Introducing Writer
Starting from the system menu
Using the system menu is the most common way to start Writer. The system menu is
the standard menu from which most applications are started.
On Windows, it is called the Start menu.
On GNOME (inu!", it is called the Applications menu.
On #$E (inu!", it is identi%ed &y the #$E logo.
On Mac O' (, it is the Applications menu.
When OpenO)ce.org was installed, a menu entry was added to your system menu.
The e!act name and location of this menu entry depends on your graphical
en*ironment. This chapter loo+s at Windows, GNOME and #$E on inu!, and Mac O'
(. The concepts should easily &e applica&le to another operating system.
Windows
On Windows, the OpenO)ce.org menu is located in Programs > OpenOfce.org
2.x where ,-.!. corresponds to the *ersion num&er of OpenO)ce.org. /igure 0
shows a typical setup on Windows (1. 'elect OpenOfce.org Writer to start Writer
with a &lan+ document.

Menus are located across the top of the Writer window. The main menu selections
are #ile, $dit, %iew, Insert, #ormat, !a&le, !ools, Window, and 'elp. When you
clic+ one of the main menu names, a list of related options is displayed.
#ile contains commands that apply to the entire document such as Open,
Sa(e, $xport as P)#, etc.
$dit contains commands for editing the document such as *ndo #ind +
,eplace, etc.
%iew contains commands for controlling the display of the document such as
-oom We& .ayout, etc.
Insert contains commands for inserting elements into your document such as
headers, footers, pictures, etc.
#ormat contains commands for formatting the layout of your document, such
as Styles and #ormatting, Paragraph, and /ullets and 0um&ering.
!a&le shows all commands to insert and edit a ta&le in a te!t document.
!ools contain functions such as Spellchec1, 2ustomi3e, and Options.
Window contains commands for the display window.
'elp contains lin+s to the 3elp %le, What4s This5, and information a&out the

Writer has se*eral types of tool&ars: doc+ed, Foating, and tear?o;. $oc+ed
tool&ars can &e mo*ed to di;erent locations or made to Foat, and Foating tool&ars

The top doc+ed tool&ar (default position" is called the Standard tool&ar. The 'tandard
tool&ar is consistent across the OpenO)ce.org applications.
The second tool&ar across the top (default location" is called the Formatting tool&ar.

#loating tool&ars
Writer includes se*eral conte!t?sensiti*e tool&ars, which &y default appear as Foating
tool&ars in response to the cursorGs current position or selection. /or e!ample, when
the cursor is in a ta&le, a Foating Table tool&ar appears, and when the cursor is in a
num&ered or &ullet list, the Bullets and Numbering tool&ar appears. >ou can doc+
these tool&ars to the top, &ottom, or side of the window if you wish

left mouse &utton and drag the tool&ar to the new location. To doc+ the tool&ar in
another area, place the mouse pointer o*er the tool&ar handle, hold down the left
mouse &utton and drag the tool&ar to the new location, then release the mouse
&utton. The tool&ar will doc+ in the new location.

line, without creating a new paragraph.

2. #ields : 9nserts a %eld at the current cursor position. The su&menu lists the most
common %eld types. To *iew all of the a*aila&le %elds, choose Other.

When you clic+ a character in the Special 2haracters dialog, a pre*iew and the
corresponding numerical code for the character is displayed.

'elect a font to display the special characters that are associated with it.

'elect a Unicode category for the current font. The special characters for the selected Unicode
category are displayed in the character ta&le.

$isplays the special characters that you ha*e selected.

6lears the current selection of special characters that you want to insert.
8. Section4 9nserts a te!t section at the cursor position in the document. >ou can
also select a &loc+ of te!t and then choose this command to create a section. >ou can use
sections to insert &loc+s of te!t from other documents, to apply custom column layouts, or to
protect or to hide &loc+s of te!t if a condition is met.

Type a name for the new section. 8y default, OpenO)ce.org automatically assigns
the name N'ection (N to new sections, where ( is a consecuti*e num&er.

current section.

6reates a ))$ lin+. 'elect this chec+ &o!, and then enter the ))$ command that
you want to use. The ))$ option is only a*aila&le if the .in1 chec+ &o! is selected.
The general synta! for a $$E command is: NO'er*erP OTopicP O9temPN, where
ser*er is the $$E name for the application that contains the data. Topic refers to the
location of the 9tem (usually the %le name", and 9tem represents the actual o&Aect.
/or e!ample, to insert a section named N'ection0N from a OpenO)ce.org te!t
document a&c.s!w as a $$E lin+, use the command: Nso)ce !:Qa&c.s!w 'ection0N. To
insert the contents of the %rst cell from a M' E!cel spreadsheet %le called Na&c.!lsN,
use the command: Ne!cel !:QRa&c.!lsS'heet0 =0s0N. >ou can also copy the elements
that you want to insert as a $$E lin+, and then $dit 6 Paste Special. >ou can then
*iew the $$E command for the lin+, &y selecting the contents and choosing $dit 6
#ields.

Enter the path and the %lename for the %le that you want to insert, or clic+ the &rowse &utton
(..." to locate the %le. 9f the ))$ chec+ &o! is selected, enter the $$E command that you want
to use.
ocate the %le that you want to insert as a lin+, and then clic+ Insert.
Section
'elect the section in the %le that you want to insert as a lin+.
When you open a document that contains lin+ed sections, you are prompted to update the
lin+s.

Protected4
1re*ents the selected section from &eing edited.
With password4
1rotects the selected section with a password. The password must ha*e a
minimum of L characters.
Opens a dialog where you can change the current password.
'ide4
3ides and pre*ents the selected section from &eing printed. The components of a hidden
sections appear gray in the Na*igator. When you rest your mouse pointer o*er a hidden
component in the Na*igator, the 3elp tip NhiddenN is displayed.
With condition4
Enter the condition that must &e met to hide the section. 2 condition is a logical expression,
such as N'2UT2T9ON ET Mr.N. /or e!ample, if you use the mail merge form letter feature to
de%ne a data&ase %eld called N'alutationN that contains NMr.N, NMs.N, or N'ir or MadamN, you
can then specify that a section will only &e printed if the salutation is NMr.N.
2nother e!ample would &e to create the %eld *aria&le N!N and set its *alue to 0. Then specify a
condition &ased on this *aria&le for hiding a section, such as: N! eC 0N. 9f you want to display
the section, set the *alue of the *aria&le N!N to NUN.

page style, frame, or section.
