Introduction
Beep 4 Teachers Resource Book offers information and tips to help you get the mos
t out of the complete selection of teachers materials. It also contains additiona
l photocopiable resources to help encourage and support the childrens learning. T
here are eight different sections, with graded areas to ensure that all levels o
f the class advance. Weaker students will gain from the extra support and strong
er students will have further resources to stimulate their learning. Using the s
ections Beep optional worksheets can be photocopied according to the needs of in
dividual children or the class as a whole. There are suggestions on when each ac
tivity should be done in the Teachers Book to assure that the content and vocabul
ary have been covered in the lesson. There are eight sections.

Language worksheets, at three levels Ne

wcomers worksheets Phonics worksheets Communicative activities Reader worksheets
Reading and Writing worksheets Tests DVD worksheets Language The Language secti
on includes three worksheets for each unit: Reinforcement, for children below th
e level of the class, Consolidation, for children at the level of the class, and
Extension, for children above the level of the class. The worksheets are simila
r, but the level of difficulty varies. Answer keys for all the worksheets are pr
ovided at the end of the book. Newcomers The Newcomers section provides topic ba
sed worksheets that are designed to be used by children joining the class at dif
ferent times of the year. They provide basic vocabulary activities that will hel
p the integration of children who are new to the class. Answer keys for all the
worksheets are provided at the end of the book. Phonics The Phonics section prov
ides one worksheet per unit. These are designed to be used after lesson 7, along
side the Tongue Twister and Beep poster. As they work through the Phonics worksh
eets, the phonemes and graphemes are repeated throughout, allowing the children
to become familiar with them. Phonics is a very useful tool to focus on pronunci
ation and spelling difficulties. An early exposure to the sounds of English shou
ld prevent greater difficulties with understanding and pronunciation at a later
stage. Answer keys for all the worksheets are provided at the end of the book. C
ommunicative activities This section encourages the participation of all the stu
dents. The fun activities and games give plenty of opportunities for speaking an
d interaction among the children, including those who are more reluctant to spea
k.
Tips Get enough photocopies of the worksheets in advance with a couple of sp
are copies just in case.
Keep a copy for yourself to mark on any comment
s about how the children found the activity. Reinforcement worksheets are us
eful for children struggling with the level of the Students Book. They can be giv
en as a homework activity.
Extension worksheets can be used for fast finis
hers, for a more advanced study of the level, or given as a homework activity.
2

Reader The Reader worksheets are designed to be used with Beep 5 Reader. The Rea
der worksheets fully exploit the section, making the most out of the childrens en
joyment of the story. Answers are provided at the end of the book. Reading and w
riting The Reading and writing section consists of worksheets based on the activ
ity types found in the Young Learner Exams, but using the vocabulary found in ev
ery unit of the Students Book. Answer keys for all the worksheets are provided at
the end of the book. Tests The Test section includes a Diagnostic test to be ca
rried out at the beginning of the year, a two page test per unit and a four page
, End of year test. The tests include a variety of activities so that all childr
en, whatever their particular strength or weakness, have an equal opportunity to
do well in the tests. Lesson plans for testing are provided in the Evaluation l
esson at the end of each unit in the Teachers Book. There is one listening activi
ty included in each test, this is recorded on the Class audio and the script is
provided in the Teachers Book. Answer keys for all the tests are provided at the
end of the book. DVD Beep 5 DVD is an entertaining teaching resource with two ma
in sections. Pedros project is an animated short story containing the key vocabul
ary and structures from Beep 5. Throughout the Beep series, stories have been a
main focus. The appealing characters and plot in Pedros project, which make use o
f humour and dramatic tension, reinforce the positive experience of learning Eng
lish. The story acts as a vehicle for revisiting core unit language and provides
an opportunity to encounter the
language in a meaningful context. The story also helps students to develop their
understanding of narrative elements; such as sequencing, visual literacy, and p
lot and character development. The worksheets which you can find in a photocopia
ble format in this Teachers Resource Book are also available onscreen in the DVD.
The Real Kids section consists of three video extracts thematically linked to t
he material covered in each term in the Students book. The extracts are taken fro
m authentic situations and feature native English speakers. They can be watched
with or without subtitles. This type of communication, in which other cultural a
nd social elements come into play, is an effective way to stimulate interest in
learning. Both worksheets and transcripts for this area are provided. Note: Both
the Animated story and the Real Kids section can be played with subtitles for r
eading practice. Depending on the level and confidence of your class you may lik
e to play short excerpts from the DVDs, once witho ut the subtitles (this is esp
ecially challenging for the stronger students), then with subtitles for better u
nderstanding and finally again without the subtitles. The last time can be parti
cularly satisfying for children as they become familiar with the sounds of Engli
sh, helped by the visual references of the DVD. Other resources Flashcards Flash
cards are an excellent classroom tool to help introduce, reinforce and review vo
cabulary. Beep comes with a pack of 63 full colour flashcards illustrating key v
ocabulary. Instructions for using the flashcards are given in the teaching notes
for each lesson. Each picture flashcard has a corresponding word card which can
be used to help develop childrens reading skills, to assist in writing activitie
s and to use in matching activities.
3

