Dressed in a annel shirt and a ragged pair of
jeans, freshman Julian Sander stood atop a stage
in the Joe Crowley Student Union attempting to
win over an audience full of Ph.Ds and graduate
students. Although Sanders casual appearance
and relaxed attitude may have drawn skepticism,
his thought-provoking business proposal proved
laudable.
Sander would go on to become a nalist in the
University of Nevada, Renos fourth annual Sontag
Entrepreneurial Competition in March, despite
not originally entering.
The other businesses were very advanced,
and a lot more complicated than mine, Sander
said. Honestly, I wasnt showing up to win, I just
wanted to see what it was all about.
Shortly after his arrival at UNR, Sander found
himself to be the youngest applicant and rst
place winner of the Sontag competitions begin-
ning portion, the Pack Pitch night, where each
business plan is pitched to the judges.
Upon his two-minute-long business proposal,
Wasted Eyewear was established Sanders com-
pany that recycles worn-out or broken snow-
boards and skateboards to produce handmade
sunglasses.
I literally heard about the competition the day
before and signed up for it that night, Sander said.
I was like screw it, I might as well show up and
pitch my idea.
Sanders rst place idea ipped a switch in his
head years ago, when he had gotten tired of hoard-
ing the many skateboards and snowboards he had
broken throughout his reckless adventures in his
hometown of Auburn, California.
Sander thought, Why not create something new
out of the thrashed wood from the boards, instead
of allowing them to collect dust?
While Sander is constantly developing new
ideas, he has acquired a specific taste for origi-
nality. Despite this entrepreneurial outlook,
money has never been important to Sander.
My whole thing with money is that I dont really
need it, Sander said. Im not out to make millions,
I just want to support myself doing something that
I enjoy, and Sontag is teaching me how do that.
The Sontag competition enabled Sander to take
an idea and create a company out of it through the
judges feedback and the assistance of his mentor.
Immediately following his business proposal,
Sander was tracked down by Matt Westeld, the
founder and director of Entrepreneurs Assembly,
a corporation dedicated to guiding young entre-
preneurs toward success. He immediately became
interested in Sanders business, and wanted to
mentor him for the competition all participants
are required to have one.
I was drawn to Julian because hes real, he
doesnt care about money, he actually wants to
start a business, Westeld said. He has his eyes
on the prize and thats why he won.
Westeld explained that when Sander went up
against Ph.Ds and graduate students, considering
his young age and minimal experience, he raised
the bar for the competition through his eloquent
proposal.
[Sander] doesnt care what he doesnt know,
Westeld said. He has an uncanny ability that
most people cant nd in a lifetime.
Sander took second place in the Sontag En-
trepreneurial Competition 2014, and received
$6,500, but he is interested in heightening his
knowledge. Sander will be participating in this
years Sontag competition as a sophomore.
As he was a nalist this past year, he cannot
enter the competition with the same business
twice, but that has not discouraged Sander.
He has already generated a new idea Thrashed
Lids, a company that recycles fabric from oral
print shirts, and creates ve panel hats out of
it. Sander explained that he is not competing in
Sontag for the success of one specic business,
such as Wasted Eyewear, but for the expertise the
competition offers.
Krysta Jackson, assistant director of the Sontag
Entrepreneurship Competition, worked with
Sander this past year during the competition, and
continues to be impressed by his diligence.
We have never had anyone apply in their rst
semester, and he really understood his market
better than some of his competitors, Jackson
said.
Sander said that he wishes to continue par-
ticipating in Sontag for the knowledge that the
minds behind the competition provide him.
Once again, the money is not the goal for Sander;
it is the feedback he picks up along the way.
Sontag is the reason I have this network of
people in Reno now, Sander said. They all think
Im this business guru but really Ive just been
learning as I go and its been working out.
Sander sees knowledge as the foundation of
business, and he is eager to continue learning.
While looking to become as involved as possible,
The Nevada Governors Cup is another business
plan competition that Sander will be competing
in later this year.
During his downtime between competitions,
Sander is contracting work on the laser cutter he
purchased with his winnings from Sontag. He has
taken up custom engraving as a side business and
creates large orders of key chains for snowboard
and skateboard brands such as Smokin Snow-
boards from Reno and Green Bandit Productions
from Truckee, California.
With the experience he will gain from this years
Sontag competition and the Governors Cup,
Sander will continue equipping himself with the
correct skill set necessary to move forward with
his entrepreneurial future.
Sanders goals for the future are to move for-
ward with Wasted Eyewear, or a new company
that satises his inventive taste. Sander will settle
for either groundbreaking or unemployment. He
will certainly not be found behind a desk, bound
by a cubicle.
I am either going to be a millionaire, or I am
going to be homeless, and I am going to be happy
either way, Sander said. Ive just always known
that I have to make a living doing something cool.

