AfricanUnionpeacekeepershaveconductedafreemedicalcampforresidents
intheportcityofKismayo.

ThefreeconsultationstookplaceatthemainAMISOM(AfricanUnionMissionin
Somalia)baseinKismayo.Over100localsincludingwomen,childrenandmen
weretreated.Thepatientsweresufferingfromavarietyofailmentsincluding
malnutritionandarangeofinfections.

Thereisalittlebitproblemmalnutritionbetweenthemsoweareheretohelp
them,atleasttoexplaintoeverybodyhowtomanagetheirdailythings,toprotect
themselves,especiallyyoucanseealotofUTIsurinarytractinfection,said
GarabedJeokdjian,aphysicianthatsupportsAMISOMmedics.

Kismayosresidents,likemostpeopleinthetownsandvillagesofsouthern
Somalia,weresomeoftheworstaffectedbydecadesofinternalconflict.
ExtremistgroupAlShabaabblockedhumanitarianaidfromreachingpeoplein
theregion.

SomaliasgovernmentwiththesupportofAMISOMpeacekeepersnowhave
theAlQaedalinkedgroupontherunmakingitpossibleforpeopletoget
muchneededassistance.

MedicsfromAMISOMsKenyaDefenceForces(KDF)workedthroughtheday
toexaminepatientanddispensefreeantibioticsandotherdrugs.

AMISOMisdoingincredibleworkandwearereallyhappybecausetheyhave
alsomadeitpartoftheirworktohelpthecommunity.Theytreatverypoorpeople
whocantaffordmedicaltreatment,likewomen,childrenandtheelderly.Weare
verygratefultothemandwewillalwaysrememberthesupportAMISOMgives
us,saidDr.AhmedMohamedHajjifromtheInterimJubaAdministrations
MinistryofHealth.

JointforcesmadeupoftheSomaliaNationalArmyandAMISOMtroopsrecently
capturedthestrategictownofBulaGadudtownabout30kilometersnorthof
Kismayo.
BulaGadudhasbeenagatewayforAlShabaabmilitiawhouseditasabase
forspringingattacksonKismayoanditsenvirons.
