LISTEN TO MUSIC
One major myth is that music is
multi-tasking. The fact is that a
special part of our brain is
chalked out for
music, so we can
listen to music while
we do other things.
Giving credence to
the finding that a
human brain is not
engineered for multi-
tasking is the fact
that word itself did
not originate
because of human
behaviour. It is a
term coined in 1965
to describe a
computer's ability to
process several tasks
at one time. But ever
since it came to be
used to describe
people who undertake several
activities simultaneously, it has
given rise to some myths as
well. One of them being that
women were better at multi-
tasking, although research
proves that there's not much
difference between the sexes. It
is also said that the Gen Y were
better at multi-tasking, while
experts specify that they're good
at only `media multi-tasking'.
WHY WE MULTI-TASK
1. It gives an emotional boost
and a positive feeling. You feel
more emotionally satisfied from
their work when you multi-task.
2. It makes you more satisfied
because of a combination of
activities. For instance, watching
television, while studying makes
studies more entertaining and
gratifying.
3. Habits play an important role
in the use of media multitasking.
Once you get used to multi-
tasking, it makes you more likely
to continue. It's what experts
call a dynamical feedback loop.
If you multi-task today, you're
likely to do so again tomorrow,
further strengthening the
behaviour over time.
People who attempt many
chores at a time are not being
more productive, they just
derive emotional satisfaction
from it, says research. May be
it's time to now get back to
the one-task-at-a-time mode
Emptying your e-mail inbox while
answering that urgent business
call, or preparing a presentation
while sipping on a cup of coffee
and watching funny videos -all at
the same time -
might make you
feel on top of the
world. However,
doing multiple
things at one time
makes you less
productive, and
successful, say
productivity gurus
who have deemed
single-tasking the
new multi-tasking.
American
researcher Clifford
Nass found that
people who multi-
task don't really
develop a high
working memory,
nor do they get
better at filtering information. It
turns out multi-taskers are
terrible at every aspect of multi-
tasking, he states. People who
multitask a lot are in fact a lot
worse at filtering irrelevant
information and also perform
significantly worse at switching
between tasks, compared to
single-taskers.
MULTI-TASKING
COMPROMISES MEMORY
People show poorer performance
on a variety of tasks when they
try to juggle multiple media
sources at the same time: for
example, going from texting a
friend, to reading a book, to
watching an online video. It also
hampers memory as the simul-
=taneous processing of tasks is
so tough on the brain. Often,
when we multitask, the brain
switches attention back and forth
between activities. Such task-
switching comes at a cost in
performance, according to San
Francisco based neurologist
Adam Gazzaley, who studies how
attention and memory change as
people age. While studies show
multi-tasking compromises your
ability to store information over

SINGLE-TASKING IS THE
SOLUTION
As the name suggests, single-
tasking means doing one
activity at a time with as few
distractions as possible. As long
as you keep focus front-and-
center and do your best to
minimise distractions, you'll be
getting at the heart of single-
tasking. It also means that you
celebrate having less, because
you recognise that what you do
have is what's most important
so you can find happiness,
fulfillment and freedom.
3 TIPS TO ACE SINGLE-
TASKING SINGLE-TAB
BROWSING
Limit yourself to only keeping
one internet browser tab open
while working. That way, you
have to really prioritise the most
important task. This habit lets
you work through your online
tasks one by one. If you are
writing something on a
document, close all the tabs and
focus only on writing.
PLAN IN THE EVENING
Every evening, sit down in a
quiet place and write down what
you want to complete the next
day. Make a simple to-do list for
the next day. Don't leave this till
the morning. If you can't
manage to-do lists, enlist a
friend to brainstorm for 10
minutes to walk you through the
tasks of the next day. Instead of
just writing tasks down, you will
be forced to think through them
and explain them to someone

