EFFECTS OF COMICS ON SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNERS READING

COMPREHENSION.

ABSTRACT

This action research aims to study the effectiveness of comics in enhancing pupils reading
comprehension levels. The respondents were a class of mixed-ability students and the study
focused on 5 students who were selected randomly. The comics used were given in the form
of series of pictures. The study used qualitative methodology through three lessons in the
classroom. Data was collected through non-participant observation, semi-structured
interviews, and document analysis. All the data was then categorized, analysed, and
triangulated before conclusions were drawn to answer the research questions. The implication
is that comics can be recommended to be used in the teaching and learning in ESL classrooms
to enhance pupils reading comprehension, promote more meaningful learning besides
encouraging pupils to participate more actively and have fun during the language learning
activities.














THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PICTURES IN IMPROVING PUPILS
UNDERSTANDING ON ADJECTIVES AMONG YEAR 4 PUPILS

ABSTRACT


The primary aim of this research is to explore the effectiveness of using pictures in improving
pupils understanding on adjectives among Year 4 pupils. This research has been conducted to
find out whether using pictures during teaching and learning session will affect pupils
understanding on adjectives. The research has been designed to find out whether the usage of
pictures could be an effective technique in improving motivation and memorization among
pupils in learning English language. The research has been conducted on pupils who have
intermediate level of proficiency in a school in Pendang. In order to achieve the purpose of
research, all twenty-one Year 4 Bestari pupils have been chosen. The research has been
carried out through an experiment, in which the subjects in the experimental group were
exposed to using pictures in order to improve their understanding on adjectives. The research
instruments are questionnaires, tests and observations. The data collected will be analysed
using qualitative method. The subjects were given pre-test which tested them on adjectives;
followed by post-test after they have been taught using pictures. The results of both
experimental and controlled groups have been compared through a table based on a
qualitative approach. Through the result, statistically significant difference between the
performances of the two groups has been indicated. It would be concluded that pupils who
received worksheets with pictures improved in their understanding of adjectives.













USING NURSERY RHYMES TO ENHANCE LISTENING AND SPEAKING FOR
YEAR FOUR BIJAK SEKOLAH KEBANGSAAN KAMPUNG BARU PENDANG

ABSTRACT
This research examines the issue of listening and speaking skills lesson in the classroom. The
focus of this study is on enhancing listening and speaking skills by using nursery rhymes. The
title is Using Nursery Rhymes to Enhance Listening and Speaking Skills for Year Four in a
Rural School. The aim of this study is to prove that a nursery rhyme is an effective medium
to be used as a stimulus to stimulate pupils response during listening and speaking lessons.
Nursery rhymes with visual elements function to stimulate pupils cognitive to think and
relate between the stimulus given with the story line. This study involves 5 respondents from
Year Four Bijak in Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Baru Pendang. They consisted of two
female and three male students. They are chosen based on their intelligent level. Four types of
instruments have been used in this study which is an initial and final test, questionnaire,
observation and interview. Based on findings discovered from this research, it has been found
that nursery rhymes have been effective in enhancing the responses of the students in aspect
of their listening and speaking skills in a classroom lesson.















THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING BIG BOOK APPROACH IN SHARED READING
ACTIVITIES IN MOTIVATING YEAR 3 PUPILS TO READ ENGLISH BOOKS

ABSTRACT

The main aim of this research is to determine the effectiveness of Big Book Approach in
reading aloud activities in motivating Year Three pupils to read English book. Specifically,
this research will investigate to what extent the effectiveness of the Big Book features, such as
the content presentation contribute to the development of students word knowledge. The
research is designed to find out whether this approach can be an effective tool in creating
positive attitude and motivation in language learners to read English books. The research will
be conducted through an experiment, in which the subjects in the experimental group will be
given the Big Book. The research instruments are questionnaire, observation and
interview.Questionnaire and interview have been analyzed using a qualitative approach of
descriptive statistics. This research has shown that features from the Big Book Approachhave
successfully improved reading motivation of participants. For further improvement,
participants need to learn new words and emphasize on reading skills. Groupwork or
individual approach can be employed in further teaching of the English subject, particularly in
the field of reading as well as listening and writing.

