Its been a busy year for all of us at the Philadelphia Film Society. As
you may know, the end of 2013 saw us reopen the PFS Roxy Theater.
Ofering films reflective of those wed play in the Philadelphia Film
Festival, from the experimental to documentary, independent to
prestige studio releases, I have been thrilled with the diversity of the
films weve programmed at the PFS Roxy this year.
In addition, weve utilized the PFS Roxy to launch dynamic programs,
including our Spring Showcase and Childrens Film Festival, special
series including a Wes Anderson retrospective and spotlight on
the 2013 Oscar-Nominated documentaries as well as our monthly
Saturday Morning Specials, Sensory Friendly Screenings, Graveyard
Shif and Filmadelphia at the Roxy screenings. The PFS Roxy has
been crucial to fulfilling PFS mission and extending the Philadelphia
Film Festival year-round by giving us a venue to bring some of the
best cinema around the world to Philadelphia. Now, I am proud
to add the PFS Roxy as a Festival venue, joining the Ritz East, Ritz
Bourse, Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center and the Prince Music
Theater, and giving us an additional presence in the Rittenhouse
Square area of the city.
Its a fantastic year to bring the PFS Roxy on as a Festival partner,
as our Festival programming team has delivered yet another stellar
program. This year, programmers visited more festivals than ever
before, checking out Cartagena, Clermont-Ferrand, Edinburgh and
more in addition to circuit regulars such as Sundance, Berlin, SXSW,
Tribeca, Cannes, LAFF, and Toronto, all to bring to Philly a diverse,
provocative and highly anticipated lineup. With the continued
support of the Wyncote Foundation, Im thrilled to ofer films in the
American Independents and Documentary Showcase categories for
free.
Likewise, weve added some special events this year. Our Opening
Night Celebration will be bigger than ever, screening two films at
the Perelman Theater in the Kimmel Center followed by our opening
night party upstairs. Likewise, our closing night event at Top of the
Tower, with some of the best views in the city, will be equally festive.
In between, were hosting a reception in honor of filmmaker David
Lynch, a Night Market in front of the PFS Roxy, and many events
nightly at the Festival Lounge. All of these events will serve to
enhance the Festival experience even further.
Thank you to all of our amazing supporters, including our returning
Oficial Sponsors 6ABC, Comcast Xfinity, Philadelphia Magazine, and
Southwest Airlines, as well as our new Oficial Sponsors 500 Walnut,
the Lincoln Motor Company and Sweat Fitness. I also want to thank
the PFS Board of Directors and our PFS Members for their continued
support, as well as the incredibly hardworking PFS and Festival staf,
and the hundreds of volunteers who give countless hours to make
the Festival run smoothly. Finally, but just as important, I thank
you for making this event possible. I encourage you to see as many
films as you can, and to share your experience with others. Become
immersed in the full Festival experience. I look forward to seeing you
at the movies.
3 DIRECTORS NOTES
MICHAEL LERMAN
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
J. ANDREW GREENBLATT
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
This feels like a year of monumental shif in film and it has certainly
been one for us. If you read Andys note or have been seeing all our
marketing around town, you know that we are extremely proud
of the ongoing work we are doing at the PFS Roxy Theater and the
growing number of year-round programs. But its also been a shif
for the rest of the world. Weve lost a lot of the greats, such as Lauren
Bacall and Philip Seymour Hofman. We will be honoring them
with some of our screenings in a robust From the Vaults section
this year. This collection of classics will also include some of the
strongest selections from our ongoing David Lynch Retrospective.
Meanwhile, some of the greats still living brought us new surprises.
Jean-Luc Godard made his first 3D feature with Goodbye to
Language. Alejandro Gonzalez Iarritu honed the craf of long
takes in our incredibly cinematic opening night film, Birdman. The
Dardennes Brothers made their most commercial movie to date with
the ticking-clock drama, Two Days, One Night. Its certainly a great
time to try something new!
2014 was a challenge for the programming team with such a bevy of
riches. How to choose? As you can imagine, we keep our standards
high for the quality of content in the festival and this year presented
a unique challenge of editing down our overflowing roster of films.
I am incredibly proud of this years lineup because it has come
together beautifully. From the powerful Oscar contenders including
St. Vincent and Imitation Game, to the brilliant award-winners such
as Winter Sleep and Mommy, to soon-to-be sleeper hits like The
Duke of Burgundy and Girlhood, this years festival is highlighted
by ambitious filmmakers, challenging our sensibilities with daring
new work that stands out from the rest. We are peeking through the
keyhole of the cinematic future, and its incredibly satisfying to bring
this to Philadelphia.
Theres a lot to take in, but in the spirit of all the great innovative
work we have programmed, please take risks and step outside of
your comfort zone as an audience member. Filmmakers this year
have transformed a simple ghost story into a beautiful work of art,
a moving human rights documentary into a treatise on the nature
of perception, and a working class moral dispute into a nail-biting
race for survival. Nothing is what it seems, so I encourage you to read
through all of the sections, choose carefully and take chances.
As a final note, thank you all. Your continued patronage is what
inspires us to find and present the hottest films that are making
headlines and shaping new ways to think about the world. Thank
you for opening your eyes and ears and letting us share with you this
magic weve been collecting all year long.