We've all heard of "The 7 Habits of Highly We've all heard of "The 7 Habits of Highly We've all heard of "The 7 Habits of Highly
Effective People," but what are the Effective People," but what are the Effective People," but what are the
behaviors that the most successful people behaviors that the most successful people behaviors that the most successful people
have in common? have in common? have in common?
We covet the success of CEOs and entrepreneurs,
from Steve Jobs and Sheryl Sandberg to Beyonc and
Jay Z. Some people seem to have it all, as if
everything they touch turns to gold. Think back to all
the people youve met who have been highly
successful in life: What do they all have in common?
You might say their success is due partly to education,
age, timing, or luck. In reality, people who are
successful in both business and life all adhere to these
seven key practices:
1. Positive thinking : Successful people realize that
their mentality can affect all aspects of their life,
including success. Researchers have found that
positive thinking opens people up to developing new
skills, which can have a compounding effect among
happy people who repeat this process. For example, if
you start a habit of running for enjoyment and then do
well in a marathon, youll take that happiness to fuel
learning how to rock climb (and then take that success
to move on to something else, and so on). Positive
thinking can also have numerous health benefits:
People who practice positive thinking have been shown
to have increased life spans, lower rates of depression,
greater resistance to colds and disease, and better
coping skills during stressful periods.
2. Having clear end goals : In the hit TV show
Scandal, professional reputation-repairer Olivia Pope
always asks her clients one initial question: What do
you want out of this? Pope starts with their end goal
in mind, and then works backward. Likewise,
successful people take ownership in their own future
by picturing what their intended outcome is first, and
then working toward that. Instead of concentrating on
hitting your sales goal for the month, for example,
focus on becoming the top earner on your team.
3. Taking calculated risks : People like Steve Jobs
didnt become wildly successful by playing it safe.
Successful people know that taking riskswithin
certain boundariesis absolutely necessary. They
know failure is a viable option, and that they can learn
and grow from their mistakes. And finally, they know
that if you always reach for the easy, low-hanging
fruit, youll never succeed in climbing to get the larger
prize on top.
4. Learning from other successful people : Most
successful people surround themselves with mentors
and positive influencers who help keep them focused.
They recognize that they can benefit from the wisdom
and overall aura of other successful people who
forged their own way through the trenches of life. If
you work on building and maintaining connections with
professionals you admire, it will increase the likelihood
that they will invest in you in return.
5. Building real relationships : You cant be
completely successful without working well with
others. Successful people show respect to others by
listening and responding to ideas and criticism, and
finding solutions that work for (almost) everyone. They
dont get too caught up in life or work drama that can
bog them down, and they dont take things too
personally. Through contributing to the success of the
team, they realize theyre contributing to their own
success.
6. Managing time efficiently : Everyone knows the
saying time is money. Highly successful people realize
that their time is worth something, and that
prioritization is important. That may mean they value
their time enough to pay someone to do something for
them, so that they can devote their time to something
else.
7. Never stop learning : Youll notice that highly
successful people love to read, and crave learning
more. They are always absorbing more information
they can apply to their lives and careers. This
knowledge helps them constantly adapt and evolve.
merger. These programs provide counseling, family
workshops and stress management workshops.
Individual coping strategies like exercises, relaxation
techniques and behavioral self-control can help to deal
with stress and anxiety. Intervention techniques like
meditation and yoga can be implemented. Healthy
communication network and interpersonal relations can
also help in reducing stress and anxiety post merger
Social Policy- Policies should be undertaken which
would cater to the post merger stress and anxiety.
Policies should be drawn up regarding cross cultural
training and developing specific management and
administrative program to minimize the ambiguity
during transition period can help in focusing on to the
positive effects of mergers. Policies intending mergers
should be more transparent so as to avoid rumors or
grapevine communication that might intervene during
the process of merger. Process of merger calls for
special policies needing special interventions to be
designed for employees health and welfare.
Mergers and Acquisitions are in true sense the need of
the hour. Its increasing relevance has made the
organizations to realize that they cannot wish them
away. Therefore, the behavioral scientists have an
important role to play during the transition to be better
able to cope with the mergers of the organizations.