The Beep flashcards can also be used in a variety of games which are explained i
n the Teachers Book. Children learn best when they enjoy what they are doing and
games provide a way to engage childrens interest and enthusiasm. Games offer valu
able opportunities to use the language for real purposes and provide enjoyable o
ccasions for repeating and reinforcing the language, supporting retention and re
call. Games which incorporate active methodology, using physical response are id
eal for assimilating language. Posters There are a total of eight double-sided p
osters for permanent use in the classroom. The double-sided posters include the
key vocabulary of each unit in large, colourful illustrations and a tongue twist
er which allows you and the children to focus on pronunciation and phonics. Ther
e are more general reviews and activities on eight of the poster faces, which co
mplete the set. The Teachers Book gives full instructions of when and how to use
the posters. Tips
Put two nails or drawing pins on the wall or in the woo
d of the blackboard and hang up the poster using two bulldog clips to avoid dama
ge and the mess of Blu-Tack or adhesive tape. The poster is easily displayed and
reversed.
Hang the posters at the height of the children so that they can
easily see them and participate in the activities. Story cards Storytelling is
very much part of the primary curriculum and Beep provides an entertaining story
in each unit. Beep resources include a pack of 64 full colour story cards 8 per
story. On one side, the story cards have an enlarged version of the illustratio
ns for each story in the Students Book and the text for that part of the story on
the reverse.
Use the cards to:
Tell the story before, during or after listening.
Ask children to predict what might happen in the story.
Practise questi
ons and answers.
Introduce and practise vocabulary.
Practise tempor
al sequencing of a story.
Describe a scene.
Develop reading and lit
eracy skills. i-solutions pack All the Beep digital components include a complet
e Users guide, accessible from the main menu screen. They run on Windows, Linux a
nd MAC operating systems and are compatible with all interactive whiteboard (IWB
) software. Open the readme.txt file in each CD for minimum requirements and ins
tructions. The Beep i-solutions pack includes two CD-ROMs: Beep i-book Activity
Generator How to use the i-solutions pack 1) Beep i-book The Beep Teachers i-book
is the digital version of the Beep course, which integrates all the teaching ma
terials into one single format. This fully interactive resource provides teacher
s with alternative and innovative ways to approach the Beep course content. It c
an be used in two different ways: as an interactive guide to prepare lessons, an
d in class with an interactive whiteboard (IWB). The Beep Teachers i-book contain
s the Students Book, the Activity Book, the Teachers Book, the Teachers Resource Bo
ok, the Grammar Booklet and the Beep Reader as well as i-flashcards, i-posters,
i-story cards plus extra interactive activities which provide thorough practice
of the course content. Audio material and teachers notes for all the teaching mat
erials are also included. How to use the Beep Teachers i-book on an interactive w
hiteboard (IWB) The Beep Teachers i-book is very user-friendly. Using the i-book
in class is a wonderful way to
4

focus the childrens attention on the specific content you wish to work with, sinc
e what they see on the IWB is also in their books. Follow these simple steps to
work with the course materials in class: 1.
Click on the book you want to u
se. 2. Click on the unit. 3. Click on the task to enlarge it in a new window
. Access all the resources you may need to complete the task, such as answer key

coloured links which lead to corresponding sections in other components of the c
ourse. Pink: these links take you to the Students Book. Purple: these links take
you to the Activity Book. Green: these links take you to the Teachers Book. Orang
e: these links take you to the Teachers Resource Book. Red: these links take you
to the i-posters, i-flashcards, i-story cards and i-activities for the unit. Lis
tening activities in the i-book Not only can you hear the listening activities,
you can also see them!
Tasks with a CD symbol are recorded. To listen to the a
udio, click on the task. A new window will open.
Use the buttons at the
top of the window to play, stop, pause, rewind or fast forward the track.

io.

