Summary Outcomes

COGS - Being Australian knowing what it means to be part of a unified and
changing community. Significant events and contributions made by ourselves and
others contribute to our heritage, our values and our Australian identity.

Students will use digital technology to show their creativity, knowledge and
understanding of the unit being studied in class.

English K-10
EN2-3A uses effective handwriting and publishes texts using digital technologies
EN2-1A communicates in a range of informal and formal contexts by adopting a range of roles in group,
classroom, school and community contexts
EN2-2A plans, composes and reviews a range of texts that are more demanding in terms of topic,
audience and language
EN2-6B identifies the effect of purpose and audience on spoken texts, distinguishes between different
forms of English and identifies organisational patterns and features
EN2-8B identifies and compares different kinds of texts when reading and viewing and shows an
understanding of purpose, audience and subject matter
EN2-10C thinks imaginatively, creatively and interpretively about information, ideas and texts when
responding to and composing texts
EN2-11D responds to and composes a range of texts that express vewpoints of the world similar to and
different from their own.
Science K-10
ST2-5WT applies a design process and uses a range of tools, equipment, materials and techniques to
produce solutions that address specific design criteria
ST2-15I describes ways that information solutions are designed and produced, and factors to consider
when people use and interact with information sources and technologies
ST2-4WS investigates their questions and predictions by analysing collected data, suggesting
explanations for their findings, and communicating and reflecting on the processes undertaken
HSIE

HT2-1 Identifies celebrations and commemorations of significance in Australia and the world.

CUS2.3 Explains how shared customs, practices, symbols, languages and traditions in
communities contribute to the Australian and community identities.

Unit overview

In this unit, students will use Powerpoint and learn how computer programs and tools can be
used to create digital forms of writing and visual representations. Students will look at the
process and tools that can be used to manipulate images, text and audio to make them
visually stimulating to create a digital story. Students will research to identify our nations
national symbols and then focus on one state to show their understanding about the states
symbols. Through this inquiry, students will develop an understanding of their own identity
and values related to being Australian. They will explore ways they can use technology to
communicate their understanding of their country and identity with text, podcast and images.

Digital Story about Australian Symbols
Powerpoint

Students will use PowerPoint to create a digital movie with
slides to show Australia, its states, national and state emblems
floral and fauna and tourist attractions for the selected state
focus.
Students will begin by using the application PowerPoint and
save a blank project as Aus within their class folder.
Students import clipart image of Australia. Use word
art and Word Art tools to create a visually effective
title Being Australian. Students will then learn to
use the duplicate slide tool and develop an
understanding of its function.
Students will edit the heading on the second slide
and call it Australia. Discuss how to deleted text or
image boxes. Students need to identify what
deleting in the text box or selecting the line of the
text box to delete is trying to achieve. Students will
insert the national symbols of Australia on this slide.
Students will then insert a new slide and insert a
map of Australia which colour codes all the states
and territories. Students will be show the easiest
way to create a text box, how to format the box, text
and outline to their liking and then copy that box to
duplicate it and then edit the text to enter text for the
next State and Capital City etc.
Students will be taught to animate the slides created thus far.
This task will continue next term as the grade will concentrate
on this unit for two terms.
Once all states are completed students will use
shape tools to insert an arrow. This arrow will
indicate the state they will focus on for an in depth
study. Students will watch their slideshow so far and
discuss what they have achieved.
Students will then add a new slide edit text box to
create a heading for the state they wish to focus on.
Image will be inserted of this state. Slide will be
duplicated and the capital city of the state will be
added.
This process will be continued with the following
slides where students will insert images of the state
floral and fauna emblem and bird emblem.
The previous slide will be duplicated and three
tourist attraction images for each state will be added
once the children look on the internet for appropriate
images that are CC. Students will need to add a
reference slide and copy the links for each image
they use. For example for NSW maybe the Opera
House, Harbour Bridge and the Three Sisters in the
Blue Mountains etc.
Slides completed this term will be animated.
Once the slides are completed students will type a
narration script for their PowerPoint and then add
narration to accompany their slides. This will be
saved as a .mov file. Digital Information Stories will
uploaded to the Technology blog. This part may take
several weeks to complete as students tend to
record some slides several times before they get
this right.
Students will watch each others digital stories and leave
comments on the technology blog on what they did well and
how they could improve their digital story.