PERMISSIONS IN ENGLISH CORRECTLY IN THE CLASSROOM FOR YEAR

ABSTRACT

Asking simple permission correctly during teaching and learning session in the
classroom is considered as the basic knowledge which should be acquired by all pupils. But
for those who learn in the rural area, they found it is not easy as it said especially the ones
who have low proficiency level in English. Various methods and techniques had been
implemented in order to induce this compulsory knowledge in every pupils. This researchs
objective was to find out the effectiveness of using role play in helping pupils to ask simple
permission in English correctly in the classroom. This research was conducted at Sekolah
Kebangsaan Padang Durian, Pendang, Kedah. It involved pupils from Year Three Gemilang.
The data was collected through questionnaires, pre-test, post-test and observation. Researcher
also had used Quantitative and Qualitative methods in order to analyze the collected data. The
findings had proven the use of role play could help the pupils in asking simple permission. It
was also preferred by the pupils because it involved more kinesthetic activity which required
the participants to move around during the lesson. Lastly, the use of Repetition technique
helped the pupils in memorizing the sentence patterns of the selected sentences. These
findings will benefit the teachers and the pupils in choosing the best alternative to teach the
pupils to ask simple permission correctly. The findings also had been analyzed and discussed
and some recommendations were suggested for future researchs improvement.











THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING NURSERY RHYMES TO ENHANCE
PRONUNCIATION

ABSTRACT
This action research reports on the effectiveness of using Nursery Rhymes as the
sources in improving English pronunciation in ESL classroom. To learn speaking skill,
students must learn pronunciation correctly because the wrong pronunciation causes the
meaning to change. Unlike adults, children will get bored and distracted easily in learning,
especially for primary ESL classroom. Based on the children characteristics, the researcher try
to introduce English language especially teaching pronunciation as interesting subject for
them because studying pronunciation need more than one sources of language. The sources of
language may be from media like song, picture, from native speaker etc. In this action
research, the researcher decided to use songs as the medium or source of learning and
improving pronunciations. Therefore, specific songs which are suitable for children in
learning language are nursery rhymes. Nursery rhymes are also commonly known as children
songs or traditional songs which have certain message for children. Brown (2006) states use
of traditional songs, stories and nursery rhymes in the ESL classroom can create an excellent
learning experience for the ESL student. In addition to the cultural value, traditional songs,
stories and nursery rhymes may help with pronunciation practice and literary skills. For this
reason, the researcher chooses to conduct an action research to use nursery rhymes to improve
students pronunciation skill in ESL primary classroom. The data collection methods that
were used were qualitative and quantitative. In addition to offering pedagogical suggestions,
the researcher discussed results in some theories including cognitive theories.











THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING MULTISENSORY APPROACH TO TEACH
DOLCH PRIMER SIGHT WORDS TO YEAR 5 REMEDIAL PUPILS TO ENHANCE
READING SKILLS

ABSTRACT
The purpose of the action research was to determine the effect of using multisensory approach
to teach Dolch primer sight words in order to enhance the reading skills of the pupils. Hence,
these researches focus on how the use of multisensory approach can enhance the Dolch sight
words for a betterment in reading skills. The instrument for pretest and posttest were the
Dolch sight word primer list. Twenty words were selected from a collective list of unknown
Dolch sight words. This research was administered for one month. A posttest was
administered to collect data on learned Dolch primer sight words after one month. Pupils of
Year 5 were chosen as participant for this research. Six pupils of Year 5 were chosen as
respondents for this research from 18 pupils. The main purpose of choosing these pupils is
because they are remedial pupils. The school where this research was carried out is Sekolah
Kebangsaan Guar Kepayang, Pendang. It is a primary school located in the rural area of
Pendang, Kedah. A qualitative approach was adopted and methods used to collect data were
pre test and post test and observation. The finding from the tests and observation provide a
better understanding on how the uses of multisensory approach to teach Dolch primer sight
words as a medium to enhance the reading skills among the respondents. The result showed
significant gains in Dolch primers sight words by using multisensory approach in enhancing
the pupils reading skills.