Children can listen and read at the same time using the controls in the transcr
ipt window. Images and pictures in the i-book All the images and pictures in the
i-book can be enlarged. This is a fantastic feature of the Beep Teachers i-book
and you can use it to maximize opportunities for developing childrens oral skills
. i-flashcards, i-story cards and i-posters Use the i-flashcards, i-story cards
and i-posters to present content and revise key concepts throughout the unit. Al
ternate or combine the use of conventional flashcards, story cards and posters w
ith the interactive ones to make your teaching more varied and to maintain the c
hildrens attention. The interactive tools for the children are placed at a lower
level on the screen to facilitate their participation with the IWB. The interact
ive tools for the teacher are located at the top of the screen to help you guide
and control the childrens work. Encourage class interaction and develop childrens
ICT skills by allowing them to use the interactive stylus to follow your instru
ctions. i-flashcards The access to the i-flashcards for the unit is located in t
he corresponding Students Book pages. The i-flashcards can be used to practise al
l four language skills in a very user-friendly way. You can decide which functio
ns to use depending on your specific needs:
Show a picture and ask the chil
dren to name it or ask them to use the interactive stylus to identify one of the
pictures. All the pictures are placed at the bottom of the screen to make them
easily accessible.
Click on the text button to show the written form and p
romote reading skills.
Click on the audio button to hear the word and practise
the correct pronunciation.
Give the children the interactive stylus and as
k them to write or copy the word.

i-story cards Click on the story on the Students Book page to access the i-story
and use the numbers at the top of the window to move from one vignette to anothe
r. Click on CLOSE on the top right-hand corner to return to a full-page view. Th
e i-story cards provide an alternative way to present the story to the whole cla
ss. You can decide whether you want to show it with or without the text. Use it
without audio or without text for you, or the children, to retell the story in y
our own words. i-posters The i-posters are located on the Students Book pages whe
re they can be used to present content or revise key concepts throughout the uni
t. The i-posters offer two interactive activities to present and to reinforce th
e key vocabulary from the unit in a different way. This flexible resource also p
ermits a wide range of extra interactive activities to evaluate or to expand the
course content using the IWB tools. i-activities The interactive activities fro
m the Beep CD-ROM have been included in the Teachers i-book. The access to these
activities is located on the Students pages, where they can be used to present, r
evise or reinforce key concepts from the unit. For more information about these
interactive activities and the way to make the most of them using the IWB, pleas
e read the Beep CD-ROM section. The interactive board games in the review units
can be used to revise the term core content with the whole class. Roll the inter
active dice and move the counter to the corresponding square. Ask the children t
o answer the question. Alternatively, you can form groups and ask each group to
answer taking turns. The use of the clock tool from the IWB specific tools is al
so a good way to make the revision more challenging for the children and it also
allows them to stop and think before they answer.
How to manage your teaching sessions The Richmond i-books now offer the possibil
ity of saving all your teaching sessions. This allows you to customize your i-bo
ok for each of your classes, session by session if needed, in order to meet ever
y class needs individually. You can create one or several sessions, as many as yo
u need, export and import sessions in order to use them on different computers o
r edit sessions you have already created at any time! Once a session is created,
you are ready to work with the i-book and customize it using the Richmond i-too
ls . You can insert notes, hyperlinks, or external files as well as add handwrit
ten notes. All the information added to the i-book session will be automatically
saved to your computer. You dont need to quit the i-book to refer to different t
eaching sessions. Click on
on the left hand side of the bottom menu to acc
ess the session registration window at any time. Access to the session registrat
ion window is only available from the main bottom menu. Once you are working wit
h a book, this is the location to access the Richmond i-tools. The Richmond i-to

screen. Most activities also include a final screen with animations to review th
e key concepts presented in each exercise. One of the activities in each unit is
based on the CLIL section from the Students Book. The children expand their inte
rdisciplinary knowledge through extra listening and reading comprehension activi
ties. Each unit contains a digital version of the Beep story and a listening or
reading comprehension activity. The digital story is an excellent tool to attrac
t the childrens attention. The story runs automatically to facilitate its project
ion. Play and pause facilities are included. The possibility of moving to differ
ent vignettes is also available. Children can see the results for all the intera
ctive activities they have worked with. The progress reports can also be printed
and given to the teacher. The CD-ROM contains a screen to listen to all the son