Mergers: Need of the Hour
I
n recent times the phenomenon of globalization in
Indian economic scenario has increased quite a lot.
Mergers are an integral part of globalization. A
merger refers to the process whereby at least two
companies combine to form one single company. It is a
combination of two companies where one corporation is
completely absorbed by another corporation. Mergers
have been reported in automobile, telecom, retail, IT
and all other major sectors of Indian industry. The
augmented focus on FDI and FII has inspired many
branded foreign companies to invest in India. Taking
into account this scenario company mergers are gaining
momentum. Not only are the MNCs merging with
Indian companies but several mid size companies of
India are making a mark outside India. The reason for
Tata-Jaguar merger was that Tata Motors wanted to
have their presence felt in foreign markets. It desired to
have a diversified line-up ranging from the
world's cheapest car to some of the more expensive
luxury car segment. The IT sector is increasingly
known for their mergers. One of the well documented
mergers was done by Essar Groups Aegis Ltd. with an
Argentinean BPO named Actionline.
In India, the economic effects are generally
acknowledged but the psychological effects which the
employees encounter are not sufficiently documented.
Among the psychological problems faced, stress,
anxiety, absenteeism, turnover, low performance,
organizational commitment etc. are very prominent in
the western studies. The modern organizations are
increasingly facing complex, dynamic and unpredictable
operating environments due to mergers. These turbulent
economic, social and political forces increase
competition, stress and anxiety transforming the
environment of firms. The acculturative stress in
mergers can be ameliorated.
There are many a possibilities for exploring the role of
personality, leadership, organizational citizenship
behaviour, employee engagement and other factors
influencing the employees during and post merger. The
role of Human Resource Department is no more limited
to the conventional functions like recruitment and
selection. They have varied roles to play to make sure
that the transition phase is treaded effortlessly.
The most important considerations would be-
Planning- It could be in the wellbeing of the
organization to seriously pursue setting up of a
dedicated unit to aid the employees going through the
process of merger in that organization. Employee

The 21-Day Desk-Free Challenge
A decade ago I never would have imagined a day
in my business life when I would not have needed
a fax machine. In the real estate world, it's all
about contracts and paperwork and transacting
business with people in hundreds of different
communities. But now technology has replaced
my fax machine along with my typewriter and my
watch.
Five months ago I looked around my office and
wondered, "What else will become obsolete?"
Perhaps by getting ahead of the curve I could
eliminate things in my business that were holding
me back from building a more efficient empire. As
I looked around my office one day, the one
noticeable item that seemed pretty obsolete was
my desk. I opened the drawers to see what was
inside.
There were files from old conferences that I had
attended. There were old boxes of business cards.
Basically my desk was full of old files, memos and
correspondence. My desk had become a
receptacle for stuff that should have been thrown
away but for seem reason I hadn't do so. Five
months ago, I challenged myself to living without
a desk.
It's been said that it takes 21 days to create a
habit. So right off the bat, I decided to not visit my
office for 21 days. I own a large real estate
business with sales offices throughout
Massachusetts. Instead of going every day to my
personal office (where my desk is) as I usually did,
I chose to start living out of my briefcase and
visiting all my sales offices.
It started off as a 21-day challenge, but it wasn't
hard at all. Now five months have gone by and I
can count on one hand the number of times I
have visited that old desk of mine. I work from
conference rooms, coffee shop corners and
reception areas. When I need to make a private
call, it's not so hard to find a little spot
somewhere to do so. Living desk-free has been a
game changer.
Here are the five lessons learned from living
without a desk:

interviewers to be more sensitive are some
measures that progressive companies have
adopted. "Interviewers are trained on the
methodologies of competency-based inter-
viewing. This results in greater sensitivity. We
also conduct periodic training sessions for our
recruitment partners," says Ashutosh Telang,
Chief Human Resources Officer at FMCG firm
Marico.
S.Y. Siddiqui, Chief Mentor, at Maruti Suzuki,
stresses that all interviews are conducted within
the company's corporate policy framework.
"Thus, policies on equal opportunity or non-
discrimination on the basis of caste and religion
are adhered to during the interview process as
well," he says.
At equal opportunity company Accenture,
everyone, including the differently-abled or
those from the LGBT community, is encouraged
to apply. Interviewers go through an extensive
training process, which also sensitizes them to
certain nuances," says Manoj Biswas, Managing
Director, Human Resources, Accenture.
Recently at an interview, a visually impaired
candidate was given the right cues so that he
could take part in the group discussion that is a
part of the inter-
view process. "The
interview panel
also had one HR
manager who was
a specialist on
aspects of dis-
ability inclusion,"
adds Biswas.
A few laws do
protect inter-
viewees against
potential discrimi-
nat i on. "For
instance, The Equal
Remuneration Act,
1976, provides for
equal pay for the
same work. Under the Protection of Civil Rights
Act, 1955, employers are prohibited from
discrimination on ground of untouchability.
Laws are more stringent when the government
or its agencies - like PSUs - are the potential
employer. Here, Article 16 of the Constitution
guarantees 'equality of opportunity in matters
of public employment," explains Raghavan.
However, even if prospective employers do
misstep, it's almost unheard of for an inter-
viewee to take a private company to court.

