1.0 WhatisthisBiomedicalImagingcourseabout?
Imagingtechnologiesformasignificantcomponentofthehealthbudgetsofalldeveloped
economies,andmostpeopleneedadvancedimagingatsomestageduringtheirlife.Allofus
areawareofthemisinformationsometimesportrayedinTVdramas,whicheitherexaggerates
thebenefitsoroveremphasisestherisks.Thiscoursewillprovideanintroductiontothephysics
andengineeringofmodernimagingmodalities.Itwillintroducesomeofthekeyapplicationsin
neurologicaldisease,degenerativedisease,reproductionandoncology.Thecoursewillinclude
modulesthatwillbeofinteresttothegeneralpublic,whilstalsoprovidingsomeadvanced
moduleswhichwillcontributetoprofessionaldevelopmentinhealth,engineeringandtheIT
industry.
2.0Whoistheaudienceforthiscourse?
Thiscourseisdesignedwithtwoaudiencesinmind.

1. Thebasiccourse:Itisanticipatedthatthisaudiencewillhavecompletedsecondary
schooling(andparticularlysciencesubjects)assomebiology,physicsandchemistry
conceptsareinvolved.

2. Theadvancedcourse:Firsttertiaryyearofappliedmathematicsorcomputerscience
specialisinginmodellingisrecommended.Healthprofessionalswishingtoupdatetheir
knowledgeconcerningmedicalimagingpostprocessingmaywishtotakethiscourseas
partoftheircontinuingprofessionaldevelopmentprogram.

4.0Whatisthelearningpathwayforthecourse?
Thefollowingdiagramshowshowthecourseisdesigned.Itisrecommendedthatifyouare
doingthebasiccoursethenyouworkthroughtheintroduction,thebasicmodules(coloured
blue)andthencompletethecasestudiesinthefinalmodule.

Ifyouintendtodotheadvancedcourse,youarewelcometocompletethebasiccourseand
thencompletetheadvancedsections.Alternatively,youcancompletejusttheassessment
piecesfromthebasiccoursetotestyourunderstandingofthetopics,andthencompletethe
relatedadvancedmodules.

5.0Howisthecoursecontentorganised?
ThiscourseincorporatesaCaseStudywhichisintroducedatthestartofeachsection(an
outlineofthesectionsandsubsectionsisshowninthetablebelow).Thiscasestudyfollowsa
hypotheticalpatientrequiredtoundergovariousimagingmodalitiesforamedicalcondition.
Followingthecasestudy,eachsectionhasinformationrelevanttothatmodalitydividedinto
subsectiontopicssuchasbasicscientificprinciples,hardwareandtechnologyandclinical
applications.Theseearlysubsectionsformthebasiccourse.Eachsubsectionhasoneor
severalshortquiz/zes.Thesequizzesdonotcontributetoyourfinalgrade,butletyouknowif
youhaveunderstoodthekeypoints.Thefinalsubsectionforeachsectionofthebasiccourseis
amarkedquizonthattopic.
Theadvancedsubsectionisthenpresentedjustaftertheassessmentitem,foreachsection.
Finally,adiscussionforumhasbeenintegratedattheendofeachsection.

Asyoucanseefromthetable,someofthetopicsrunacrossmorethan1week.Forthebasic
course,oneweekofworkinvolvesapproximately23hoursofwork.Therefore,forthe
ultrasoundtopic,forexample,youwillneedtoallow46hourstocomplete.
Ifyouaredoingtheadvancedcourse,estimatesforhowlongthiswilltakewilldependon
whetherornotyoualsocompletethebasiccoursecontent.