The YLE and Trinity test The Cambridge Young Learner Exams are designed for chil
dren aged from seven to twelve years old. Normally, they are tested in their own
school environment or an exam centre, and the exams all follow the same format.
There are three levels: Starters, Movers and Flyers. In terms of grammar and le
xis, the Flyers level is on par with the KET exams. The difference is that, unli
ke the exams for older students, children cannot fail the YLE. Every participant
is given a diploma with badges in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The
badges are coloured in depending on the success of the candidate. Exams follow
a very set format. The children never write on the exam papers, rather they answ
er on an answer sheet, usually with one word answers. They are tested in groups,
except for the Speaking session, where the test is given individually. Tips
When doing the practice exams it is best to recreate similar circumstances as w
hen the children will do the exam themselves. Allow them the same amount of time
and have them practise exam techniques.
The ESOL web site has an abunda
nce of exam tips as well as practice activities and information about the exams.
The Trinity Examinations in Spoken English are one-to-one oral examinations with
a native English speaking Trinity examiner, which test a students speaking and l
istening skills. The exams provide an official recognition of a students level of
spoken English and are accepted by universities and employers worldwide. Candid
ates must be aged seven or over. The examinations are divided into a series of 1
2 oral exams which test the students general conversation and ability to discuss
prepared topics. The exam grades range from absolute beginner level to near nati
ve fluency. Apart from being a recognised metre of a students skills in English,
the examination also works as a motivational tool encouraging children to practi
se and try to communicate in English. Tips
In each English lesson, ask gen
eral questions such as What day is it today? Whats the weather like today? Is it
spring or summer? How old are you?
Encourage full answers whenever asking
questions. T: What day is it today? SS: Tuesday. T: Its Tuesday.
When asking que
stions, if a child does not know the answer, encourage them to say: I dont know,
I cant remember or Im sorry, I dont know the word in English, rather than remaining
silent or saying err.
Make question practice fun. Do it in the form of a team
quiz and award points.
Practise for the exam in regular, short sessions so can
didates become more confident with the style of question and can answer more rap
idly and naturally.
When choosing a grade for candidates, consider the chil
ds personality as well as their level of English. A shy child with a good level o
f English, may not do as well as a more outgoing child who speaks more spontaneo
usly. Encourage the children to ask questions too. From Level 2 onwards they
are expected to ask the examiner questions.

TURTLE ISLAND, BALI Turtle Island is in the south of Bali, Indonesia. It is a ve
ry small island covered in white sand. The Turtle Conservation and Education C
entre (TCEC) is here. To get to Turtle Island, you travel from the mainland in a
glass bottomed boat. When you look down, you can see all the exotic underwater
life. At the Turtle Conservation and Education Centre, there are tiny houses, ca
lled hatcheries, where the turtle eggs are buried in the sand. When the baby tur
tles are born, they are put into pools. The baby turtles are released into the s
ea two weeks later, and visitors to the island can go and watch this process.

Real Kids DVD term 1 Laura: Hello, Im Laura and this is Moorlands Farm. The kitch
en is the busiest place in the house, especially in the mornings. There are five
of us living on the farm: my mum and dad, my brother William, and my little sis
ter, Emily. Moorlands Farm is 1,100 feet above sea level, on Dartmoor in Devon. I
often help Dad on the farm. These lambs were born two months ago. And every mor
ning before I go to school I come out and feed them. That ones Rory and that ones
Benji. My favourite is Benji because hes really sweet. Our main produce on the fa
rm is sheep. And because the sheep are spread over a wide area, we need to have
sheep dogs to help gather them in. Weve got four on the farm. Theres Jep, Bell, an
d Gayle, and Ben who hasnt been very well but hes getting better. After breakfast,
Dad gets on with his work and me and William set off for school. My school is P
rincetown Primary in Princetown, which is about three to four miles away. Each m
orning, I walk from my house, down the lane to the bridge, where the school bus
picks up me and William. The bus comes to pick us up at half past eight. We the
n pick up Sam and Harry who live on the next farm which is about two miles away.
We get to school by ten to nine. Sometimes in the winter when theres lots of sno
w, the minibus isnt able to come and get us. Last February I had three days off s
chool! There are 113 children in our school and they come from a 10 mile radius.
We dont travel the furthest but we do live in one of the most isolated areas.