E
ven in these politically correct times, Indian
employers continue to quiz applicants
about age, religion, political preferences and
even sexual orientation. "They kept asking
repeatedly, 'What is your marital status?' 'What
are you marriage plans?' I wanted to tell them
it's none of your business but obviously couldn't
say it" - Candidate for a job as a German
language analyst at a Chennai-based MNC
"Being a female in a predominantly male-
dominated industry, how would you handle a
subordinate or worker in the factory who does
not obey you?" - Question to a candidate for
the post of an assistant manager in a Pune
engineering company.
A job interview is tough enough without having
to dance around intrusive questions. But
instead of staying focused on the skills required,
many Indian employers still stray into the
personal lives of applicants or betray biases. A
look at glassdoor.com or any other India-centric
job website where candidates post their
interview experiences anonymously reveals
some really inappropriate questions from
employers.
Age, religion, community, political preferences
and even sexual orientation - very little is out of
bounds. Queries
such as "When did
you graduate from
college?" or "I love
that accent. Where
are you from?"
smack of dis-
crimination. Such
questions would
invite lawsuits in
European Union
countries and the
US. Sherri A
Affrunti, Partner,
Employment prac-
tice, at global law
firm Reed Smith
LLP, says that
questions about age, gender, religion, ethnicity,
sexual orientation, familial status, disability, and
pregnancy are prohibited by anti-discrimination
federal, state and local laws in the US.
If a job so demands certain questions can be
posed to 'all' the candidates but not a select
few, explains Affrunti. For instance, "How many
children do you currently have, or plan to
have?" is a question that cannot be asked. But if
the job requires frequent travel, all candidates
can be questioned on their willingness and
ability to undertake it.
What encourages this attitude is the lack of
legal barriers to intrusion. There is no specific
law in India which prohibits private employers
from asking personal questions in recruitment
interviews," says Ajay Raghavan, partner, at
Trilegal, a law firm.
That's not to say that awareness isn't growing in
India. "Today, companies are increasingly
becoming more politically correct. But whether
the thought process itself has changed is still
debatable. Some companies do express concern
about the possibility of a female candidate
taking a long maternity break," admits K
Sudarshan, regional managing partner, at EMA
Partners International, an executive search firm.
Cultural nuances in India are also different.
Casual questions on family background are
considered ice-breakers. "But, there is greater
awareness that such questions could result in a
bias, and the more sensitized companies are
advocating a cautious approach in the interview
process," says Priya Chetty-Rajagopal, ED at RDF
Executive Search.

Faith?
W
henever I ponder on the notion of
Faith I am fascinated by its rich
conception. How important is Faith
in our life? Is Faith intrapersonal or
interpersonal? Faith is inculcated in the initial
stages of development a child and becomes an
integral part of life which is present at all the
milestones of our life. Faith in oneself helps to go
beyond the boundaries and try new horizons. There
are many situations where a person has to tread his
own way without any external assistance. In such
an instance, it is the Faith in oneself that helps us
to overcome any difficult circumstances. Having
faith in oneself can aid in believing in ones
strengths and beliefs. It is not only oneself whom
we have to have Faith in but also other people like
family members, colleagues and friends who
become an integral part of our life. Even when we
acknowledge the fact that we would be acquainted
with few people only temporarily in our life then to
we constantly try building faith in them and make
others have faith in us.
Is faith situational or comes with time? According
to me it is both. The situation and the time both
play an important position. In military
establishment faith matters a lot. During a military
operation the lives of a group is at stake on the
leader. The group has to have faith in the leader
whereas the leader has to have faith in his
potentialities. Same goes for a Para-jumper who has
to have faith in his parachute and also a soldier
who has to have faith in his gun while in combat.
Here it is the situation demanding faith. Whereas,
in the case offending our personal belongings to an
old friend but reluctantly doing so with a new one
is the factor of time playing an important role in
keeping faith. In some cases our behavioral action
and interaction with others lays down the
foundation of faith.
Our behavioral action and interaction with others
also lays down the foundation of faith. Our
openness and genuineness help people to have
confidence in us. Even transparency and non-
biased decision making displays the amount of faith
people can entrust on us. For example to
incorporate a change in industrial setting if the
reason for change is justified by the person whom
we have faith in people support the change
positively. Similar cognitive paradigm also eases the
process of building faith. Apart from this, it makes
us feel worthy about ourselves when someone
shows faith in us which boosts our confidence.
Being a professional psychologist, incorporating
faith is part of ethos. The success of a psychologist
depends upon how well the faith is established with
the client. No matter how intense the problem is
faith can solve it by laminating regrets or remorse.
If the concept of Faith is often used as a synonym
for hope, trust or belief it should surely enlighten
the inner soul of oneself and help in finding the
way to Divinity.
I have stepped into the process of building
Faith, have you?