OPENING NIGHT 29
BIRDMAN OR (THE UNEXPECTED VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE)
DIR: ALEJANDRO GONZLEZ IRRITU / COUNTRY: USA / LANG: ENGLISH / YEAR: 2014 / LENGTH: 119 MIN
CAST: MICHAEL KEATON, ZACH GALIFIANAKIS, EDWARD NORTON, ANDREA RISEBOROUGH, AMY RYAN, EMMA STONE, NAOMI WATTS
THURSDAY, OCT. 16 / 8:30 PM / PERELMAN THEATER
A bold, black comedy from director Alejandro G. Irritu that shines a light directly back on the film industry, Birdman (or The Unexpected Virtue
of Ignorance) tells the story of an actor (Michael Keaton) who is famous for portraying an iconic superhero as he struggles to mount a Broadway
play and battles his ego while attempting to recover his family, his career, and himself.
Dating back to his breakthrough film Amores Perros, Irritus films have always been challenging yet captivating. Here, working to create the
illusion of having been filmed all in one take and taking place almost exclusively in and around a Broadway theater, Irritus camera soars,
engaging the audience in an original film that is a departure from his previous works, yet again displays his talent for innovative storytelling.
Boldly questioning how closely fiction reflects reality, Birdman stars Michael Keaton as onetime action hero Riggan Thomson, who, in an efort
to be taken more seriously as an artist and win renewed acclaim and respectability, is staging his own adaptation of Raymond Carvers What We
Talk About When We Talk About Love. As he attempts to put his alter ego of Birdman behind him although never too far Riggan pours all his
efort and money into the play: writing, directing, and co-starring in the endeavor alongside Lesley (Naomi Watts), another film star making her
Broadway debut, and Laura (Andrea Riseborough), a former and perhaps future lover. When the other male actor in the piece shockingly and
suddenly becomes incapacitated, Lesleys boyfriend, Mike Shiner (Edward Norton), a major film name, volunteers to come aboard, even though
the chemistry and his intentions are suspect. At the same time, Riggan must deal with his straight-from-rehab daughter Sam (Emma Stone), whom
he has engaged as his personal assistant, as well as his exasperated producer and attorney (Zach Galifianakis). Featuring stellar performances
all around from an unbelievably talented and well-known cast, Birdman is buoyed by Keaton in a lead role seemingly destined for an Oscar
nomination.

CLOSING NIGHT 31
WILD
DIR: JEAN-MARC VALLE / COUNTRY: USA / LANG: ENGLISH / YEAR: 2014 / LENGTH: 120 MIN
CAST: REESE WITHERSPOON, LAURA DERN, THOMAS SADOSKI, MICHIEL HUISMAN, GABY HOFFMANN, KEVIN RANKIN
FRIDAY, OCT. 24 / 8:00 PM / PRINCE
Adapted from Cheryl Strayeds powerful account of her solo 1,100-mile hike along the Pacific Crest Trail, Wild delivers a striking and emotionally
rich story of self-discovery and perseverance anchored by a brilliant performance from Reese Witherspoon.
At its heart, Wild is a survival story; however, Strayeds battle for survival starts well before she begins her trek. Reeling from the loss of her mother
Bobbi (Laura Dern) to cancer, the 22-year-old Strayed spirals into a self-destructive decline, destroying her marriage by serially cheating on her
husband and becoming addicted to heroin in the process. When she hits bottom four years later, Strayed decides to leave her demons behind by
embarking on a life-changing journey from the Mojave Desert to the Oregon-Washington border, despite being a novice hiker. The adventures that
Strayed has on the trail, from her encounters with animals to confronting the elements, reinforce the unpredictability, lack of control, and danger
she faces trekking alone. It is the occasional human encounters, however, that enrich Strayeds journey, from veteran hikers to spiritual seekers,
granola freaks to ordinary people, all serving as a string of reminders that people are ofen much more than they seem. Portraying Strayed,
Witherspoon delivers a transformative performance, leaving behind her rom-com, good-girl image and turning in a performance both raw and
filled with emotion. Witherspoons stellar performance is supported by an equally moving turn from Laura Dern as Witherspoons caring mother
and the source of her survival instinct. Thomas Sadoski, as Strayeds concerned yet supportive ex-husband, also puts in a stirring performance.
Renowned author Nick Hornbys (High Fidelity, About a Boy, An Education) adaptation is tautly directed by Jean-Marc Valle, who, in his follow-up
to last years Oscar-winning Dallas Buyers Club, delivers another fantastic film centered on a strong-willed central character overcoming significant
odds. Alternating between Strayeds bold journey and flashbacks of the tragic life that preceded and encouraged it, Wild is a powerful and
inspirational film equal parts epic and intimate. It will most certainly be among the most anticipated and lauded films of the year.

THE GOOD LIE
DIR: PHILIPPE FALARDEAU / COUNTRY: USA / LANG: ENGLISH / YEAR: 2014 / LENGTH: 110 MIN
CAST: REESE WITHERSPOON, ARNOLD OCENG, GER DUANY, EMMAUEL JAL, COREY STOLL, KUOTH WIEL, EMMANUEL JAL
SUNDAY, OCT. 19 / 8:00 PM / PRINCE
Four refugees from the Sudanese Civil War struggle to begin new lives and adapt to American culture with the help of their social worker Carrie
Davis (Reese Witherspoon) afer immigrating to Kansas City, Missouri, in this inspirational tale based on true stories of the Lost Boys of the Sudan.
Written by Boardwalk Empire screenwriter Margaret Nagle and directed by Philippe Falardeau (known for his 2011 Oscar-nominated Monsieur
Lazhar), The Good Lie begins in 1983 as six orphaned children who survive a massacre in their village are forced to make the perilous trek thousands
of miles on foot across Sudan, eventually finding asylum in a refugee camp across the Kenya border. Thirteen years later, the remaining members
of the group are once again on the move this time to America. There, aided by a spirited employment advisor played by Reese Witherspoon,
and her boss Jack (Corey Stoll), they begin building new lives of hope and opportunity, facing each new challenge finding a job, reuniting with
a loved one, figuring out how to answer the phone with good-natured humor and an unwavering resolve to prosper. In helping these Lost Boys
find a new home, Carrie and Jack find more than just job success; they too become enriched. While Witherspoon might be the best-known actor in
the cast, the film truly belongs to the four first-time Sudanese actors Arnold Oceng, Emmanuel Jal, Ger Duany, and Kuoth Wiel, each of whom lived
through real-life circumstances similar to that of their characters. The authenticity of their performances, coupled with Nagles lively script and
Falardeaus sensitive direction, make The Good Lie a moving testament to the remarkable journey of Lost Boys everywhere.

