The purpose of this application note is to describe the options for using DeltaV M Series Virtual IO Modules with

S Series
Controllers.
The DeltaV Virtual IO Module (VIM), VIM-4201, will not only work with DeltaV M Series carriers but also with DeltaV S Series
carriers. Please follow the guidelines below for successful carrier selection and installation.
General Guidelines
The Virtual IO Module(s) will need to be installed in a controller slot(s) of the Vertical Plus 4-wide carrier
Each Virtual IO Module will require a DeltaV System Power Supply mounted in the power supply slot to the left of the
controller slot.
The total DeltaV Railbus distance of 6 meters cannot be exceeded. This is the distance that includes all carriers, carrier
extenders, and carrier extender cables.
Horizontal S Series Carrier Configuration
The S-series interfaces provide improved ease of installation with the same proven proven features of M-series I/O interfaces.
Simplex or redundant controllers can be configured to ocmmunicate with simplex/redundant Virtual I/O Module. If redundant
Controllers are required, two 2-wide s series carriers will need to be added. The S Series I/O carriers should be installed first
prior to bus extender installation for Virtual I/O Module installation.
The S Series controllers will requre a right bus extender to connect to the left bus extender on the m series vertical plus 4-wide.
Vertical Plus M Series Carrier Configuration
The vertical 4-wide carrier only has slots for two Virtual I/O Modules. If the vertical carrier is not a VerticalPlus carrier the
following configuration will not work.

One of the enhancements with the DeltaV VerticalPlus Carriers is the ability to connect two Virtual I/O Modules, allowing the use
of redundant Virtual I/O Modules. A sample configuration is shown below. Please refer to the DeltaV Installation and Planning
guide and the Virtual I/O Manual for more information. For more information on Virtual I/O Module configuration please reference
the following documents:
