Ethnicity in TV Drama

There are various stereotypes attached to disability these are some of them:
Ethnic stereotypes can sometimes be very harsh, they rae usually created as a generalisation
by members of certain ethnicities to describe members from other ethnicities. An example of
this is how it is widely stereotyped by white people that Chinese people are working class,
live in busy polluted cities and have multiple children. A lot of stereotypes originate from the
same group of white people these are generally white Americans and Europeans. An example
of self stereotyping is when white people are stereotyped to be higher eating and thus higher
social class people, different nationalities are also stereotyped for example Germans are
largely stereotyped to be cleaver and perfectionists, whereas the Spanish are stereotyped to
be careless and aggressive. One common stereotype is that people of Indian origin run
corner shops and don't really do much else.
Example of some of these stereotypes in a TV drama:
Dev from Coronation Street: Dev runs a corner shop on Coronation Street, this
would largely t in with the stereotype that Indians run corner shops, however he
contrasts to the normal stereotypes due to the fact he has ventured into new
business opportunities such as a gym and a takeaway shop. This shows that
many TV dramas set in the current time period now try to avoid using national and
ethnic stereotypes too much due to the fact that they are very likely to cause
offence.
How Ethnicity is presented in TV drama through the 4 areas of textual analysis
Camera Shots: These can be used to establish power through different angles
and shot types for example a popular shot is where there are two characters and
when the ethnic minority in the situation is in the shot it points down at them,
this presents them as having less power than the other person of a different
ethnicity in the scene.
Sound: Different sounds can be used to give effect to the desired representation
for example silence can make a situation sound awkward, thus making the viewer
feel sorry for the ethnic minority in the scene. This helps to make them seem
unapproachable.
Editing: Editing can also be used to emphasise the situation presentation, for
example quick cut scenes can represent an awkward situation and longer
segments with smother transitions can be used to represent comfortable
situations, this is useful in representing ethnic stereotype scenes as a lot of them
are awkward.
Mise-en-Scne: This can be used in TV dramas as you can dress characters in
certain clothes that relate to their origin.
How gender disability links to the other 6 areas of representation (positively and
negatively)
Age: Age doesn't have much of a difference in ethnicity as there are all ages,
however the older you get the more difference will be represented because kids
don't see difference as much as older people.
Disability: Disability is relevant because a disabled ethnic superiority is seen by
some as better than a disabled ethnic minority
Sexuality: Ethnicity doesnt have an effect on sexuality in modern society as
people are portrayed as able to be attracted to either sex, for example men can
be attracted to either men, women or in some cases both, this is the same for
women as well. As with ethnicity TV shows make sure to include people of all
different types of sexuality as not only does it add another dimension to some
storylines it also makes sure nobody is offended/feels left out. This is nor a
negative or positive impact it is neutral.
Class and Status: The effect that ethnicity has on class and status is profound,
as generally ethnic minorities are stereotyped to be lower class than their white
counterpart, this view however is dated because some of the richest people are
actually ethnic minorities.
Gender: I don't personally think that gender has much of an effect on ethnicity
and vice versa as both males and females can be the same ethnicity. What can
differ however is that the effects that being ethnic minority can have on a woman
that is single with a child can be more profound than a male, this is due to the fact
that they may nd it more difcult to work than a male.
Regional identity: As with some of the others, ethnicity does not have a great
effect on regional identity.