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Alan Turing, the British mathematician who helped end the Second World War and usher in the computer age, but

Desperate to turn the tide of World War II, the British government launched its most covert operation of the war, Bletchley Park, where scores
of scientists, mathematicians and puzzle fanatics worked tirelessly to achieve the impossible and decipher Enigma, the Germans seemingly
unbreakable code. Alan Turing, an obsessive and eccentric but brilliant mathematician, believed that he, and he alone, had the solution to the
problem. Turings assured arrogance, coupled with his complete lack of social graces, alienated his colleagues and antagonized his superiors,
forcing him to persevere isolated and ofen alone. Further complicating Turings life in the margins was the fact that he was a gay man living in
a time when homosexuality was seen both as a sickness and a crime. Winner of the Audience Award at the Toronto Film Festival and based on
the book Alan Turing: The Enigma, The Imitation Game brings to life one of the most pivotal figures of WWII, one whose story remained largely
unknown for nearly 40 years afer the war ended. Cumberbatch gives a remarkable performance, with every line and gesture informed by Turings
remarkable intellect and the secrets both personal and political he kept inside. Keira Knightley co-stars as Joan Clarke, the lone woman
working on Enigma and the only person who could get past Turings prickly personality to see the troubled, tragic genius underneath.

CAST: KEIRA KNIGHTLEY, CHLO GRACE MORETZ, SAM ROCKWELL, ELLIE KEMPER, JEFF GARLIN, MARK WEBBER
MONDAY, OCT. 20 / 7:50 PM / PRINCE
Freaking out at the sudden encroachment of adulthood on her slacker lifestyle, a twentysomething woman, played by Keira Knightley, hides from
her problems by crashing at the home of a teenage friend until shes strong enough to face life.
Megans life has stalled out at 29 years old, but she doesnt mind. Truth be told, her life hasnt progressed much since high school. She still has
the same boyfriend, is still working for her overly-indulgent dad (the winning Jef Garland), and though she did earn a degree, she hasnt used it.
But thats all fine with Megan. When her checked-out lifestyle is put under scrutiny afer a disheartening 10-year reunion, a friends wedding, an
unexpected family revelation, and, perhaps most overwhelming of all, an ill-timed marriage proposal, Megan runs of into the night, looking for
refuge in the company of teenage Annika and her simpler world of slumber parties, prom dates, and ill-gotten wine. Hiding out in Annika and her
single dads guest room, Megan tries to get it together, while not letting the world around her fall apart. Chlo Grace Moretz and Sam Rockwell
co-star alongside Knightley never more relaxed and approachable as the father and daughter who take Megan in. Its a testament to the
strength of director Lynn Shelton and first-time screenwriter Andrea Seigel that, while this is undeniably Megans story, all three characters emerge
believable and wonderfully realized. Touching and funny, Laggies shows that you can come of age no matter how old you are.

DIR: THEODORE MELFI / COUNTRY: USA / LANG: ENGLISH / YEAR: 2014 / LENGTH: 103 MIN
CAST: BILL MURRAY, MELISSA MCCARTHY, NAOMI WATTS, CHRIS ODOWD, TERRENCE HOWARD, JAEDEN LIEBERHER
THURSDAY, OCT. 16 / 6:00 PM / PERELMAN THEATER
A dark yet endearing comedy starring the incomparable Bill Murray in quite possibly his finest role as the curmudgeonly titular character in St.
Vincent, an unlikely positive role model for his new 12-year-old neighbor.
Playing a broke and temperamental Vietnam War veteran with a taste for liquor, loose women, and gambling at the local horse track, Vincent
(Bill Murray) is easily the most unlikely and inappropriate role model imaginable. When single mother Maggie (Melissa McCarthy) moves into
the house next door with her 12-year-old son Oliver, however, that is exactly what Vincent becomes. Though hes reluctant at first, Vincents
nonexistent finances and significant debt lead him to suggest caring for Oliver during Maggies late-night nursing shifs at the hospital. With no
other options, Maggie reluctantly agrees. Accustomed to spending his time split among bars, the horse track, and the strip club, Vincent sees
no reason to deviate from this routine so he simply brings Oliver along. Unorthodox and unusual as it may be, with such instructional gems as
teaching Oliver how to bet at the race track or break a bullys nose, Vincents caretaking and guidance of Oliver transforms into a tender and
mutually beneficial friendship. An ensemble with a stellar cast that also includes Chris ODowd, Terrence Howard, and Naomi Watts, St. Vincent
is buoyed by impressive and engaging performances all around. Performing against type, McCarthy and ODowd in particular play it straight and
even somewhat subdued in the case of McCarthy, whereas Naomi Watts resides at the other end of the spectrum in her role as a pregnant Russian
prostitute dealing with new-mom jitters. Yet it is Murray who holds court as the title character, delivering an amusing, of-putting, and heartfelt
performance as his life begins to change despite his reservations and resistance.

DIR: DAVID LYNCH / COUNTRY: USA / LANG: ENGLISH / YEAR: 1986
LENGTH: 120 MIN / CAST: ISABELLA ROSSELLINI, KYLE MACLACHLAN,
DENNIS HOPPER, LAURA DERN
MONDAY, OCT. 20 / 10:00 PM / PRINCE
David Lynchs infamously divisive 1986 erotic thriller follows a
young mans descent into the seedy, sexually charged criminal
underbelly of the sleepy town where he was raised.
Afer his fathers stroke, Jefrey Beaumont returns home to
Lumberton from college to take care of his family. Afer finding a
severed ear in a field on his way home from the hospital, he brings
his gruesome discovery to the towns detective. Befriending the
detectives daughter, Sandy, who gives him details on the case of
the severed ear, Jefrey sets about on his own investigation. He
meets Dorothy Vallens, a mysterious lounge singer whos involved
with some of Lumbertons most violent and corrupt individuals,
including the manic criminal Frank Booth. In what is considered his
first masterpiece, Lynch upends the quiet safety of suburban life as
Jefrey tries to save Dorothy and shelter the virtuous Sandy. But the
dark side of Lumberton threatens to ensnare him as he navigates
Lynchs perverse and unsettling version of the all-American town.
Presented with lush, Norman Rockwell-esque colors, this beautiful
35mm print is just as striking today as when it hit theaters in 1986.

