Equality of opportunity is the levelling of the playing feld thus creating social
conditions which allow each person an equal chance to make something of their
lives whereas equality of welfare is the fair distribution of resources to all human
beings.
Equality of opportunity is to be prefered as it gives room for fairness and
individuals can be rewarded for their hardwork.Jobs are flled on merit and there
is no discrimination against people because of their race or gender.Everyone is
given a fair chance to better themselves.Equality of welfare however seeks to
take away from certain individuals what they have and evenly distribute it
amongst everyone. While this may seem like a positive idea it does not take into
consideration that hardwork on a persons part is what got them where they
are.!t does not take into consideration also that people have diferent tastes thus
what would please one person would not necessarily please the other and an
unhappy citi"en does not make a good citi"en.
#.$lthough egalitarianism can never be achieved it is an appealing ideology as it
seeks to achieve equality among people.!t needs defending because it advocates
for all human beings to be treated with equal concern be it legally%at school or at
the workplace regardless of gender or race.
Egalitarianism is based on the view that it is unfair and un&ust for some members
of society to be living in poverty while others have more than enough resources
to sustain themselves.'orally this is a very reasonable argument .
!f egalitarianism could be achieved the world would become a better place to live
in.(rime levels would decrease drastically%since people would own similar things
they would not be moved to steal from one another.)eople would become more
civilised and learn to live together in harmony.
*he concept of equality of opportunity is a fair one as if it were implemented
everyone would get a fair chance in life.!t would then be up to the individual to
use that chance wisely or not.*hose who do well have a right to what they get
and those who do not would have no one to blame but themselves.
+.*emkin is of the view that what drives egalitarians is not necessarily &ealousy
but a sense of fairness.)eople generally ob&ect to some inequalities because they
are unfair and thus ought to be changed.
*emkin is of the view that egalitarianism is good in some cases as it helps
ensure that people are treated fairly.,e however says that we are more
interested in achieving equality between people who are at the two e-treme
ends .i.e the e-tremely rich and the e-tremely poor/.
,e says that it is unfair for people who are deserving of the same treatment to
be treated diferently.,e says it is only when dealing with criminals that there
should be diferences as they can not be treated like normal citi"ens.
! think that it is successful as it has clearly marked distinctions and it is very
reasonable and fair to everyone.0o law abiding citi"en would want to be treated
like a criminal who thinks they are beyond the law.
1.2onald 3workin says that 4)eoples fates are determined by their choices and
their circumstances.5,owever sometimes things happen to you that you had not
planned for and this is known as bad luck.*here are two types of bad luck%brute
bad luck and option bad luck. With brute bad luck it is claimed that one cannot
possibly be e-pected to avoid a particular incidence whereas with option bad
luck one could have avoided it.
*he problem with this is that whatever action one takes and its outcome are
caused by a mi-ture of unchosen circumstances and choices.2oemer.1667/
believes that the choices that we make are partly in8uenced by social
circumstances.
