Knowing
BY JOSH STEIN
Josh Stein has been in the Napa wine business for more than a decade, and, in
addition to being owner/winemaker of the Stein Family Wine Group, which
produces a nationally and internationally distributed portfolio of wine brands and
donates a percentage of its sales to the children of wineworkers in the form of
college scholarships and support funds, he regularly consults for wineries and
organizations throughout the North Bay and Coast via their subsidiaries, Discrete
Wine Support Services and SF-Integrated Vineyard Management Services.

POSEIDON VINEYARD
& OBSIDIAN RIDGE
Enjoy a Unique and Relaxed Wine Country Experience
BY BONNIE ZIMMERMAN
A visit to the Poseidon Vineyard & Obsidian Ridge Tasting Room at the
Cornerstone Gardens in Sonoma is a true delight. From wind-swept
vineyards by the San Francisco Bay, to lofty Red Hills of Lake County,
Poseidon Vineyard and Obsidian Ridge produce some exceptional wines that
reflect the differences in these two distinctly different terroirs.
Guests are welcomed by a warm, friendly and experienced hospitality staff
where visitors can and can taste wines from both exceptional vineyard for
only $10 per person, or purchase wines by the glass.
For a special afternoon, plan ahead and reserve a 90-minute, private, indepth educational tasting experience. With a taste of Poseidon Vineyard or
Obsidian Ridge wine in hand, a staff member will introduce guests to the
beautiful and unique gardens of Cornerstone as well as adjacent vineyards
with an educational walkabout (weather permitting). Then enjoy a
comfortable fireside chair or a seat on the festive deck as the staff takes you
through a tasting of allocated, reserve and special library selection wines
accompanied by a selection of artisanal cheese. This private tasting is $40
per person and reservations are required in advance.
Arpad Molnar, co-founder and managing partner about his thoughts on
making wine, he stated, The quality of the wine we make really reveals the
incredible quality of the people that work together to make it. It sounds
simple, but we want to make really good wine.
They have succeeded and it is because of their passion for wine and some
incredible properties.
Poseidon Vineyard is at sea level, at the confluence of Carneros Creek and
the Napa River. Maritime fogs appear daily, blown in by cooling Pacific winds
and burned away again by the generous California sun. The river swells with
salty water at high tide. Here, on the lip of the San Francisco Bay, the family
has grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes to supply exceptional
California wineries for over forty years. Even after four decades of farming,
this undulating, gravelly bayside terrain continues to inspire exploration and
discovery.
Obsidian Ridge is planted at the highest part of the Mayacamas
Mountains, rising from 2,300 to 2,640 in elevation and range from 5 to 20%
slopes. Wines of elevation are coveted for their rarity, intense dense flavor
profiles, and aging capability.
A visit to Poseidon Vineyard & Obsidian Ridge is a must for adventurous
wine lovers where guests can spend the afternoon on the deck, by the
fireplace, in art-filled gardens or over a game of bocce, while enjoying the
hand-crafted character of single-vineyard wines.

We are elated that Chef Masanti is boarding this cruise, said Tom
Davies, President of V. Sattui Winery. Stefano has become a good
friend of our winery and our customers. He understands our Italian
heritage, our love of good food and wine, and how to make a
gathering of friends and family memorable. This is going to be a
culinary adventure of a lifetime.
Davies met Masanti six years ago at Il Cantinone while vacationing
in Madesimo. The relationship has grown and, in 2009, 2010 and
2014, Masanti traveled to the Napa Valley to present a cooking
demonstration and prepare a six-course dinner for V. Sattuis annual
Harvest Ball.
V. Sattui Winery is a family-owned property located in the heart of
Napa Valley, that was founded in 1885 and makes more than 60
different wines with dozens of 90+ point rated wines among its
current vintages. It is a stunning, must-see Napa Valley destination
for picnics, weddings and events, offering an impressively robust
Cheese Shop with more than 200 selections. Executive Chef Gerardo
Sainato and his staff create mouthwatering salads, sandwiches,
paninis and entrees in the Deli. V. Sattui also makes house-cured
meats from its own Salumeria, and gelato and sorbetto from its own
Gelateria. The sprawling estate includes two-dozen picnic tables
nestled beneath ancient Valley Oak trees and tri-level terraces that
overlook beautifully manicured gardens and vineyards.
V. Sattui Director of Winemaking, Brooks Painter, was recognized
as Winemaker of the Year at the San Francisco International Wine
Competition in June of 2013, and in 2014 V. Sattui was named
Winery of the Year for the third year in a row at the Winemakers
Challenge. This marked the tenth time in the last decade that the
Winery has been given that honor at a major national competition.
In addition, V. Sattui garnered Best Winery in the Bay Area for the
third year in a row in the San Francisco Bay Guardian 2014 Readers
Poll.

