.y weakness is my jump shot and the lack of success when shooting. ,he cause of
this is the timing of the shot - release the ball way too late causing a %atter shot
and more pressure on my arms and shoulders when shooting. ,his can be down to
poor selective attention when shooting. / process that !lters irrelevant information
gathered by the sensory system and prioritises the stimuli that can a#ect that
particular situation. 0or e&ample when -$m shooting - focus on other information
such as if there is anyone rebounding or close the opposition is to me. ,his

single channel hypothesis a theory which states that when processing stimuli from
the environment " the brain can only deal with one piece of information at a time.
,herefore" during a game a performer must clear the !rst stimulus received before
reacting to the second and clear the 1bottleneck$ that has been formed. 0or
e&ample when shooting a jump shot - have several stimuli to take in therefore
distracting my attention away from the actual timing of the shot such as my
opponents position. ,he timing and the release of the ball is down to the movement
time of the e&tension of the arms at the elbow and the %e&ion at the wrists.

,his form of practice is useful with well-motivated" e&perienced performers" who

Within this practice i will make it all relevant to my skill and when performing - will
practice with distractions and other stimuli and gradually increase the intensity of
the stimuli to increase the power of disregarding the irrelevant stimuli and focusing
on the important information. /lso to complete this - will need motivation and drive
otherwise my selective attention will not improve. ,he drive reduction theory
suggests that learning will occur due to the performer$s desire to complete the task
and only by achieving the goal will their drive be satis!ed. When the task becomes
habitual or a skill and the stimulus2response bond strengthened" a new challenge
needs to be set to motivate the performer to continue their development. 3r other
motivational techni4ues -ntrinsic and e&trinsic such as personal goals or praise from
my coach. ,hrough all of these di#erent methods to my practise my timing of my
jump shot should be increased because my short term sensory store should refer
back to my 5,. for past e&periences when jump shooting and learn to disregard all
irrelevant information and focus on the release of the basketball.