THE USE OF SYLLABIC GAMES TO IMPROVE YEAR 4 PUPILS OF SK CHAROK
KUDONGS SPELLING SKILL.

ABSTRAK
Spelling with the right pronunciation and syllabic sound is the most important in English
language. it is a fundamental aspect of language learning for all emergent readers as they are
entering kindergarten and first grade. The question is what is the best way to learn spelling
with the right syllabi sound? This action research looks at how language games can aid
learning with right syllabi sounds. The purpose of this research is to find out the use of
Syllabic Games in Enhancing Spelling In Year Four Pupils of SK Charok Kudong. The aim of
this study is for the intermediate level pupils of Year 4 Cemerlang. A pre-test and post-test
has been conducted on the respondents in this study. In addition, a short questionnaire has
been administered to find out the pupils and teachers opinion on the use of games to
improve pupils spelling. The study has involved pupils from the intermediate level lass with
low achievement in English. Since the study has been based on the experimental design,
respondents have been equally divided into controlled group and experimental group. Data for
this study has been collected through three different sources. The findings have been analyzed
in frequencies and percentage, tabulated and presented in forms of graphs and tables. The
finding of this study has revealed that the Experimental Group has improved in spelling after
the test conducted.











THE USE OF SONG AND S-V-O TABLE TO IMPROVE PUPILS WRITING
SIMPLE SENTENCES

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research is to find out the use of Song and The Subject-Verb-Object
Table In Improving Pupils Writing Of Simple Sentences. This study involves Year 5
pupils SekolahKebangsaan Guar Kepayang, Pendang, Kedah. A pre-test and post- test
have been conducted on the Experimental Croup and Controlled Group to collect data.
The study involved 18 pupils fromremedial class with low achievement in English
Subject. Since the study is based on experimental design, respondents have been equally
divided into two groups which areExperimental Croup and Controlled Group.The data has
been collected through three different sources. The methods that have been used were
Respondents Profile, Pre-Test, Post-Test and Observation. The findings have been
analyzed in numerals, frequencies and percentage, tabulated and presented in forms of
graphs and tables.The findings of this study revealed that the Experimental Group has
performed better than theControlled Group. This meant that by using Song and Subject-
Verb-Object table, the remedial pupils are able to write simple sentences.









THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING CHIDRENS ACTION SONG TO IMPROVE
YEAR THREE PUPILS UNDERSTANDING ON ACTION VERBS

ABSTRACT

The usage of childrens action song as one of the teaching and learning resource in
teaching English is one of the innovation in producing interactive and fun learning
environment. This action research shows on how childrens action song has been used in
enhancing pupils understanding on action verbs. The researcher tried to use the childrens
action song during the learning and teaching session through singing and demonstrating the
actions that are involve the action verbs. Then, the researcher will revise the lesson again to
check on the students understanding. The research was conducted in a school situated in
Tokai, Alor Setar and involved ten students from Year 3 Bestari as the respondents. The
research has been done around four weeks. There are three instruments that have been used in
collecting data throughout the research. The instruments were unstructured observations,
structured questionnaire and tests on action verb s understanding. Besides that, the researcher
also analyse the respondents exercise books and their monthly examination results. As for the
result, it can be said that the research showed positive improvements as the respondents were
able to write most answers correctly through the test that has been conducted.












THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEACHING ENGLISH DIALOGUE THROUGH
ROLE PLAY AND THE PUPILS SPEAKING DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT

Learning to speak in English has become an important need. This reality make teachers think
that speaking skill should be mastered by their students. For that reason, role play provides an
opportunity to demonstrate how to use English in real situations and make participants focus
more on communication than on grammar. Oral presentations like dialogues are a great way
for participants to practice their English skills. Therefore, this paper attempts to investigate
whether teaching English dialogue through role play affects students speaking development.
The participants include two pupils from one of the schools in Pendang. The research has
been conducted on pupils who have intermediate level of proficiency. The research
instruments are questionnaires, pre-test and post-test. A pre-test has been given to
participants. This has been followed by application using role play. After the treatment,
participants have been tested again (post-test). The data of this research have been collected
by using measurement technique that was a performance test to measure students
achievements. In this experimental survey, the findings have shown that respondents who
have received the treatment demonstrated improvement in speaking skills. In addition, results
have also shown that the students enjoyed role play activity and did not find it too
challenging. From the findings, it has been suggested that teaching English dialogue through
role play is an effective technique in promoting students speaking ability.











THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING SCRAMBLED LETTER GAMES IN
MOTIVATING YEAR FOUR PUPILS OF SK CHAROK KUDONG TO LEARN
VOCABULARY.

ABSTRACT

Language is being the way to transfer an idea, thinking, opinion and feeling. On the other
hand, motivation is one of the essential factors in language learning. Thus, in order to enhance
learners learning of vocabulary, they need to be motivated to play a game or to complete a
task and with the enjoyment achieved, learning occurs smoothly. This research involved Year
Four respondents from one of the school situated in the Pendang, Kedah. Early observations
show that the respondents were lack of vocabulary. They put less effort in learning
vocabulary.This action research shows how thefun of English vocabulary games can help the
respondentsto build their English language vocabulary skills. There were vocabulary word
games for all levels of English. This research involved four instruments on collecting data.
They are through observation, questionnaires, recording and test which arepre-test and the
final test. Pre-test is done for teacher to identify pupils level of ability or in the other term,
we can say as the diagnostic test and the final test is for final observation for the teacher to
know the pupils progression in learning after the application of the selected method.As for
the result, it can be said that the research showed positive improvements when they learn
vocabulary using the scrambled letter games. The respondents were able to learn the target
vocabulary and memorized them in another lesson.It can be new experience for them in
learning English so that their speaking achievement can be better.










THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING DRAWING TO IMPROVE YEAR 2
PUPILS ABILITY TO REMEMBER VOCABULARY

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the action research was to determine the effect of pupils drawing on their
ability to remember vocabulary learnt. Vocabulary is fundamental for the learning of English
language. Hence, this research focuses on how to use drawing to help pupils remember
vocabulary taught. The participants used were of year 2 primary pupils. Pupils of year 2 were
chosen as participants of this research because they are of the age group where it is suitable to
carry out fine motor skills activities to facilitate learning. The research was carried out within
a month. The school where this research was carried out is Sekolah Kebangsaan Pendang. It is
a primary school located in a town area in Pendang, Kedah. Drawing was chosen as an option
to help pupils to enhance their ability to store the vocabulary learnt in their memory due to the
interest shown by pupils towards drawing activities. Most of the pupils were seen more
inclined to be involved in tasks that engross art-based activity. A qualitative approach was
adopted and methods used to collect data were pre- and post- tests, observations and
interviews. The findings from the interview and the observation provided an opportunity to
explore and better understand how pupils drawing can be used as a medium to enhance
vocabulary learning. The findings emphasized the need to value childrens drawing and to
provide them with the opportunity of using drawing in their learning process.













USING STORYBIRD TO IMPROVE PUPILS ABILITY IN WRITING SIMPLE
SENTENCES

ABSTRACT

This action research has been carried out to improve pupils writing skills using visual aids
from Storybird; a free programme available online. The participants for this research are
composed of 10 pupils from year 5 Bestari in a school around the area of Pendang in
Kedah.Preliminary investigation through the March test showed 6 failures in the English
subject. The writing paper showed the lowest scores among pupils. This research has been
carried out to help each participant write with strategy and focuses onbuilding descriptive
sentences which are made up of simple sentences. Three instruments have been employedin
data collection . They are questionnaire, interview and observation. Questionnaire and
interview have been analyzed using a qualitative approach of descriptive statistics. This
research has shown that visual stimulus from Storybirdwith the Ask Me technique has
successfully improved writing skills of weak participants. For further improvement,
participants need to be taught on how to organize their ideas in writing. Groupwork or
individual approach can be employed in further teaching of the English subject, particularly in
the field of writing as well as listening and speaking.













