Bringing Economic Vibrancy to Bukit Beruntung
BUKIT BERUNTUNG (March 9, 2012) Tesco Malaysia today officially launched its Superstore and organised an official visit to its
Ambient Distribution Centre at Bukit Beruntung (TADC) led by the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, His Excellency Simon
Featherstone.
His Excellency was joined by the Secretary General of Domestic Trade, Co-operative and Consumerism Ministry, Dato Saripuddin
Kasim and Tukiman Nair, President of Hulu Selangor Municipal Council.
The TADC, which is the hub for optimal storage and logistics of ambient goods which include grocery, electronics, high tech and
apparel, is one out of two state-of-the-art distribution centres that services Tescos 45 stores all around Peninsula Malaysia.
SungHwan Do, Tesco Malaysias Chief Executive Officer said that Tesco invested more than RM260 million to develop the TADC
and that it reflected on Tescos long term aspiration to significantly grow the business in Malaysia.
Our investment towards a central distribution system is a reflection of our steadfast commitment toward a more efficient and
greener supply chain. This ultimately would create better value to our customers and our many local suppliers, said Do.
During the tour of the TADC, Tesco showed how the high tech facility cuts down delivery cost and time to the end-users by nearly
half, which translates into higher transparency in its supply chain and lower prices for customers.
Furthermore, this efficient system enabled Tesco to reduce its carbon footprint by as much as 17% due to there being fewer
vehicles on the road to deliver goods to stores.
Do also pointed out how the Tesco Ambient Distribution Centre and Superstore have helped to make a difference to the lives of the
community in Bukit Beruntung and its surrounding areas with more job creations, a growing population, more residential and
commercial development and a thriving economy.
Following the opening of the TADC in 2009 and most recently the Tesco Bukit Beruntung Superstore in 2011, Tesco have noted
the economic liveliness that is evident given the growing population, housing areas, the sprouting shop lots and small businesses
in Bukit Beruntung, said Do.
The TADC and Superstore employs over 700 Malaysians in various semi-skilled and skilled positions ranging from cashiers to
bakers to logistics experts and managers.
The efficiency of our overall distribution networks helps make it better, simpler and cheaper for our 1500 suppliers, of which more
than half are local Small and Medium Enterprises. This allows us to meet the demands and benefits our 3 million customers that
we serve weekly throughout the country, said Do.
