meanings of words, and how to compare and contrast words.

Rep. Jagler also talked with the students about the legislative process in Madison, how a bill becomes a law,
and how the dictionary will be a lifelong learning tool that will help them in their academic and work careers.

Waterloo Elementary does an excellent job educating and preparing its students to become successful and
productive members of our community, Rep. Jagler said. These dictionaries from the AT&T Pioneers will
be a terrific additional resource for Waterloos third graders as they continue to grow and learn.

The AT&T Wisconsin Pioneers are donating 6,500 dictionaries to students at 130 schools statewide as part
of its 9
th
annual Dictionaries for Success program. The Pioneers are a local organization of AT&T
employees and retirees who are dedicated to volunteering their time to various community causes.

Schools in Waterloo, Watertown, Waukesha, Muskego, Oconomowoc, Cudahy, Green Bay and Eau Claire
are among the schools that are receiving donated dictionaries from the Pioneers this year.

At AT&T, we are committed to helping advance the education of our young people, said Julie Tonkovitz,
AT&T Wisconsin Director of External Affairs and a local Pioneer. We are proud to partner with Waterloo
Elementary School and Rep. Jagler to provide our students with the tools they need to become our future
leaders.
