The students and faculty of Shawnee stepped out of the classroom and onto the hardwood as part
of the student councils annual charity basketball game held Oct. 22. The proceeds from the event
went to the Shawnee student councils charity for the school year, Christines Hope for Kids. The
mission of the foundation is to help less fortunate children and to support local community agen-
cies that work with and benefit children.
Friendly competition for charity

Shawnee High Schools colors
may be blue and white, but school
administrators said students
have been seeing green thanks to
an anti-violence program.
The Green Dot program at
Shawnee High School was started
four years ago to help reduce neg-
ative actions, whether physical,
verbal or emotional. In the pro-
gram, violent, abusive or bully-
ing-type acts are considered to be
red dots. Students are encouraged
to get rid of these red dots in the
school culture with positive ac-
tions, referred to as green dots.
A red dot could be as simple as
a hit or a shove, or its using nega-
tive words in a post or a text,
Shawnee Principal Matthew
Campbell said. Green dots are
basically when someone steps up
or gets involved.
The pilot program began fol-
lowing a period of three years
where the school saw a jump in
suspensions. In the three years
prior to the start of Green Dot in
the 2011-12 school year, Shawnee
had 49 suspensions.
Each year, 30 sophomores, jun-
iors and seniors are nominated to
be student leaders in the pro-
gram. The group is typically bal-
anced between the three grade
levels, as well as boys and girls.
Staff members and teachers can
nominate students, and students
can also self-nominate.
Campbell said the group of 30
consists of students from differ-
ent backgrounds and social
groups. To make the program
work successfully, the staff tries
to find leaders throughout the
student body.
We try to identify students
who have a large influence in
their circles, Campbell said.
After going through training
during the summer, the student
leaders act on their roles through-
out the school year. Coinciding
with the Lenape School Districts
motto of teaching students to be
upstanders, these student leaders
are encouraged to step in when

A special healing Mass and exposition of
the Blessed Sacrament will take place on

ciously agreed to share his love of
Jesus in the Eucharist again this year.

V
oting is one of the inalienable
rights that our forefathers
fought so fervently for so
many years ago. Many would say that
voting is one of the most important in-
alienable rights that we have as Amer-
icans, if not the most important in-
alienable right.
Colonial Americans fought for inde-
pendence in the 1700s based on the ral-
lying cry of no taxation without rep-
resentation, and they wanted the
right to choose their own representa-
tion.
Over the following 200 years, three
major pieces of legislation extended
or ensured voting rights:
The Fifteenth Amendment to the
Constitution gave voting rights to non-
white males;
The Nineteenth Amendment gave
women the right to vote;
And The Voting Rights Act of 1965
prevented discrimination in voting.
A lot of time and effort were spent,
and blood was shed, to give all citizens
of the United States 18 years of age
and older the right to vote.
And now, it is up to you to take ad-
vantage of that right at the polls for
the General Election next Tuesday,
Nov. 4.
In this weeks Sun, you will find in-
formation on exactly what you are vot-
ing for, when polls are open and details
on every polling location in town.
If you have further questions about
the election, you can always find infor-
mation on the countys website or call
your local clerk.
Whatever your political slant or
whomever you may be voting for, just
make sure you make your way to the
polls next Tuesday. Many people be-
fore us fought for your inalienable
right to do so.

When reviewing applications
for the vacant council seat in
Medford Township, Mayor Chris
Buoni could-
nt argue
against the
community
involvement
of Brad Denn.
Not only did
his resume in-
clude involve-
ment with the
Medford Me-
morial Com-
munity Cen-
ter, the Medford Soccer Club and
local church organizations, but
he has also called Medford home
for his entire life.
Medford council unanimously
voted to appoint Denn to fill for-
mer Councilman Randy Paces
seat at last weeks council meet-
ing. Denn was chosen from a list
of three candidates named by the
Burlington County Republican
Committee. The other two nomi-
nees were planning board mem-
ber Chris Benstead and Matthew
Keane, chair of the Environmen-
tal Affairs Advisory Committee.
Council appointed Paces re-
placement since Pace resigned
fewer than 60 days prior to Elec-
tion Day. Denn will fill Paces seat
through 2015.
Council went into executive
session at the start of the meeting
to discuss the nominees. Buoni
said all three candidates were
qualified to fill the seat.
We really got three good nomi-
nees, and Im thankful to the Re-
publican Party for that list,

Buoni said. They all had differ-
ent characteristics, professional-
ly and personally.
Denn is a lifetime resident of
Medford and works as a certified
public accountant for Padden
Cooper LLC. His experience as a
CPA is something council valued
greatly from a financial stand-
point. Denn is the second CPA on
council, along with Councilman
Frank Czekay.
One of the most important
things we do is look at the budg-
et, Buoni said. It never hurts to
get another set of eyes.
Denn said he hopes his good de-
cision making skills and business
consulting will be beneficial to
council.
I hope to continue the momen-
tum that Randy Pace had and the
current council is doing with the
budget, Denn said.
Denns involvement in the com-
munity goes beyond the work-
place. Denn coaches with the
Medford Soccer Club, where two
of his four children play. He
serves on the board of trustees
for the Medford Memorial Com-
munity Center and has previous-
ly served on the townships recre-
ation board.
Denns involvement in multiple
organizations, along with the
time hes lived in Medford, was
another factor in his selection.
We had to look at length of
service, Buoni said. Brad has
been involved with the communi-
ty for a number of years. He real-
ly knows the community well.
Denn said his drive to serve the
community comes from being an
Eagle Scout. Applying for the va-
cant council seat was a way he
felt he could extend his service
further.
I always wanted to serve the
community, Denn said. When
Randy Pace said he was moving, I
did get calls from various people
to apply for the vacant council
seat, so I did.
Denn believes the township is
heading in the right direction
under the current council. He said
he is excited to get started and be
able to serve the community he
has called home his entire life.

Denn excited to serve Medford
The Medford Arts Center will
feature poet Lisa Sewell on Nov. 5
at 7 p.m. The evening will begin
with a short free workshop and
will end with an open mic. Light
refreshments will be served. The
event is free.
Sewell is the author of The
Way Out, Name Withheld and
Long Corridor, which won the
Keystone chapbook award. Her
new book, "Cartographies of
Reading," won the 10th gate prize
from Word Works Press and will
be published in April 2015.
She lives in Philadelphia and
teaches in the English Depart-
ment at Villanova University.
For further information con-
tact Lynette Esposito at (856) 234-
2930.
MAC hosts poet Lisa Sewell, workshop Nov. 5
they see negative actions taking
place.
The student leaders also in-
struct the freshman class to be
upstanders themselves. The stu-
dents go into ninth-grade health
classes each year to train the
freshmen on how to be a Green
Dot in the same way they have
learned. With Green Dot in its
fourth year, the program has now
gone through the entire student
body.
Every student in our building
has gone through Green Dot
training in health class, Camp-
bell said.
The Green Dot message is also
spread outside freshmen health
classes. Student leaders speak at
large group assemblies through-
out the year to continue to pro-
mote the message. Green Dots
themes are also present in the dis-
tricts other anti-bullying initia-
tives.
Since launching Green Dot,
Shawnee has seen a 34 percent re-
duction in suspensions compared
to the three years prior.
Green Dot is still considered a
pilot program at Shawnee, but
Campbell said the reduction in
suspensions the past three years
is evidence it is having a positive
effect on the student body.
You really feel a difference in
the community, he said.
Chris Heilig, director of pro-
grams and planning for the
Lenape district, said Green Dot
could be expanded to the other
three high schools sometime in
the future.