MULHOLLAND DR.
DIR: DAVID LYNCH / COUNTRY: USA / LANG: ENGLISH / YEAR: 2001
LENGTH: 147 MIN / CAST: NAOMI WATTS, LAURA HARRING,
JUSTIN THEROUX
SATURDAY, OCT. 18 / 4:45 PM / PRINCE
Widely regarded as one of David Lynchs finest works, 2001s
Mulholland Dr. blurs the fine line between truth and deception,
turning reality and identity inside out, in this unconventional,
dreamy neo-noir thriller.
In the role that put her on the map, Naomi Watts plays aspiring
actress Betty, recently arrived in Los Angeles, whose life quickly
becomes intertwined with a mysterious woman. Afer a devastating
car crash on Mulholland Drive leaves a femme fatale, known as Rita
(Laura Harring), with amnesia, she and Betty team up to discover
her identity. Both women are pulled into a psychotic illusion
involving a dangerous blue box, a director named Adam Kesher
(Justin Theroux), and the mysterious nightclub Silencio. Originally
imagined for television, the pilot was rejected by TV execs for
being too bizarre, so Lynch, with his signature menace and style,
reconceived his footage and the narrative into a masterpiece of
independent cinema. Interwoven with layers that beg for multiple
views and endless discussion, Mulholland Dr. remains a dark,
dazzling piece, projected in haunting beauty on 35mm.

CAPOTE
DIR: BENNETT MILLER / COUNTRY: USA / LANG: ENGLISH
YEAR: 2005 / LENGTH: 114 MIN / CAST: PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN,
CLIFTON COLLINS JR., CATHERINE KEENER
SUNDAY, OCT. 26 / 12:20 PM / ROXY A
In what might have been his strongest screen performance ever,
the late Philip Seymour Hofman portrays Manhattan bon vivant
Truman Capote as he spends five years researching and writing the
prolific murder case that turned into his genre-bending classic,
In Cold Blood.
Already a regular on New York Citys society circuit with the success
of his short stories, including Breakfast at Tifanys, Truman
Capote did a literary about-face in 1959 afer hearing of the Clutter
family murder in Holcomb, Kansas. The eccentric and openly
homosexual Capote travels to Holcomb to interview the family,
friends, and murderers of the Clutter family. As he immerses himself
in the case, Capote befriends one of the perpetrators on death row,
Perry Smith, and, falling in love with him, struggles with his desire
to help Smith. Over the next five years, Capotes work expands
from examining the efects of a small-town tragedy to inventing an
entirely new genre, the nonfiction novel. However, his ingenuity
comes at an emotional price, as the success and logical conclusion
of his novel hinges on the eventual execution of his subjects.
Capote wrestles with conflicting desires: to keep Smith alive and to
wish him dead for a better book. Director Bennett Miller brilliantly
captures the moral ambiguity of Capotes position and Philip
Seymour Hofman shines in his Oscar-winning portrayal of this
literary giant who must confront his own humanity.

THE STRAIGHT STORY

LENGTH: 112 MIN / CAST: RICHARD FARNSWORTH, SISSY SPACEK,
JANE GALLOWAY HEITZ
TUESDAY, OCT. 21 / 6:00 PM / PRINCE
A road movie of great charm, David Lynchs 1999 film recounts the
true story of 73-year-old Alvin Straight, who takes a riding lawn
mower across two states to visit his ailing brother.
Seen upon its initial release as a surprising change of pace for
Lynch (although Lynch himself ofen referred to it as his most
experimental film), The Straight Story has emerged over the
years as one of his most emotionally rich films. This portrait of
contemporary folk hero Straight, played by the undeniably great
Richard Farnsworth, recreates his 240-mile journey on a riding lawn
mower from Iowa to Wisconsin in the hopes of reconciling with his
estranged brother before its too late for either of them. A sense
of Americana has always informed Lynchs work, and The Straight
Story allowed him to celebrate, rather than subvert, particular
aspects of the films Midwestern milieu, from its John Deere tractors
and picturesque farmland sunsets to Straights stoic sense of self-
reliance and determination. Thats not to say there arent shadows.
John Roach and Mary Sweeneys script recognizes the hard times
of Straights life, too, giving the film a subtly tragic undertone that
makes it all the more rewarding upon repeated viewings.

The Hunger Games Josh Hutcherson stars as a surfer drawn into
the dangerous world of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, played
with charismatic intensity by Benicio del Toro.
With a surfboard under his arm and his brother by his side, Nick did
not plan on falling in love in Colombia; but then he meets Maria, a
beautiful, compassionate nurse who also happens to be the niece
of the powerful drug lord Pablo Escobar. Soon, the young Canadian
finds himself drawn into the inner circle, where the populist
Escobars Robin Hood aspirations go hand-in-hand with cocaine
smuggling and murder. Eventually, on the eve of Escobars 1991
incarceration in La Catedral, Nick realizes hes so entangled in the
world of the infamous drug kingpin that only the most desperate
measures can set him free. Forcefully directed by Italian actor
Andrea de Stefano, last seen in Life of Pi and Eat Pray Love, Escobar:
Paradise Lost ofers a fascinating perspective on Escobar, a man
vilified by most non-Colombians, but seen as a folk hero by many
in his homeland. Del Toro embraces all these contradictions; his
Escobar is mesmerizing to watch a caring father figure who, at