November means its time to celebrate Americas natural bounty. For food and wine lovers,
this includes celebrating the fall harvests of our countrys talented winemakers. Each year a select
group of these vintners commemorates their feat at Vintners Holidays, a nationally renowned
wine festival held in one of the most beautiful places on Earth Yosemite National Park.
Marking 33 years in 2014, Vintners Holidays brings authentic winemakers not sales reps
together with Yosemite guests for a top-shelf event featuring good times and great wines.
Whats even more special about the experience is that all the action takes place inside the
legendary AAA Four-Diamond Ahwahnee hotel in the heart of Yosemite Valley.
The idea for Vintners Holidays was inspired by Californias plentiful vineyards and the
winemakers who tend to them with self-sacrificing devotion. Guests choose from seven sessions
that run from November 4 to December 4 and are treated to an intimate welcome reception with
the sessions vintners, a series of wine-tasting seminars and a divine five-course gala dinner.
Executive Chef Percy Whatley and The Ahwahnees culinary team design the custom gala menu
to pair perfectly with each sessions featured wines. Not only is the atmosphere stunning, but the
flavors are equally world class.
Each year, this event attracts more than 25 talented winemakers who are crafting some of
Californias finest wines. Youll find iconic labels such as Silver Oak and Rombauer sprinkled
throughout the sessions. Another fine example, the first session of 2014 (November 46)
welcomes Bill Phelps of Joseph Phelps Vineyards, maker of Insignia, Wine Spectators Wine of
the Year in 2005. Nearly forty years after the inaugural vintage, Insignia is still recognized as one
of the worlds great wines.
Session two (November 9-11) features the renowned winemaker Mike Chelini, who has been
with Stony Hill Vineyard since 1977, making him the longest-tenured winemaker in Napa
Valley.
For the third session (November 12-13), The Ahwahnee is excited for the return of Daniel
Baron and David Duncan of Silver Oak Cellars. Silver Oak Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon has been
called the crme de la crme of the heady red and is consistently met with critical acclaim. It

vines come from, and what they offer, Hess farms sustainably and
conducts their business in a sustainable manner.
The Hess Collection was among the first of Californias wineries to
embrace and become a member of the California Sustainable
Winegrowing Alliance and was one of the first to receive certification
in the Napa Green Winery program. Dave oversees soil management,
water conservation, erosion protection, integrated pest management,
raptors and the use of goats to clear brush in the springtime. Hess
currently has a small flock of about 100 goats that are released in the
vineyards just prior to bud break to help with weed control and to
minimize the use of tractors. Hess also takes a lead in green
packaging, production and in every-day business practices.
The Mount Veeder wines that Dave creates are some of the best in
the world. The 2010 Hess Collection 19 Block Mountain Cuvee
received 93 points from Wine & Spirits Magazine and 90 points from
The Tasting Panel. The 2010 Hess Collection Cabernet Sauvignon
received 92 points from Wine Spectator and 91 points and a Cellar
Selection from Wine Enthusiast.
At the forefront of sustainable winemaking and crafting incredible
wines, Dave Guffy has established a precedent that raises the bar in
wine country.

Founded in 1992, today Frank Family owns 380 acres of the finest vineyard land
in Napa Valley and has one of the biggest word-of-mouth followings in the wine
country. First constructed as the Larkmead Winery in 1884, the historic stone

Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Sonoma County, who provide highimpact youth development programs to over 3,000 children each day
after school throughout local communities.
Weve brought in more than 100 of the best Pinot Noir producers
on the West Coast. These are incredible wines, that in many cases
you cant find in the marketplace. It will be extraordinary day for
Pinot Noir enthusiasts and local communities as we come together to
raise money for Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Sonoma County, said
Eric Hall, Co-Founder of Pinot on the River and owner of Roadhouse
Winery.
Pinot on the River begins with the Grand Tasting at 11 a.m. for
early-entry ticket holders, and noon for the public. Featured wineries
include Roadhouse, Papapietro Perry, Failla, Siduri, Kanzler
Vineyards, Littorai, Paul Hobbs, Sea Smoke, The Donum Estate and
Patz & Hall. Guests will have the opportunity to purchase these
excellent wines and others through the silent auction, hosted by Boys
& Girls Clubs of Central Sonoma County. They have also put
together an exclusive instant wine cellar that will be raffled off

