We received so many bits of news that we had to make an executive decision and hope you enjoy this our Special Christmas edition
So much has happened since our last issue. Santa arrived to hear the children’s Christmas Wishes. A Food drive was held by the lo-

Valentine’s Day Drawing; Watch for the Jan issue for our annual Valentine’s Day Drawing. Get your pens and pencils ready to fill
out a entry form at the participating shops from Crandon to Suring. Last years drawing we had over 4000 entries with up to 50
prizes to be won.
The weather On Dec. 8th, what might be the first of many snow blizzards of the 21st century, the Lakes Country Territory received
about 8-10 inches of snow. Schools were closed and the Governor declared a State of Emergency. It started out as only a few flakes
and lasted for several hours. Be sure to take care as each snow fall arrives. Remember to dress warm and wear many layers.
Health: The seasonal flu and H1NI have been crossing the miles of the Lakes Country Territory and around the globe. Local
clinic’s should be receiving their distribution of the vaccine soon. Please contact your local clinic for dates and times
of availability.
Birthday Wishes– Kathy Fuhrman-Dec 12th, Sara Perkins-Christmas Eve, Dec 24th. and to all of our readers cele-
brating this season.
Forest County, Wabeno, WI-; It’s been 40 some years since a local bank was robbed in Forest County, but on Dec.
12th the Laona State Bank in Wabeno by was robbed by a single suspect. Reports indicate that a blond haired woman
entered the bank shortly before their 6 p.m. closing time and robbed the bank of unknown amount. No one was injured
and no new updates are available at this time. The Forest County Sheriff’s Dept. is asking that anyone with information regarding
the incident to call the Forest County Sheriff's Department at 715-478-3331.

Cover photo; On the morning of April 1, 2001 I took the cover photo. But, on March 30th there wasn’t even a hint of a snowstorm.
However, we awoke to several inches on the ground. We were attempting to make our way back to IL along the nearby road where I
found this wonderful scene. It certainly did make for an interesting April Fool’s Day ride home. I‘ve added a little to the photo to
share our holiday greeting with you this year.

The meeting of the Up North Authors Circle (UNAC) was held November 10 at the Lakewood Library. The group heard from mem-
bers Dorothy DeVolt, Zach Mason, and Gus Knollenberg. The evening again demonstrated the variety and high quality of work done
by local authors who devote themselves to their craft.
Dorothy DeVolt, who hails from Mountain, began the meeting by reading several
poems. She received kudos for her deeply personal serious verse as well as her whim-
sical nature poetry, especially its vivid imagery. Dorothy cannot make every meeting,
but she never disappoints when her time to share comes.
Gus, who is from the Lake Lucerne area, shared another short essay, this one written
about two months ago after a people-watching “non-encounter” at an airport. His
amusing piece describes a yuppie-type businessman wolfing down a huge fast-food
meal in under three minutes. Gus details the scene with such pizzaz that the group
erupted in laughter several times during his reading.
Zach concluded the meeting with the announcement that he had finished Book Four
of his Quintilogy, The Queen of Hearts. After he read a powerful scene from what he
has entitled “The Fuhrer’s Secret Corps,” members offered valuable feedback. Zach
left the meeting determined to make small but important revisions to his book.

The group does not meet in December. The next meeting of UNAC is scheduled for January 13, at the Lakewood Library, from 5:00-
7-00 p.m. It will be the group’s fifth anniversary and members are invited to bring a snack to pass. New members are always wel-
come to attend.