One of the greatest auteurs of our time, Olivier Assayas delivers
another witty, thoughtful drama that explores the process of aging
through the eyes of one revered actress revisiting the play that
made her a star.
Fresh from a critically lauded tour through the worlds most
prestigious film festivals, The Clouds of Sils Maria follows Maria
Enders (Juliette Binoche), who is asked to return to the play that
made her famous decades earlier, but this time in the role of the
older woman. The alluring younger role is to be reprised by an edgy
American actress (Chlo Grace Moretz). To prepare, Enders retreats
to the Swiss Alps with her personal assistant Valentine (Kristen
Stewart), where the material, so reflective of her current situation,
forces Maria to confront her feelings about aging, desire, and the
bittersweet passage of time. Once again Assayas has crafed a film
that is driven by beautiful cinematography and elegant camera
movement. Yet the film is also given life by the performances; if
Binoche is solidifying her status as a nuanced acting powerhouse,
Stewart is reemerging as a sharp, talented dramatic artist. It is a wry
yet deeply compassionate meditation on shifing relationships.

beginning of this anarchic, iconoclastic work, its obvious that we
are in strikingly rarefied territory. Fragmenting the visuals and the
soundtrack and using 3D in daring ways that truly add dimension
and depth, Godard immediately sets about refining his increasingly
experimental, but devilishly humorous, approach to his narrative
such as it is while simultaneously redefining and critiquing
how we absorb information through a barrage of ideas and images
flickering on screens of all sizes (turns out not even Godard can
resist a good iPhone joke). As the aforementioned man and woman
struggle with their relationship and more heady ideas all at risk
of being devalued by Google and other villains of accessibility
perhaps, Godard suggests, their dog Roxy (played by Godards own
pet) has the answer: simply living in the moment.

Co-recipient of the Special Jury Prize at this years Cannes,
Qubcois Xavier Dolan explores the exhilarating and volatile love
between mother and son in this powerful comic drama.
In arguably his best work to date, the prolific 25-year-old director
comes full circle, returning to the subject of his debut film: the
tenuous relationship between a mother and her teenage son.
Unemployed and widowed, Diane (Anne Dorval) is barely keeping
it together when the juvenile institution housing her son releases
him back into her custody afer he sets fire to its cafeteria. Though
he exudes a playful charm, Steve (Antoine-Olivier Pilon) is unruly,
prone to violent fits and hysterical outbursts. Dianes ability to
manage him seems hopeless until Kyla (Suzanne Clment), the
timid housewife from across the street, intervenes. The trio form
an unlikely family unit as they ride out the highs and lows of Steves
unpredictable nature. Shot in a narrow 1:1 ratio, we focus in on
the characters as their emotions explode of the screen, tempered
by stunning montages and a perfectly curated soundtrack.
Dorval, Clment, and Pilon are all revelations in heart-wrenching
performances. Canadas entry for the foreign language Oscar,
Mommy is a powerhouse of cinema not to be missed.

Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan returns to PFF with his latest
masterwork an engrossing character study of a wealthy, but
malcontent, hotel owner at odds with his family and community.
Turkish cinema celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2014, so its
especially appropriate that Ceylan won the Palme dOr at this
years Cannes Film Festival. Working with a script he co-wrote
with his wife, Erbu, Ceylan revels in the spoken word, allowing his
characters conversations and arguments, insults and compliments,
to build into an epic portrait of a problematic man, portrayed
with commanding presence by the stellar Haluk Bilginer. On the
steppes of the Cappadocia region of central Turkey its unearthly
landscapes beautifully underscoring the films theme of isolation
and distance Aydin runs a boutique hotel on the land he inherited
from his father. A former actor who now begrudgingly acts as a
landlord to many of the regions poorer families, Aydin holds himself
above everyone else, including his far more charitable sister and his
long-sufering wife. It takes a rock thrown by an angry young boy to
startle him out of his casual indiference to the world outside of his

In this small-town drama with epic feeling, Marion Cotillard is a
mother who has one weekend to persuade her co-workers to keep
her on the payroll rather than take the bonus they would receive if
they let her go.
The employees at a Belgian solar power plant are given a dificult

or allow everyone to keep their jobs and receive nothing. When
Sandra (the Academy-Award-winning Cotillard) is voted out, she
refuses to go quietly, pleading with her former colleagues one

The Dardenne brothers are known for finding both the relentless

Two Days, One Night is no exception. On the surface this film may be
about one womans desire to keep her job, but as the story unfolds
the stakes and the scope become far grander, growing into a
profound tale of survival, dignity, and understanding. There are no
simple villains here, but many unlikely heroes.

In this moving Australian drama, 16-year-old Billie struggles to

estranged father.
A favorite of this years Sundance Film Festival, 52 Tuesdays is
the story of Sophie (Tilda Cobham-Hervey) and her mother (Del
Herbert-Jane), who is gender transitioning. To add to the turmoil,
Sophie must move in with her father during the process. She sees

they struggle to maintain the relationship through turbulent times,

the films exploration of identity, acceptance, and in all its many

Gulpilil co-wrote this semiautobiographical film with director Rolf
de Heer, their third collaboration together afer 2002s Through The
Tracker and 2006s Ten Canoes. Charlie struggles in vain to find his
place in the dominant white society, whose members have claimed
his native lands for themselves and imposed laws that strip his
people of their identity and power. When his spear and gun are
confiscated, he decides hes had enough and takes of into the
bush to live by the old indigenous ways. But a return to nature
is not the easy solution he had predicted as he merely survives
from one crisis to the next. The film is a meditation on cultural
dislocation and the impact of colonialism as much as it is a journey
of personal discovery and resilience. Gulpilil gives an authentic,
magnetic performance and in this melancholy yet uplifing story we
never lose sight of who Charlie is. To his credit, de Heer treats his

Crescendo! The Power of Music examines the impact of El Sistema,

Since its inception in Venezuela in 1976, El Sistema has been

legendary Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno is under

Independent provocateur Alex Ross Perry casts a jaundiced eye
on New York artists and intellectuals in this comedy about a
narcissistic, self-righteous author and the people he alienates.
Jason Schwartzman, in his best role since Rushmore, stars as Philip
Lewis Friedman, a self-absorbed author who lives his life solely
focused on himself he surely sees himself as his own greatest
creation much to the dismay of his long-sufering girlfriend,
played by a spot-on Elisabeth Moss. The only person whom Philip
grants a modicum of attention is his literary hero, Ike Zimmerman,
played by Jonathan Pryce as an obvious surrogate for author
Philip Roth, whose usual themes of alienation and satirical social
commentary also inform Listen Up Philip. Perry has crafed an
extremely literate film, not just by setting his tale in the world of
book tours, celebrity interviews and writers retreats, but also in
how he approaches his narrative. Breaking up his story into shorter
and longer segments, shifing the focus from one character to
another and utilizing a wry narration by Eric Bogosian, Perry directs
with a unique vision that makes Listen Up Philip one of the most
acerbically funny films in recent memory.

