s revolution possible in Britain?
Judging by rst impressions, it
seems unlikely. Both Labour and
Con-Dem governments have got
away with driving down our standard
of living, privatising our welfare
state, and dragging us into a series of
catastrophic wars.
Its true people are angry about their
lives, and asking big questions about
how society should be run. But so far
the main beneciaries of this mood have
been the racist Tatcherites of UKIP!
Teirs is the politics of fear and
scapegoating. To counter it, we need a
politics of hope and resistance. Russell
Brand is great at articulating that feeling.
Glimpses of resistance
We keep getting glimpses of resistance
in Britain. Te student protests in 2010
rocked the government. Te Occupy!
movement sparked a massive debate
about how we could reorganise society.
Te campaign for Independence in
Scotland had the leaders of the austerity
parties quaking in their boots.
And the joint strikes by hundreds
of thousands of workers in defence of
pensions, pay and public services has
shown the power of our side to bring
Britain to a halt and to derail our
rulers austerity drive.
Taking on the 1%
But too often the potential of these
movements has not been fullled.
For one reason or another, they get
diverted, they fragment and they lose
momentum.
We believe we need to link up all the
dierent strands of resistance, so we can
learn from each other, develop a united
ght back, and forge a network of
grassroots activists who are able to stop
the ocial leaders from ignoring our
democratic will.
We think that our side is in it together
IS REVOLUTION
POSSIBLE IN BRITAIN?
As Russell Brand calls for an uprising...
against the 1% who are using the crisis
to enrich themselves at our expense.
We agree with Russell Brand that
revolution is necessary and that the
biggest obstacle is the belief that it is
impossible.
Revolution today
Te Socialist Workers Party are
revolutionary socialists. We believe that
capitalism itself is the problem that
it will always put prot before people
and has to be overthrown.
But we dont just dream about this.
We also take practical steps to increase
its likelihood. Tat means supporting
every act of resistance to exploitation
and oppression, big and small like this
months strikes by NHS and St Mungos
workers.
We encourage you to come to our
meetings to continue the debate sparked
by todays screening, and see what you
can do to bring about revolution in
Britain.
