1. General description of the course:

The aim of the course is for students to improve their general level of
English at C1 level and to prepare to take the Cambridge Advanced exam
through the study of grammar, general vocabulary and by the practice of
speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

3. Content

Objectives for the subject: Emphasis is placed on class work and active
participation. Activities are learner-centred so students can develop
competencies through group work and individual work, with the support of
audio, video, and computer resources. The students are encouraged to be
responsible for their own learning so that they obtain the desired level.

The students are the protagonists of their learning. The teacher is

8. Evaluation activities
Continuous assessment will be undertaken during class time, which is
approximately 45 hours. Homework will require students to spend a
minimum of 30 hours in their own time and forms part of the mark. The
student must complete the homework / self-study if they wish to obtain the
level required.
Students will be given four assessments during the semester which will
count for 20% of the final mark. In addition to this students will be
expected to hand in four pieces of written work. The class mark (20%) will
be based on an average of these pieces of work combined with progress
tests and with students participation in class and their contribution to class
activities.

10. Lecturers

DAmico, Katharine: katharine.damico@tsi.url.edu

B.A. Honours Degree in French and Italian Philology by Bishops University,
Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, and a Masters Degree in Linguistics, Translation and
Interpretation by Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She has several
years experience in translation, teaching and interpretation. She joined at TSI Turismo
Sant Ignasi, ESADE-URL in 1998, where she currently lectures on the four-year
undergraduate program in Tourism & Hospitality Management, and the one year
Innovative Hospitality Management Masters of Science Program. Lecture areas include
English and French language teaching, Communication and NLP, Themed workshops,
Case studies in Human Resources and Personal and Professional Skills for graduates
in industry placements.

Member of the URL ETHOS research group and author and co-author of papers and
chapters of ETHICS IN TOURISM & HOSPITALITY. Board member of EUROCHRIE
and responsible for the 2002 conference Cross Cultural Challenges in the Industry: The
Educational Answers. International officer for all incoming international students, on the
MSc and Erasmus programs including visas, accommodation and orientation.


Ashby, Michael: michael.ashby@tsi.url.edu

B.A. Degree in History by the State University of New York at Binghamton, New York.
He has many years experience teaching English from the A2 level to the C1 level. He
joined at TSI Turismo Sant Ignasi ESADE in 1998, where he currently lectures on the
four year undergraduate program in Tourism and Hospitality Management. He also
joined at Sant Ignasi Sarri in 1996 where he currently lectures in specialized training
degrees ranging from Catering and Restaurant Management to Image and Sound,
Production and Business Administration. Awarded Rookie Teacher of the Year in
English as a Second Language at John Peter Tetard High School in New York City.


11. Observations

Material: Students are expected to come to class with all the relevant material:
course book, work book and photocopies where necessary.
Attendance: Students who miss 20% of the classes in the semester will get 0
for the continuous assessment in the semester. Each student is responsible for
making sure they cover the material of classes missed.
Absence: Justifications for absence will not be accepted for reasons of work, job
interviews, driving test, doctors appointments etc.
Lateness: Students arriving ten minutes or more after the lesson has started will
be considered absent and will not be allowed into class.
Leaving early: Leaving the class ten minutes or more before the lesson finishes
will be considered as an absence.
Mobile phones, smart phones and laptop computers are not allowed in class
and must be switched off during the whole class.
Punctuality: Students are expected to attend class on time. For the benefit of
students attending class, those who arrive late are required not to interrupt the
class.

12. Cambridge Advanced Exam

All students who have achieved the required level of English in Semesters 1 - 3 will be
offered the possibility of sitting for the Cambridge Advanced Exam at the end of
Semester 4.