A Word or Two From Dr. Jason

Weight Loss Planning For

Making It Through the Holidays!
1. Try to exercise 4 to 5 days a week.
2. Eat protein every two hours.
3. Make it a point to NOT eat after 6:00 pm every day (except for days that you have a holiday event to go to).
4. Drink a minimum of a half gallon of water a day.
5. When you get to a party, take a few bites of something with protein in it first, then wait a few minutes before you eat
anything with sugar or carbs in it. It is important for digestion and your body’s ability to tell you that you are full, to
have protein hit your
stomach first! This is a good rule of thumb for the first thing you eat in the morning, and at every meal as well!
6. At each party, try to eat mostly from the veggie trays, and meat and cheese trays. Stay
away from crackers. (If you
bring Gluten Free Crackers, they are way less “make you fat” than regular crackers!)
Have dessert, but don’t have all the dessert!
7. Make sure to chew your food thoroughly! Chewing food slowly, provides much more
nutrition to your body and gives your brain more time to tell you when you are full!
8. Make it a point to limit (or eliminate would even be better) grains and sugar on
“normal” days—the days you don’t have a holiday party going on.
9. Get to bed early!!! There is lots going on around the holidays—but make sure to take
time for good sleep. Schedule it if you have to!
10. Don’t stress!!! Stressing increases binge eating, and affects your body’s ability to burn fat on so many levels!
11. Schedule one or two massages during the holidays. It’s “me” time that will really help you to cope with the stress
better.
12. ENJOY yourself! Have fun eating the things you love at your parties! Feeling guilty actually makes your body
acidic, which causes you to hang on to more of the calories you are eating.
13. Always remember -- fat is NOT what makes us fat!!! Sugar is what makes us fat, so make sure you get enough fat!

break! This fall season the children made and added to their own Color Scrapbooks over the course of several weeks. They also deco-

Mini Pow Wow Held In Wabeno

The elementary and high school students of the
Wabeno Area School District participated in a
mini pow wow held by the Potawatomi Tribe on
Friday, November 19, 2009 in the high school
gym. Native dancers of all ages performed the
jingle dance, the traditional dace, grass dance and
others in their native dance costumes. All stu-
dents and adults were invited to participate in the
dances. A dance-off was held to decide on our
most inspiring non–native dancers. Mr. Chit-
wood and Mr. Farrell competed, with Mr. Farrell
winning in the end. Our special guest was Jackie
Bird, who performed the hoop dance with the
help of the students and Mr. Chitwood. The
beauty of the drums and the costumes is still
playing in my mind. Thank you to DJ Smith and
the Potawatomi Tribe for holding this event for
our students.

Local author offered award winning book for holiday gifts at Faire
Local author Kathleen Marie Marsh offered her books at discounted prices during the Friends of the Lakes Country Library Craft
Sale on Saturday, November 28 at the Townsend Town Hall. Avid readers stopped by to meet
Kathleen and received a free complimentary copy of her award-winning novel Sunrise Sunset.

Kathleen offered special sale prices on the book that is creating quite a buzz in the area this year,
The Truth About Townsend; Volume II: Poor Man’s Paradise. Volume I: Transforming the
Northwoods, also on sale, as well as Marsh’s other books: The Portly Princess of Thynneland;
My Mother Kept a Scrapbook: the True Story of a WWII POW; and Breastless But Still Breath-
ing: A Breast Cancer Survivor’s Journey.

If you were unable to attend the Craft Fair, call 715-276-6515 or email kathiemarsh@yahoo.com
for more details on purchasing her books. They are also available in Lakewood at Super Valu,
and in Townsend at Mike’s Supermarket, Lakewood Designs and Townsend Shell.
Marsh asks that you support your local authors, artists, crafters and merchants when doing your
Christmas shopping this year. “Patronize these folks who are your friends, neighbors, and fellow
community members. They invest their time, talent and treasure in our local economy; this year
more than ever they need you to spend your hard-earned dollars here at home,” she says.

Christian Food Pantry
Recently the McCaslin Lions donated $2000 to the
Christian Food Pantry. Shown is Pantry Director
Scott Wycherley accepting the check from Lion
President Bernie VanDreel The food pantry serves
the needy from Wabeno to Suring. While it is lo-
cated in Townsend’s St. John Lutheran Church it is
supported by most of the area churches. The holi-
days and the economy have created a great need for
donations.

Mountain Chief Don Wirth recently accepted $1000.00

from the Lioness president Linda Ziegler. The fire de-
partment will put this towards the purchase of an ATV
to assist them with forest fires. The McCaslin Lioness
also sent an additional $1400.00 to the other local fire
departments and ambulance services in the north area.

The McCaslin Lioness are a service organization provid-

ing personal and financial support throughout the
area. The Lioness Faire, our major fundraiser, is sched-
uled for May 30, 2010. With community support, the
Lioness are able to contribute to these important ser-
vices.

McCaslin Lioness collect for Food Pantry

On November 28th approximately 60 members of the McCaslin Lioness met to celebrate the Christmas holiday
during their meeting at Waubee Lake Lodge.