Corner :
Why Home-
work Matters
A
s an elementary/middle school teacher, I
hear constant complaints about the issue
of homework. There are valid points
against overdoing it and even studies that
suggest, in some cases, it doesnt always help.
Theres a big difference between busy work and
assignments that are meaningful. Some researchers,
like Sara Bennett and Nancy Kalish, propose that
homework is a hidden cause of childhood obesity.
Others, like Alfie Kohn, believe that the quality and
quantity of assignments done at home should be
addressed, pronto. So, why do students today still
have to do this archaic activity?
Although some teachers assign busy work, that is
not always the case. Often times, the assignments
students bring home are not only continuations of
what was done in class, but are activities that help
apply the knowledge learned earlier in the day.
Some at-home assignments are enrichment
activities that will nurture the creative side of
children.
It allows parents to see first-hand what their child is
doing in school, and gives them an opportunity to
connect or communicate with their child on a
different level, seeing where they stand
academically.
Even if its studying or reviewing what was covered
in class, it is an important reinforcement activity.
This can eventually lead to information being stored
into long-term memory.
Research conducted by Harris Cooper (2006)
suggests that students who complete homework
tend to have higher scores on content related tests,
than do students who have not completed content
related homework.
It can teach a child responsibility, which in turn will
form into a good work ethic that will be useful for
the rest of his/her life.
Time management skills will develop and students
will learn the valuable lesson about procrastination.
It will allow students the opportunity to teach
themselves, and learn how to manage schoolwork
independently.
Although there is an ongoing debate about the
merits and necessity of homework, the bottom line
is that it doesnt look like its going away any time
soon. Sure, parents should question teachers and
make sure that the homework is relevant and not
going to last five hours, but the best possible action
a student can take at the elementary age is to accept
its inevitability. This will lead to time management
strategies, allowing them to learn how to juggle a
variety of activities on a daily basis, just like parents
and all other adults do every day.
Studies at Duke University under Harris Cooper
found a positive connection between test scores and
homework. The results of such studies suggest
that homework can improve students' scores on the
class tests that come at the end of a topic. Students
assigned homework in 2
nd
grade did better on math,
3
rd
and 4
th
graders did better on English skills and
vocabulary, 5
th
graders on social studies, 9
th
through
12
th
graders on American history, and 12
th
graders on
Shakespeare. Of course, when it is overloaded,
theres the case of diminishing returns.
Life in the working world is more competitive than
ever before. Children need to learn the methods
that will allow them to be successful in the life
thats just ahead. Kohn suggests that homework
doesnt help elementary school students, when
research states otherwise. He is also a proponent of
eliminating grades. Kohns ideas generate excellent
debate topics, but are not practical in a world that
uses rankings for everything. So, even if you dont
buy into the fact that homework will make a child a
higher academic achiever in the short term (even
though research states otherwise), realize that it
just might create a human being with good habits, a
rich work ethic, and a success later on in the world
outside academia.

