Saga ]/), pop. 235,738, is the capital of Saga Prefecture
(2,400 sq.km), located at the northwestern part of Kyushu Island.
The city was prosperous in the Edo Period (16031867) under
the castle of the Nabeshima clan. The city and its surroundings
are blessed with natural beauty, agricultural products (mainly rice
and oranges), hot springs and noted for their ceramic art.

Places of Interest:
Saga Castle History Museum ]/7/[)
10-min. by bus from Saga Sta, is the largest wooden restora-
tion of a castle in Japan. The exhibits will make you under-
stand that Saga played a important role in modernizing Japan.
Though almost all the buildings were destroyed in the Saga
Revolt (1874), Shachi-no-mon gate and some stone walls still
remain. Admission is free, but donation is kindly requested.

Yoshinogari Historical Park ($1L),
15-min. walk from Yoshinogari-Koen Sta., is an extensive
park in which a Yayoi-Period (B.C. 3rd century to A.D. 3rd
century) village with circular moats, watchtowers and build-
ings for different purposes has been reproduced based on
the excavated ruins. An excarvation work is still going on in
the park.

410, or 40 min. by Saihi bus, is a ceramic town. Imari ware is
famous for its elegant color sense of red, green and yellow
tones. Its body is characterized by its whiteness and comb-
shaped inscription. There are 60 kilns, 30 of them are in the city,
and another 30 in Okawachiyama, 6 km south of Imari City.
Sightseeing by Bicycle:
4 rent-a-cycles are available for 300 per use at Imari Tourist
Information Center in Matsuura Railway Imari Sta.
Places of Interest:
Okawachiyama 9[u), village of the Secret Kilns, owned
by the feudal lord of Nabeshima, is a secluded area surrounded
by mountains, and is accessible in 15 min. by taxi or bus (270)
from Imari Bus Center (3-min. walk from Imari Sta.)

From Hakata to Takeo Onsen: 1 hr. 10 min. by limited express
on JR Sasebo Line, 3,020 (reserved), 2,520 (non-reserved).
By bus:
1) From Hakata Sta. to Ureshino Onsen by bus (via expressway
Kyushu-go for Nagasaki). Operated by Kyushu Kyuko Bus
Co.
Hakata Sta. Ureshino Onsen: 1,850, takes 1 hr. 50 min.2
hrs.
2) From Takeo Onsen to Ureshino Onsen, bus service (at
2050 min. intervals) is available operated by JR.
Takeo Onsen Ureshino Onsen: 640, takes 30 min.
Takeo Onsen ), on JR Sasebo Line, 82 km from
Hakata (Fukuoka), is famed as a hot spring resort as well as a
post town from early days.
Places of Interest:
Mifuneyama Rakuen GuL), 10 min. by bus for
Ureshino Onsen from Takeo Onsen Sta., at the foot of
Mt. Mifune (alt. 200 m), is a most spectacular Japanese garden
where the villa of the Feudal Lord Nabeshima used to exist.
There are a large number of cherry and wisteria trees and more
than 50,000 azalea bushes in the garden. Open: 8:0017:30.

gate tower located here serving as a symbol of the city. There
are 6 public hot-spring baths.

Saga Prefecture Space & Science Museum )==}=
[), 10 min. by bus from Takeo Onsen Sta. to Nagashima and 15
min. walk from the bus stop, is a museum with a scientific theme.
It provides a planetarium, an astronomical observatory, special
equipment to experience space, and various scientific displays.
English guided tour is available (reservation in advance is recom-
mended). Open: 9:1517:15 (weekdays), 9:1518:00 (Sat., Sun.,
and national holidays). Admission: Museum 500, Planetarium
500, Museum + Planetarium 900. Closed: Mon. (except
national holidays, the beginning of May and during school holi-
days in summer and spring), and Dec. 2931.
Yutoku Inari Shrine |j|{), 40 min. by bus from
Takeo Onsen, is numbered among one of the three grandest
Inari Shrines. It is noted for its beautiful vermilion-lacquered
buildings and the gorgeous tower-gate.
Keishuen )L), 5 min. by bus bound for Ureshino Onsen
from Takeo Onsen Sta. to Karekito, is an extensive Japanese-
style garden with a magnificent landscape. The garden is especial-
ly worth visiting in May for azaleas and in Nov. for autumnal
tints. Open: daily 9:0017:00. Admission: 1,500.
Ureshino Onsen $), is another thriving spa, hemmed
in by hills covered with tea fields 14 km south of Takeo Onsen
(30 min. by bus). Many big modern hotels stand in a row along
both sides of the Ureshino River. The spa enjoys abundant hot-
spring water. Ureshino is also noted for its Japanese tea produc-
tion.
Places of Interest:
Motoyu Onsen ), 1-min. walk from Bus Center is a
public hot-spring bath in Ureshino. Open: 9:0022:00.
Admission: 400 (500 with soap and shanpoo).
Also, many Ryokans open their hot-spring baths with different
characters to visitors with a fee. Ask Ureshino Onsen Tourist
Information Center.
Hizen Yume Kaido ]@@), 25 min. by bus bound for
Ureshino Onsen from Takeo Onsen Sta. to Kokaido-mae and 10
min. walk from the bus stop, is an amusement park modeled
after a town along the Nagasaki Kaido, a major route which ran
through the region in the 17th century (Edo Period). It offers
various hands-on attractions such as Syuriken (throwing knives),
maze, pottery as well as Ninja house. Open: 9:0017:00.
Admission: 1,000 (adults), 800 (children of Junior-High & High
School age), 500 (children above 4 years old & elementary
school).
