EEET311a Lecture 1.1 Resistance 1

st
sem. 2014-2015
1. How many particles are there in one half coulomb of
negative charge?
2. The resistance of a cylindrical brass conductor 0.5cm in
diameter and 3 meters long is 0.0108 ohms. Determine the
resistance of a cylindrical conductor of the same material at
the same temperature and having a diameter of 0.25cm and 10
meters long.
3. A cylindrical copper rod having a diameter of 0.4 inch has a
resistance of 0.00264 ohms. Determine the resistance of rod
when it is drawn down to one-third the initial diameter, the
volume remaining unchanged. Assume that the resistivity of
the material is not affected by the drawing process.

4. A resistance thermometer using a platinum wire is used to
measure the temperature of a liquid. The resistance is 2.42
ohms at 0 deg Celsius, and when immersed in the liquid it is
2.98 ohms. The temperature coefficient of resistivity of
platinum is 0.0038 per deg Celsius. What is the temperature of
the liquid?
5. A copper transmission line is to be replaced by an
aluminum cable having the same total resistance. If the
cross-sectional area of the copper wire is 550MCM, what
would be the cross sectional area of the new aluminum cable
in square mm?