Did you know that a natural environ-
ment contributes to healthier child
development? According to the Natural
Learning Initiative, a childs play experi-
ence is diversied through outdoor learn-
ing activities and interaction with nature.
The University of Nevada, Renos Child
and Family Research Center focuses
on teaching the children at the centers
Early Head Start Program, a preschool
for low-income families, through their
environmental exploration.
However, Sherry Waugh, director at
the Research Center, categorized the
preschools general playscape as lack-
ing in scenery, consisting of dirt and
rocks surrounded by a fence. Waugh
explained that plant life of any kind
would provide a more appealing en-
vironment. Therefore, the universitys
rst Shade Tree Planting event was put
into effect.
Last Saturday morning, volunteers,
parents and the faculty of the univer-
sitys College of Education involved in
the Early Head Start Program gathered
at the preschool to plant a variety of
trees around the playground. Some of
the preschool students also attended.
Learning about trees at a young
age will be effective because kids are
ready and curious as soon as they
start moving around, Waugh said.
The Early Head Start Program
members were thankful to receive
help from outside resources. The
UNR Arboretum, an organization
dedicated to preserving and plant-
ing new trees in the community,
partnered with the City of Reno
because they obtained a grant from
the Nevada Division of Forestry
to plant 12 trees around the pre-
school.
Cheryll Glotfelty, chair of the
UNR Arboretum, stated that the
event was held to celebrate Ne-
vada Shade Tree Week during the last week
of October, and to recognize the value of
trees, particularly in the desert.
According to Glotfelty, the Nevada Shade
Tree Week Council, a committee that
promotes the importance of public shade
trees, argued that when cities set aside
a portion of their budget to plant trees
throughout the community, it encourages
positive and healthy activity.
Leah Sanders, Head Start program
specialist at the Research Center, said that
a natural environment is one that children
of all ages will thrive in. She explained that
the program has prepared trees that will
serve a variety of functions. For example,
spruce trees will operate as a windbreak
from the mountains, buckeye trees will
provide seeds for the children to explore,
and apple, chestnut and maple trees will
offer knowledge of where fruit comes from.
Calena Long, the site supervisor for the
Early Head Start Program, agreed that
incorporating nature into the program
will benet childrens development.
We have applesauce for [recess] a lot
of times, and now we can ask the kids
how the applesauce is made and where
it comes from, since they will watch the
apple trees grow, Long said.
Since children attend the preschool
during the summer in a desert climate,
Glotfelty is pleased that the value of trees
has been recognized in this specic area,
and has hopes for other areas as well.
I like the idea of planting new trees
every year, wherever they are needed on
campus, Glotfelty said.
Due to the help of the volunteers from
the fraternity Phi Delta Sigma and the
partnership between the UNR Arboretum
and the City of Reno, the children of the
Early Head Start Program will now have
a natural environment where they will
be able to learn and grow alongside their
new trees.

MICHAEL PEREZ
The team`s returning scorer,
Perez will look to be the team`s
go-to scoring option. Perez was
one of only four players to start in
every game last year for Nevada.
The UTEP transfer averaged 11.5 points per
game, 3.8 rebounds a game while shooting
.383 percent from the feld. Not only is Perez
the teams leading scorer, he is also Nevada`s
top returning three-point shooter.

AJ WEST
If Perez is the team`s top offensive
producer, then West is the team`s
top defensive performer this
season. The 6-foot-8 junior from
Brooklyn, New York was one of the Mountain
West`s best shot blockers, averaging 2.3 blocks
per game. West was also the team`s leading
rebounder last season with 6.7 a game. West
will be looked at to protect the paint and be the
team`s main low post offensive option.

MARQUEZE COLEMAN
Coleman will start at point guard
for the Wolf Pack in his third
season. Last season Coleman
averaged six points per game
and a little over two rebounds a game.
Though Coleman has only started in four
games over the last two years he has a lot of
experience playing in 58 out of the possible
63 games.

LUCAS STRIVINS
Even though Strivins did not have
much playing time last season
and averaged only 0.8 points per
game, he should see increased
playing time as a junior. His size will
be a big help to the Wolf Pack this season as
he is almost 7 feet tall. He will provide a good
contribution as a rebounder being one of the
taller players in the Mountain West Conference
and even notched two starts toward the
beginning of the season.

Fenner will look to start at the
small forward position but will
also play shooting guard. Fenner
has good size at 6-foot-6. As a
freshman Fenner played in all 32 games
and averaged 2.5 points per game and 1.8
rebounds. Last season Fenner was awarded
the most improved player on Nevada`s team.