ARMIDA WINERY
Putting the Focus on What Matters: Great Wines
and Fun Times in Healdsburg and Capitola
BY JOSH STEIN
56
Armida Winery is the product of two brothers vision, and fittingly enough, it
combines two seemingly disparate wine goals with aplumb. For two decades, Steve
and Bruce Cousins have been making vineyard-designate wines, generally a fairly
serious business, but they have also tried to produce good humor along with their
great wines, and to that end, they have created not one but two fantastic spots to
enjoy their range of releases in relaxed, carefree comfort.
Surrounding the winery itself is the Armida Estate, the seven-and-a-half acre
hillside vineyard the brothers acquired in 1994 and replanted in 2000. This was a
unique piece of land in that nothing had ever been grown on it; the hillside was
gently contoured for erosion-free drainage, and an extensive system of
subterranean tiles and drainage pipes were installed. Because of their heritage and
the particular Mediterranean-like growing region of this southern tip of the Dry
Creek Valley, the Cousins brothers decided to plant an Italian field blend
composed of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Carignan, which are all picked at the same
time and co-fermented to create an opulent, dense and structured wine that has
been nick-named Il Campo and which harkens back to Sonoma Countys wine
roots.
If the idea of a true field blend straight out of the nineteenth century isnt
enough to pique your interest, there is plenty more to taste, too. The winerys
vineyard-designates include bottlings from a whos who of North Coast
winegrowing greats: Bacigalupi Pinot Noir, Castelli Knight Pinot Noir, Durrell
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Gaps Crown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Gold Mine
Zinfandel, Maple and Maple Tinas Block Zinfandels and Parmelee-Hill Pinot Noir

Located in the beautiful town of Glen Ellen, deep in the heart of Sonoma Valley, B.R. Cohn is
a must-see destination for lovers of history, music, fine wines and exceptionally crafted artisanal
olive oils. Surrounded by the ninety-one acre Olive Hill Estate Vineyards, this picturesque spot
offers stunning views, great wines, vintage architecture and a lovely picnic area.
The tasting room is housed in a beautiful 1920s home which will take guests back to the
Great Gatsby era. B.R. Cohn offers tastings of their award-winning wines and artisan olive
oils daily and tours by appointment. Reservations are recommended for groups of eight or
more.
For the serious oenophile, B.R. Cohn offers an unprecedented opportunity to taste some
incredible wines from their Wine Library tasting through the history of the iconic Olive Hill
Estate Vineyard. Hosted by a knowledgeable staff member, the experience includes tastes of
five magnificent Cabernet Sauvignons, including four monumental vintages ranging from 1994
to 2001 and concluding with the most recent Olive Hill release. This tasting lasts ninety
minutes and costs $50 per person and is well worth the price. Reservations are required in
advance.
The winery offers visitors additional options when visiting the property. Be sure to bring a
picnic lunch and enjoy the outdoor patio and share a bottle of B.R. Cohn wine while taking in
the beautiful views this estate has to offer. No lunch? The Gourmet Shop is available for guests
to taste B.R. Cohns line of gourmet olive oils, barrel-aged hand-crafted vinegars, and find the
perfect charcuterie to pair with a bottle of wine on the patio.
60
www.WineCountryThisWeek.com
The tasting room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with tours
offered by appointment. One of the most popular experiences is a
guided tour covering the winery history and visiting the grounds,
learning about B.R. Cohns rock and roll roots, visiting the French
Picholine Olive Grove, and concluding with a tasting of awardwinning wines. This tour runs daily on the hour, and costs $20 per
person. Reservations are required in advance
A visit to B.R. Cohn will definitely be the highlight of any visit to
Sonoma. With its lush, intense, fruit-forward wines, the history of the
estate, the roots of rock and roll and hand-crafted gourmet olive oils,
vinegars and gift items it offers something for every wine country
visitor.