When Mitch Carter, English Department Chair at Truman High
School, wins the California Teacher of the Year award, he receives
a tempting job ofer that forces him to make a decision: stay with
eccentric colleagues or abandon them for more conventional
hallways.
As we enter the halls of Truman High School, its clear that there
is more drama on the syllabus than learning. The schools faculty
is filled with eccentric personalities: Clive and Lowell Hammer,
twin guidance counselors who are doubly incompetent; Steven
Queeg, a robotics teacher with a chip on his shoulder; and principal
Ron Douche, whose last name says it all. But when Mitch Carter,
arguably Trumans sanest educator, wins Teacher of the Year, it
leads to a lucrative job ofer that puts the school at risk of losing
one of its best. Starring Matt Letscher and MADtv alum/Key & Peele
co-creator Keegan-Michael Key, Teacher of the Year is a delightful
revival of the mockumentary genre.

When a body is discovered in the backwoods of a small town in
Nebraska, the unusual circumstances surrounding the death leave
the whole town playing detective.
In 2006, Dr. Steven Haataja, a brilliant but mysterious math
professor in Chadron, Nebraska, disappears without a trace. When
his body is discovered three months later tied to a tree and burned
beyond recognition, it shocks the sleepy town. The community
members start developing their own conspiracy theories, ranging
from the plausible to the absurd, each convinced they know
the truth. The town begins to come to life in the afermath of
Haatajas death, as the eccentric cast of characters each vies
for a minute in the spotlight. The town is full of so many colorful
characters, viewers might forget they are watching Dave Jannettas
documentary. As everyone weighs in with their opinions, Po
Ballantine, a local writer, is determined to crack the case and bring
justice to his town. But as Ballantine, whose acclaimed memoir
inspired the film, inches closer to the truth, it becomes clear that
this Twin Peaks-esque mystery might never be solved.

Delhi Indias famed Kathputli Colony has been home to magicians,
puppeteers, snake charmers, and acrobats for decades, but
when the government sells the land to developers, the street
performers must fight to save their culture from becoming the next
disappearing act.
Home to more than 1,500 artist families, the Kathputli colony
referred to in Salman Rushdies novel Midnights Children as a
ghetto of magicians is one of the last of its kind. Through their
folklore and crafs, the residents provide a link to Indias old cultural
traditions and creative history. But when the slumlike conditions of
the colony no longer fit into the governments vision of the future,
the residents are faced with eviction. Directors Adam Weber and
Jimmy Goldblum capture the growing tensions as the artists clash
with the government and developers. This classic David-and-
Goliath story unfolds and compels viewers to root for the colorful
street performers as they race against time to protect the only life
theyve ever known. Refusing to see this as their final act, the artists
band together in a last-ditch attempt to preserve their homes, their
culture and their history. Rich with stunning visuals, Tomorrow
We Disappear is a beautiful homage to the vibrancy of life and the
importance of art.

A talented and schizophrenic art forger is pitted against an
out-of-work curator in a clever battle over authenticity in this
crowd-pleasing documentary about art and integrity.
Prepare to enter the universe of Mark Landis, one of the worlds
most prolific and successful art forgers. Fueled by a mischievous
desire to deceive, Landis has copied hundreds of famous artworks
and ofered them up for donation to countless museums around
the United States. With his impeccably clever eye for detail, the
schizophrenic Landis has managed to fool dozens of curators.
But he might have met his match in Matt Leininger of Cincinnati
Art Museum, an obsessive collector who, despite having been
introduced to Landis for only a few minutes when being duped by
him, will stop at nothing to expose him. Now, on the eve of Landis
first full exhibition, when his work will be recognized not for its
duplicity, but rather its craf, the two men will meet again. Carefully
letting the events draw out the films themes, directors Jennifer
Grausman and Sam Cullman mount a complex and frequently
playful story of the art behind forgery and the obsession behind
accuracy.

With unfettered access to the New York City Ballet,
director/cinematographer Jody Lee Lipes paints an intimate
portrait of the internationally renowned company as it creates and
performs its 422nd original piece.
Director Jody Lee Lipes, known for his sharp, distinctive work as a
cinematographer on such films as Tiny Furniture and Martha Marcy
May Marlene, takes us behind the scenes of the New York City Ballet
as it creates the 422nd original piece in its decades-long history.
The film focuses particularly on Justin Peck, the wunderkind
choreographer responsible for creating this piece at the tender age
of 25. The world of ballet is infamously private, and Ballet 422 is the
first film to document the entire process of mounting a new piece,
from the development of the choreography, to the first rehearsal,
to the incredible collaboration with musicians, costume designers,
and other artisans. The verit nature of the film showcases Lipes
ability to disappear into the action and allow the camera to behave
as one of the dancers. Its a fascinating look at the blood, sweat, and
tears that go into creating the illusion of efortless elegance.

