KEY NOTES from the Principal

From the desk of the principal:

New State-wide Traffic Laws Effective January 1, 2010

Please see the attached announcement form the Park Ridge Police Department regarding
two new laws effective on January 1st. The first law indicates it will be illegal to text
message or do e-mail while driving. The second states that it is illegal to use a cell phone
while driving in a school zone or a construction zone. The Park Ridge Police and School
District 64 would like you to be aware of these changes in advance.

Cell Phones For Soldiers

The District 64 Green team is working to collect donated old cell phones that will be
recycled and the benefit of the donation will purchase calling cards for soldiers to talk with
their loved ones at home. There is more information attached to this newsletter. Please
help this worthy cause.

Kindergarten Census and New Student Enrollment

If you have younger children turning 5 in September know of any potential kindergarten
students in the community please compete the Census of Kindergarten and Transfer
Students form included in this newsletter. The more information we have earlier in the
year the better we are able to plan for 2010-2011.

Holiday Sing
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the students for an outstanding performance at
the Holiday Sing yesterday. I would also like to thank Mrs. Carlson and Mr. Kabat for all
of their hard work to make the sing a beautiful and memorable event.

Thank You Room Parents!

A special thank you to all of the room parents who volunteered and helped supervise
during lunch in the classrooms on Wednesday for the Holiday Sing and the H1N1
vaccinations a couple weeks ago. We really appreciate your support!

Like many of you, I find it hard to believe how fast the fall went by. It seems like
last week we had the Back to School Picnic and now we are a day away from
Winter Break. I wish you all a relaxing and fun Winter Break and a healthy New
Year filled with joy, opportunity and growth.

From the Desk of Margaret Petkofski,
Facilitator of School Health Services

Parents/Guardians of Fifth Grade Students:

Fall 2010 health packets were distributed to fifth grade students in their
classrooms during the week of December 14, 2009. According to state legislation,
upon entering Sixth Grade, students must present a current physical
examination. This Certificate of Child Health Examination must include
documentation of appropriate immunizations, height, weight, BMI, blood
pressure, and diabetes screening, as mandated by the State of Illinois. The
parent portion of the form must be completed and signed. In addition, state
law also mandates that sixth grade students have a dental examination
performed within 18 months prior to May 15, 2011.

In order to complete the review of all sixth grade health records before the first
day of school, the preferred deadline for submitting health requirements is July
31, 2010.

Please return the documents to your child’s middle school.

Students
not
in
compliance
with
these
requirements
will
be

excluded from the first day of school attendance, August 24, 2010.

Please call the school health assistant if you do

not receive a packet. Forms may also be found
on our district website (www.d64.org), under
District Information, Health Services.

IMPORTANT HEALTH OFFICE MESSAGE:

With the arrival of winter break, family schedules become even busier, with holiday
celebrations, travel, and more opportunities for children to play with one another.
Please take the time to check your child’s head for the presence of head lice and
nits (eggs) during break and prior to return to school in January. If nits or live lice
are found, all household members should be examined and treated if needed. If
your child has an active infestation (live lice), you should notify parents of your
child’s playmates, so that steps can be made to prevent further spread.

Head lice are spread most commonly by head-to-head (hair-to-hair) contact with
someone who already has head lice, and less frequently by sharing clothing or
belongings onto which lice may have crawled.

Please discuss the following prevention measures with family members:

•Avoid head-to-head contact during play (sports activities, sleep-overs).

•Do not share clothing such as hats, caps, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, or hair
accessories.

•Do not share combs, brushes, or towels.

•Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or stuffed animals that have been in
recent contact with a person with head lice.

For more information, please visit the district website at

http://d64.org/page.php?pid=350http:// or http://www.cdc.gov/lice/head/.

Cash donations will go towards purchasing prizes for the raffle.

! Update on Superintendent Search: Leadership Profile developed

As you know, earlier this month the Board of Education invited input from parents,
District 64 staff and the community via meetings and a written survey to help develop
a Leadership Profile of the characteristics being sought in a new superintendent. The
Board is working with Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, Ltd. to facilitate a national
search for candidates. The search firm compiled information from the meetings and
surveys, and presented a Leadership Profile to the Board at a special meeting on
Wednesday, December 16. The profile can be read on the superintendent search page
of the District 64 Web site: http://www.d64.org/page.php?pid=455

2010 New
Traffic Laws
(Effective January 1, 2010)

625 ILCS 5/12-610.2(b)

A person may not operate a motor vehicle
on a roadway while using an
electronic communication device to compose,
send or read an electronic message.

625 ILCS 5/12-601.1 (e)

A person, regardless of age, may not use a wireless telephone at any
time while operating a motor vehicle on a roadway in a school
speed zone established under Section 11-605, or on a highway in a
construction or maintenance speed zone established under Section
11-605.1.
This subsection (e) does not apply to (1) a person engaged in a
highway construction or maintenance project for which a construction
or maintenance speed zone has been established, (2) a person using a
wireless telephone for emergency purposes, including, but not limited
to, law enforcement agency, health care provider, fire department, or
other emergency services agency or entity, (3) a law enforcement
officer or operator of an emergency vehicle when performing the
officer’s or operator’s official duties or (4) to a person using the
wireless telephone in a voice-activated mode.

The District 64 Traffic Safety Committee encourages

all drivers to be aware of these important changes
effective throughout Illinois.

9
Sponsored by the
Park Ridge-Niles School District 64
Green Team Committee
in cooperation with the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce

Donate your old cell phone,

help the environment, and
help our troops call home!

How can you help the troops and our

environment?
! Get those old, unwanted cell phones out of
your junk drawer.
! Collect phones from family and friends.
! If your cell phone has a SIM card, please remove it.
! If you do not have a SIM card, clear the phone’s memory of contacts and other stored information.
Don’t know how? Go to http://www.recellular.com/recycling/data_eraser/
! Drop off your phones in the Cell Phones for Soldiers bin near your school’s office or main entrance by Friday,
January 29.
! Because Cell Phones for Soldiers is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, you may print a donation receipt available
on the Green Team Committee page of the District 64 Web site: http://www.d64.org/site/files/10_d64cellreceipt.pdf

How do the troops benefit?

! The recycling company, ReCellular, who is the exclusive partner of Cell Phones for Soldiers, purchases our
donated cell phones. (The Chamber of Commerce office is the main collection point for Park Ridge.)
! Money from ReCellular goes to the Cell Phones for Soldiers non-profit organization.
! Cell Phones for Soldiers purchases calling cards and sends them to troops in need – all branches of the U.S.
military are included.
! Each donated cell phone will provide a soldier an hour of talk time with their loved ones.

What happens to the donated cell phones?

! Functional phones may be reconditioned, reprogrammed, and sold to wholesalers from more than 40 countries.
! Phones that cannot be resold are dismantled and recycled.

Recycling Facts:
1. Recycling cell phones reduces greenhouse gas emissions, keeps valuable material out of landfills and
incinerators, and conserves natural resources.
2. According to the EPA, if Americans recycled 100 million phones, we could save enough upstream energy to
power more than 194,000 U.S. households for a year.
3. If consumers were able to reuse those 100 million cell phones, the environmental savings would be even greater,
saving enough energy to power more than 370,000 U.S. homes each year.
4. Recycling just ONE million cell phones reduces greenhouse gas emissions equal to taking 1,368 cars off the road
for a year.
5. The EPA has targeted cell phone recycling because fewer than 20 percent of cell phones are recycled each year
and most people do not know where to recycle them.

Thanks in advance for your support of this

District 64 Green Team Committee project.
