When Republicans took the majority in 2011, we were dealt a bad hand of cards: North Carolinas unemployment rate was the fourth highest in the nation at 11%; Businesses were shutting their doors; The federal government shoved the Affordable Care Act down our throats before we could even tell what was in it; Our state was $2.5 billion in debt; Our state retirement system was underfunded; Our state health plan was near bankruptcy; Teacher salaries were frozen; and, Teachers were being furloughed; When we took the majority, North Carolinians expected us to merge our state off the economic stagnation highway. I believe we have done just that, and new employment numbers prove it. Just in the past four years weve made significant reforms that will move our state in a positive direction. Republicans cut taxes for ALL North Carolina families and businesses o We cut taxes for every North Carolinian at every income level, despite the misleading claims that we only cut taxes for millionaire yacht owners; o We reformed taxes to one flat rate by reducing the state personal income tax rate from 7.75 percent to 5.8 percent; o We cut the corporate tax rate from 6.9 percent to 5 percent to encourage businesses to relocate or stay in North Carolina;