What would you do if you could live forever? This documentary
showcases two quirky, aging scientists who believe their research
will halt the aging process and bring immortality within our reach,
giving new meaning to eternal youth.
Live forever, or die trying. Thats the motto of biologists Aubrey
de Grey and Bill Andrews in this doc by David Alvarado and Jason
Sussberg. Aubrey, a free-loving hippie-type Brit who is never
without a beer in hand, and Bill, an ultra-marathoner with an
addiction to adventure, couldnt be more diferent. But where
they unite is their rock-solid belief that aging can be cured. As they
advance in their discoveries, they face pushback from opponents in
the scientific world who believe that reversing aging is a defiance of
nature with potentially dangerous consequences. Since 90 percent
of the population dies from age-related causes, Aubrey and Bill
believe that finding a cure is the most important task at hand.
As they experience the loss of loved ones and confront their own
ticking clocks, their crusade begins to take on new meaning.

The competitive and pulse-pounding world of collegiate Quidditch,
a Harry-Potter inspired sport, is profiled in this hilarious and
inspiring documentary.
Quidditch, a sport played while flying on brooms, is just one of
the many inventions in J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter book series
that captured the imaginations of a generation. Farzad Sangaris
documentary follows the UCLA Bruins, the upstart Quidditch team
from his alma mater, as it attempts to make it to its first Quidditch
World Cup in New York City. Led by its endlessly optimistic coach
as he recounts the teams humble beginnings, the Bruins spend
the season playing assertively while fundraising aggressively to get
to the finals. Meanwhile, the sports chief advocate, Alex Benepe,
who took the fictional sport and made it a reality while attending
Middlebury College, faces struggles of his own to execute the World
Cup for the 95 teams attending. Overcoming the persistent stigma
against them, the Bruins and Benepe confront accusations of
nerdiness while helping to popularize the sport that theyve taken

In this intimate, troubling documentary, a small-town pastor strives
to bridge the gap between his wary North Dakota community and the
influx of unemployed hopefuls chasing a broken American Dream.
In recent years, vast pools of oil have been unearthed in North
Dakota, turning small rural communities like Williston into
contemporary boom towns as hundreds of people arrive looking
for work, but too ofen finding nothing. Viewed with suspicion
by most locals, the newcomers find a champion in Jay Reinke, a
Lutheran pastor who sees it as his spiritual duty to help his fellow
man. Reinke opens up his church and home to the men, a selfless
act that draws the ire of his congregation and community and will
eventually have devastating repercussions for him and his family.
Winner of a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, The
Overnighters is an extraordinary accomplishment. Director Jesse
Moss paints with great finesse a compelling portrait of Reinke, a
man of great compassion coupled with troubling contradictions.
In addition, through the stories of the men who traveled so far
searching for an opportunity to work, Moss brings to light the
human cost of our nations issue with economic disparity, making
this essential viewing.

This Time Next Year tenderly documents the residents of Long
Beach Island, New Jersey, in the year following Superstorm Sandy,
and the slow road to recovery afer catastrophic devastation.
In 2012, Superstorm Sandy swept along the Atlantic Coast, ravaging
homes and businesses in its wake. Filmmakers Jef Reichert and
Farihah Zaman focus their lens on the residents of Long Beach
Island, a barrier island just 18 miles long and a few blocks wide that
was devastated by the storm. As the people of this quaint shore
community and beachgoers paradise battle insurance companies
and await help that might never come, they find strength in one
another and band together in the face of adversity. Choosing to
take action on their own, the community quickly mobilizes and

A rousing story exploring the birth of soul music in Miami, Deep
City documents the musicians creating this unique sound and their
contributions to the historical music scene.
Alongside the rise of iconic record companies Motown in Detroit
and Stax in Memphis, the 1960s and 1970s saw explosions in the
popularity of soul music throughout the country, with Miami
being home to one of the lesser-known, long forgotten, but just
as impressive scenes. Until now. Deep City tells the story of Willie
Clarke and Johnny Pearsall, two producers who met in college and
later partnered to form Deep City Records. It was the first black-
owned record label in Florida, and it operated out of Pearsalls
record store. Mixing toe-tapping music and archival footage with
new interviews that document the songwriters, performers, and
entrepreneurs of the Miami soul scene, Deep City is an enjoyable
look at a little-known entry in the history of American music.

Based on the beloved Of-Broadway hit musical of the same
name, The Last Five Years tells the story of a couples five-year
relationship through engaging, powerful, and heartbreaking songs.
Avoiding any spoken dialogue and instead telling the story
exclusively through song, The Last Five Years provides an intimate
look at the relationship between rising novelist Jamie Wellerstein
(Jeremy Jordan) and struggling actress Cathy Hyatt (Anna
Kendrick). As Jamies new novel catapults him toward stardom and
recognition throughout the literary scene, success continues to
elude Cathy, leaving her returning annually to do summer stock in
Ohio. Told separately from each of their perspectives, Cathys side
of the story is ofered in reverse order, starting from what may be
the end of their marriage, while Jamies version of events moves
forward in time, beginning on the couples first night together.
Shifing back and forth to detail their tumultuous relationship
and buoyed by original music that moves between uplifing and
melancholy, The Last Five Years is an enticing roller coaster of a film
that will leave you singing yet teary by its foregone conclusion.

In this moving family drama, a reclusive musician returns home to

unexpected arrival of his 11-year-old grandson.
Although his songs are frank and raw with emotion, the intimacy
singer-songwriter Thomas Jacob displays onstage belies the
guarded solitude he prefers in his troubled personal life. A Leonard
Cohen-esque figure played with a fierce intensity by Mikael
Persbrandt, Jacob has spent years isolating himself; first through
the usual rock n roll trappings of drinking and drugs, then with
a decades-long self-imposed exile to Los Angeles. Now, sober
and having returned to his homeland to record a new album with
his dwindling inner circle, he must confront his past when his
estranged, rehab-bound daughter leaves her son in Jacobs care.
Each damaged in his own way, Jacob and his grandson slowly

on the verge of being evicted. So she agrees to take a job smuggling
hashish across the border. Although Gullette is American, Traitors
is entrenched in a new wave of youthful, inventive contemporary
Moroccan filmmaking. Edgy and energetic but also smartly written
and elegantly structured, it is a kind of thriller that travels lightly
between action and contemplation, city and country, humor and
drama, without losing sight of its beautifully feral heroine.