Real Kids DVD term 2 Grandad: Right. Were off to the mountains. Boy: I enjoy goin
g to the mountains to ski, but to look at animals... nothing lives there. Granda
d: What do you mean nothing lives there? Just have a look: birds of prey, goats,
foxes, hares, mouflons, llamas... Now, lets travel across mountain ranges around
the world. Boy: It looks scary there. Whats that? Its got a tail. Grandad: That l
ooks like a snow leopard. They live high in the mountains and its lying in wait f
or the mountain goats. Boy: I think that one has noticed! Grandad: All the anima
ls in the mountains have thick, shaggy fur to keep warm. Heres a llama again. Lla
mas are used to the cold and snow. People use their wavy fur to weave warm jumpe
rs. Boy: Wow! A real avalanche! Grandad: Thats what happens in the mountains. The
mountains are dangerous because the weather can change very quickly. What beaut
iful flowers! Boy: Are there ponds in the mountains, Grandpa? Grandad: No, but t
here are mountain lakes formed by melting ice flows during the summer. Boy: They
look like cows. Grandad: Theyre called yaks. Boy: That little one is having a dr
ink of milk. Boy: That little red bird is the same colour as the flowers we saw
earlier. Grandad: Up here its beautiful, but down in the valley, the clouds are f
orming. Boy: Theres a newborn llama! That animal isnt afraid of heights. Grandad:
Those are mountain goats. Boy: Really? Grandpa, did you know that Im a goat too?
Grandad: Dont make things up. Boy: No, my star sign is Capricorn... the goat. Gra
ndad: This is a continental glacier. It flows at a rate of several metres per da
y. Boy: Per day? You cant even see it moving. Grandad: Well, it hardly moves at a
ll. Grandad: Oh, if I were younger, Id learn how to fly a glider so that I could
sail through the air like that bird of prey. Soon it will be dark. All the anima
ls will be going undercover. This mountain goat has to go slowly so it doesnt sli
p. Boy: Dont worry, Grandpa. Look, they can run really fast. Grandad: Well, I dont
mind as long as I dont have to join them. Boy: Its amazing how fast they can run
on those rocks. Grandad: It looks like there will be a snowstorm during the nigh
t. All the animals are crawling into their dens, burrows, or lairs. Anywhere to
keep out of the wind. So, its best we get somewhere safe too. Boy: Look at that m
ountain goat. He looks like hes keeping guard. Grandad: Ill be on guard, too. Just
like he is. If there are any avalanches, or if a bear should come by, Ill let yo
u know. Come along you little mountain goat, off to bed!

DVD script
Real Kids DVD term 3 Narrator: What do you think this well-known coastal land fo
rm is? As you can see, the rock has been subject to an immense amount of erosive
energy, causing these step-like formations. It was a cave. Lets look a little cl
oser at the way in which theyre formed. As you can see here, the waves slowly ero
de material from the bottom of the cliff. This causes a crack, or fissure, to oc
cur as the cliff becomes unstable. Slowly, as more and more material is eroded a
way from the base of the cliff, the crack opens up into a cave. As you can see h
ere, large amounts of material have to be eroded away to form one of these struc
tures. So it takes a succession of storm events and destructive waves to cause t
his sort of feature. Although caves can occur in any cliff face, the next featur
e that we are going to look at only occurs within a headland, a seam of resistan
t rock that juts out into the sea. Here, a cave forms as weve already seen, but a
s its on a headland, it can further develop into an arch as it cuts completely th
rough the rock. From here, the waves continue to erode the arch, and this causes
the top to become unstable and eventually, this falls and you end up with a cli
ff, and then a stack shown here on the right. However, this is not the end of th
e process, as from here, the erosive energy of the waves are concentrated at the
base of the stack and soon this too becomes unstable and the stack will topple
to form a stump.
