The meeting of the Up North Authors Circle (UNAC) was held November 10 at the Lakewood Library. The group heard from mem-
bers Dorothy DeVolt, Zach Mason, and Gus Knollenberg. The evening again demonstrated the variety and high quality of work done
by local authors who devote themselves to their craft.
Dorothy DeVolt, who hails from Mountain, began the meeting by reading several
poems. She received kudos for her deeply personal serious verse as well as her whim-
sical nature poetry, especially its vivid imagery. Dorothy cannot make every meeting,
but she never disappoints when her time to share comes.
Gus, who is from the Lake Lucerne area, shared another short essay, this one written
about two months ago after a people-watching “non-encounter” at an airport. His
amusing piece describes a yuppie-type businessman wolfing down a huge fast-food
meal in under three minutes. Gus details the scene with such pizzaz that the group
erupted in laughter several times during his reading.
Zach concluded the meeting with the announcement that he had finished Book Four
of his Quintilogy, The Queen of Hearts. After he read a powerful scene from what he
has entitled “The Fuhrer’s Secret Corps,” members offered valuable feedback. Zach
left the meeting determined to make small but important revisions to his book.
The group does not meet in December. The next meeting of UNAC is scheduled for January 13, at the Lakewood Library, from 5:00-
7-00 p.m. It will be the group’s fifth anniversary and members are invited to bring a snack to pass. New members are always wel-
come to attend.