In this sweetly nuanced Canadian comedy, two young Qubcois
women (Nicole and Veronique) play out their restless summer days
by planning vacations, scamming their bosses, and competing for
guys in Nicoles brothers band.
Feeling as though she has been set adrif in the world afer her
graduation, the young tomboy Nicole must find ways to occupy the
dog days of summer. Sick of her meaningless job and with only her
best friend, Veronique, to hang out with and alleviate the boredom,
Nicoles life is pretty dull. But when her brother unexpectedly
comes home one day with his sexy new bandmates, suddenly
everything changes. Flutters of relationships start, and slowly
but surely a wedge is placed between these two once inseparable
friends. Populated with dry yet whimsical humor, and an endearing
performance by actress Julianne Ct, this sleeper hit from the
Cannes Film Festival tells a musical and magical tale about the
solitude of summer and the pains of growing up.

America.

A HARD DAY

THURSDAY, OCT. 23 / 9:45 PM / RITZ EAST A
SATURDAY, OCT. 25 / 10:00 PM / RITZ EAST A
Disposing of a hit-and-run victims body is just the beginning of a
homicide detectives problems in this high-octane, devilishly twisty
Korean thriller.
The title of writer/director Kim Seong-Huns latest is something of
a misnomer, as theres no way a film with this much black humor,
this many action scenes, and endlessly cascading reversals of
fortune could ever fit into one single day. Instead we follow corrupt
detective Gun-soo on what must be the most stressful two weeks of
his life, beginning with a night in which he must attend his mothers
funeral, dispose of the body of a small-time criminal he accidentally
killed, and deal with Internal Afairs snifing around his brazenly
dirty department. And thats only the beginning as an unknown
blackmailer who claims to know all his dirty little secrets draws the
increasingly harried Gun-soo into a fiendish game of cat-and-mouse
that can end only one way with more murder. A delicious ode to
desperation, A Hard Day pulses with energy, moving defly from
one unexpected complication to another without fail, only slowing
down enough for us to wonder what could possibly come next.

Equal parts horror thriller and dysfunctional family comedy,
Gerard Johnstones foray into genre film has you chuckling over the
familiar bickering with mom one minute, jumping in terror the next.
Heading down the wrong path for some time now, wild child
and petty criminal Kylie finds herself under house arrest afer
a hilariously botched robbery attempt. Considering the rather
dysfunctional relationship she has with her mother, who believes
their old rambling home is haunted, Kylie might have preferred the
jail time. Afer a few spooky incidents, however, Kylie is starting
to see that her mother might not be such a crackpot afer all, and
that they will need to band together along with her equally odd
stepfather and paranormal-loving security guard hired to monitor
her electronic anklet to solve the mystery of the evil lurking
within their home. With def twists and razor-sharp writing, this
favorite from this years genre film festival circuit is full of the kind
of clever visual gags and witty one-liners typical of New Zealand
comedy without sacrificing any of the horror.

Fresh from its premieres in Cannes and Toronto, It Follows is a
frighteningly original independent horror film about a young girl
pursued by an evil shape-shifing apparition seen only by her.
Nineteen-year-old Jay (Maika Monroe) believes she is falling in love
with Hugh. The last thing she expects afer sleeping with him is to be
stuck with a sexually transmitted apparition constantly stalking her,
taking the form of friends, family, or other figures. Wherever Jay is,
the apparition follows, walking directly toward her at a steady pace.
It can be outrun, but it is always coming, and the only way to get rid
of the curse is to pass it on to somebody else via sexual intercourse.
Tormented and terrorized, and reduced to constantly looking over
her shoulder, Jay sets out with her friends to defeat the apparition
before it claims her as its next victim.

Martin Scorsese executive-produced this action-packed crime film
about the Asian-American gangs who fought for supremacy on the
mean streets of New York in the 1980s and 90s.
Co-directed by filmmakers Andrew Loo and Andrew Lau, who
previously made the acclaimed Infernal Afairs trilogy (the first
film of which Scorsese remade as The Departed), Revenge of the
Green Dragons tells a classic American tale the rise and fall of a
gangster with a distinctly Hong Kong flair. Afer being smuggled
into the country under dire circumstances, 10-year-old Sonny is
lost and alone until he meets Steven, a classmate who ofers to
help. Together, the boys attract the attention of the Green Dragons,
the gang that controls the local Chinese underworld, running
everything from drugs to prostitution to illegal mah jong parlors.
Flash-forward 10 years: Sonny and Steven are now both lieutenants
in the Green Dragons, but with very diferent approaches. Sonny is
more calm and levelheaded, while Steven tends to shoot first, and
then shoot some more. When a gangland double cross threatens to
light their whole world on fire, the two friends must decide where
their loyalties truly lie in this visually striking, high-octane thriller.

The third and most adrenaline-fueled installment of the popular
horror anthology franchise sees directors including Justin Benson,
Aaron Moorhead, and Nacho Vigalondo bring us innovative found
tales of terror.
The premise is familiar to horror fans now: a group of mysterious
videos is discovered by an unsuspecting party who has no idea what
horrors await them as they watch. The V/H/S series has brought out
some of the best work from horror greats including Ti West, Adam
Wingard, and Timo Tjahjanto. This third film is no exception. This
time around, the producers have set their sights on viral video. Tales
of evil magicians, mad scientists stuck in parallel universes, and
cocky skateboarders in a fight to the death with occult-like zombies
are all brought into your homes and onto your phones through
the power of a hypnotic video signal coming from a mysterious
ambulance that roams the streets. Directed by the people who
brought you such great features as Timecrimes, Resolution, and
Dead Girl, V/H/S: Viral might be the most terrifying trip down the
found footage rabbit hole yet.
