Joseph Murphy Period 4 9/16/14

We can put things in glass cases in an attempt to preserve them as much as we want;
longevity is merely a matter of time Whether that time is enough for some!ody is simply opinion "ome
of us can never have enough time #egardless$ no matter what we do$ the end is inevita!le for all things
%t is even inevita!le for feelings and emotions While some of us want to &eep material o!'ects as close
to us as possi!le$ others simply want feelings to stay (he few that remain from these two limited
categories of people$ some can !e placed in a category all to their own$ it !eing that we want to !e the
same$ as humans$ as long as possi!le We don)t want to &eep things$ we don)t want to remain in a feeling
as complicated as love; all we want is to stay the same person *ertain things should stay the way we
are
+olden *aulfield)s wants and desires are simple in the aforementioned regard +e wants
to stay a !oy +e wants to preserve childhood %n a !roader sense$ he wants to preserve good things
"alinger$ as if stating it directly wasn)t enough$ also uses sym!ols to ma&e his point clear to the reader
,ie the Museum of -atural +istory$ representing this viewpoint .ids grow up and !ecome adults$ who
are all the same %n conse/uence$ +olden wants to &eep &ids preserved in their own little glass cases0
(his perseverance of goodness is e1pressed earlier in the novel as well$ with +olden)s wanting of Jane to
remain the same (his recurrence of the theme of wishful adolescence is something very important$ as$ in
fact$ it is the !iggest theme in the !oo& ,!ased off of the fact that it is what the !oo& is named after0
What this is evidenced !y is the little !oy singing$ f a !ody catch a !ody through the rye$while
s&ipping through the street and +olden)s reaction to it Pure childish thin&ing !rings 'oy to him %t is
something that should stay the same
2efore % !egin$ % would li&e to state that % do !elieve we can preserve things 3ssentially$
everything in the world is a viewpoint$ especially things discussed in 3nglish class (he funny thing is$
when thought a!out$ we are having viewpoints on viewpoints (he /uestion of preserving something is
!ased entirely on one)s opinion %f one !elieves that the thing is preserved$ then it is preserved to that
person 4part from math$ very few things are strict and definite in this world
While some want to preserve o!'ects$ and others want to preserve feelings and emotions$
while even others want to preserve a state of !eing$ % want something else % want to preserve a concept
4n idea 4n idea so strong that a glass museum couldn)t contain it -othing could contain it % want to
preserve love "urely$ one could categori5e love as a feeling$ or even a state of !eing$ !ut in my opinion$
love is something that$ in fact$ is indescri!a!le !y words 6ove is uni/ue to an individual %t is uni/ue to
time 6ove can !e instant$ slow$ /uic&$ or all at once (he idea of love$ true love$ is romantici5ed and
often deprecated in the media %t is an idea (herefore$ it will have varying opinions a!out it +owever$
something we can not dou!t is the e1istence of love "cientists$ poets$ teenagers$ adults$ children$ etc7
everyone has had an e1perience with love Whether it !e they loved someone or they researched love or
they heard a!out someone loving someone or they wrote a!out love as % am doing now$ everyone has
had an e1perience with love (his$ this reason is why % want to preserve love %t is uni/ue$ yet universal
4nd real Parado1ically$ constantly changing 4nd % love it