THE USE OF CROSSWORD PUZZLES TO ENHANCE VOCABULARY LEARNING
IN ESL PRIMARY PUPILS.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this research was to investigate the use of crossword puzzles to enhance
vocabulary learning in ESL primary pupils. Most ESL primary pupils have problems in
vocabulary where they have insufficient vocabulary bank to help them in learning the four
language skills. Pupils also have problems in remembering the vocabulary taught during
lessons. During the investigation, the participants were taught and given tests using crossword
puzzles to enhance their learning and memorisation of words. This research was designed
using the Experimental Design. Two pupils from Year 5 Utarid were the participants from
average achievers in English. The rest were the control group. The data was collected through
quantitative instruments which were tests and questionnaires. The data was analysed in
numerals, percentage, frequency, and mean. The findings of this research support the
hypothesis of the study which proved that using crossword puzzles was able to enhance
vocabulary learning in ESL primary pupils.














THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING SONGS IN TEACHING PREPOSITIONS OF
PLACE AMONG YEAR 3 LOW ACHIEVERS FROM SEKOLAH KEBANGSAAN
BUKIT RAYA DALAM, PENDANG, KEDAH.

ABSTRACT


This action research aims to investigate the effectiveness of using songs to teach
Prepositions of Place for Year 3 pupils of low achievement in a school located in Pendang,
Kedah. The respondents of this research consist of 3 pupils from Year 3 Usaha. After a
session of lessons which incorporated English songs and a variety of tasks to use Prepositions
of Place, data was collected through tests, non-participant observations, semi structured
interviews and document analysis. The findings of this research indicate that there has been
improvement in pupils ability to use Prepositions of Place after the intervention. The
intervention has also successfully promoted active participation among pupils during the
language learning sessions which could have also contributed to their enhanced abilities to use
Prepositions of Place correctly. Songs should thus be integrated into teaching and learning
to enhance pupils understanding of grammar point besides enhancing the acquisition of
second language in a more fun and meaningful manner. This intervention thus is
recommended to be carried out over a longer period of time to effectively improve pupils
understanding and enhance their participation in English lesson.












THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PHONICS TO IMPROVE SPELLING SKILLS
OF YEAR 2 PUPILS

ABSTRACT

The main aim of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of using phonics to improve
pupils ability to spell one and two syllable English words that is nouns. This research involves five
year 2 pupils with poor spelling skills, who had been selected through purposive sampling. English
spelling is without a doubt a complicated matter in which many interrelated skills are involved and
learners around the world have trouble getting the letters right. Phonics activity can help to increase
letter/sound recognition. Based on the data collected through interviews, observations and
document analysis, it has been found that the teaching of phonics has positively impacted pupils
ability to spell one and two syllable English words besides enabling them to participate more
actively in the language activities. The intervention can be recommended to be used by ESL
teachers over a longer period of time to effectively enhance pupils skills in spelling of nouns and
other vocabulary.














THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING DOTTED LINES TO IMPROVE PUPILS
HANDWRITING OF SIMPLE SENTENCES

ABSTRACT

The main aim of this research is to determine the effectiveness of using dotted lines to
improve pupils handwriting of simple sentences for year 2 pupils. Specifically, this research
will investigate to what extent the effectiveness of using dotted lines can improve pupils
handwriting of simple sentences. Purposive sampling has been used to choose the pupils
based on the level of penmanship. The respondents in this research were eight pupils
consisting of seven boys and one girl. The research has been conducted using the dotted lines
methods which are firstly, dotted lines of alphabetsand secondly, dotted lines of aphabets with
three lines papers in order to write simple sentences neatly. The research instruments were
observation, document analysis, semi-structured interview, questionnaires and initial and the
final tests. The data has been analyzed using reports and ratings. The findings show that the
pupils handwriting of simple sentences have improved using the dotted lines. Through this
research, it has been found that using dotted lines will assist the pupils in constructing simple
sentences as well.