you cannot change what has already happened. Past
troubles can affect a person badly if he/she refuses to
move on. So forget the past, live in your present and
focus on your future. Moreover, your past mistakes can
act as a guide and teach you valuable lessons. At times,
the most tragic and stressful situations teach you the
best lessons in life. So learn from them and let your past
go.
5. HOLDING ONTO RESENTMENT : We all do it and
then feel too stressed to lead a happy life. Holding on to
resentment will simply intensify your hard feelings and
negative emotions, making you feel sad deep down. You
must learn to let go and forgive the other person for his/
her wrong behavior. If you can't forgive, at least stop
thinking about it day and night, and move on. You will
have a new sense of freedom and satisfaction when you
get the better of your pent-up anger and frustration.
6. ARGUING TO PROVE YOU ARE RIGHT : All of us
cling to our opinions, whether we are right or wrong.
There is nothing wrong in presenting your point of view.
But one must be rational and listen carefully to what
others have to say. A different perspective often helps us
get a broader vision and you must not ignore it just
because it may hurt your ego. Also, take things easy - it
is not mandatory to prove you are right during the
course of a heated argument. Instead, listen to others as
they voice their concerns and suggestions. After all, you
always have the choice to agree or disagree at the end of
it.
7. NURTURING HUGE EXPECTATIONS : Let go of
undue expectations - they can undermine your
happiness as you keep looking for life's little rewards
where there is none. Learn to accept people for who they
really are and forget what they can do for you. Once you
realize that your expectations cannot change the other
person, you can let go of false hopes and won't feel
disappointed. The sooner you realize it, the better off
you will be. Also, unmatched expectations often lead to
dissatisfaction. So just face every situation with open
mind and try to make the best of the existing
opportunities. Finally, don't force yourself to live up to
others' expectations. Just being yourself is the key to
happiness.
8. IGNORING PROBLEMS : Do not avoid problems.
Only those who are unhappy and scared ignore
problems and feel tense when they become worse or get
out of hand. It is always better to solve those issues in
the very beginning to reduce your stress level.
Otherwise, the stress and anxiety of knowing that
something is brewing and you are consciously avoiding
it will make you worried and miserable.

8 Things You Must Ignore To Stay Happy
H
appiness is a simple concept; yet, many
people don't realize it. We all want to be
happy but we search for it in wrong places.
Some people find happiness in
materialistic gains like owning a house, latest gadgets,
expensive cars and more. But sometimes, even the
biggest achievement of life does not make a person
happy. On the other hand, you will come across many
people who feel happy and satisfied although they have
not done anything significant in their life.
So what actually makes people happy? It is just the
difference in perspective, the way we see things. This is
the major difference between happy and unhappy
people. Happy people tend to ignore a few negative
things in life to stay happy while the unhappy ones fall
into those traps and remain miserable. Sometimes
people create their own problems and miseries by their
own action. Check out these 8 traps you should avoid if
you want to be happy in life.
1. GOSSIP : Gossiping about others won't do you any
good and will only make you feel jealous and bitter. A
person who gossips is the one whose personal life is not
fulfilling enough and he/she wants to know what is
happening in other people's life. People who are happy
and content always avoid this pitfall and focus on their
own life instead.
2. NEGATIVE THINKING : Thinking negatively is
bound to affect your happiness since you are focusing
on the gray areas of life, instead of positive emotions.
Negative things keep you worried and disturbed all the
time. On the other hand, happy people always approach
things positively and are optimistic in nature. They
always see the glass as half full while negative people see
it as half empty.
3. WHAT OTHERS THINK ABOUT YOU : One factor
on which you have absolutely no control - so try and
avoid it to stay happy. Don't ponder over what others
might be thinking about you. You can never alter
somebody's opinion. But if you spend too much time on
that and try to please all, you will eventually forget who
you truly are. So just listen to your heart and do what
your intuition is telling you. You need not change
yourself to impress or inspire someone. Just be yourself
and let others be inspired and impressed by your true
self.
4. REMEMBERING TROUBLES FROM THE PAST :
You must forget what happened in the past and how it
impacted your life. Do not think too much about it as