Members of the Lady Lioness each brought an unwrapped holiday gift to

be auctioned to the highest bidder. These funds are used to help with local
activities and donations within the communities it serves. There were items
such as cake holders, holiday table lights, jewelry and much more. Decora-
tive holiday candle center pieces and handmade Santa socks were won by
members during a raffle.

The Ladies were encouraged to bring canned or boxed food to be donated

to the St. John’s Lutheran Church Christian Food Pantry. Lioness members
Janet Biese and Mary VanderVeren, (pictured right) who are volunteers for
the panty, recently delivered the bags and boxes of the food donated.

Nicolet AARP 1191

The November meeting of the Nicolet AARP Chapter 1191 was voting day for the local mem-
bership. Secretary Eli Wilda and Treasurer Carol Butrymowicz were reelected to their positions.
Other board members who were elected to the Board for 2010 were Lorraine Bessert, Emi Litki,
James Kingsbury, Lois Peek, and John and Collette Suminski. Board members will be sworn in
at the annual AARP Christmas Party on December 15 at Lakeside Inn south of Mountain. The
cost of this event is $12.50 per person and will start at 4:30 PM for cocktails. Members are
asked to bring a donation of canned goods for the Christian Food Pantry or a suggested donation
of $5.00.

Chapter member Betty Willems brought in two of her Iroquois Raised Beadwork traditional
dress outfits to show to the AARP group. Betty Willems explained the history and tradition that
goes into creating the traditional dress. She also explained the meaning of the symbols and de-
signs on the traditional dress. Betty won best of show, best of division, best of class and judges
choice for women’s traditional dress at the Cherokee Art Market in Catoosa, Oklahoma. She has
won first place in her category in other national competitions and has become nationally recog-
nized as highly skilled in Iroquois Raised Beadwork.

Pine Needle Quilters Report

At the November meeting there were 38 members attending and 1 guest. The program was given by Leah Giese, the Queen of Strip-
pers, doing a demo showing the different quilts she has made using strips of fabric. We also voted on the "Birchwood Lane Leaf
challenge'. First place was won by Judy Schustedt, second went to Joann Saffran, and third to Donna Limberg. Was neat to see
what everyone did with the panel. Our December meeting will be our Christmas Party at Water's Edge, beginning at 5:30 P.M. We
will have the raffle of fat quarters, exchange and revealing of Secret Sisters, Strippers Club exchange and Block of the Month. This
is our annual Christmas Party dinner. We will have games, songs, and anyone wishing to exchange a homemade ornament, please
bring one wrapped.
The time is nearly here for the "Home is Where the Heart is Challenge." Bring your finished challenge to our Christmas Party on
Dec. 7.Quilts will be hung at the party and members will vote on their favorites. There will be lst, 2nd 3rd and Honorable Mention
ribbons and prizes.
We will not issue new BOMs for December. You may bring your blocks to the Dec. or Jan. meetings
For the past three years we have sent quilts down to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Ft. Hood Texas. Laurie Schoen-
beck hopes that you will all join in continuing with this project. She is hoping that each member will commit to making at least one
quilt to send next Memorial Day. It was a proud moment when we carried our
quilts in the Memorial Day Parade in downtown Mountain. There were many comments about how wonderful that was, and how
touched people were with the display. We will again shoot to have them finished by Memorial Day, and hopefully with the help of
all of you...as well as some family and friends, we will again be able to march them in the parade.
Just a reminder that we hope to have at least 2 full size quilts from every member for the Quilt Show in Oct. The Youth section will
again be included. This means any daughter, son, niece, nephew or grandchildren are in this category with their own creations. The
Boutique and Fashion show will be new a new addition for the 2010
show. The boutique will give guild members a chance to sell their items as long as they have at least 2 quilts to hang in the show. A
percentage that has yet to be determined will go back to the guild. The fashion show will be of jackets, bags, purses, sweatshirts etc.
Details of this are still being worked out.
A reminder to the ladies going to Paducah in April that the last payment is due by Feb. 1, 2010.
If the weather is nasty and you're not sure if a meeting or sewing session will be held, you may call an officer to find out. For the
sewing session a decision will be made by 2:00pm, and for a regular meeting by 5:00pm.

The Pine Needle Quilters wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
