Unit 37 the functional musical keyboard and the use and applications of midi

Midi is an acronym for (musical instrument digital interface) which is a software which enables users to program music data into a DAW (digital audio workstation) by playing using instrument via midi it allows the user to apply a verity range of skills and sounds. Some of these DAW’s consist of…

For example when you play in a piece of work into your DAW you can change many features some of these being: the instrument, effects, the velocity, pitch, oct aves and many other options which can change not only the sound but the timing of the piece. This is widely used for the average musician, which allows them to easily program in other instrument from the comfort of their own homes. This is a great positive from using midi because it allows many people to make professional sounding music with out then need of an aucestra and other musicians. There are many musical applications while using midi which benefit the user in many different ways here are some of t he beneficial ways which midi can enable users to create professional music.

When using midi you have to have a DAW, which you will base your piece on and the software, which I would recommend and personally use is logic. When opening logic up you want to open a new document and select software instrument, which allows you to utilize your midi keyboard to select different instruments. Once selecting software instruments you can add as many outputs and you want, which then allow you to drag and click di fferent instruments into these tabs.

To select an output you will need to go to the top right hand side of the screen and look for a icon which says media . Once you have selected media you will go along to liabry, which is the 3 rd tab across.

Recording via midi

Once you have selected a instrument you will want to record it, to do this make sure you have the “r” button which stands for recode selected then proceed tot he recording guttin on the bottom of the control panel it looks like this.

hee you can see that I have played a melody using via midi. Once you are happy with the melody you have played in there are many ways you can alter the section of work you have played In. one of these vial alterations you can make toy our piece is to quantize . This is where you take the melody and make sure it is in time. This is a great advantage because it allows all of what you play to be in time and allows the piece to flow.

To start double click onto the piece you have played and you will see this.

While using logic you can also add affects to the melody by searching the mid left hand side and double click on an empty tab to get the effects selection it should look like this …

Midi was founded in the late 70’s/ early 80’s and came out of the combination of analog synthesizers being made compatible and the transition to digital synthases, which allowed the product to be controlled from one score. This later lead to midi being used and then becoming increasingly available to the wider public.

Midi keyboard

The midi keyboard has multiple functions, which make it easier to use. One of these being you control your sequencer b ut using buttons on the keyboard

These knobs you can assign to do different functions, which allow you to not have to go onto the sampler every time you want to change something this makes it a lot faster, and simper

Whilst siting at a midi keyboard it is important to maintain posture whilst playing otherwise because you will be spending long periods of time at a midi l=keyboard slouching which will give u a bad back will shorten the amount of time you will be able to work because of the posture. To maximize the amount of time you will be able to spend at a midi keyboard make sure that you keep upright with both legs situated of the flood and make sure you are near the keyboard with makes finding the notes a lot easier to play.

There are many different midi keyboards, which allow you do different things depending on the amount of money you are willing to spend. Some of the more high end midi keyboards feature weighted keys which give you a feel of an actual piano along with various types of software which you can link u your midi keyboard to which allows you to record. Also some of these keyboards come with DAW’s pre installed on a disk so that you get free copies of recording software. Also you can have different len gths of midi keyboards ranging from short 25 key midi keyboards to a full 88 fully weighted keys. Futhermore some come with built in pads with velocetys and pressure sensitive.

Additionally you can also get some witch are footswitch compatible allowing the user to use both hands all the time and also changing presets with there feet. You also have pitch benders and modulation wheel with most keyboards which bend the pitch of the notes both sharp and flat giving you more options whilst playing.

Midi can also change the presets which would be helpful for example when playing in a live band you would program al of your presets before you start a gig

and then during a gig you would change the presets on a foot switch which works via midi. This also shows that midi is designed to shorten the amount of time something would take and how easier it makes a musicians life. Many amplifier company’s use integrated midi in there amps like Marshall with a innovation amp with has midi programmed into it called the JVM410 and the JVM210. Also other amplifier brands use midi as part of the way the am works and line 6 do this very well by allowing the tonal charteristans of the amp be changed by presets via midi. This amp is called the line 6’s DT25 and DT50.

Also you can control lots of other scores ia midi for example lighting so a production can be all controlled via midi also festivals lighting and sound t controlled via midi which makes starting up a lot easier because all the lighting can be controlled from one score which allows.

How is midi messages within Logic software

Midi can be minupliate in many different ways with in midi one of the most basic ways to manipulate midi messages is to quantize your work this allows the user to make sure everything is in time. This manipulates what work you play so that is can all be in time to the click track in the background or other backing tracks.

Before and after midi

Before midi was around many people used tape machines, which in a way reflected an artist in a true light without all of the manipulating someone’s voice in a way to make them sound good. In a way with out midi there was more talent shown through tracks because there was no way of changing sometimes voice the only modification they had was to combine takes and the way by stopping the tape and draw a white l ine in pen and then use a razor blade to cut the take then get the other tape which you want to combine it with and add them two together by an additive which then will leave you with two takes combined to gather. However now midi is around it allows more talent to be discovered and allows budding young artists a chance to make it in the music industry. Also this opens more doors and makes it easier for many others. One example of this instead of having to record a full orchestra live costing time and money instead now you have a full orchestra in front of a computer screen giving the opertny for others to access sounds which they were not able to access before creating a ticker sounds track which in all sounds more professional and more complete. If midi wa s around 50 years ago or more we would of defiantly seen a big change in the was music was written. If this technology was around back then we would of noticed many of the older bands who have influenced many of the profeonal musicians today would maybe not be making music. However if midi was around then we could of seen a lot more artists who were revolutionary and maybe seen more people like Elvis , Jimi Hendrix and many more influential artists. Also if midi was around today we would of seen less viraty in the music business because the people who have mad the music industry what it is today had done because they were good and maybe with the use of midi we would of not seen

such a growth of music in the 60’s when “rock and roll” was one of the most comm on music trends in this time hence the saying “the swing 60’s”

Another thing, which is really handy when it comes to midi and DAWS, is that when you make a mistake on midi you can either re record the whole thing again or go into the piano roll with allows you to see the note you played wrong and add in the correct note or just mute the note.

Here you can see that the note is muted so that it incorrect note is still there if you do in any way want to alter it. But so that you know the note is muted it comes up in a dull grey colour.

To conclude I feel that working wit h midi is a real positive because it is somewhat cheap and saves buying big bulky analog equipment and allows someone to easily work on the go and it is very portable and quick to setup. Midi allows people who work at home to create a professional sound without a huge budget and also promotes the younger sound engineers a change to get a start at the industry someone whishes to work in. midi also allows people to have a huge verity of sounds and these are assessable at any given time. Midi also allows further development to take place in the further because with new and improved DAW’s being launched all the time the midi keyboard will also progress. We have already seen that midi has not just advanced from music but it can do jobs from lighting to amps which run via midi to pedals boards which run using a midi system. The possibilities are endless with what midi could eventually do. Which I would like to see in the future would be voice activation via midi. This will enable people who are disabled a chance to mak e and produce music. With this advancement I think that not only again making it easier for the user but it will capture another market which will show in the further by a more varied music.