Business consultants can often perform an
invaluable service. But only, in the opinion
of Richard Branson, if they have plenty of
real world experience themselves to call
upon...
"Im always startled to hear about young people going into
consulting right after school, without having a lot of real-
world work experience under
their belt," explains the Virgin
Founder in a recent entrepre-
neuer.com blog.
"Making this sort of jump is
unparalleled in most profes-
sions. Imagine boarding an
airliner and learning that the
pilot at the controls has only
ever flown a flight simulator.
Youd be more than uneasy!
Similarly, there is a reason
that aspiring heart surgeons
spend years in operating
rooms assisting and observing
other surgeons before they operate on their own."
To pass muster as a consultant, Branson believes that
there are four questions someone must ask themselves
before throwing themselves into the role.
1. Have you ran your own business?
After launching hundreds of ventures across four decades,
I know first-hand that there isnt anything like hands-on
experience when it comes to running a business. When
starting out, the learning curve is steep, since you have to
master a variety of fields all at once - from supply-chain
management to marketing, to accounting, to customer
service.
I dont think any course of study can truly prepare an
entrepreneur to successfully handle all of these important
aspects of an enterprise.
So as a consultant, unless you are an expert in a niche
field relevant to a very specific consulting need, I would
expect you to have an abundance of entrepreneurial
experience. And this sort of experience doesnt come
down to merely understanding the nuts and bolts of the
business world - its also about having fundamental peo-
ple skills. Show me that you understand how to inspire,
motivate and lead others; this is the single most impor-
tant factor for success in business.
2. Have you experienced failure?
Failure is simply indispensable to the entrepreneurial
experience. At the Virgin group, I dont think wed be
where we are today if it hadnt been for the many small
and large ventures that didnt do as well as we had hoped.
Remember Virgin Brides? Or Virgin Clothes? These ven-
tures feature prominently on our list of epic failures - yet
they helped us to build better businesses.
The reason is a simple one: There is more to learn from
mistakes than from successes. Understanding what went
wrong, where instincts failed, or what internal and exter-
nal factors were responsible for
taking an enterprise off course
are all vital lessons in business.
Understanding the failures of
the past is key to having success
in the future.
3. Do you know a bad idea
when you see one?
In the case of Virgin Brides, our
failed entry into the wedding
and bridal wear sector in the
1990s, we jumped into a highly
competitive, crowded market
that we knew little about, and
our product failed to attract customers in the same way
that other Virgin brands had managed to.
We learned that when people are in the market for a wed-
ding dress, tradition prevails over Virgin-style, red-hot
disruption, so we werent the right fit (so to speak). In
many ways, we hadnt done our homework - and we also
allowed our overblown expectations to get the better of us.
4. Are you hungry for knowledge?
Businesses, markets and societies are constantly evolving.
When we started Virgin Records in the early 1970s, we were
living in an analog, fragmented world, selling vinyl records
that catered to niche musical interests.
Fast-forward four decades, and we are in a globalized,
interconnected business environment that has very little
in common with the world that Virgin was born into.
Global supply chains, electronic commerce, the arrival of
social media and changing demographics have radically
transformed the way that we do business.
For a consultant to be successful in this quickly evolving
world, he needs the ability to adapt frequently, a zeal for
lifelong learning and a willingness to embrace an even
greater degree of specialization than ever before. Just
think about the armies of consultants who have found
ways to make a living by working in search-engine optimi-
zation, social-risk assessment or stakeholder manage-
ment, to name just a few of the options.

Are you having problems about thinking too much about
your past or worrying about your future? Tried every-
thing including positive thinking and other tools and
techniques to get over it or stop over thinking but arent
able to bring about a permanent change? Then heres
something for you.
Did you know that the way you feel is based upon two
things
1. Your Body Language [Physical State]
2. Your Communication [Internal & External
Communication]
Today we are going to talk about the first one. Body
language accounts up to 93% of your communication.
Interesting, isnt it?
The Change in your PHYSIOLOGICAL State brings
about a tremendous Change in your PSYCHOLOGICAL
& EMOTIONAL State.
Did you know that the way you Feel Right Now is greatly
influenced by the Physical State you are currently in. A
small change or shift in your body, would bring a major
change in your thoughts, feelings and emotions. Now
lets start talking about how and what can you do to
avoid getting into feelings and emotions which make you
feel low and you cant seem to do anything except crying
or beating yourself up.
A successful person portrays the ultimate confidence and
the feeling of certainty and feeling powerful. Just model
or copy the exact same posture RIGHT NOW. Youll start
to feel even more confident, powerful and certain. Thats
the massive power of physiology. Thats Change in your
state.
Notice the next time you are low or feeling terrible,
youll have these few things in common for sure :
1. Head hung low
2. Sloppy shoulder
3. Spine wont be erect
4. Shallow breathing
Obviously there wont be any smile on the face. Now
when youve noticed this you need to simply change
these into these :
1. Head up, not exactly looking at the sky which would
make you look stupid but just a little above the
normal as if you are very certain and strong
2. Shoulders pulled up and fastened backwards a little,
exactly the way when you used to stand in an
Attention pose during your National Anthem
3. Spine Erect
4. Deep breathing
And one more very important thing you could do is wear
a smile on your face and realize that you are not the one
who is carrying all the problems and burden of the entire
world on your head. You could try to smile.
You might be thinking all this sounds good but HOW
would it help me? Well, just try these simple steps the
next time you feel miserable and see the change. The
above mentioned stuff is very powerful to bring about a
definite and major change in the way you feel.
Just by Changing Your Physiology, you can change your
Emotional State. Dont believe me? Try those steps right
now while reading this. Dont think now, Act and know
for yourself whether this works or not?
Thinking whether its that easy? Yes, it certainly is. Good
things are always kept simple and easy but we dont
know them or dont follow them.

too quickly.
7. If your child does not respect other people's feelings,
it is because instead of speaking to your child, you
order and command them.
8. If your child is too quick to anger, it is because you
give too much attention to mis-behaviour and you
give little attention to good behaviour.
9. If your child is excessively jealous, it is because you
only congratulate them when they successfully
complete something and not when they improve at
something even if they don't successfully complete it.
10. If your child intentionally disturbs you, it is because
you are not physically affectionate enough.
11. If your child is openly defied, it is because you openly
threaten to do something but don't follow through.
12. If your child is secretive, it is because they don't trust
that you won't blow things out of proportion.
13. If your child talks back to you, it is because they
watch you do it to others and think its normal
behaviour.
14. If your child doesn't listen to you but listens to
others, it is because you are too quick to make
decisions.
15. If your child rebels it is because they know you care
more about what others think than what is right or
wrong.
Change starts at home. Try a few if not all and see the
sea change in the relations. This can be true with the
close friends &relatives too.

SOME GOLDEN THOUGHTS TO PONDER SOME GOLDEN THOUGHTS TO PONDER SOME GOLDEN THOUGHTS TO PONDER
1. If your child lies to you often, it is because you over-
react too harshly to their inappropriate behaviour.
2. If your child is not taught to confide in you about
their mistakes, you've lost them.
3. If your child had poor self-esteem, it is because you
advice them more than you encourage them.
4. If your child does not stand up for themselves, it is
because from a young age you have disciplined them
regularly in public.
5. If your child takes things that do not belong to them,
it is because when you buy them things, you don't let
them chose what they want.
6. If your child is cowardly, it is because you help them

1. Building relationships :
Working without a desk has
enabled me to form more and
better relationships with my 250
real estate agents. They don't have to come out to headquarters and find
me behind my desk because I run into them at their offices when I spend a
couple hours or entire days working from a conference room. Now instead
of getting to know only a handful of people in my company, I've really
gotten to know hundreds of my people. My relationships have deepened
because I'm unchained from my desk.
2. Embracing technology : Life without a desk has forced me to embrace
technology. My old brown desk used to be filled with yellow sticky notes of
stuff to do. Those sticky notes have been replaced with cool technologies
like Ever note that organize my lists, remind me to do stuff and give me a
historical record of what I completed and when.
3. Feeling liberated : I've come to feel like a desk is nothing more than a
glorified trash receptacle. I no longer store stuff I don't need because I have

The 21-Day Desk-Free Challenge
Contd. from page 2
nowhere to put it. I take notes on my iPad at conferences. I scan business cards
into my phone. And all the other stuff gets thrown away or better yet I choose
to not even take stuff when I attend events because I know that it will just end
up in the trash. Everything I need is kept in organized notes on my iPad.
4. Questioning the status quo : Ever since I stopped using my desk I find myself
looking for more opportunities to improve my efficiency. Do I really need the
laptop anymore? Maybe the laptop is just a crutch like my old desk used to be.
Leaving that old desk behind taught me to question everything that I use in my
life. I've come to realize that there are many things that we use daily only
because that's the way it's always been and not because it's smart or efficient.
5. Cutting costs : By embracing the desk-free challenge, I've saved costs. I no
longer need the desk or the space around it. What would my company look like
if I could teach others the value of living desk-free? There's a price for space
and what I've learned through the desk-free challenge is that the real cost for
my business was my sitting behind a desk. My business and life have changed
for the better all because I questioned, "Do I really need this desk?"
